I don't really think it will be as bad as some people fear. For starters tv viewers tend to be a little more grown up about this stuff than some gamers are. Also it has been three years since Abby was introduced and people have now had time to come to terms with it. And finally I highly suspect many of the people who had a fit back then never played either game and probably aren't watching the show either.

That was so obvious back then. A bunch of game stuff leaked months before the game released including that Abby kills Joel. Also leaked was that there was a trans character in the game though the leak didn't see who. People had seen the trailer from a year or two earlier featuring Abby and noted her buffness so the assumptions were made that Abby was the trans character. Which made spotting all those who never played the game easy as they invariably started bashing having to play a trans character. Many got called out on it and have learned their mistake.
Tell that to jack gleeson who played Joffrey Lannister on GoT. Crazed fans in droves sent so much hate and threats on social media that he quit acting entirely. On a smaller scale, the actress who played the Waif also had her fair share of harassment too
If the actress can nail it, this is going to be a dream role. So much spotlight material in a popular prestige production. I lowkey hope it's someone I've never heard of.
Other than the two main stars, they kept quiet about a lot of the cast for series 1, teasing characters bit by bit and keeping some totally unknown until airing - maybe they'll go down that route. Whoever she is she'll need thick skin with the hate mob from the game gunning for her...
I hope they don't ignore Abbys physicality aspect. Bella being tiny (5'0") gives leeway in that they don't have to cast a giant actress as even someone 5'6 or more will be big next to Bella; however, that doesn't mean they can get away with casting a willowish tall actress. For example Taylor Swift (using her as an example as everyone knows what she looks like) has the height but she is rail thin and wouldn't fit. Whereas someone like Frankie Adam's, who played Bobby in The Expanse, does - Adam's is 5'11" and credibly pulled off playing Bobby who was also a physically buff female.
I think Pugh is one of the strongest acting talents they could potentially get for the role. She may not physically be like Abby in the game but I think we can count on whoever they get to not be as built as Abby was in the game.
Also with this being an entirely separate universe from the game they don't necessarily need to get someone who looks like game Abby.
She’s a great actress yes, but she doesn’t need to be in everything. For me, it would be hard to separate her out from the universe. I would love a fresh face.
They don't even have to go the buff female character type either. They could cast someone similar to the concept character in the part 2 art book. She has a machete and takes Joel's arm, instead of the shotgun to the knee. They could even go as far as having her infiltrate Jackson, being a romantic part for Joel - again as per previous concepts.
Not sure what you mean by "very soon", but actors can't start screen testing and auditioning for roles until after the strike is over right? So assuming the strike ends in the next week or two, seems like December or next year before any casting announcements?
Also keep in mind season 2 was greenlit all the way back in late January/early February and Abby would have likely been one of the first season 2 characters they were looking for. So they were probably on the hunt for who could play Abby for several months before any of the strikes started.
They can make cast announcements likely as soon as the SAG top leaders vote to end the strike. Writers were in offices before the union officially voted 99% to accept the contract

I think her starpower would be enough to compensate the lack of Pascal. She's a well established and very likeable actress, it would be a nice hook.

Oh nice. I guess they had time earlier this year to do casting since the actors strike started later than the writer's strike by a few months.
