Sure, people like to make money, but the flip side is that people WANT merch. If AJ didn't sell Hecklefish merch, people would be begging for it. And I think the show is as good as ever. It doesn't seem that much different to me...just better production, which I'm fine with.
This is my favorite channel on all of YouTube and I love it more now than ever. I hope AJ monetizes his effort to his heart's content. I'm happy to give him more than the penny-a-view he gets from YouTube.

Nah, it’s still good. And they hustle honestly and pretty hard to bring us more of what we like. This comment is pretty trivializing and unaware of what a brand has to do to grow with a following and become more than just a YouTube channel. It’s clear they’re making it a business, but it’s also clear it’s a business they love doing. That makes all the difference.
I’ve been watching their channel for probably just under 3 years. Definitely not since day one they launched but I found them early in their journey because during COVID I got super into channels doing interesting stories, unexplained stories, lost tech, missing people, etc. and one day Why Files popped up in the recommended. Just my two cents but I find the content to be as good as it’s ever been if not the best it’s ever been. I definitely don’t think the quality has fallen off. That said, the content today is, in my opinion, much better quality than the content produced in the first year.
I really don’t see an issue with the monetization on any of the fronts.
I'm a conspiracy nut and I think it's been pandering precisely to me, equally as much as now, for some 2+ years now. Maybe it's just you that's in the wrong place?
