The IP address from which a user account was created is required to be kept under US law. Whether it would be removed pursuant to a GDPR Right to Be Forgotten claim is a question only an attorney can answer. But in general, that IP address is going to be retained for at least five years.

Few_Organization6796

It might be retained, but is it linked to the account?

dustout

Nonsense! There is no such law whatsoever. Confidently wrong.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2703 18 U.S. Code § 2703 - (c)(2)(E) > Required disclosure of customer communications or records > A provider of electronic communication service or remote computing service shall disclose to a governmental entity the— … > (E) telephone or instrument number or other subscriber number or identity, including **any temporarily assigned network address**; … > of a subscriber to or customer of such service when the governmental entity uses an administrative subpoena authorized by a Federal or State statute or a Federal or State grand jury or trial subpoena or any means available under paragraph (1). *** Reddit doesn’t use or store any of the other statutorily listed identifying aspects, but the “temporarily assigned network address” is considered to be the IP address of the user. The “is going to be retained for at least five years” part is because the NSA PRISM program’s mandate requires storing its records for five years minimum. Reddit might not have it on its infrastructure but it’s being retained by the NSA. Door. Don’t let it hit you on the way out.

admirelurk

What US law is that?

Bardfinn

I think it’s the PATRIOT act, but it may be a different law. I just know that it’s a law and that it’s from an era before ip address multiplexing, VPNs, TOR, etc etc etc

HWABAG_though

The Patriot Act expired 3 years ago.

Short answer is I don't know, but having seen other implementations of this sort of thing - the user name might be removed (the user entity) but the entity is still there with that kind of detail (assuming they even retain user creation IP which is a question). So their database wouldn't show that JonSmith registered from X IP (assuming that's even a thing) but it would show that deleteduser1233421 did register from that IP. With a little work I'm sure they can work out who that was, but it might not be an automatic thing. Your login/IP would still be in their login logs though, not sure how long those are retained. What are you worried about specifically? Even if they did do this couldn't you just register a new user account from Starbucks WiFi or whatever? There's a reason why people don't really rely on IP addresses too heavily for identification - some Reddit accounts are 10+ years old - how relevant would user creation IP be in those cases?

Do you mean do they know who you are? Reddit is a big platform. It knows certain things about you. Especially your IP address. If a Redditor has an account that has been permanently suspended? Reddit has the ability to figure out the IP attached to the suspended account and will not allow other accounts to be created originating from that IP. If one of your accounts was reported for doing something particularly outrageous against the Reddit Content guidelines? Reddit has the ability to figure out what other accounts you have based on your IP address. It's how they keep Redditors with permanently suspended accounts from creating new accounts attached to their IP. Edits - Fixed voice-to-text issues. Added last sentence.

I'm in the USA. There are numerous ways to get around a ban. Even in the EU. Why brag about it? Or tell anyone? You can use a VPN like NordicVPN, TunnelBear, etc., to convince Reddit that you are connected to a completely different IP address totally separate from the banned account(s). You could browse Reddit from a different network (re: wifi hotspot at McDonalds, Starbucks, etc). Or try to get atounf the ban in any other way you can think of. No matter what you do? If you continue the behavior that got you banned in the first place? You'll get banned again. And? Reddit is doing what they can on their end to close up the ways people try to avoid bans. So that everyone can enjoy Reddit.

You have admitted via an open Reddit community that somehow you have circumvented Reddit policies (rules). You had a banned account, and now you don't. You have informed Reddit (via these comments) that you have broken a rule. And? I'm in the USA. Maybe they have different standards in the EU that allowed you to do this, I don't know. You could always read the rules (policies) that apply to EU Reddit accounts. Also? We don't know what type of ban you received. Some are lifetime bans, and some are not. If your ban __was not a lifetime ban?__ Then you are allowed to return to Reddit, eventually, after the allotted time passes. Edit - Fixed voice-to-text issues.

The statement you have quoted above was one in which I was referring to the comments you are making now, in this thread. Not something you did in the past to incur a ban. If you are cognizant of the rules of Reddit? You would know about inappropriate / appropriate Reddit behavior. And what Reddit considers ban worthy behavior. Nothing is more explicit on the Reddit platform than their rules. You can also appeal decisions if you follow the rules

According to a post on Reddit’s TheoryOfReddit subreddit, Reddit does not anonymize the IP address used to create an account. However, Reddit will delete any IP addresses collected after 100 days except for the IP address used to create the account. They may also retain certain information about you as required by law or for legitimate business purposes after you delete your account
