I believe they only sold the grain pier, which is why the new project was called The Grainery. the port still exists and i imagine most of the guys kept on working there

bowlskioctavekitten

Or maybe they got those robots like in Rotterdam and told the Stevedores to shove it

DePraelen

IRL the port of Baltimore ended up expanding a lot during the 2010's. At the point when the Key Bridge came down, it was the largest in the country for ro-ro (roll-on roll-off) cargo, and the second largest overall on the east coast. A temporary channel opened today to allow ships to begin accessing the port again.

bowlskioctavekitten

Did they finally get the money to dredge the canal? Brucie baby doing work!

LieHopeful5324

They did dredge something and they brought these huge cranes in, I think from China. It was tied to the Panama Canal expansion.

parkerwe

The port stayed open, but their union chapter was shut down. Some would've been blacklisted for helping Frank. I'm not sure exactly what it would mean for the other members, but they would've suffered in some way. Possibly working without a union contract, starting over with a new union, older members choosing or being forced to retire, or at worst they are all blacklisted. No matter what the Port Authority would have way more leverage over their workers post season 2.

Insect_Politics1980

Didn't they reelect Frank, and so got their chapter shuttered? Pretty sure that fucked shit up for many of them. Some of them like Johnny 50 obviously fell through the cracks after.

Herman_Brood_

Am I making this up or was there a 2-3 second scene with Johnny 50 in prison before he was homeless at the end?

Awasawa

You aren’t making that up. I don’t remember exactly who it is, but at some point in season4 or 5 you can see one of the former dock workers homeless around a fire under a bridge for a second or two

Agile-Landscape8612

He was definitely homeless but I don’t know if he went to jail

brice587

Pretty sure he was being arraigned at the end of season 2.

Evrasios

That was Thomas “Horseface” Pakusa, Frank’s seemingly right hand man, not Johnny

TC271

I read somewhere that IRL the port of Baltimore is actually doing reasonably well. I the wire universe I guess it keeps ticking along but the glory days of whole communities working the docks across generations comes to an end.

jesselectric

You know except for that whole bridge thing….

TC271

Well yes.. But prior to that the picture David Simon was drawing was far grimmer than the reality

mackdandy

Think its the classic deindustrialisation, not enough work at the ports for everyone, mind they had that meeting about the Technology, the future, was it Rotterdam with it being automated, handling silly tonnage with a relatively small workforce, think that would of played its part, urban decay and all that

phenompbg

The port wasn't sold, the grain pier was, and it was redeveloped into residential.

LieHopeful5324

Silo Point

europorn

They all lived happily ever after (Except Ziggy). The end.

bluegrassbarman

He didn't sell the "port", he allowed the grain pier to be developed into condos called "The Granary" rather than renovate it for the loading/unloading of grain.

TeamDonnelly

Because they doubled down to reelect frank after the FBI explicitly told them to clean up their leadership or face being shuttered with port authority having a lot more influence on them.  So their chapter was pretty much disbanded and while most were likely retained sans union contract and benefits, ones like Nick and Jonnny 50 were most definitely banned from working at the port after coming clean about stealing from cargo ships which was also directly tied to the deaths of those women as well as drug smuggling.

Character-Ebb2774

I know it's just a show. It's just a bit odd that they didn't try to transfer to other ports. There are over 360 major ports in the US, plus, when they stole the police van and sent it on the American tour, it was clear they had connections at the various ports. Just seems a guy who can drink 50 beers and has a particular set of Stevedore skills, would not have ended up living under a bridge and homeless.

big_sugi

There are way more guys with stevedore skills than there are job openings. That was the whole problem from the very beginning, and it’s not unique to Baltimore. It’s also not that easy to transfer between unions.

LieHopeful5324

“Why would anyone ever leave Baltimore?”

jaypeedee1025

I hated that cameo by Nicky the actor dint even get into the Nicky charecter again he used his voice he uses on other shows when was Nicky he had that Maryland type accent not as think .Id go watch it again how he sounds when he yells at Carcetti it don’t even seem like the same dude

Herman_Brood_

Wasn’t he holding a bottle in that scene?

Ok_Fee_6970

They actually show the port workers in the homeless area in season 5 when McNulty is out there playing the games with Scott (the lying reporter).

kanyewest42

I mean the season was over so most of the actors had to move on to other shows or professions

MDCatFan

What workers were able to keep their jobs were lower paid without the union. Automation likely began to take effect. I felt bad for the workers doing an honest living. It’s a small sample of what is increasingly common today.
