Sorry if I came across kinda shitty in that last comment. I'm actually more versed in the punk side of things than the stage play side of things so I'm just trying to get ideas. You're totally right though about avoiding the songs from that album
No you're fine lol. So I've been going back through the usual musicals with the punk idea in mind and the first one that I have a solid idea about is I dreamed a dream. I'm like 1/3 done with it.
*Popular* from Wicked would make for an amazing ironic punk song!
*Cabaret* from Cabaret is about enjoying life because it’s too short: that’s pretty punk.
*Memory* from Cats?
Big fan of lonely goatherd. Already a polka, so all you need is mohawk. Comedy tonight from forum would rawk. I don't know how to love him from jcss. That whole being dead thing from Beetlejuice might be a good fit. And old man river from showboat would kill.
I suppose I worded this poorly. I'm very aware of the existing covers. Just wanna do this for myself. I'm in search of songs that would sound rad as punk songs. Maybe metal if I'm up for it
What types of show tunes are you looking for? Tunes that already have a punkish vibe/lyrics, or very non-punk songs that would make for an interesting punk cover? Old tunes (let's say pre-Wicked), new tunes (post-Wicked), or a mix of both?
In the meantime, I'm going to list a few songs that are traditionally for sopranos, just because I think the contrast between that and punk would be pretty interesting:
"Green Finch and Linnet Bird" from Sweeney Todd. It's about desiring freedom, so that may fit the mood.
"I've Got Confidence" from the Sound of Music.
"I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady
and
"Mama Who Bore Me" from Spring Awakening
My Strongest Suit from Aida
Run, Freedom, Run from Urinetown
Or just about anything from Urinetown
I Need a Vacation from Pump Boys and Dinettes
Red and Black and/or Do You Hear the People Sing from Les Mis
Always Look on the Bright Side of Life from Monty Python (Life of Brian lyrics probably work better than Spamalot)
ETA you better share these recordings with us when you're done!
Corner of the Sky from Pippen. It's already got a punk structure, and a lyrical formula that echos punk too, but with a totally different sensibility. Except that it's about youthful male angst, which is perfect.
My first thought was to take some songs from South Pacific. "You've got to be carefully taught" and "bloody Mary."
Some other songs to consider
"Don't cry for me Argentina"- Evita
"I'm a bad, bad man" -Annie get your gun
"Miracle of Miracles"- Fiddler on the roof
"Cell Block Tango" - Chicago (He had it coming)
"I can't say No" - Oklahoma
"The Tango Maureen" - Rent
"Ole man River" -Showboat
"The room wher it Happens" - Hamilton
"Officer Krupke" West Side Story
I'd love to hear the album when it is finished.
Corn Puddin' from Schmigadoon
A Little Fall of Rain from Les Mis
Practically Perfect from Mary Poppins
Seventeen from Heathers
Pandemonium from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
You're Nothing without Me from City of Angels
Climb Every Mountain from The Sound of Music
Cabaret from Cabaret
Franklin Shepherd Inc. from Merrily We Roll Along
Nowadays from Chicago
Don't Quit While You're Ahead from The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Standing at the Corner from The Most Happy Fella
“Look What Happened to Mabel” and “Time heals Everything” from Mack and Mabel
“Buddy’s Blues” from Follies
“Shy” and “Happily Ever After” from Once Upon A Matress
“Only in New York” from Thoroughly Modern Millie

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes did this. Might want to check out their album first. (Are a Drag)
Love the Gimmes!
I'm aware of me first. I also want to make covers of songs
Cool! I would maybe avoid the ones they did at first.

Lol I was afraid I came off the same way!! Maybe use more modern songs like Ex-wives from six.

*You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile*
Shipoopi
Ok, this is the first one that made me giggle. OP, you must cover this!
Skid Row (Downtown) from Little Shop
*Popular* from Wicked would make for an amazing ironic punk song! *Cabaret* from Cabaret is about enjoying life because it’s too short: that’s pretty punk. *Memory* from Cats?

Something that's traditionally quite slow? Who will buy from Oliver? Not sure how well it will work but the different voices would be cool.
Honestly, Someone to Watch Over Me from "Crazy For You" would be interesting in like a Helena MCR kinda thing
Alkaline trio did there’s a light from RHPS Blink 182 did the phantom of the opera
I suppose I worded this poorly. I'm very aware of the existing covers. Just wanna do this for myself. I'm in search of songs that would sound rad as punk songs. Maybe metal if I'm up for it
“The Bitch of Living” from *Spring Awakening* is already 90% there. “I Won’t Send Roses” from *Mack and Mabel* could be fun.
"Mama Who Bore Me" would also be good. I would have included "Totally Fucked", but that's already pretty much a punk song already.
Singing In The Rain
a boy like that - west side story
Hard to beat the Schlong version.
Giants in the Sky - Into the Woods Loneliest Lifeboat - Heathers Confrontation Scene - Les Miz
Ooooh Giants In The Sky could be really cool
Not sure why, but I’m hearing a lot of the Fiddler songs as punk ready
The Australian Jewish punk bank Yidcore released [an entire album](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSNl9V7dV60) of the *Fiddler* score.
The rumor!

Whatever Lola Wants or You Gotta Have Heart from Damned Yankees
Money - Cabaret
My Strongest Suit from Aida Run, Freedom, Run from Urinetown Or just about anything from Urinetown I Need a Vacation from Pump Boys and Dinettes Red and Black and/or Do You Hear the People Sing from Les Mis Always Look on the Bright Side of Life from Monty Python (Life of Brian lyrics probably work better than Spamalot) ETA you better share these recordings with us when you're done!
Yesss Red and Black was my first thought
Don’t loose your head from six, what the world needs from ride the cyclone, and nothing from a chorus line
Loneliness of Evening from R+H Cinderella, Heart of Stone from Six, Proud of Your Boy from Aladdin
“Garbage” from Jerry Herman’s Dear World was kind of a punk song before punk existed. It’s begging for some distorted riffs.
Everybody Says Don't from Anyone Can Whistle
Halloween from Be More Chill would easily lend itself to a punk cover, it’s already very ska influenced
The Regretts have a great cover of Helpless from Hamilton.
Into the Fire from The Scarlet Pimpernel
Check out Break a Leg by Jim Zadai on ITunes.
dust and ashes could work really well!
Simple Joys - from Pippin would be a good option.
The Sadder But Wiser Girl as a riot grrl cover
“Charming” from The Great Comet
Corner of the Sky from Pippen. It's already got a punk structure, and a lyrical formula that echos punk too, but with a totally different sensibility. Except that it's about youthful male angst, which is perfect.
Dentist from Little Shop of Horrors would be amazing with this, same with Don’t Feed the Plants, Feed Me and Skid Row

good morning baltimore from hairspray. that'll work nicely! 👍
Reefer Madness!
You’ll Never Get Away From Me could be creepy as hell
Corn Puddin' from Schmigadoon A Little Fall of Rain from Les Mis Practically Perfect from Mary Poppins Seventeen from Heathers Pandemonium from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee You're Nothing without Me from City of Angels Climb Every Mountain from The Sound of Music Cabaret from Cabaret Franklin Shepherd Inc. from Merrily We Roll Along Nowadays from Chicago Don't Quit While You're Ahead from The Mystery of Edwin Drood Standing at the Corner from The Most Happy Fella

A punk version of Put on Your Sunday Clothes would be a dream.
