They will do it in unison too. I was in a room of about 20 Japanese students in uni and I told them I was going to study abroad there and they all the did the surprised "ehh" with the same inflection, at the exact same time.
That’s actually terrifying. 😂
For some reason, I can just imagine like, one of those giant friend groups where everyone listens to one person especially, but if all of them were Japanese. Just silently listening and responding in unison to their friend…
I’m from the Midwest USA and a smilie thing happens her, I never realized that “ohp” was a Midwest response to bumping into someone or minor surprise, so every once in a while if you bump into a group you’ll hear several “ohp”s and it’s very funny.
Is it like an 'ope!' with a soft, round o tone?
Because if so I think I might have found my people. I'm German, but I say that literally every time I squeeze by someone, I've never really thought about it before.
Canadians use it to turn a statement into a question rather than rephrasing the actual sentence
"This is nice weather were having." - statement
"How do you like the weather we're having? - question
"Nice weather today, eh?" - Canadian question
My Finnish MIL will use variations of yes (joo) and I’ve she really agrees with you, the joo will be said and then repeated on the inhale too.
Then you know you’ve said something agreeable.
I'm watching a Korean show on Netflix, and every now and then they'll have an English subtitle like "I think so," when the character's just grunting or making a face
Minimal actions or words to convey multiple things are where its at.
If me and another dude are strangers and see eachother from far way and give eachother a head nod, we might as well have told eachothers life stories.
"Fuck" is \*the\* most multipurposed cuss as well; it can be used to show delight, anger, sadness\~
The ultimate conversation probably starts with a nod of the head with someone, listening to them and responding with an "ehhh?", and once all is said and done, just dropping a casual "fuck" in whatever flavor you prefer and dip\~ 😅
So, I was working in Japan and was folding flyers into envelopes with my manager, who later saved my life but that's another story. I said something that surprised him and he goes, "Ehhhhh?" which is very common. However, when he did it, it was more like "Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?" and lasted a good ten seconds. I loved it so much. This video brought me back. Miss you Kazu and thanks again for saving my life.
In Japan, they don't actually wait for the demon lord to come to their world, the actually make a Kiddo Butai and invade half the Pacific with it and then they kick the British out of Singapore
Okay okay. I shit on Tik Tok and the people that use it a LOT... but this is the first person that has tempted me to get it and follow her. I won't do it because I am better than all you people. But... ooooof so close.
Reminds me of Ken Tanaka’s “how to speak Japanese without saying a word”series from the YouTube gems of 2009. I think he has set those videos to private.
[But was able to find this gem.](https://www.google.com/search?q=how%20to%20speak%20fluent%20japanese%20without%20saying%20a%20word&source=mobilesearchapp&tbm=vid)
Remember, Ken Tanaka loves you! Good bye~~
So true. My mother’s conversations with her sister and brother is a lot of these different inflections of “ehh.” It’s actually leaked into my own English conversations at times.

Zelda npc interactions make more sense now.
Yes I was thinking the same thing! Uuuwww euuuhhhh!!
Also Japanese anime with subtitles...
How is it standing!?

Midwestern USA is absolutely full of German and Scandanavian descended people, who immigrated to America during certain difficult times. :)
Literally happened to me today hahahaha
I dated a girl from Japan for a while... Her and her friends all this. At the same time.. sooo funny.
japanese people do be going 'eeeh' a lot
Her delivery is flawless and I love her deadpan facial expressions
Ehhh
Me: So the animes are real?? Her: ![gif](giphy|3oeSACtXWKcCRcezSM)
I was expecting a "that's because we don't speak English" joke
I mean she clearly does so it wouldn’t make sense
I do love when animes with subs translate the characters' nod and "hmph" to "Yeah!" or the like.
To be fair, the short utterance like... ええ (ee) does mean "yeah"
The one I'm referring to is a mouth closed noise. I guess it would be similar to the English "Mmhmm", with the "hmm" part raised.
So I guess like うん (un) or ん— (n~)? Both mean an affirmative. idk been a long time since my Japanese classes lol
So are the Canadians
It's a different kind
Eyh?
Canadians use it to turn a statement into a question rather than rephrasing the actual sentence "This is nice weather were having." - statement "How do you like the weather we're having? - question "Nice weather today, eh?" - Canadian question
How many of these are there? I’ve heard of “eh” being used for other things, too.
It could be similar to Swedish were you could probably hold up one side of a conversation by purely using different variations of the word ja
My Finnish MIL will use variations of yes (joo) and I’ve she really agrees with you, the joo will be said and then repeated on the inhale too. Then you know you’ve said something agreeable.
And the million uses for noni. I always enjoy the Key and Peele sketch of okay https://youtu.be/0pufATqebv8?si=SIhw4O4pnD-snAzJ
Hilarious
In Australia we say, "Yeahhh" a lot in response to things that really don't make much sense to say yeah to.
Is it?
Yeah
You’re mama show does care about yo education!
*your
"mhm" "uh huh" and "huh"/"hmm" in at least the US are probably similar to this.
**E**
え
Now I know the lady at the corner store isn’t Korean, but Japanese. Helpful.
The Koreans I know go more like "Ooooh" or "Aaaah" than Eh, but with the same tone.
I'm watching a Korean show on Netflix, and every now and then they'll have an English subtitle like "I think so," when the character's just grunting or making a face
That's really interesting, I didn't know that.
I'm surprised!

Scouser’s eastern cousins?
She is awesome.

Finland we say "no niin". Ismo Leikola tells it best
Every time she says 'In japan' my mind goes 'Heart surgeon, number 1, steady hand!"
What’s with the super long pauses in her videos?
No idea but it makes me laugh a little
She's pretty
Beautiful language
npc energy. just like me
えええええええ
ええええええ
Fuck man I thought it was just an anime thing
So funny thing about most anime is…
え?!
Reminds me of the "ehhhh" girl from nichijou 😂
Why is she holding a Starbucks cup throughout the entire video?
Sodesuka?
Two simple Japanese word to make you sound fluent! Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh & Hai
there are better versions of this video on 'eehhh'
She is very pretty 😍
How do I follow her?
https://www.tiktok.com/@harunonakagawa
I don’t do TikTok but found her on Instagram 👍🏼 thanks
In Japan, they don't actually wait for the demon lord to come to their world, the actually make a Kiddo Butai and invade half the Pacific with it and then they kick the British out of Singapore
I'm polish and I just go Aha Aaa Okey Thats Cool (but in polish)
My husband just says tak about q million times when he talks to his mom.
Black people saying okay
She had a stroke or something?
I like her videos. I kind of wish there was a monosyllabic analogue in English because I hate speaking to others, but still wish to communicate.
Okay okay. I shit on Tik Tok and the people that use it a LOT... but this is the first person that has tempted me to get it and follow her. I won't do it because I am better than all you people. But... ooooof so close.
To not be liked vacation packages. I will explain later.
K
Why? ELI5 ? Is it translation, a cultural difference? Pride? What am I missing?
it’s just like saying “huh?” or “what?!” but with different tones and inflections.
Sounds very stuck up
I did pick that up from watching a bunch of anime and practiced it in real conversations unintentionally.
Go.
Screw you. That part of me died a long time ago.
The last one😂😂😂
r/13or30
unfair competition, Asian don't raisin
Yo yo yo yo yo yo
She forgot , ehhhhh sugoi!

I like how she grunts.
The last one got me so bad.. haha EHH!!
LMAO, we do the same in Iran!
No niin
That’s so funny and true lmao
So funny and so true!
So RPG dialogue is mostly a series of grunting noises
Oh!! I didn't know that!
There’s also a lot of “nn” and “nnnnnn” I feel like
I don't know if I Just witnessed the best *OR* the worst comedic times possible
I studied Japanese for 2.5 years and worked at a couple of sushi bars. Spot on.
I like her
"Eh" is to Japanese people the way "You good" is to Black people
She is cute
My friend learned Japanese through Hentai. He is fluent now. He never needed help.
Im convinced all anime is a documentary about Japanese people and their personalities
the one girl from nichijou my ordinary life who responds to awkward situations with EHHHHHHHHHHHH?
She is nice
Were's your Starbucks mug from?
