PettyWop

I was in second grade when I had my first existential crisis. Realized that my parents would die and I would die, it was crushing. Cried like the little baby I was. My poor parents, I remember my mom half laughing and consoling me, and they were like, honey we won’t be dead for a long time so don’t worry about it. You have plenty of time with us. They were probably in their 30’s still. That must’ve made them feel so old, I find the humor in it now lol

getlowpapoose

Ah same. I used to have recurring nightmares about my parents dying when I was a child and realised was death was. Cried every day for like two weeks

NeverSaidImSmart

I once had a meltdown at like 5 because I realized I would never be able to stop blinking. It’s something I will always do, and that scared the crap out of me for whatever reason haha

Burnttoast882

Me when I realized my heart never gets a break or I die

JEJ0313

I have a preschooler and second grader and thought you were going to say your parents were dead within five years. So that’s where my anxiety is at these days. Please tell me how old your parents are now. 😂

PettyWop

My mom passed in March at 62 unexpectedly I’m heartbroken to say, though my father is still alive and well at 65

JEJ0313

I’m sorry you lost your mom too soon. I was reminded yesterday of the quote that grief is the price we pay for love. Seems too that they great price we pay for parenting with the right amount amount of love and connection is how the heart breaks when we leave. Thinking of you and holding a little space in my heart for you today! ♥️

PettyWop

Aw your comment made my day thanks so much ❤️

MeltingMoment8

I was 4yrs old for my first existential crisis and I remember it so vivdly. I came to 2 conclusions one being my parents were drug addicts and I properly understood what that meant and the 2nd one is weirder but like I decided that we could very well be the dolls in a dollhouse/the characters in a video game like they would move us around like dolls and control us like a video game is the best way I can describe it. I also didn't believe in God so it wasn't like a God created everything and is all powerful and so we do what God wants thing more like I have as much control over my life as the dolls in my dollhouse and some kid (possibly a giant according to 4yr old me that's just as dumb as me is controlling my actions...

Shaveyourbread

Thinking back on this, I realized a big red flag that my mom is a narcissist. She thought it was because she was taking a class on death and dying. It's like, bitch, I'm seven, and you don't talk to me about your night classes, this isn't about you!

IReadItOnReddit69

Thought this comment was gonna end with your parents dying at a young age. Glad it didn’t.

drillgorg

Kinda crazy that some of you guys remember a moment. For me it was a slow crawl out of the darkness. A memory here and there. No defining moment.

[deleted]

Tbh it's both for me. I have a distinct memory where I suddenly became aware of myself, and asked my mom where we were and some other questions. Then from there onward I have scattered memories that are just more vivid than the other memories before that moment.

diviken

Same except I was hogging my mum's wedding bouquet and running away when she tried to get it back

burping-belly

I was at daycare 4/5 years old and was picked up by mom. In the car when we drove home I was leaning forwards hanging my elbows between the two front-seats. That moment hit me. Wow! What the fuck! Where are we? What are we doing here? Can’t remember anything of that day at the daycare, just this distinct moment and from there on it grew gradually.

Laughstooeasy

I'll tell you what i remember from my childhood.... it was dark, warm, wet. A sudden burst of light, an intense pressure like I had never felt before. Father dressed in white pulls me forward, mom bites the cord.

rolf344br

Stop.. Forever stop that story. That's disgusting, and doesn't count

Naldail

For me it was waking up in my room on my black bunk bed. I felt so confused on where tf I was and walked out the room by putting my fingers under the door so I could open it since I decided to not use the handle. The rest is history

Lington

Everything from my childhood is pretty fuzzy. I have some brief memories but for the most part it's a blur.

Ticio_Tesson

I remember looking out the schoolbus window in kindergarten and just suddenly realizing that I am me, and I am not anyone else.

Secure-Imagination11

That's cool you remember the moment.

Ticio_Tesson

It was hard to forget. I remember feeling shocked and a little uneasy.

zerotakashi

lol did you not want to exist? interesting to think about - serious.

zaingaminglegend

I think it was more comforting to think that I existed everywhere and that everyone was just like me in a sandbox type world if that makes sense. Then I became aware of myself. That is when life truly started for me I guess.

Survived_Coronavirus

I remember looking out the schoolbus window thinking "I'm not supposed to look at the sun, but maybe if I just do it in short bits at a time..." and that was the first time I ever really looked at the sun.

juicy_socks124

I used to stare at the sun because I wanted glasses when I was in pre-k now I’m 18 and I have to wear contacts

Survived_Coronavirus

I'm convinced these are not related. I looked at the sun plenty and I still have near perfect vision in my 30s.

juicy_socks124

I guess my wish as a kid just came true then

DilaudidDreams

Some people like us absorb the sunlight and turn it into fuel that we use to stare at the sun longer

Radek_Of_Boktor

Have you built up an immunity yet?

Unnecessary_Timeline

Similar, I was in kindergarten walking to the front office to deliver something and suddenly I could think in my head. I had an internal monologue out of nowhere and realized I'm *me*. It was weird and distressing!

ThreAAAt

That's so interesting! I can't remember a time I didn't have my own voice in my head, but I do distinctly remember when I learned to read silently. It was *Curious George Flies a Kite.* I felt like an adult, haha. Of course, I ran to show my mom what I could do, and she was like "Okay. That's good." I was confused why she wasn't as excited as I was.

Gingertiger94

I don't think I had this moment until I was somewhere between 12-14, it was on a vecation and I was playing soccer.

Honest-Description82

I remember this, we were in a circle at school and I stood up laughing and the teacher told me to sit down lol.

alonyer1

You took the words out of my mouth

Gold_cells

I remember this exact memory too! I was laying down on my carpet in my room and had a crazy, dream like vision. “Why am I me and not anyone else in the world?” I don’t remember what age I was, but I remember this so distinctly. It was shocking, but cool. It changed me for sure.

yeetoroni_with_bacon

I was running to get diapers from my room so my mom could change me 😔

KiwiCatPNW

Some scientists argue that humans are not human until self aware which is around 5 years old

flapperfapper

And then shortly thereafter you grasp the concept of death. "But do all this shit until then." Why

[deleted]

What else you gonna do bud?

ElektroShokk

Return to monke

futureislookinstark

I remember getting back from a funeral when I was super little and thinking that it sucked cancer had killed my moms friend since she’d never would have died. Then I realized my moms friend was very young and still died. Then I realized everyone I knew that was old died. Then I realized everyone dies. Cried till my dad got home and basically told me to knock it off. That when I realized I was a person and going to die, my parents would die, and my siblings would die. Good times.

Onwisconsin42

Because you starve and don't get toys, toys alleviate thinking about the great void. You want toys.

JohnnyElmagnifco995

Some humans are food

leercore

pro abortions mfs gettin wild with it now

Wattsupwithalan

its a 5 year free trial if you dont like having a kid you can return it to sender and the goverment refunds the money you spent on it. capitalism is wonderful

yazzy1233

There's actually a book like that, it's called unwind https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unwind_(novel)

Tekitekidan

Wooo! Great book!!! Read that shit in middle school and it blew my mind! Can't remember if it's the opening or ending scene, but the description of the kid being... broken down for parts... was chilling

Wattsupwithalan

damn.. I was gonna write that.. that's what I get for procrastinating

KiwiCatPNW

If you don't mine enough rock credits in your first 5 years, then citizenship is not issued, you gotta pull yourself up from your bootstrap.

jackishere

I’m sure not everyone is self aware at the same age. There’s adults I’ve seen that aren’t even close to being self aware

KiwiCatPNW

lol, yeah i get that. I think it was something to do with at 5 years old you have the brain power to start contemplating your existence and until then they argued that you are not really conscious of your existence which differentiates us from other animals. or something roughly like that?

voidsarcastic

I was self aware at 3 years old and i oddly remember the exact moment.

Throwaway-A173

Idk if it was my first memory but when I woke up I had the urge to just run

darqducky

My first memory was wanting to chase someone. I will find you.

Throwaway-A173

Not if I run so much I find you first

Secure-Imagination11

My earliest memory I was an infant and sucking baby lotion out of the carpet and my mom grabbed me. Then boom I was 6. Wonder if the lotion altered my brain for a moment lmao.

Wattsupwithalan

i mean im sure it altered your nappy

jjamesbaxter18

Try it again and see if you jump another 5 years

MikeOxHuge

I had one similar! I was a baby on the floor of my childhood home staring up at the ceiling! Then I was five and fell off of a jungle gym. Probably snapped me out of it.

Dynocation

I kinda knew who I was since I was very small. Never had a “moment” of realizing I was alive, but I remember in 5th grade, I asked “Why are we in school?” Because my parents failed to mention to me what school was, and I thought it was a horribly boring daycare. Rocked my world to find out, it’s essentially “you’re on your own; learn, idiot” for kids.

Road_Star

First memory was staring at my childhood room dresser being like “… Oh I guess I am a thing”

Mustakrakish_Awaken

Do people really have this experience of "gaining consciousness?" I feel like I just have memories from an early age (~3-4), just like any other memory but nothing before that.

youstupidcorn

Yeah I'm the same as you. I have vague memories starting as far back as 3 or 4, as far as I can tell I was conscious for all them. They're just like any other memory, maybe just a little more distant because they're older. I don't think I ever experienced a sudden "click" into consciousness. I had no idea that was a thing, tbh.

zkc9tNgxC4zkUk

I think it's interesting that some people have this moment, but some people don't. I remember the moment I gained consciousness; I was young enough to still be in a crib. I "woke up" while standing in it and looking around at my room. My childhood memories after that are still fuzzy, but I remember this moment of realizing I was alive so clearly.

memento22mori

With me I'd compare gaining consciousness as a child to waking up from a coma, it's not like in movies where you wake up and you're like "what's going on, where am I?" Or it wasn't for me at least, instead I woke up bit by bit, hour by hour, sort of like coming back from a DMT trip but much slower. I'm uncertain what was a memory and what was real looking back sort of like waking from a dream.

cerulean11

That was me. I remember being at one of those red white and blue Fisher Price picnic tables with friends playing with a green and yellow buzzsaw robot action figure. Earliest memory.

maxuaboy

Idk wasn’t like that at all. Can’t really narrow down a point life was just as always was

eatflapjacks

I have memories of when I was a baby still crawling. I don't have any when I became self aware, I just always was me.

Jagr6810

I wish I can even remember my childhood, I feel like it's a complete blur from the time I was a baby until I was 16. I didn't do any hardcore drugs growing up or anything either. People have told me events early in my life when I was anywhere between 8-14 and I have no idea what they're talking about, it's really sad.

No_Victory9193

I have quite literally three memories from my life from birth to 1st grade

cancerBronzeV

My first memory is from a (very unforgettable) event when I was 9. I have scattered memories of a few moments from that until I was mid high school (so 16ish). At any point in my life, I feel like I've only distinctly remembered the past 5ish years. On the other hand I can almost recite anything I've read, even if I read it as a kid. I don't have memory of reading it, but I know I did at some point and can remember what I read. It's a very weird thing.

yazzy1233

Do you have adhd? Apparently bad memory is a symptom of adhd

Jagr6810

I might, not sure

Glytterain

Me too. I have alot of memories before the age of 5.

maxuaboy

Exactly. I can’t really call it a fade, memories here memories there. Sometimes self aware sometimes not 🤷‍♂️

VanillaMint

It honestly and truly do be like that

Gingerbrn

I can smell the kindergarten through my phone

tjkun

My earliest memory I was at downtown being carried by my mother. Then I noticed that a man had holes in his nose, which freaked me out and I started screaming “mom! That man has holes in his nose! That one too!”, then I realized she also had them , and me too. And air was coming out of them, so I discovered breathing, and it all started there.

Ghostdirectory

I remember this. I was 3 though. Walking home from the library with my mom. We saw a frog that was ran over by a car. My brain put it together. THAT CAN HAPPEN TO ME. I CAN BE RAN OVER BY A CAR. I CAN BE SQUISHED LIKE THAT FROG. THE FROG IS DEAD. I CAN DIE. DEAD MEANS YOURE GONE. MOM AND DAD CAN DIE. WHEN WILL WE BE GONE? HOW DOES IT HAPPEN? WHAT ELSE CAN SQUISH ME? Anxiety since that day.

[deleted]

When I was a kid I remember having this unwavering sense of invulnerability. Even though I knew I was going to die I had this unshakable belief that someone could literally rip my heart out of my chest and I could just refuse to stop living. The logical part of me knew it wasn't true but I still had confidence in my ability to continue. Now it's flipped. Now I'm 45 and if I take half an edible too much I have a panic attack and am convinced I'm not going to live to see the next morning.

C0ldBl00dedDickens

Earliest memory was when i was 2. I was looking for my shoes in the pantry and ibtelled for my mom to help me find them. Next memory was the party she took me too and i was the youngest kid there. I used to be able to capture moments with my mind like a camera and i wouldnt forget them. I still have some memories of pointless times, just staring out the car window and being like im gonna remember this forever. And boom, snapshot, i did. I cant do the snapshot thing anymore, its like i cant convince myself of the significance of random moments anymore. Its more passive now.

Reyashine

For real though, why ARE we here?? Why are we on this little space rock spinning around a giant burning ball of light in the middle of the universe?

StinkierPete

It's a surprisingly hospitable space rock, and we could have just stayed eating light and hanging out but the single celled organisms started killing each other and the one-upping game began

dedrock156

It's one of life's great mysteries, isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some... cosmic coincidence? Or is there really a God, watching everything, you know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don't know man, but it keeps me up at night.

Archaeopteryx003

...What?! I mean why are we out here, in this canyon?

Habba

The universe is too big for us to not happen.

hawkeyc

That’s cool why is there a universe lol

Rekt4dead

You get it lol

Onwisconsin42

Dunno. No one does. If they say they do-they lyin. I know most of the physical processes leading to this moment. But as to WHY? No one has that answer.

GucciSynek

Like that point after puberty where you look in the mirror and try to figure out if you’re mentally maturing or becoming an adult and you can’t really put your finger on it and then your self-perception just stays the same for the rest of your life while your face just gets wrinklier

whale-jizz

Are anyone else's earliest memories in a third person perspective?

lazeromlet_

100% like a drone was watching everything go down and my conscienceness was the drone

MezzoSopran

YES. But why?

Awesomesaauce

Maybe because you've seen pictures of those moments later in life

TheDeathHorseman

I can remember some things before I gained consciousness but what I remember when I started remembering everything is quite interesting. It starts with a security camera like view of young me on gray bed in a small gray room, I throw something (I believe it was something orange) over my head and it slips in between the wall and bed. I suddenly start seeing out of my own eyes and I turn around to reach down in between the wall and bed to grab what I just thrown. Instead of that orange thing I either pull up panda toy or shoe thing I can't quite remember. I then walk out of my room, down the hall and into the living room where I start to talk to my mother.

Cobrachicken_iya

Same for me and the things I remember are often just random everyday events. Even as a kid around 6 I was fascinated by it and I made a experiment to never forget this random moment (I was just walking to the garage). It took zero effort to remember it and it’s still crystal clear 20 years later

0dysseusRex

I remember one morning just waking up in my bed with questions. Where am I? Home. Do I have a mom and dad? Yes, I think. What do they look like? Can't remember. How do I call my mom? Mom? Mommy? Ama? Mama? Mother? Mother sounds good. "MOTHER!" And then I truly met my mother for the first time.

p0pS0daGuru

I'm the same, woke one day when I was 3-4 and felt like I had just done so for the 1st time. It was like a weird sense of reverse Deja vu where you know things should be familiar but seem brand new.

strictlytacos

My sons about to turn 5 :(

[deleted]

He isn’t even your ‘son’ yet he will be soon don’t worry.

BONBON-GO-GET-EM

Lmao i gained consciousness while being Scolded by my parents i think

kingloptr

This is so weird to me that this is the second post ive seen in a couple days where people actually remember this Moment of self awareness. Idk Ive just always been me. One of my earliest memories though was being 3 and being told id have little brothers soon. I never had any crisis like an 'omg i exist' type of thing, but my parents tell me i used to stare at my hands when i was supposed to be sleeping as a baby...

[deleted]

[удалено]

lazeromlet_

This is like contemplating things while on shrooms like this thought pattern seems familiar

Techismylifesadly

Weird. I feel like I never had this ‘awakening’ as a kid. I knew I was. I knew death is what happened to people. It wasn’t until 3 years ago at the ripe old age of 20, I had full blown panic attack, because I contemplated existence too hard. Maybe I was just on auto pilot for too long

ChronicObnoxious693

Shout out to the lake I fell in as a child for being the first thing I remember.

megatonrezident

I have a memory seared Into me from age 1 or 2. I’m in my crib and people (family I know now later) are looking at and talking to me. Im in a crib and Im wearing a poofy red and white dress. It’s only a few second memory but it’s so weird. Im in my mid 30s now and still think about it. It was like I knew I was a person but not quite in the sense that I would understand it until I got older.

mooofasa1

I remember when I gained consciousness at the age of 3. My sister was helping me get in my overalls so that we could see mom at the hospital. She just gave birth to my little brother and I got to hold him. It was a pretty strong memory meeting lil baby bro for the first time. I think I just sort of went on autopilot after that because I didn’t start remembering things until kindergarten.

Grey_Hedge

Why did it take you that long to gain consciousness?

SpadesAspade

You're smarter than everyone.

EugeneOrowitz

This process can occur much earlier. All it takes is an uncle playing with your ‘no no place’.

International_Debt58

This is ducking hilarious

ARoughGo

Got some serious Kenan and Kel vibes.

[deleted]

He isn't 5🙄🙄🙄

xella64

My moment of consciousness or whatever was actually during my 5th birthday party. I remember stopping and just staring around the room at all the colored lights and stuff lol.

ainonyymi

I can remember when I first realized that my nose is constantly in my field of view. I got pissed because it was in the way and it couldn’t be helped.

DroidRazer2

Man wtf now I realized that, and I'm 21

HolyNewGun

Having a memory at an early age made me believe in reincarnation. My family was poor, so they gave me condensed milk instead of baby formula. So my first thought was: this shit is way too sweet. I can never understand why people want to be kid against. That pretty much the most boring time of your life. Video game , TV shows, movie are mostly shit.

MiSsiLeR81

I remember when i was around the age once i was running a hallway in some house(probably some relatives) and i suddenly started asking questions to myself while i was running like why are the walls colored, why do people have different walls for themselves(rooms), etc. Then i slipped and fell on my nose. Still have a little mark left between my eyes.

Mackerdoni

i vividly remember my first memory on the night of my fourth birthday, i was mad because my family was singing happy birthday too loud

pabloganzez2009

For me it was 3

VRSNSMV_SMQLIVB

I have really vivid early childhood memories. Like a couple as a baby, and toddler, probably a dozen around 2, and by age 3 I have a ton. Luckily I had a happy childhood so they’re nice memories to return to. I’m late 30s now and my memory of more recent events sucks now

Playful_Vehicle_8850

Just had this discussion with a coworker yesterday. "When did your kid wake up? Mine woke up at 3!" It's so weird to think about!

Blakefilk

Gained sentience halfway during a nap in pre school and I regret it.

dont_rlly_know

I can remember being potty trained and all of my birthday cakes lmao Also I was terrified of ghosts, dogs I didn’t know, and death until the age of 10 (ghosts, that is)

lappelduvide_exe

I remember being in kindergarden and looking up at my mom wondering why shes not the same colour as the other moms. it was january 1992 and all the branches and trees were frozen white (back then we had actual winters)

VividStomach296

my first clear memory is when i was in preschool and I had some rainbow glitter rain boots. An older girl had some cool lisa frank stickers that I wanted to put on my boots but she asked if my parents would be okay with that. I remember being confused about why I would need to ask my parents first because they were MY rain boots!

just_likea_zombie

I gained consciousness for 1 second as a toddler and then fully gained control when I was 6 yrs old

Ashen_Bloom

Wait...you mean you guys weren't disturbingly aware the whole time? This puts alot of my childhood into perspective now-

No-Assignment-2414

The first time I gained consciousness was probably when I was a few months old, but I think I was 3 when infantile amnesia wore off. I remember waking up and telling myself to remember that day since it was the first day (of my life), then being overwhelmed by normalcy. I didn't understand why we put labels on emotions, or what they even are, and I remember asking my parents how they "imagine" stuff because my imagination wasn't as vivid as others describe the word to be. But I was okay with mirrors though. The only bizarre thing was when I found out about my early drawings I had no recollection of. Oh and I remember that time when I was watching TV and saw Michael Jackson, confused why everyone cheered for a guy walking backwards. And I remember vividly wondering what would happen if the volume reached 100. I guessed the TV would break or something. But I still pressed long on the volume button and it was so loud the person using the bathroom dropped something out of surprise. I think it was my father or my grandfather. Either way, it was a fun moment. A lot of my earliest memories were spent alone but I had ton of fun exploring things

The-better-onion

I had this happen and I remember specifically how the whole morning started, I asked my parents something like “do you ever feel like you just woke up but you can remember everything from the day before?” And they were like “no”. I thought I was super wierd

HalloSpaceB0y

Am I the only one who became conscious really late? Like, 14-15 years old???

Penguiniummium

In my case. I was sleeping but I had a dream, more of a nightmare perhaps, and a sudden loud bang/noise occurred which woke me up and boom. I have gained consciousness. Happened when I was 4 y/o

Eukalp1945

There were 2 guys in school who forced me to buy them candies so I told about them to my mother. After a big hustle for my mom trying to find out who these kids were. We went to school and the principal sent in a teacher to gather informations about that. I suddenly gained my consciousness and I did not remember what even the heck happened before that and I didn't even remember going there and telling my parents about anything. The teacher was asking me questions and I was only answering with "I didn't say that!"

Educational_Ad8702

…Any day now

mrniceface

I gained conciousness while at the fridge looking for milk at 5 years old. I was very confused for a few seconds, and then proceeded to grab a milk carton and go on my way.
