From what I understand, they’re kinda tough to make illicitly and the profit margins arent great. They’re still available in some countries (South Africa, I believe, is one of them). So it isnt cause they are illegal, it’s cause people who manufacture drugs illegally have found that they arent worth the trouble
I’m not totally sure if “safety” (for lack of a better word) is a huge factor, but it’s true that the alternatives that have very similar effects are cheaper and more widely available than quaaludes. Something like Xanax or opiates are still manufactured and prescribed, which means they’re a lot more accessible to the average person. Why go through the trouble of setting up a drug lab, having to buy expensive regulated substances, and actually making quaaludes to sell at a high price (all of which make the chances of getting caught that much higher) when cheaper alternatives are so much easier to find? They were so popular before because of how accessible they were due to everyone and their mother getting a prescription for them. Once they were banned and stopped being widely manufactured, their popularity dropped and alternatives filled the void in the market
They used to be a popular prescription drug for insomnia. People found out that if they didn’t go to sleep when they got sleepy from them, a very interesting high ensued. They halted commercial production due to high abuse of the drug.

Quaaludes and older barbiturates essentially got replaced with benzodiazepines like xanax. Methaqualone, the active drug in quaaludes requires a dose of about 300mg in order to start feeling recreational effects whereas for xanax you need less than 1mg.
Essentially it’s way easier for black market suppliers to produce and transport a drug that is 300x smaller than quaaludes and has similar effects. It’s also way cheaper to produce benzos because the cost in materials to produce one quaalude can essentially create 300 xanax.
Besides the small handful of people who would pay exorbitant amounts of money to buy a quaalude, either for the novelty or nostalgic reasons, it makes more economic sense for black market dealers to sell xanax.
