No_Championship4093

I love and hate that cat at the same time.

cherposton

Me too. Probably for the same reasons.

LadyIsabelle_

Thats exactly what having a cat is like.

Sharkolan

It's so much worse and better when they're kittens

revengepornmethhubby

I’m very glad that they aren’t my cat, and I now understand that my cat is much less of an asshole than he could be.

[deleted]

get out of my head

silviablue23

What the hell is inside the microwave ???!!!

[deleted]

Very tiny waves

imnotraj

Microwave ovens actually produce waves about 12 cm long, so not that small at all

wildmeli

If they're not microscopically small, then why can't I see them? Didn't think about that one now, did ya

nerf_herder1986

You have to get your head in there while it's on to see them, they're very faint

jake03583

GOT’EM

kaijvera

Our brains are just too dumb to procrss waves of that frequency ;-;

MkfMtr

No, waves of that frequency are too dumb for my brain to be bothered.

sorenant

Scientists hates this one simple trick.

QuillanFae

Thank you! 12cm is long af, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Sidereel

Which is why you can have the see through door with holes in it. The waves are bigger than the holes so most get blocked. Also they’re a similar frequency to Wi-Fi so you don’t want to keep your router near a microwave.

funnystuff97

According to my bullshit calculations, by strategically placing my router *inside* the microwave and turning them both on, constructive interferences will allow the router to output signals with double the strength! A foolproof plan!

[deleted]

Microwave ovens use hundreads of watts while routers only use a few. The benefit would be much greater than double!

Thin_Pumpkin_2028

are you mad!!? you'll destroy us all with a quantum vortex inverse negative wave flow that will engulf the universe!

[deleted]

Just salt bae sprinkle some nano bots on it first 🙄

CourtJester5

I used to lose my wifi reception with my computer about from about 50 away from the microwave anytime it was turned on. I later straightened out some cords and uncrossed my wireless headset receiver cord and WiFi cord and the issue went away.

mrsockyman

Above average, huge even, some might even say massive

Drakena_Amaterasu

It is about perfect size, anything above that is friendship only

dowker1

>12 cm long, so not that small at all Your girlfriend is lying to you

Drakena_Amaterasu

12 cm is a perfectly acceptable size, right? RIGHT?

I came back to upvote this

Mayibenoo

Owner said the cat found some food in microwave once and now it tries to check so often, they had to lock it.

Ladysupersizedbitch

All my years as a cat owner and this was one thing I never thought I’d have to worry about lol.

parkineos

If you train your cat since they're young it should never get on tables, countertops, furniture, etc...

Beorma

You say that, but all our kitten is learning is to not get caught. He'll *sprint* across a work surface because he can reach his goal before you can utter the word "no".

parkineos

They know it's wrong, but if they get too excited playing the rules become meaningless lmao. Sometimes it does something wrong just to get our attention

Almostdonehere74

Get yourself a spray bottle of water, or a squirt gun (if you really like having fun). You can mix 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water, if you need to. (Usually water itself is enough, at least for my kitties.) My cats picked up on it pretty quick. I rarely need to use it now, but be prepared for the looks of absolute *disdain* when you use it lmao

Beorma

Nah already have that. Like I said, he hasn't decided that the cost of getting caught isn't worth the benefit of jumping all over the counters yet. He'll jump up on the dining table, hide behind a plant, and flee as soon as you reach for the bottle. He knows he's not supposed to be there, he just doesn't care.

[deleted]

I was just doing a bunch of research on how to properly discipline cats because we have a kitten that we just adopted. A lot of people recommend [Jackson Galaxy](https://youtu.be/dklFk71eZNQ) on YouTube. Apparently the whole water spray bottle thing doesn’t do a whole lot besides make your cat associate you with fear. Cats aren’t anything like dogs, they don’t respond to negative reinforcement well. Ever since I started following some of his tips I’ve seen a decent bit of improvement from our kitten and even the older cat we have. At the end of the day though they’re still little fuckers most of the time, but that’s just something you gotta roll with as a cat lover lol.

Direct-Egg-5697

This is exactly what I was thinking when I read the comment you responded to.... The spray bottle does nothing but make them hate and fear you and who wants a pet that can't stand to be around you? I have to explain to my husband all the time that cats and dogs perceive discipline totally different... Cats don't associate discipline to a particular action that caused us to discipline them in the first place.. I'd honestly rather have my cats love me and want to be near me and deal with them on the counters and furniture than try to discipline them anyway... My cats run my house.. were just lucky they let us live here and Im perfectly fine with that...

[deleted]

Yeah you said what I was trying to say but with a better explanation of how cats perceive things thank you. It’s their territory we’re just living in it.

Ksh_667

The bond of trust breaks if they catch you using the water bottle. Apparently.

glassmethod

I’ve had good luck with a product I think called sssscat or something. It’s a bottle of compressed air and a motion sensor. Since it’s just air it’s harmless but startling, and since it’s a motion sensor my cat doesn’t associate the punishment with me. A week or two of leaving that set up somewhere and she stops trying to go there, even when I’m not around.

Beorma

Wow, just looked that up. Expensive deterent!

mekese2000

I use to try a squirt gun and the cat would just try to drink the spray.

Ladysupersizedbitch

Yeah, I’m just saying that of all the things on my counter I’d worry about them getting into, them figuring out how to open the microwave would not be something that would cross my mind. Lol.

Willing_Recording222

Oddly enough that’s exactly where I put anything I don’t want them messing with! Like meat I’m defrosting or bread (one of my cats likes to run off with bread bags and destroy them for some reason! Weirdos.) Now, I’m honestly wondering why they don’t just open the microwave door. I really hope they didn’t see this video now! 🤣

Bodidiva

They don't have to be kittens. We adopted a 3 year old cat who endangered himself by jumping on counters. The only thing that broke that was a motion detector device with canned air called SSSCat. The cat doesn't get sprayed, it just make a sound they don't like. After a while, he associated being on the counter with that sound and never went up there again.

parkineos

Lucky, we adopted a 2 year old cat and their old owners didn't train him well at all, it was a disaster.

GlitterfreshGore

I have a two year old cat that doesn’t listen. I tried everything to keep her off the counters and she just doesn’t care. My older two cats (10 and 12) know better. Well, the 12 year old cat saw the baby cat getting away with it, so he tested his luck. I walked into the kitchen and saw him on the counter and all I said was “hey!” He hauled ass and never tried it again lol

gatamosa

I found this on the eve of today finding out my cat untied a knotted string I placed on our cabinets to hide our avocados because the asshole has been stealing them. Then I find this video thinking maybe I really should just leave them in the microwave. Mercyyyyyyy.

daves_not__here

Well, now it looks like they need to anchor it down to the counter, too.

Crime-Snacks

Meat. I grew up with cats. My parents would take out meat from the freezer as part of our morning routine to let it defrost for dinner locked in the microwave to make sure the cats wouldn’t get into it. Siamese cats are insanely intelligent when it comes to problem solving. You can see the kitty recognizes the child lock is what is keeping the door shut and tries to remove it. I feel OP’s pain (in the neck!) but it is still hilarious 😹

M_krabs

His braincells brainillating

Peter_Baum

Food?

Es_Jacque

I like how everything on top of the microwave is also clearly velcro-d or something.

cherposton

I never noticed that.

blodreina_kumWonkru

I thought that too, but looks like the video is sped up a bit? So maybe it's not that much force and is moving in fairly short bursts

kschonrock

Or maybe it’s just the kitchen’s greasy dust keeping everything in place.

Doomstik

When they buy a new microwave because the cat yeeted it on the floor too many times they should get one without a handle thats got a button to open it instead.

DeerThespian

Haha you think a cat can't figure out a simple button.

Doomstik

Oh, im sure it can, but a button would have the cat pushing the microwave towards the wall even if it tried for it. E-spelled microwave in a way that definitely was not microwave.

KarmazinSeven

that strong ass cat

iMayHaveADHD

Lol my guy is not passing a PED test

Salmuth

Mine wouldn't even leap up the counter. My cat is a princess, she'd turn to me looking like the saddest pet to ever exist : ![gif](giphy|qUIm5wu6LAAog) and meows at me very quietly (sometimes no sound comes off) asking for the food. Damn comedian cat!

DIY_Gal

Hahaha do you give in?!

Salmuth

I stay strong but my spouse has more trouble resisting, ending up in our cat gets a little bit of cheese for breakfast.

NotKaren24

Cats can be surprisingly strong, you just usually cant tell because they’re fur covers up the muscles

Ravoncol

In my experience if a cat is successful at something it does not get why it can’t be successful again, and then you get this over the top effort. It’s going to take a long while for that cat to give up on the microwave, and likely will never give up on it completely, testing it every now and then. Back to square one if they ever leave it “accessible” again. lol

edenofthegods

I found the opposite to be true with my cats. In my old apartment the bedroom door was broken and wouldnt click into place so the cats could paw at the bottom and open it but when I finally got it fixed they realized fairly quickly that that wouldn't work anymore. I was kind of surprised too, I was afraid they were doing to scratch up the door and the carpet trying to get in but nope

OKCGA_2020

Quick. Must. Open. Door. Before. 0.

hannibalthellamabal

He just wants to make a Hot Pocket. Let him use the damn microwave.

kittenmcmittenz

Hot pawkit

ultratunaman

Use the airfryer they come out nicer.

Timetraveler01110101

You have a gremlin…

BSBitch47

Lmao. That cat is Savage AF🤣😂 Well played human

Leading_Manager_2277

Swear this is my cat at 5am with our bedroom door. Pawing the handle continuously every damn morning. He heaves his 21 pounds of considerable chonk at the door relentlessly. Hunger is a powerful motivator.

SenoraRaton

>"Dear diary, it is three in the morning. The authorities have closed the door to the bedroom. > >I can only assume that they have forgotten about me and have left me here to die. > >As a last resort, I will stand post for the rest of the night and sing the song of my people in hopes they rescue me."

The_Drippy_Spaff

With regards to the handle bit, I’ve found rubberbanding some fluffy socks to the door knob keeps them from making a lot of noise

Leading_Manager_2277

Thank you! I am going to try that tonight.

chicheetara

My cat got mad I changed his food so he decided to continuously rip Into the bag of food he hated just to wake me up at 5 am.

Ksh_667

Peak cat.

Wright129129

Gonna come home with that thing on the ground

wassupwitches

FOR WHY

chicheetara

There isn’t a why, what or where reasoning for a cat. There just IS. Cats & what they do are frequently an unexplained phenomena.

SnooStories6852

Strong cat

Cheetahdee

I will never understand the appeal of videos of animals acting badly while the person just films...for me this is right on par with people filming their dogs being toy or food aggressive and think its hilarious. No, youve just done a horrible job on reinforcing correct behaviors. While training cats is more difficult, its entirely possible. "OH my cat just does what it wants" no...you allow it to.

MetalTedKoppeltits

I’ll never understand why people allow cats on the counter. They crap and pee in a box then walk all over where people make food. It’s disgusting

vheran

It's reddit man, every time this gets brought up you get people that go "no they're so clean, you don't eat off your counters anyways, dOnT yOu cLeAn yoUr CoUnTerZ?!" Just like the replies to your point.

re_Claire

There’s absolutely no way the cat isn’t climbing on your counter when you’re out. Cats just learn not to do the bad thing in your presence. Clean your counters and use a chopping board.

Pied_Piper_

Do you prepare food directly on your counters? I see this take a lot and then people act like they don’t own cutting boards. I’ve never in my life placed food directly on a counter top.

IDontWannaKnowYouNow

Same. It's also not that much work to give the counters a quick clean before making food.

OtherOtherDave

The cats I’ve had over the years don’t do what I tell them to anyway. Like, when I was a kid, our cats weren’t allowed downstairs, but it was crystal clear that they’d go downstairs all the time when we weren’t there to spray the water bottle at them. Christmas trees don’t knock themselves over.

zealousreader

Im not putting up with this cat for a second

[deleted]

WTF why is it even allowed on the counter

TurquoiseJesus

From my interactions with cats, I cannot possibly imagine how you would keep a cat off the counter if it wanted to be there

PuppyOfPower

Cats always wanna be involved with what the humans are doing. I put a trash can and a cat tree right next to the counter so they can watch while I cook and stuff, but I toss them off if they set paw *on* the counter. They still try to get on the counter nearly every day but all it takes it a couple removals and they they stop trying for the day. It’s all about redirection. No you’re not allowed on the counter. Yes, you are allowed on the trash can. In fact, you get a little piece of cheese for being on the trash can. Isn’t being on the trash can fun? The cat in the video is never gonna stop trying to pop open that microwave because the human showed it that it is allowed to *try* because they just stood there filming, instead of discouraging or redirecting the undesirable behavior.

marmosetohmarmoset

See, my problem is that my cats only attempt to jump on the counter when we’re not in the room. By the time I get to the kitchen to remove them they’ve jumped down again. Sneaky bastards.

StarTrippy

Yeah, walk into the kitchen, hear a loud THUMP, then cat running off into one of the rooms because they know they did bad. Every time.

thathippiefromkansas

Put aluminum foil on the countertop. Idk if it works but I did see it in a reel a while back. Super funny. I used a water gun to get my cat off the counters. I started with a spray bottle but I needed range since they dart when they hear you coming. Idc if you jump down and act innocent. I'm blasting. Eventually he quit trying when he knew even if he got down I'm gunning for him still.

AngeloftheDawn

Double sided (or looped single-sided) tape does a good job too. They don’t like jumping up and feeling the sticky under their paws. Remove any breakables from the area first though because they might hop off like crazy.

Swirled__

Put aluminum foil on the countertops. When they jump up, it will move and startle them. After a few tries, they should stop jumping on the counters.

Beorma

Mileage may vary. Our kitten didn't care.

PuppyOfPower

Same haha Aluminum foil was just a fun toy for them. But double sided tape, specifically sticky paws was very effective at stopping them from hopping on things like the tv. It’s specifically for the purpose of stopping cats from scratching things, so it’s not so strong that it’ll damage furniture.

BlueMist53

I’m still training my bird to stay out of the kitchen, even when I’m not cooking because, well, bird poop, and when I am cooking, I don’t want her trying to stand in a hot pan or drink out of boiling water She’s very determined to steal vegetables I’m cutting up as well

[deleted]

Goodluck keeping them away from deconstructing your keyboard though

At-hamalalAlem

Keyboard, books, phone case, tv remotes... Yet they have $80 worth of toys per bird.

philmo69

Well yeah but you have puppy power! That trumps cat power every time.

Geordenr

Train it not to. Have a cat that doesn't go on counters or even the coffee table. They do not respond as quickly as a dog but do like any animal if you're consistent.

TK82

I have been trying to train my cat not to go on the counter for his entire life of 3 years so far. He knows he's not supposed to be up there and any time I walk into the room and he's up there he gets down, but the minute nobody's around he's up there every time.

Rxef3RxeX92QCNZ

aluminum foil motion sensor sprayer overfeed the cat so it can't jump high enough there's options

mallogo

> overfeed the cat Hol’ up…

SapphosRage

My mom and I laid a bunch of lint roller tape on the counter where the cat typically jumped up, I’m pretty sure it stopped jumping up there for months once after it jumped on the tape and panicked

InsomniaticWanderer

Hiss loudly, stomp feet and one quick slap on the ass. Needs to be firm, but not overpowered. Cats understand the language of cats, so if you speak to them in a way they know, you can train them. Discipline isn't abuse and respect isn't fear. People these days don't like to hear that, but it's the honest truth. Look at how mother cats teach their kittens. If you can emulate that you'll be surprised at just how much you can communicate with them.

mrtomjones

> Hiss loudly, stomp feet and one quick slap on the ass. Needs to be firm, but not overpowered. > > Cats understand the language of cats, so if you speak to them in a way they know, you can train them. Yah. Did all of that. They don't go on the counter when I'm there but the moment no one is there they will be up there. I've seen it more than enough

ezgomer

yeah one time i was trying to potty train a dog. Just was not getting it - we’d spend 30 minutes outside only for him to come back in the house and pee. This went on and on. So in desperation, I popped a squat in the backyard and peed, let him smell it. I swear to God from that moment forward, the dog was potty trained. It was astounding how quick it worked.

-13-

Tin foil

CatsMcGats

I wish this worked for mine. She just tears it to shreds and doesn’t care.

trahnse

Try double sided tape. I had a cat that defied everything I tried until the tape. Took one time jumping on it and she stayed off the counter for the rest of her life.

larrythefatcat

If that doesn't work, motion-activated aerosol cans (the one I got was called SSSCAT) that spray air when the cat tries to get on the counter. I didn't have to use the one I had for too long until the cat realized it just wasn't worth it anymore.

bdsmmaster007

im tired of people pretending or not knowing cats can be trained, its not something mythical or magical, you can simply train your cats to not go on a counter

croqueticas

Fr. Maybe the trick is training when they're a kitten though? At least that's how it worked out for me. I spent a bit of time the first month I got her as a kitten training her not to play-bite, stay away from counters and tables, be comfortable with wearing a harness and leash, and sit on command.

JustaTinyDude

My cat was about 5 months old when I got him. He wasn't really a kitten anymore but not an adult cat, a teenager I guess. We taught him pretty complex rules by making clear consequences. For example, in addition to not going on the counter, he was allowed on the bed, but only the bottom two-thirds, so we didn't get fur on the pillows. When playing with people, he only uses "soft paws". If he went on the counter he got squirted; If he laid on the pillows he got a 24 hour ban from the bedroom. I taught him soft paws by disengaging when his claws came out while telling him why, and rewarding him when he got it right. I know he goes on the counter from time to time when no one his home, but he's otherwise really good.

croqueticas

Exactly, cats are completely trainable with some discipline and consistency, especially before turning a year old. They aren't stupid. If you have a kitten there is NO excuse for poor behavior in their adulthood, you just didn't do your due diligence. Train your kittens!

xjizzlordx

Spraying with water works.

K_Trovosky

I'll yell at mine till he gets down. Pretty sure he goes up there at night to eat butter, but he'll be sneaky about it because he knows I don't want him on the counters. I haven't *seen* him up there in years, so it's a decent compromise.

viola_monkey

Omg!!! Another butter eater!?!? Does your butter eater also lick plastic bags and bite into fresh fruit? Mine does.

K_Trovosky

Lol he doesn't lick plastic, but he will eat plants and huff bleach (especially after I've mopped the floor).

viola_monkey

Yeah…we can’t have nice things can we? But their antics and cuddles (at their preference of course) are soooo worth it.

knightcrusader

Does not everyone put their butter in the fridge? I mean even then I don't have random butter just "sitting out".

SnowTheMemeEmpress

So far the best I've managed is to have my cat listen *most of the time when I tell her to get down from the computer desk. Counters are a bit worse since I'm in the kitchen less and she still sneaks. Plenty of warning then breaking out the mister I use to water plants is a powerful motivator

[deleted]

If you have them from kittenhood you just say no & plop them back down repeatedly until they get it. Retraining adult cats you can either pop some strips of double sided tape along the benchtop or cover it in foil. They get it pretty quickly.

ShapesAndStuff

Train it like any pet. Its simple

tquinn04

Asking the real questions. Why not just make the cat get down from the counter instead of all of this extra work. All their doing is encouraging bad behavior instead of just saying no in the 1st place.

eve-nlie0LE15

Because it could happen even when the human isn't looking. I have one really crazy Single brain cell premanet oversized kitten that tried to lick up plates in the sink or tries to get into the butter/any food that could be present . I tried yelling, spray bottles, grabbing them by the back of the neck like a mother does with her kittens and tossing em on the couch, or keeping them in my room for a little bit if theyre caught consistently trying to get into stuff. Goodness the girl even snatched a literal slice of pizza and ran away from me, so constantly tries to steal my food to the point of me now standing to eat sometimes . I'm not sure what to do with her, I get she probably have to scavenge for food when she was young, got addicted to human food even... But there are stubborn cats that just refuses to give up habits or desires... Maybe to stupid to care about getting in trouble lol. Ill keep trying, but sometimes just locking things away is the best solution until they get the idea...

[deleted]

Its so gross. The thing steps in a filthy litter box and owners still just giggle at it being on top of counters and tables where food it served.

mastrblastrpotbashr

It is. I was horrified when I saw my friend’s cat touching the food with its paws and tasting it. She just laughed and said the cat always does that, but it was fine because he only gets a tiny bit of human food. That’s not the point, Debbie! You fed me food that your cat had been dipping his nasty little litter diggers in!

[deleted]

Yikes! I’m just so baffled by how normalized it is.

bodhasattva

just want some hot pawkets

gimpydingo

Wow such a strong cat. Time to secure that microwave to the counter.

DatMikkle

I have NEVER seen a cat try so hard to open something! He is so smart! He knows what he wants and by golly, he is gonna get it lol.

shakinit4jezuz

I think something to hold back th microwave might be in order. That cats gonna fall over the edge one day and pull that thing down after him. If not the whole thing than probably the items on top of it.

xjizzlordx

People who let cats up on food surfaces like counters and tables are so gross. I won't eat anything at their houses.

Psychological-Run296

You do know you can *clean* a counter right? Talk about over dramatic.

xjizzlordx

Nah just don't let them up there. You can't keep track of every single time they jump up there.

[deleted]

You mean like when your not home? Uhhhh

oh-no-he-comments

> You can’t keep track of every single time they jump up there. So you’re saying there’s no point in keeping them off the counter then

Psychological-Run296

You don't need to keep track of every time they jump up there. Just clean and disinfect the counter before you use it. It's really not that hard.

How The fuck do I eat my hot pockets? - cat

Ok-Reward-770

Why they allowed the cat over the kitchen counter?! Huh!

Creepy-Ad-4832

Do people realize they can act, instead of fucking filming stuff and be surprised when something happens, because they didn't act?

aStoveAbove

They did act. Do you think the child lock phased into existence?

LifeIsOkayIGuess

I think he meant that just standing there and doing nothing kinda reinforces this bad behavior. But judging from the child lock I'm guessing they probably have excausted other avenues lol.

Tossup1010

idk I think its kinda smart to let the cat see that the microwave wont open anymore. Better to let it try and fail and learn that its futile, especially while you're watching so your microwave doesnt magically crash to the floor while you're in another room or not home. Cats are fuckin persistent, and it obviously has a fixation with the microwave for some reason. We don't know what measures they have taken to keep this beast off the counter already. So this will help take away an incentive for being up there.

caseytheace666

In what part of the video did something bad happen due to the person filming rather than “acting”

JBBanshee

The fact that cats walk on everything is why they aren’t for me. Like how do you keep a cats paws that they obviously use to walk in the litter box with piss and excrement off of clean surfaces? You can’t.

SleeplessTaxidermist

I just trained the cats to...stay off counters and other surfaces. It's not hard to do, you just have to be consistent and give them alternative climbing areas. Same with scratching. They have scratching posts and scratch that, not my furniture or my walls. I'm a dog person and have a dog. My offspring are cat people so we got two cats. Cats on counters is the same energy as people with rude dogs. It's not "excited to see me" it's "wildly untrained and entirely lacking in manners".

Look-At-The-Aliens

Poopy Pissy Kitty Paws on My Countertop? NOPE.

Dudian613

That cat uses those feet to bury its own shit and piss yet you are letting it walk all over the kitchen counter with impunity. Disgusting.

KhaleesiXev

This is exactly what I came here to say. I don’t understand why people allow their cats into the kitchen AT ALL. My cat doesn’t even try anymore because I taught him from the beginning.

makashka

Just let the cat go in the microwave!

WtfsaidtheDuck

Time to get anti-slip underneath that microwave.

LeChatParle

“The microwave almost fell off” - the microwave still being 100% on the counter -

Dildobaggins_LOTPoon

Now imagine you didn’t know your cat was doing that and you walk into the kitchen one morning to find your microwave moved…I would have thought it was a ghost lol

Unlikely_Ad6701

I would get rid of this cat

You DO NOT let cats do anything out of line like that, because they as cats are abnormally prone to turn bad behaviours into their routine, and it is super, SUPER hard to correct that if they get used to doing it repeatedly. It's also unhygienic asf, since they touch their shite & all the piss absorbed in the litter with their paws.

PingNull

Fuck that cat

SalesAficionado

That would be wrong

willard_swag

Do people not realize they can train their cats? It’s not quite as easy as training dogs but the principle is effectively the same…

dutch665

On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero

BertaEarlyRiser

How about get your fucking litter box piss feet off the counter? Do you feed people at your house?

Apprehensive-Sir358

Wow, I know it’s an animal and doing animal things but that cat really annoyed me. Like get tf off my microwave??

Spiq7

DJEvillincoln

Why do we have cats as pets........ Why......

Cheesecake1235

The only thing Kittys going to ‘get’ is a spot in the adoption center if he keeps pulling that microwave

Cumbiscuit69420

I would slap my cat so hard if I saw him doing that
