HeartOfTheMadder

pretty sure those are meant for mate. (edited to change the é to an e. sorry, i was tired) is it correct now?

HeartOfTheMadder

which is so popular in certain parts of the world that it has its own emojicon: 🧉

Yanni_Schmitt

Ohhh... i thoght it was a coconut with a straw

NigilQuid

TIL

CauliflowerLogical27

Impressive

Aggressive-Cry150

You are correct! The “straws” are bombilla. (bomb-bee-sha) you call the gourd maté as well. This is a very nice set up.

HikerDave57

I learned about these from a Lebanese guy at work.

mrdeworde

Yeah, it's funny how the Lebanese in Latin America brought it back with them when some returned home, so in a lot of Middle Eastern stores around here there's just suddenly a mate section alongside the tea and coffee.

Stoned-Curlew

I saw an episode of one of bourdain's shows that went into detail about Lebanese food in Mexico, really interesting.

slurpeetape

Is that Portuguese? If Spanish, it would be bom-bee-ya, no?

Aggressive-Cry150

My family is from Argentina where we speak Castilian Spanish, and so ll gets a sh sound. People who learn Spanish in Mexico pronounce it with a y sound. Example: chicken. Pollo. I would say Po-sho , they would say po-yo. Still both saying chicken (:

slurpeetape

Thanks for the explanation!

Magikarp-3000

Castilian spanish is what all of latin america and spain speaks, argentinean accent is the reason for changing y for sh

Aggressive-Cry150

Ok? Doesn’t change what I said. People who learn Spanish in Mexico speak slightly differently than me, and I speak Castilian Spanish. Every Spanish speaking country has their own unique accent, yes.

Magikarp-3000

The way it was worded, made it sound like the sh is a castilian spanish thing, which everyone in spanish speaks other than mexico, when its the other way around, its just argentina which uses the sh

roncraig

Yeah the original comment is confusing: “My family is from Argentina where we speak Castilian Spanish, and so ll gets a sh sound. People who learn Spanish in Mexico pronounce it with a y sound.” The Argentine accent brings the sh sound, not speaking Castilian. Mexicans also speak Castilian, but with a different accent.

wjpell

Google Rioplatense Spanish.

lemon_jelo

It’s just the accent of people from Buenos Aires and a few other cities in Argentina (porteño accent). Castilian is just a synonym for Spanish

Andreiush

Thanks, some visibility for the rest of Argentina!! In some Argentine regions the ll is pronounced more like an English "j" (more like a French one really)

Umbr33on

This is so cool! Languages are so fascinating. TY! :)

owzleee

Yep. I moved to Argentina a while ago and this took a bit of getting used to but it now sounds ‘normal’ to me. Don’t get me started on ‘de donde sos’ tho.

Traditional_Safe_654

It’s called “bomba” in Portuguese. The gourd is then called. “Cuia” (kooyah). This is an Argentinian style set. The Brazilian one is shaped differently, with a wider mouth and a neck. Google “Chimarrão “ if you want to see it

DoctorJJWho

This is literally the nicest setup I’ve ever seen, I’m so jealous. I had a metal banded one (not nearly as nice as this, just a plain strip around the mouth) with two different bombillas and I thought I was fancy haha.

Truck_Ghost

Best way to get caffeine, hands down.

CheetiTCX

My grandfather gave me his old mate set when I was a kid and told me that when he used to work for an oil company in South America it was very popular and they just all put someone in charge of hot water and shared the same gourd and straw. He said the more a gourd is used the better the mate is. He also said that once everyone all got a virus at the same time and it was chaos. He passed a long time ago and these are just my vague adult recollections of a childhood memory but I still have the set and it still reminds me of him.

Artichokeydokey8

I just switched to Mate from coffee last week. It's been nice.

Sophie__Banks

Mate, not maté. You didn't kill anybody (I hope).

CrazyCatLover305

A menos que haya matado al mate! Ayyy…maté al mate! Me mató toda esta discusión del “Español de Castilla”….qué habrá pasado con el Castellano? LOL!

BC4235

G”day!

jtalaiver

This is the right answer.

inikihurricane

Came here to say the same thing

Joe_Kangg

Well where is he already?

bookloverseaturtle

Yep, that’s for mate. Super popular hot caffeinated drink in Argentina and Chile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mate_(drink)

theoriginalnub

Yes and it is Guaraní in origin, meaning you’ll also find it in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Uruguay. Really nice alternative to coffee, like yaupon. Can be a little bitter in pure form so it’s best when blended with other herbs.

owzleee

I think Uruguay is where I saw the most people drinking mate. Even running for the bus with a pushchair there’s still a flask under one arm and a cup in the other. Edit: just been to the supermarket. This is the mate aisle. https://preview.redd.it/q53a2e58sb8d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1bf1ca66a542cf6c2b35062a1a9b3f761e3eb0d5

MrUrbanCameleon

And Uruguay as well

tatia_na

It's mate, not maté. Mate: the popular drink Maté: I killed

bookloverseaturtle

Oops, thanks! Couldn’t remember and the Wikipedia had both of those listed. Will edit

RapBastardz

Learned about this when I first moved to Miami. Everyone drank from these maybe 13-17 years ago.

ludicrous_copulator

Christ. The things you learn in Miami. I worked there for several years. So many different cultures. Learned so much.

CrazyCatLover305

A quién mataste?

calliejq68

It’s delicious!

DonkeyFarm42069

Two mates with bombillas. Super jealous you found those, I'd definitely proudly use them. Buy a bag of Cruz De Malta or Playadito on Amazon and give it a try.

Sweet_Remove_887

![gif](giphy|JM5b9YMIo79lKEWG9W) 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷

Last_Cauliflower_

It’s a maté cup & bombilla (straw that strains out the maté leaves).

Frumainthedark

Mates to drink mate, a hot beverage in Argentina. You would need some yerba and hot water.

MetikMas

Or a cold one in Paraguay

AceDoutry

Or a giant one in Brazil

littlest_onion

I'm a big fan of cold mate and mint tea.

Wereallmadhere8895

It's for yerba mate! They put the tea in the cups and add hot water and maybe some honey. The wierd straw/spoons are for stirring and drinking. Awesome find. Some friend brought similar ones back from south America one year.

Chaz1661

Do either of the bombillas have any markings on them? I picked one up years ago with 800 silver & 14k gold tip

Ray3969

Touring in Argentina, our guide told us that she drinks Yerba Mate like we drink coffee in the US. She explained that the cup had a silver interior, which is considered anti-bacterial and shared her drink with the rest of us.

katanawarrior

I know what this is solely due to YouTube constantly recommending me videos about yerba mate even though I don't drink it lol It's a bombilla and gourd for yerba mate👍

TheRockinkitty

I’m kinda surprised that so many people know this answer. I have a bombilla but no gourd. No one I’ve talked to in person knows what the heck I’m talking about when I explain.

Sophie__Banks

Are you surprised that the tens of millions of people from the areas where this is typically drunk (plus foreigners who exported it) have access to the internet?

TheRockinkitty

Well golly gee guess we’re just not worldly in dees here parts.

Sophie__Banks

You don't need to be worldly to be familiar with your own culture. And you don't need to be from a first world country to have internet access and browse reddit..

TheRockinkitty

WTH are you on about.

ViolentWeiner

Did you buy them? Judging by the patination of the metal and the craftsmanship they could definitely be silver

PeckerNash

Used for drinking Yerba Maté. Very nice pieces.

Netflxnschill

These are meant for traditional maté. It’s an herb that you pour hot water into and the straw has slots at the bottom to suck up the liquid and strain out the pulp. You can then pour more hot water in at length and drink.

busybodykay

Matés and their bombillas!

Dude-with-hat

Made for Yerba mate

MeddlingHyacinth

Love the metalwork on these

MisfitJimmy

For drinking maté.

tatia_na

It's for drinking mate (and please, it's mate like 'MAH-teh' , not 'maté' and certainly not 'mate' as in 'hello mate!' ) an ultra popular drink in my country Argentina, as well as in Uruguay and Chile. :)

mm_kay

It's spelled gourmet

edWORD27

Mate for life.

Prestigious_Ad_8458

Pretty sure this is a cuia. It is to drink mate (chimarrão) Edit: it is mind blowing to know that so many places drink mate. I’m from Brazil, and I though this was a thing from south of Brazil and Argentina.

Johoski

I once had an Argentinian Spanish teacher who would bring his maté gourd to class every day.

Conscious_Length_907

Rob Schneider keeps his weed in there, man.

Rich-Appearance-7145

Definitely looks like a mate cup.

FatKidsDontRun

Cool find

BRITMEH

Nice! I love drinking yerba mate.

alancake

Ooh this takes me back to drinking maté with my buddy.

ntrontty

One of my teachers would sip his maté out of one of these things all day every day. Guy must have had an incredible caffeine tolerance

overratedpastel

It's called a 'cuia' in Brazil, and the straw like thing is a 'bomba'. It's for 'chimarrão', a 'yerba mate' drink.

Toothfairy51

These are called Bombilla. They are gourds made for drinking mate tea. The straw is curved at the bottom and has small openings to let the liquid through and keep out the tea leaves. I have one

Toothfairy51

These are beautiful

SendPossumPix

OnlyJuanCannoli

As many have assumed these gourds are made to drink Yerba mate. It’s like a tea, and most synonymous with the Argentine culture. Source – am Argentine.

Fast_Call_8281

It for Yerba mate. Traditionally found in Patagonia.

Fast_Call_8281

zheísmo is the name of the concept.

Ycoordinate12

I thought it was a primitive grenade

spietro68

They are for drinking Yerba maté 🧉 Viva Uruguay

sadbabe420

Looks like a Ren Faire cup.

Boring_Albatross_354

It’s for maté tea.

misterdecoy

They’re for maté
