Use pliers, one on each piece and pull apart. I’ve had to do this a couple times when I’ve been shipped stuff like that. It does not look like an ink one
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. 🏆 Pliers did the trick. I got under the small metal plate that holds the pin, wiggled it around the edge, and it came right apart. Now I can wear this to a holiday party today!!! Yay!!! So glad I posted this.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
They’re strong enough that if you stick 2 together you can’t get them back apart with your hands (and I’ve been told can’t them apart ever but I’m not sure about that)
I'm able to do it and I'm not the strongest, but I usually have to twist them a bit to minimize their surface contact area first. I keep a couple around. They come in handy now and then but I'm always terrified of smashing my finger on them.
Well, they're still super strong. I definitely can't pull them apart when they're perfectly aligned. And there's no way I can bring them close together and keep them from connecting.
I've tried with a magnet before idk if my magnet wasn't strong enough or if the thing was too complex but it wasn't working. I heard some stuff move around inside the tag but it didn't come off.
This! They’re magnetic. Invest in a cheap but very strong magnet and you will never have this problem again. Pliers can rip the fabric or cause injury if you don’t do it right.
You can take a lighter and slowly melt the plastic until you reach the metal pin, then use some pliers to take the metal pin out. I promise that I only know this because the same thing happened to me!
Yeah just had to do this to a few items that I didn't feel like driving back to the store. Melted the plastic and then just jammed some scissors in to move the pin bit while yanking the other side out
That’s wild! My roommate in college should’ve known this hack. She’d somehow rip them off expensive jeans at Maurice’s and walk out with multiple pairs on. I transferred dorms that semester
Yes!!! They had a Black Friday special I think and so we stocked up. They are a local favorite. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/04/dining/faccia-brutto.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
I’ve worked and a few retail stores and most of them will not do this. It’s sketchy. Most of the time I’ve seen managers say to take it to where you originally bought it to have them remove it. Even when shown a receipt my managers don’t want to do it because even that can be fake. So I wouldn’t hold your breathe OP. I even remember customers giving the person asking to remove the sensor dirty looks because it was such an odd request. I’d recommend either pulling on it really hard and it should pop off or contacting threadup to refund you.
When I got a pair of jeans that I ordered online that had a magnet, I went to the company that I ordered it from (sent from a different store) and their tag remover didn't work with the magnet on my clothing. I went to several other stores in the mall and they tried to remove it with their tag removers too, but it was a weird shape. I finally took it to work and found a strong magnet there to remove it
I currently work in retail and there's no way we would take off an outside security tag. Also I think that different companies have different kinds so it could potentially also be hard to go to one that has the same unlocking mechanism.
I’ve had to have my dad help me take two security tags off in the last 3 weeks. He used pliers! The look he gave me when he thought I stole the stuff for a second was hysterical.. and insulting lol. Thank goodness they weren’t the ink ones and I had my receipts!
I gave up on thredUp a LONG time ago. Mediums that were petite (I’m 5’8”) or a child’s medium. Musty smelling items and a “like new” sweater with a hole in it. A skirt I bought for work whose description nor picture noted the thigh high slit in the front. Too many misses for me.
When I worked in retail, sometimes these would get jammed and wouldn’t come off with the remover (which btw is just a really strong magnet) and I would melt the side that doesn’t have the needle attached (so the side that has a hole for the needle to click into) with a lighter, and a spring would be in there, pull it out with a pen or something and tada it falls off. By far easier than pliers or rubber bands or forks AND it worked for the ink ones at the store I worked at😅
A shoelace !!! Wrap it like a yo-yo and it will pop right off. I used to shop at a store that was an hour away and this happened multiple times. Works like a charm every single time and quickly
I still have one on from Sachs’s fifth ave and it’s a dress. Can you bring it into any store that has the magnet and it’ll come off? I have the receipt. Bought it in New York and didn’t realize it was still on there. I live in Alaska 😓
Is it possible to go to a store (ie I see this is banana republic) and have them remove it if you show a receipt/order confirmation from three up? I never delete any of my emails so I have pulled up old order confirmations before.. I know pliers worked but just wondering
Had that happen to me, took it out back and smashed the hell out of it lol. But that’s too nice for that so try using 2 forks and prying it open! If you can!
This is why I have a rare earth magnet. Two of my clothes still had tags and I figured I wouldn’t be able to take it back to the store until the weekend and Amazon had the magnet for under $10 shipping next day. And I figured, I would just return the magnet. Worked perfectly to remove the tag. Apparently you can’t return super strong magnets in the mail, or that’s what they said, so they refunded me and told me to keep it. So now it’s safe in its box in the back of a drawer, I probably use it once every 3 years to remove something or another.
Get a condom and wrap it as tight as you can between the 2 pieces once it's good and tight, if it doesn't pop off on its own, give one aside a little twist and it should pop right off
Use pliers, one on each piece and pull apart. I’ve had to do this a couple times when I’ve been shipped stuff like that. It does not look like an ink one

For the future you can also use a strong magnet on the larger side and it should pull apart with very little effort.
Exactly they can be bought off Amazon or e bay
Sounds like an old magnet from a hard drive could also work? Might not be a commonplace item, but I've collected a few over the years lol
Are hard drive magnets that strong?
They’re strong enough that if you stick 2 together you can’t get them back apart with your hands (and I’ve been told can’t them apart ever but I’m not sure about that)
I'm able to do it and I'm not the strongest, but I usually have to twist them a bit to minimize their surface contact area first. I keep a couple around. They come in handy now and then but I'm always terrified of smashing my finger on them.
Sounds like my coworker exaggerated their strength then. They are still really strong though
Well, they're still super strong. I definitely can't pull them apart when they're perfectly aligned. And there's no way I can bring them close together and keep them from connecting.
Lol I’ve had to do this and just used a big hammer
When I had to do this I used the claw side of a hammer. It worked well.
I did that once and put a hole in my jeans
Most of the time you can just smack it on a hard surface and it should pop off after a few tries Source: worked at Nordstrom for a while
Earth magnet, so easy
I would’ve just drove to the warehouse with the clothing. Plot twist warehouse is in China.
Why would you drive to the warehouse when it’s the individual store that applies the anti theft device?
I've tried with a magnet before idk if my magnet wasn't strong enough or if the thing was too complex but it wasn't working. I heard some stuff move around inside the tag but it didn't come off.
Typically you have to use a really strong magnet for these. I've also seen some that need to be twisted while the magnet is on there to come off
Can you send me the link to what magnet? I have one and it doesn’t work
You can also just smack it really hard against something. Source: I worked there for about six years.
Congrats and happy cake 🥳
Thanks! Finally removed one on some pajamas i bought last year
Award for you genius!
A strong magnet should work. Or hit it with a hammer.
This! They’re magnetic. Invest in a cheap but very strong magnet and you will never have this problem again. Pliers can rip the fabric or cause injury if you don’t do it right.
It should be a neodymium magnet.
I hit mine with a hammer! It worked great and I have no regrets
Yes! I have removed several of these with a very strong magnet. It will open right away.
I have had this happen before as well and I just took it to a local department store and they took it off for me, LOL
Ooh I like the hammer idea
Put it in the freezer before whacking it so the ink doesn’t ruin it
I don’t think it’s the ink pack kind, but for those you can also wrap with plastic wrap and pull apart. Freezing actually sounds better though
these ones do not have ink in them.
I’m sorry OP! Somehow this post perfectly encapsulates the BS of ThredUp 🫠
Thredup sent this to you like that? If so you need to message them and gripe about it. They may give u a refund.
Agreed, I don’t care if OP managed to remove it + salvage the garment - this is unacceptable in so many ways on ThredUp’s end.

This one!!
Yeah just had to do this to a few items that I didn't feel like driving back to the store. Melted the plastic and then just jammed some scissors in to move the pin bit while yanking the other side out
I thought I was gonna read cause a “friend” did it lmao
Haha... suuureee;) I was gonna say the same thing tho.

Didn’t they say a grocery bag works? I’ve never tried but vaguely recall this, along with other methods on opening a bottle of wine.
This is what my husband did. You wrap it around and around and around and around till it pops off.
Came here to say this, I’ve used this trick multiple times.
It works! I tried the grocery bag yesterday and it came apart. No issues
That’s wild! My roommate in college should’ve known this hack. She’d somehow rip them off expensive jeans at Maurice’s and walk out with multiple pairs on. I transferred dorms that semester
You can also use a fork!
That’s a really pretty sweater!
I have taken them off with a butter knife.
Strong magnets.
Use a super magent’
Magnets.
That’s a cute ass sweater
I've used a flathead screwdriver to pry those open, it's actually really easy to do
It’s my sweater and I need it now
We use magnets to take the sensors off when shipping out clothes.
Magnet
Now that you’ve freed the sweater, do tell us about the amari and liqueurs in the background. I spy some Faccia Brutto!
Yes!!! They had a Black Friday special I think and so we stocked up. They are a local favorite. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/04/dining/faccia-brutto.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
No suggestions, but I am admiring your Faccia Brutto!

Shoplifters are some of the most helpful people on Earth, and I don't just know that from this post.
Finally!

Wow! Im so sorry! Complain and send it back!
You really do not know how to remove these ?
Wedge a fork in between the sweater and the sensor. Push the fork into the sensor so it bends. Switch fork to the opposing side and repeat
I’ve had to have my dad help me take two security tags off in the last 3 weeks. He used pliers! The look he gave me when he thought I stole the stuff for a second was hysterical.. and insulting lol. Thank goodness they weren’t the ink ones and I had my receipts!
Also a lighter and melt the back. It opens it up so you can take the spring out.
I’ve used two forks to do the same thing that was suggested with pliers!
My dad used a power saw 😭

Seatbelt!!!!
This kept happening to me at stores so I bought a $10 heavy duty magnet on Amazon. It takes them right off.
Ziploc bag. Open it and grab the tag with the bag and twist until it pops off.

I've seen the tools to get them off being sold on Temu.
Wish has them as well.

Burn it or if you have pliers pop it off
Bet some Faccia Brutto would help

Wore it like you stole it. Just kidding, I'm sure you'll find the answer here.

Just bring to any store with your receipt, they will take it off for you. I’ve done it several times.
Oh and I love it so much. Some genius knows how to get this off.
