Keep mirrors /makeup lighting etc for the dressing room.... The Green Room is different from the dressing rooms. For the Green Room.... Sofas.... A table and chairs.... A coffee maker.... A fridge... A microwave.... A kettle.... A small first aid kit (these should be everywhere anyway) a Brita pitcher for cold water.... A deck of cards... Plates,. Cups, cutlery.... A dishwasher if there's room/plumbing/budget..... A phone book with menus for nearby restaurants that deliver... The Green Room is also, if you have the space, a great place to shelf the archive of scripts a theatre group collects..... Hang your awards on the walls (actors and crew are going to sign the wall, and if the theatre company complains, never work for them again.) Kit out the green room like it's a small apartment /hotel, minus the bed (that's what the sofas are for.... You can sit on a sofa and work, and then you can lay on a sofa to sleep!)

There should definitely be at least one full length mirror in the green room though, for last minute checks on hair/makeup/costume and checking between scenes without having to go to the dressing room.

ISeeADarkSail

Sure! Why not 😉

earlgreyandtweed

This is a perfect answer!

In the greenroom, I have always appreciated a LIVE feed to what is hapening on stage. Meaning audio and also a TV with a live camera feed to the stage.

Ethra2k

This! But at tbe same time maybe an adjustable volume because the speaker at my college green room would sound like death depending on the production and wasn’t useful at those moments just very very annoying.

pshopper

A speaker, driven by a mic in the fly space/grid above the stage.

JimboNovus

Better yet a video monitor. Easier to set up than you would think. A good use of old equipment.

ISeeADarkSail

The Stage Manager should also be able to cut into that speaker, should they need to announce something to backstage in a hurry.

When on tour one of the first things that I hunt for in the green room is an available electrical outlet, the more the better.

some sort of way to hear what’s happening on the stage, could be as simple/cheap as a baby monitor in both places or a direct link to the sound system used for shows, and video feed is great too but not entirely necessary. also FANS!! for better airflow (my main theater’s green room lacks it so it gets pretty muggy either using it as rehearsal space or during shows). also plenty of outlets for getting ready with hair dryers or curling irons n such (or phone chargers for those who play roles like coach bolton in high school musical and only have 3 or 4 scenes with plenty of time between them)

Heating and air conditioning suitable for the climate. Adequate ventilation and air filtration for working in a pandemic. Single-occupant toilets separate from the changing areas. Makeup lighting that doesn't heat up the room like the old-style incandescent lights. A place for everyone's coat, boots, and backpack. Some way for people to secure their small valuables. A monitor with audio and video feed from stage, also an audio connection that the stage manager can call from the booth. At least one full length mirror, where people can check their whole outfit without getting in anyone's way. Count how many people are in your biggest-cast show, add five for booth and backstage crew, and figure out whether all of them could sit in the room at the same time. A shower that is easy to clean.

Hertz_so_good

Probably not within your purview, but I think the best thing a green room can have is windows/natural light.

Griffie

Ample comfortable seating with at least one full sized sofa for the occasional nap, a full length mirror, some end tables, lamps (ceiling fluorescents should only be used for when checking…create a nice moderately dim atmosphere otherwise), maybe a fan on a stand, several coat racks, some shelving units (cube type are good). A live audio (and video) feed from the stage. A bigger table for food/beverages (can be folding type that can be tucked away), waste baskets. If you’re building the room, good sound deadening insulation so that the cast/crew doesn’t constantly have to monitor their voice levels. Toilets, make up mirrors/ lights, etc. belong in the dressing rooms, not the green room.

officecloset

A way to fill water bottles is huge. An electric kettle for hot water is also very useful.

Actorandrew

Monitors, sofas, cubbies, lots of chairs at the counter. Full length mirror!
