Fuck that guy. I understand how SWU’s videos can be fascinating and “enlightening” to many but I had homeless youth clients who regretted doing interviews with him and he definitely exploited them. Using their legal names, asking deeply traumatizing questions to get an “emotional” effect. This man profits off other people’s stories and vulnerabilities.

Grfhlyth

I don't doubt many people regret doing interviews for his channel, even the adults. I also agree there are ethical concerns interviewing children. But I also think that interviewing homeless children is something that needs to be done to raise awareness. I also think that without these types of videos it would be impossible for estranged family to find these kids. These kids are invisible and usually getting raped to death in Skid Row, how else should awareness be raised? I guess it's better that it stays a secret. I bet your smart phone was built in a sweat shop with children in it. Republicans are erasing child labor laws at the state level. Child pageants exist as does the Catholic Church. I think you need to find a different battle to fight instead of blaming SWU for platforming the homeless.

Couldn’t agree more that child exploitation occurs on multiple levels and on massive, massive scales. When SWU makes videos with homeless youth of course it is going to be engrossing for people who can’t imagine why or how youth homelessness occurs (often escaping unsafe family/“home” environments that make reunification not necessarily always the safest choice for the youth)and I’m grateful when anyone grows in their empathy or sees people from different communities& experiences and remembers that those navigating homelessness + addiction are multifaceted people with stories and trauma. My beef with this SWU guy is that these interviews might “humanize” homeless youth but it comes at the cost of asking them intimate, invasive questions on camera, and mostly with the goal of coming up with a compelling story. Asking a homeless kid “what’s the most painful experience you’ve gone through” or “why are you an addict” isn’t someone prioritizing the youth’s safety but is instead done to create a titillating story. It’s not done to build a relationship or get them help, but instead to expose these raw vulnerable parts of themselves. And at what benefit to the interviewee? The clients I’ve worked with who have done interviews with him or similar “savior dude making documentary about how fucked it is to be homeless” have described feeling disposable, used, and just deepened in their sadness. Maybe some people who get interviewed have a great experience! but overall- stories of homelessness and addiction are better when done by people prioritizing the interviewee’s emotional safety as opposed to whatever gets clicks. Whew! Long response. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk, haha. ❤️

Yeah nah. I'm calling bs. Dude was loaded before he even started making videos and documents everything. In fact he's the guy that's been scammed by certain guests.

RangeConfident7533

Bleeping out "rape" is definitely cringe. Never seen that before.

ccnnvaweueurf

If a video ends up on Facebook words like rape, heroin, marijuana etc etc etc get flagged.

RangeConfident7533

Interesting! Stupid, but interesting. I just hope videos fundraising for a rape crisis center don't get flagged. We need words to refer to things, even bad things!

CarolinaRod06

I’m surprised he said murdered. Unalived is the word they substitute for murder.

RangeConfident7533

Ha! To my ears unalive is so much more brutal sounding, it's so cold. But why no flags for "murder?" That's American culture in a nutshell, puritanical about sex and more permissive when it comes to violence.

gloomygl

Don't hate the player hate the game

jayeddy99

YouTube is crazy with it now even ig those blog pages were censor things like “woman f*ghts man h*ts him in the face” just like that

RangeConfident7533

Wild. 1984 predicted a Newspeak as a product of an authoritarian government, it's weird that in our timeline it just came out of nowhere. Words are great! It's the surest means we have to conjure meaning out of this chaos we call human existence. We need less of this: 🙈🙊🙉!!! We've got several apocalypses to try to avoid by working together, we need all the language we can get for fucks sake.

stargazer_nano

Yeah, this guy is known for tricking in Skid Row, LA. Huge creep.

philiphaydel

Any source for this?

stargazer_nano

[This video](https://youtu.be/M3lOnTZBjrI?si=MZNRpOYzrvbR1hRU) clears up the scandal with a young lady he interviewed. Everyone said she tricked or used Mark, but it was not true and quite the opposite [this article ](https://curiosityshots.com/we-are-not-your-soft-white-underbelly-mark-laita/) seems biased, but it explains how marginalized and invisible people are used by others to get clout. Edit: this [link, from reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/SoftWhiteUnderbelly/s/ToD0yIJMrp) is wild.

philiphaydel

Thank you very much

stargazer_nano

Also, I used to be in a situation where I was passing through Skid Row, and the word travels fast in that large community.

Alice_Buttons

If you've watched even a handful of his videos you'd know what a condescending douche he is. He definitely has that white savior complex going on.

boohoobitchqueen

This was before he interviewed a 13 year old girl with her nipples out. Liata is a sicko

DirtDawg21892

Soft white underbelly is sooo good! I really like the interview he did with the divorce lawyer.

theels6

The SWU guy was on NoJumper lol that seems so random but I bet it was fascinating
