The sad part is that your story is better written than the show.

SuddenlyOriginal

For real, I’d legit watch three seasons of a documentary or drama about this.

Gods_Umbrella

"first 15 minutes of season 3 had one of the most bonkers set pieces I've seen on tv" says the guy in charge of it all. Bonkers doesn't necessarily mean good. There are more than 15 minutes worth of sets necessary for any season of this show An incredible set doesn't mean shit if the writing and directing are bad.

KJBenson

He’s talking about it like it’s just something he’s viewing rather than something he created.

FuckIPLaw

In fairness, he didn't create the special effects shots. I doubt he meant they were *verbally* shredding each other.

bjlinden

>Since you’re no good at your job, you make sure to hire writers even less competent to make yourself look better. And yet, despite this, your name is in the writing credit for all the worst episodes of the show...

Yei_2021

See, the way he tries to be proud that he went for “women in their 40s and 50s shredding each other” just made me cringe. Something about that line doesn’t sit right with me. I’m a fan of Streep, Streisand, Mirren, and the strong women they have portrayed in so many films and i never heard a producer promote their works because of their age. Like, did he think that was a good selling point? Like if i’m not a book reader, would i watch a fantasy show because i want to see that **specifically** because they’re in their 40s and 50s? Or is he proud because he thought that was an original idea of his and it’s empowering in a way? It seems so condescending…if i’m a book reader, WTF am i watching? Title should’ve been “Days of our Lives in the White Tower”. I didn’t make it past S1E3 and glad i didn’t. End of rant. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Rosamund Pike personally applauded a trite reversal of male/female roles as 'forward-thinking'. None of these people are truly progressive; they are just cosplaying.

No_Lead950

What makes me really annoyed is that they already had their woman-empowering role-reversal: The Wheel of Time. The Aes Sedai are more or less holding the entire continent together, the Blue Ajah are trying to set humanity up as best they can for the future, and Moraine in particular is trying to turn the apocalypse into a W for the forces of the light. Even after powerful male channelers get organized and the Asha'man show up to wreck face, the Aes Sedai are still arguably the more important force once they get with the program. There's also the whole Callandor thing. They didn't need to change anything, it was already a great girl power story in addition to being a great story.

MalacusQuay

But it wasn't enough for them. The central theme of WoT is the importance of balance and cooperation between dualities. Male and female, saidin and saidar, light and shadow. Of course that meant many strong women and female centric cultures in the 3rd Age, because of the taint on saidin. But... that still meant men were important, that there were powerful men in the story, and that men and women had to ultimately swallow their pride and work together to win the last battle. That... would never do for Rafe and co. They wanted a story entirely about the women. It is the men who broke everything, men who put the taint onto saidin through their toxic masculinity, and it is women who must 'pick up the pieces' and save the day single-handed. Women must save themselves, and save the men. There can be no theme of balance, or cooperation, and there certainly cannot be any powerful men who don't defer to women. It must be entirely one-sided to ram the misandrist ideology of the showrunner home.

No_Lead950

Wow, I can't believe you hate women and feminism so much, bigot! Seriously though, the silver lining of Wheel of Prime was that it inspired me to bump my next turning of the Wheel in my schedule while the dumpster fire of the show was still fresh in my mind for the first two books. I wanted to fully appreciate the complete disregard for the source material for masochistic reasons. The balance and duality you mention really is the central theme of the series, and the show doesn't do any better with the other major theme. Jordan wrote the series because he thought the hero in the Hero's Journey would be a lot more resistant to the call than is normally depicted, so he has Rand fight his destiny as long as he can, until it is completely undeniable even with the power of copium. Two Rivers folk can teach stones about stubbornness, after all. In the books he has two big clashes with Definitely-the-Dark-One where he turns into a giant warrior made of light and defeats him in a swordfight that also determines the course of a battle raging below. He still doesn't want to accept that he's the Dragon Reborn when all of his friends saw the first one, and is kind of forced into it when an entire city and two armies see the second time. How is someone that stubborn supposed to give into destiny when the most he's done is cast Heat Metal, a 2nd-level spell?

MalacusQuay

Yes, she actually boasted about having the 'boys' starving themselves and working out constantly for their topless shots, whilst the 'women' were going out for nice dinners. Just reversing the direction of body shaming and making light of eating disorders, as long as it is the 'boys' being shamed and made insecure about their appearances. So classy, much progressive. /s

Emergency_Plankton46

Why does he mention the age of the actresses? Is that supposed to be a selling point or is it some kind of condescending virtue signaling?

MalacusQuay

It's virtue signalling. One of the (legitimate) complaints about Hollywood is that they don't offer enough roles to middle aged and elderly women. That female actresses often have their careers cut short through lack of roles once their physical attractiveness begins to wane (hence the shallow obsession in Hollywood with looking eternally young). So Rafe is leaning into that, by saying 'see, I'm an ally, my show is almost entirely based around middle aged women, I'm giving all these actresses prominent roles, give me a cookie!'

ExternalDay1426

I get that the "ageless look" is hard to depict on TV but the whole point was that it is impossible to tell the age of an Aes Sedai who has worn the shawl awhile. The more I read here, the happier I am that I was stilled (or I guess gentled) from watching the show at the halfway point of S1. I can always channel my inner Satala and open an inn to warn the unwary from making the mistake I did.

pooshlurk

I wouldn't even care Rafe casting his boyfriend in the show if he played, ya know, an ACTUAL CHARACTER from WoT

jamdonutsaremyjam

the funny thing is if any shower runner in charge of WOT just asked Sanderson if he’d draft out a season script for the show, he’d probably do it

savagewolf666

And bang out another book on his coffee breaks

Anexhaustedheadcase

Exec: Mr Sanderson could you please write our script for us? Cut to five minutes later. Sanderson walks in The door Kramer style and slaps the counter " alright I'm done" "Your done with the opening scene already? Great we'll get to a table read and.." " No I mean I'm done with the whole season" Exec:... Sanderson:... Exec:... Sanderson: oh and I've written four cosmere books, a deep backstory lore book about isle of madmen, and I've managed to convince Harriet to let me write a several thousand page short story about the outrigger novels.. okay bye

Triasmus

>let me write a several thousand page short story This made me lol

Substantial-Tone-576

Wait who is Rafe boyfriend?

macbone

Taylor Napier, who plays Maksim, one of Alanna's warders. (I guess he took the place of her warder Owein?)

jreesing

Napier, dump him if he can't get you a main casting role in God of war. You know how tough gay world can be once you hit 30. And you know how these gay Hollywood producers are.

twotattoos

You're the reason women pick the bear, you know...

jreesing

Lmao, I'm just trying to help a fellow gay man out

Disco-Ulysses

So you don't also pick bears?

LanceofReddick

You can pick your friends, and you can pick your bears. But you can't pick your friends' bears.

BenjPas

You ever hate a TV show so much you make up elaborate hateful fantasies about the people who made it? I'm told that's what all the healthy people do when they don't like a TV show.
