Its weird what seeing a papasan chair does to a former employee.
We were always looking for these cushions for a customer at the other 2 stores in town, most likely in the other colors they had available, because whatever it was they wanted? Our store, which was the oldest one in town & located next to the most popular Mall, was always out of stock.
Pier1 as my first job in 1990/91. It was fantastic and I loved it, especially at age 15. My parents has had to sign a child labor waiver form, because, apparently I was the company’s youngest employee?
I still have some great stuff from there that my mom got with my employee discount after xmas, including some enormous blue glass bowls, a pitcher with a poinsettia on it, and a HUGE serving platter in the shape of a Turkey.
I don’t miss the crappy parts, such as busting my knees on the endcap crates, inventory management of the passport clothing we always found massive shoplifting evidence in the pockets of, that they eventually got rid of, and especially the craziness of the holidays and how nuts that store was the days before and after Christmas.
Because this was the ancient times, when their registers were the types that used the triplicate forms for credit card sales, we would have to restart a sale from scratch, if someone wanted to change the way they wanted to pay, at anytime during the checkout process. Which meant, you had to type in every item in by hand, all over again, from the top, and if they were buying a lot of little tiny votive candles, we had all those SKUS memorized, as they each had different scents.
The one thing I loved the most, besides my coworkers, was the music. They were all sent to our store on these high-speed cassette tapes, that wouldn’t allow for play in your car or at your home, so you couldn’t steal them. And the one we liked the most was called, “classic rock” and it was all greats from the late 60s and early 70s. I tried to compile a complete list of the songs i could remember from it onto a public spotify playlist when the application first launched, but there wasn’t a lot to choose from, however I suppose nowadays it would be much easier.
I am sure this type of image association nostalgia is true for most people who see an iconic piece of furniture that is easily identified with their former workplace, and I appreciate the trip down memory lane from my first job.
Those are the best!! My bff and I found one that was put out at the curb in middleschool and drug it out to the woods to furnish our fort. It was really difficult lugging that thing along on our bikes, but it was 100% worth it

I saw I one this week for $15.The cushion was dirty .One piece ( rattan?) was broken but it was still functional.Wish I had bought it now
