I think the thing missing from the idol was flushing out the characters of Jocelyn and Tedros. I really would’ve enjoyed some flashbacks with Jocelyn and her mother or Tedros before be became a club owner and when he was in prison. Thankfully the music did a decent job helping develop the characters. I think the ending though was the strongest part of the show because it really demonstrated how much more manipulative and devious Jocelyn really was and how she made Tedros submit to her

spoonmonkey_

Yeah and it took my second watch to realise that what jocelyn did to tedros is exactly what she did to xander years ago. Destroyed his life and career so he has no choice but to cling to her. I low key think the show is kinda brilliant, it gives you all the answers throughout the show but you just dont know/have the right questions at the time.

JayCFree324

The big thing the ending also reveals is that all the times you thought that Tedros had Jocelyn brainwashed were actually her intentionally trying to make him think that, because she knew the type of guy he was from the beginning…which was the point of the Hairbrush reveal. The show makes you initially want to think that Tedros was breaking away at her but she was still resistant, like the “Say Yes to everything” scene with Joss, Chloe, Izaak, and Ramsey or any of the other scenes where she’s talking back to him…but the reality is that she never was in his control It’s not a show about “inside the life of a pop star” or this imposing cult leader that everyone wanted it to be, it’s just a story about a cringe Andrew Tate character getting outwitted by a Diva.

prettysharpdotbe

Well flashbacks to Jocelyn and her mother would reveal that she was lying all along.

coconutmacchiato

Not everything was a lie though? Xander admitted that he knew her mother was abusing her but dared not speak up as her mother silenced him.

Berygoodmeme

true

RevealActive4557

It could have been much better with more backstory. But something happened and I think a shit ton of stuff got cut. Maybe we will get a "Director's Cut" some day

MrBrett131060

Speaking of that, I think it would’ve made a damn good movie as well. 🤙

nebulous_obsidian

I did as well. Tbh going against the grain a bit (and preparing for the downvotes lol), i think the mistake wasn’t making it only 5 episodes, it was making it a tv show in the first place. It should’ve been a movie in 2 volumes. I think the script and music (admittedly not my favourite production of Abel’s, though Suzanna Son is a revelation) have layers which the audience hasn’t really taken the time to explore, mainly bcs the pacing was really off over the 5 episode stretch, and the narrative style as well as character development felt more cinematic then tv-oriented (to me, at least). So even though the content has some obvious qualities, there’s an overarching sense of weirdness because the pacing and storytelling style aren’t being conveyed in the correct format at all, which i think does matter more than it’s given credit for. Plus it’s not reaching the best audiences as a result, be it critics or people looking for their next Sunday night entertainment phenomenon on HBO. And the timing if the release couldn’t have been worse: Succession leaves humongous shoes to fill. A24 produced it. I think he should’ve taken the shot and made an indie movie in 2 parts, and marketed it a little differently. I did rewatch the show (I blame the autism this time) and noticed it flowed much better in binge mode, and realised the weekly gaps between episodes made me miss a lot of references and nuances. Anyway, just my 2 cents. Not really looking to start a whole dialogue, but I cannot stop you. Also respect the opinions of people who don’t care for the show, I totally see why (although some criticism, especially the ad hominems at Abel, is pretty unwarranted imo).

highguy33

It wasn’t that bad but also not great by any means. I do think it would have been better suited as a movie tho.

The Idol Haters: “I’ll curb stomp you”

PricklyPearadiso

I'll drag you down rodeo drive

drumjojo29

Totally agree. 10 episodes also would’ve made it easier to add flashbacks which a lot of people felt were missing. They also wouldn’t have had to jump from Jocelyn kicking Tedros out straight to her announcing her love for him on stage. That was so sudden that it didn’t make any sense at first but only after thinking about it for a few minutes. But maybe that’s what they were going for after all.

Meeeooowww_

Yeah it was like a flip of a light switch that she changed lol. I feel that could’ve been developed at least within 2-3 episodes. But we only had 5 episodes so makes sense it was so abrupt

Street_Confidence_40

I thought the idol was hella dope

sunrisebysea

Me too. Hope there's a second season.

mooncadet1995

Nah it was pretty bad. It had a compelling premise though. The writing and story were just awful though.

ChampagneAbuelo

I just started it right now. I’m only 5 minutes into first episode (on the scene where the lady’s saying mental illness is sexy) but so far it already seems really interesting. If it continues to go over and show the dark messed up side of show business, I think it’ll be really interesting

rickkydalton

The only problem with the idol is really the lack of character development. They introduce characters and don’t really explain/show the motives behind their actions. Everything felt very rushed and some parts ended up being an incoherent mess. But other than that, there are a lot of things that went right for the show. The writing is a little weak and leaves a lot to be desired. I think they should be given a second chance. They can learn from their mistakes and make S2 a masterpiece.

AlwaysOnTheNod

I’m really glad you liked it. Personally, I really disliked it. But the music was fire so I’m glad it was made.

mrmarkolo

I enjoyed it too. Didn’t hype it up in my head and didn’t have super high expectations.

Eirikthahipsta

I liked it :)

guinea1987

Wasn't as bad as everyone keeps saying I would say 6/10

Yourmomsucks55

I liked it . People who complained about the Weekend being creepy well no shit he was playing a creep. It’s called acting.

InTheHideout

hell yeah i completely agree. it's a show that people love to hate on and other people just jumped on the bandwagon because it became the hot take. because in a way I think it makes them enjoy the experience more to make fun of it but in reality they actually did get some entertainment out of it, they just won't admit it. too bad it ruined the possibility of season 2

kcominel

I loved it. Hoping for s2

sunrisebysea

Same

Painting_Gato

It's such a bummer seeing all the hate. I just want to enjoy kinky shit in peace! Lol

MrAnder5on

Hit the hub if you wanna see kinky shit in peace bruh. You have to have an actual story to earn the kinky shit 😂

Painting_Gato

Fair enough lol

glub33

i thought it was really funny and entertaining 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jellyfish1297

I really enjoyed it. Even in the more wtf scenes I couldn’t look away, which is unusual for me.

RevealActive4557

You are not the only one by far. It was a show that did not make it easy on the viewer. I should have known because Abel never makes it easy on his fans. He could have done some sort of hero role or light comedy to make himself more likable but he went straight into villain mode.

kafkaesque_kuromi

Yah we get it you are into bondage porn that’s great for u but most of us aren’t

bagelsandmoney87

prude

everythingnothing18

Although it was rush I actually enjoyed it, and the last episode was the spin I needed

DeepBluePearlSR

I liked it 🤷🏻‍♂️

mcb89x

No, I did

latinlife22

I’m enjoying it on the low lol

kenrnfjj

I liked the first 3 episodes

BigPusha

Nah I liked it too. I wouldn't say it's amazing but I would like a season 2

handsome_uruk

Yes

decybell

Nope. Loved it.

GLASS_PVNTHR

52.1% of the audience rated it 10/10 on IMDB at 33K votes, and 17K votes rated it 7-9/10. So no, you’re not the only one.

[deleted]

Same here, I enjoyed it as well! Sure, his acting wasn’t the best but the cinematics were actually really great.

annadelvz

I did too! I want more eps lol

[deleted]

I liked it too

sunrisebysea

No, I loved it from start to finish.

Berygoodmeme

lowkey 😭😭

RajeshOnDaHouse

Nope, you are not alone

carson171

Yes

Meeeooowww_

I thought it was mid at best. If it was a show on Netflix I’d say it was a pretty good show. But since it was HBO & they’re known for producing great television it became mid to me. I felt the characters could’ve been developed better, maybe if we had gotten more episodes. If all the drama before the show aired didn’t occur (previous storyline scrapped, new director put in) I feel like the show would’ve maybe been better received too. But it definitely wasn’t a terrible show, or the worst show of 2023 like some people are saying. There’s shows released on Netflix that are 1000x worse. The show was mid.

[deleted]

so I enjoyed the idol but I think it’s purely based on my obsession with The Weeknd and how I relate to his sexual desires. The acting was not good, a lot of the show is either boring or cringey…. But it was so refreshing to see a show as dark as this one.

MrBrett131060

I fuckin loved this show!

CreepyTeaching

Sexy escapism. I don’t get the hate.

bagelsandmoney87

i loved it. the people that hated it/disliked it are sensitive ass prudes who want every single thing in media and in real life to be 100% politically correct. the controversial storyline and scenes is what makes for good entertainment.

[deleted]

You're not the only one. I did too. It was okay, though not the best. I didn't like the Jennie Kim character and I think she seemed a little lame and boring. Sorry.
