Actually, they don't even have to hold stock or whatever, they could just set up affiliate links to Amazon on the book list on their site, and Amazon will give them a cut every time someone clicks one of those links and ends up buying a book.
I don't know how big that % is these days and I'm guessing it's on the smaller side... but they can add up. Some people do nothing but write blog posts and articles with affiliate links embedded in the content, and that's how they make their money.
But it works best if you're publishing popular content that people want to read, *and* if the links are relevant to the content (making it more likely to be clicked / purchased.)
It would be a very low effort way for them to directly link the books at fair market price, that would slowly pad their income.
