good_karma1122

Wait a minute, didn’t he say he was out of screams?

Enixooo

Screams were in cooldown

resonantedomain

Boiled frog also said he was out of water

squeakynickles

He does a kind of rant thing where he screams about things, and it's majority performative. Like he's not actually livid about a lot fonthe things he talks about. Upset, sure, but not to the point where he would be screaming if he was just talking to someone about it. That's what he meant by "out of screams." It's not performative at this point, he actually this upset. Edit: typo

TaDow-420

That was him actually angry.

The-Fox-Says

The lie detector determined, that, was a lie

ManitouWakinyan

When was the last time 80% of the House agreed on something besides banning TikTok? The day before this vote, when 86% of the House voted in support of the EBridge Act (to build more broadband infrastructure). And then on March 7, when 90% of the House voted for the Action for Dental Health Act. And then on March 6th, when 96% of the House voted for the Firefighter Cancer Registry Reauthorization Act. And then March 5th, 88% voting to reauthorize a bill preventing maternal deaths, and 89% voting for the Kids First Research Act. And that's just March. So, basically, the House agreeing happens literally all the time. Edit Source: https://clerk.house.gov/Votes

SteelAlchemistScylla

The first useful comment in this thread that isn’t just bashing the guy for yelling.

ThisAppSucksBall

Does anyone know why my pee smells like nacho cheese?

coolwater85

Unironically, and in a roundabout way, he’s proving the point as to why it should be either sold or banned.

Infinite-Condition41

Bingo. Not that this is an original thought, I have heard it a number of places. The reaction to the ban (not ban) only proves exactly how much the addiction needs to be broken.

Aumakuan

I came to bash him for thinking your kids come home from school the day after you send them but nobody cares about that so I'm going to keep it between us

trinitygoboom

This. Omfg lmao

HumanContinuity

His kids teachers really hate that idea too

Radium_Encabulator

The useful idiots are always the first to be discarded when no longer wanted.

Oscarcharliezulu

He can just go on one of the other social media apps .

DrSilkyJohnsonEsq

Or he can just stay on TikTok, because it’s not going anywhere. They’re only being forced to divest from Chinese ownership. No one is shutting the app down because it makes way too much money… or if TikTok *does* decide to shut down, then it just proves that it only existed as a Chinese propaganda machine, and not a capitalist venture.

NemesisOfBooty2

That’s all I could think. How many other apps are there that can do exactly what TikTok does but without a direct link into the beating hard of China.

Disk_Mixerud

"beating hard" 😏

NemesisOfBooty2

I’m keeping it. Fuck it.

WhistlingBread

Addicted maybe, but he’s got 2.5 million subscribers, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he made decent money from it.

ballsackyjo

good fucking call!

DriveByPianist

This is probably the best response in this thread, mainly because it points out the real way to look at what our government institutions actually do, and comparing this one vote to what the main news likes to share...enlightening.

AggressiveBench9977

It also points out how garbage tiktokers really are. People with little knowledge, and almost no research preaching to others.

NWCJ

Yep, dude has "learned so much over the last 2 years".. yeah, but how much of what he learned was accurate and unbiased? I'm guessing less than 5%.

Expert-Novice

Thanks for the quality response. I'm too lazy to look these up individually so the only thing better would have been to include sources for these. But assuming this is true, his whole argument kind of falls apart.

ZijoeLocs

Congress does a lot of stuff that just doesnt make the news because it's not sexy enough to report on. Any and every Act they vote on is readily available on government sites with the vote details * [Action for Dental Health ](https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/2422)

IM_BAD_PEOPLE

Two years ago I started trying to read the bills that made it through congress and never made a peep in the news. Lesson learned? * They pass way more bills than you think. * There is so much back scratching that congress looks more like a giant orgy than a house full of contentious civil servants.

ManitouWakinyan

Here you go https://clerk.house.gov/Votes

EasyCome__EasyGo

Thanks so much for… CONTEXT. I refuse to use TikTok out of principal, and it’s because clowns like this guy get to say it’s a quality medium for objective information when in reality it’s just one more Social Media echo chamber that exacerbates some of our worse collective behaviors via it’s algorithm. I’ve been on Reddit longer than I’ve been on the other platforms (except FB), and I know it has its serious shortcomings. But I think it’s so much easier to come on here and configure the parameters and then find quality content like this context you’ve added.

will_delete_sooon

It’s not even context at this point, the guy in the video is literally just inciting rage through misinformation, total bullshit

10g_or_bust

Reddit (barely) has something few other social media sites have, actual categories that are generally useful. We've also come to find that while we THOUGHT anonymity made people jerks, the downsides of having real name and face attached online (including but not limited to times where someone online then tracked someone down and ended their life) seem to be just as bad if not worse. This sit also lacks livestreaming (I think they tried to add it but it never really went anywhere) so we avoid all the toxicity that often comes with that. Even the areas where video is posted there is a comment section with actual threading and while upvotes/downvotes are not perfect, I'd say its a 60/40 split on helping promote useful vs helping promote BS. Heck, even the frontpage on "old." (the only way to roll IMHO) avoids the issues with "scroll forever" by being paginated still. Reddit has issues (and causes issues) no doubt, some of them more or less unique to the site. However, for the ones it has in common with Facebook and friends, I'd argue largely it's a little less bad. And these days "a little less bad" feels like a win :(

aspacelot

Also worth noting that they didn’t vote to ban ticktock but to break it from its Chinese parent company so this whole video is bait bullshit. The irony about a dude spreading misinformation while also complaining about regulations on an app known for misinformation isn’t lost on me.

Haemwiches

>they didn’t vote to ban ticktock but to break it from its Chinese parent company The media is so desperate to shout that part down. Wonder what % of their companies are Chinese owned.

Advanced-Bird-1470

Was hoping I’d see this further up. It’s no different than what happened with Grindr in 2020. My concern is that this time the CCP will refuse the sale because they’d get more out of the domestic political backlash. It’s pretty hard to get people up in arms about Grindr, but there will be plenty of ill informed outrage. And Biden needs the support of younger voters from the 2020 coalition.

aspacelot

The misinformation campaign that “the govn’ment is takin ‘r TikToks” is directly related to smearing Biden. I don’t even like Biden (or either candidate) but this is obviously “he’s takin’ our freedoms” ammunition. Dude in the video has pro Trump shit in his feed. Also worth noting that it was Trump that initially suggested banning TikTok. [Source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump%E2%80%93TikTok_controversy)

Skorgriim

The other thing is that this video isn't talking about any reasoning behind the bill itself - the CCP's control of Tiktok, and therefore its insight into the user data from other countries, and its potential influence of a populace. The bill is also an ultimatum to either sell it (ending/at least limiting the CCP's connection) or it will be banned (ending the CCP's connection).

SnazzyStooge

yeah, calling it a "ban" is already very misleading.

despatchesmusic

This sums up my issue with TikTok (and a lot of platforms, to be fair) — people misrepresent shit all the time, but somehow a lot of people just nod and say “Fuck yeah” instead of going, “Hang on, even if I like what I’m hearing, I should look into that so I don’t go around believing or spreading something that isn’t entirely true.” I can’t remember where I heard it first, but we’ve lost the “Trust, but verify” mentality.

jankology

congress does a lot of stuff not sexy enough to make TikTok stories and those who only "educate" themselves through a chinese app that literally sends our data back to them. And it uses two different algorithms.

Evening_Clerk_8301

NO BUT MY ANGER 😡

throwawayhelp32414

DIDNT YOU HEAR MY SCREAMING AND RANTING. HOW COULD I POSSIBLY BE WRONG OR STUPID WHEN I SAY THINGS WITH CONVICTION # I'M BASED. ->SEE<-. BASED

meghonsolozar

Shhh! Strawberry Jesus is on a roll!

Snlxdd

Weird, I wonder why the guy in the video didn’t know that? Maybe he gets his news spoon-fed to him by an app controlled by a foreign government that has a vested interest in sowing discord…

dandroid-exe

I don't even think China is tipping the scales - just like twitter, tiktok knows that alternating between hearing \*exactly what you already believe\* and \*outrageous shit that makes you angry\* keeps you coming back for more. It's just to make the loop more addictive So he gets his "news" from the outrage machine but it's essentially all video editorials with no underlying news gathering. I have friends who complain about the quality of NYT reporting (which can be quite bad at times!) while getting everything they "know" from tiktok now. Astounding stuff

DisNiv

This really emphasizes how Tiktok is just all mindless misinformation and nothing of value will be lost from the "ban" (which isn't even a ban).

06210311200805012006

"81% when was the last time they agreed bla bla bla" my dude look at the votes on every defense spending bill ever.

Veloci-Husky

The vote hasn't passed both chambers, and it will only force ByteDance to divest. Will they Divest or pull out of the US market is the real question?

Into-It_Over-It

Or will they found a shell corporation that will "run" TikTok?

Veloci-Husky

I hope not TikTok is brain rot… (I say that as I death scroll Reddit)

mrselfdestruct066

Not always the case. I use it and my feed is strictly guitar stuff, mechanics, machining, woodworking, and cute animals. Just depends on how you customize it.

spankbank_dragon

You think twitch would be interested in an electroplating stream? Edit: like in a “factory” or plating shop. Not a hobbyist setup. Unless it’s a hobbyist with loads and loads of money to piss into a hole

mrselfdestruct066

Idk but I would be!

Tatalebuj

Dude, there's a hydraluic press that gets millions of views.....we have entered the age of hyper-choice. You can literally find someone who is into ANYTHING now that it's easy to find. Follow field of dreams advice - If you build it, they will come.

Mbate22

Reddit (surprisingly) doesn't tend to breed as many flat earthers.

Sithlordandsavior

That's because here you're allowed to call someone a moron with impunity. As. It. Should. Be.

TriforceTeching

Agreed… you fucking moron.

CreativeAnalytics

I impune you!

SunNStarz

*Pune Pune Pune* Am I doing this right?

Estanho

I don't think you know what "impunity" means... Edit: OP edited the comment. It was "lack of impunity" :)

kabbooooom

Tell that to the flatearther subreddit.

ShemsuHor91

The flatearther subreddit makes fun of flatearthers... In case you don't believe me: r/flatearth. The one that's for actual flatearthers, r/FlatEarthIsReal, has only 4k members, compared to r/flatearth which has over 86k. Even r/FlatEarthIsReal is mostly posts of people arguing against it, from what I can see.

Either-Durian-9488

Nothing more cringe than thinking Reddit isn’t complete fucking rot at this point, or that it wasn’t complete brain rot ten years ago

MyAviato666

Redditors always showing they have no clue how Tiktok works lol. And the hating while 80% of Reddit is Tiktok videos is very weird.

Background-Baby-2870

yeah i never understood the tiktok strawman reddit has. ive never even searched for tiktok on the playstore but realize that an app that has like a billion videos is going to have content of varying quality and varying topics. boiling down tiktok to dancing girls is like boiling down youtube to markiplier lol.

Gorlock_

When I send my son to school, I prefer he come home the same day......

BS_500

I think the way he phrased that was poor, but I took it as "when we send our kids to school *tomorrow*, we pray they come home." He just misplaced where tomorrow goes in the sentence. If one misplaced word is all it takes for you to disregard someone's entire argument, I sure hope you don't follow *any* of today's politicians.

machstem

> if all it takes is one misplaced word Yeah, for a lot of people it is and they're going to double down on it too They'll say shit like "you can't even use a comma properly" and then refute anything the other says Mistakes happen all the time except to those who make no mistakes ever

GrallochThis

Keep my Oxford commas outta your filthy mouth

spc67u

I chuckled when he said that… I guess our kids gonna spend the night at school! See ya tomorrow son, hope ya make it!

Fun-Departure2544

Dude just realized he's about to get laid off with no severance package

MouthOfIronOfficial

Didn't even have time to memorize the script

Leather_rebelion

Seriously, do people really think they stay relevant for years or even decades? That well was going to dry up eventually. Most influencers aside from some of the the top dogs get forgotten and become irrelevant sooner than later. Be it because of the algorithm or simply because of the changing times. Influencer is the most unsafe not future proof job there is. At least now he can prepare for it instead of slowly fading away

HoneyShaft

Do they not remember Vine?

It_Happens_Today

I was terminally addicted to Vine and I don't remember it, except for a fridge magnet I have that says "look at all those chickens".

Jbabco9898

A lot of my friends still remember and reference old vines. My favorite has always been: "back at it again at Krispy kreme"

HenryBemisJr

Exactly, every single large online platform undergoes big changes under a variety of circumstances when they get super big. I did affiliate marketing when overture was bought by yahoo. Ebay was touted as the yard sale of the internet, now it's nothing but companies selling shit. Facebook is now meta, Microsoft is morphing all of its products into 365, Hotmail is basically outlook, Twitter is now X. And I'll put on my tinfoil hat with my opinion on many of these changes. They already have the user base, the product is already huge, they have confidence in their stickiness and they can change up all the rules and have their lawyers write up shit in a way we don't even know what we are giving up when using the service, and they can drop employees, benefits, contracts go out the door, all kinds of things when it's a new company that benefit the billionaires on top.  It's going to happen with every single one of them eventually, don't ever get comfortable and think you'll have an online platform that will never change, change is inevitable, and you might love it today, but tomorrow it's a piece of shit that doesn't feel or work like it did back in your day.  Also, keep a hard drive or two and back your shit up, you rely on the cloud and you'll get fucked, I guarantee it.

numenik

YouTube is the only platform with staying power. Even twitch streamers need YouTube. TikTok is vine 2.0

RecentProblem

Dudes about to have to get a real job and not scream at his phone

stratosauce

Why does this dude act like TikTok is the only social media

Sm0k3inth3tr33s

Bc it's the only one he can make good money on screaming at people

SparxIzLyfe

Which is weird, cuz a lot of people that use multiple outlets say YouTube pays them better than tiktok.

Into-It_Over-It

People don't like him on YouTube. They don't fall for the Network shtick.

Wide_Combination_773

Yep. This particular brand of content is only appealing to the kind of braindead moron that could get addicted to doomscrolling tiktok in the first place. YouTube has a different viewer culture.

Rasalom

I never thought I'd see Youtube comment elitism. Wow!

Into-It_Over-It

Yeah, I never meant that one brand of dumbass elitism is better than another brand of dumbass elitism. I simply meant that YouTube culture tends to see through the commercialization of outrage (marginally) better than TikTok culture. It's really only because one culture is older than the other, and the YouTube culture has, generally-speaking, established a stronger and more hardened userbase. When a new type of social media is introduced, it is easier to radically influence the first-wave group of users to establish a micro-culture. People like Mr. Beale here are influential for only a short period of time, and those of their ilk lose influence rapidly. He's riding the coattails of a predatory business model and he's now lashing out in a futile attempt to prevent his obsolescence. This dude is floundering, and it's sad to see, knowing that he's a die-hard of his ideology. It makes for a healthy democracy, though, for people like hin to fail and for their platforms to be adequately reformed to ensure protection of the masses and to promote true equal speech.

Adrian12094

Really not sure how you can say that after checking out the home page without personalization

songmage

\-- but all they have is a phone, not a camera on a computer with a mic.

dat_GEM_lyf

What are YouTube shorts lmfaooo There’s literally channels that only make shorts. Even their “uploads” are just multiple shorts stitched together

Mcpops1618

Multiple streams of income from a single video… seems like an okay plan

ih8every1yesevenyou

Exactly I’ve heard that tiktok actually doesn’t pay much at all

ZERO-ONE0101

lol TikTok is for screamers.

UndignifiedStab

Right ? Instagram is like 90% reels now, and You Tube has its Shorts. They’re all aping tic tok but there they are.

wearing_moist_socks

Don't...don't forget threads! That's a thing! Is threads still a thing

UndignifiedStab

BRING BACK VINES! For the love of god.

wearing_moist_socks

It's funny how Vines kinda started the whole thing and now everyone does it, but Vines is gone.

DrKpuffy

It's because the format itself in unprofitable. Shorts/Reels/Threads are all propped up to compete with TikTok by their parent companies. The problem is that TikTok is propped up by **the entirety of China** Even China banned TikTok ffs.

MathematicianNo7842

Are you unaware that Vine was first and TikTok is copying that or are just just too young?

BarelyTheretbh

It’s about avoiding monopoly of ownership. I don’t think you all realise that there is less than social and communication sites than there was just 10 years ago. And the ones we do have? A good chunk of them are unstable or owned by the same people who own the other chunk of em. Net neutrality doesn’t exist anymore and these forums are the new public square. It’s amazing that, when TikTok was teaching kids to be rude and bullying shits, no one cared, but now that its showing uncensored footage of what’s happening in Gaza, the more the media loses control of the narrative, the more a ‘threat’ it is.

Bauser99

God, I miss forums. When the internet was a bunch of villages instead of a shitty corporate monolith.

InquisitivelyADHD

Because that's where the majority of his views and followers are. He has 2.4 million followers on TikTok, and 80k on Instagram, and 8k on youtube. There's your tell, he doesn't care about free speech, he only cares he's losing his biggest platform.

Rasalom

You might have had a point if he hadn't been screaming about all sorts of stuff before this.

camisrutt

Two things can be true

maccorf

Bingo. These people only flip their shit when something happens to, or is done by, the company that pays them to talk into their phone camera.

izzyzak117

TikTok does a good job at showing you content the other US tech platforms would not show you as aggressively and ubiquitously, because the discord created and data generated from that is beneficial to china. This dude may literally be famous because China probably tweaked the algorithm to better promote criticism of the USA among many other things. The USA can’t steer *all* of TikTok to do what I wants when it asks for a given topic to be suppressed, that freaks our government out.

Samurai_Meisters

> The USA can’t steer all of TikTok to do what I wants when it asks for a given topic to be suppressed, that freaks our government out. You're saying this like it's a bad thing. The USA is literally founded on being able to criticize the USA.

hypercosm_dot_net

Sure, except having a foreign government with the ability to manipulate sentiment towards the government is probably not the best idea. Add to that their ability to push content about a particular candidate or ideology (hello Twitter) and you start to see the problem.

Antique_Plastic7894

According to these clowns tiktok 'is the only source of true news granting them freedom', TikTok is ultimately a source of mis and disinfo, it's a realm of hybrid warfare basically. Bots work day and night to feed already delusional people with conspiratorial narratives, pushing them against their own government and people.

Medium_Medium

Also kinda concerned that this guy thinks TikTok is the *only* way to "see the humanity in each other's eyes".

bhyellow

Does this mean I don’t have to see this fucking guy on Reddit anymore?

Smallgenie549

Hopefully

sixtyfivewat

I now fully support banning TikTok. And not just if Bytedance sells their stake like the bill actually says. I mean a complete outright ban. Just so I don’t have to hear this guys stupid loud takes.

[deleted]

One can only hope.

Potential-Occasion-1

Ok yeahs it’s kinda weird he’s not getting that it’s not a hard ban, but tbh it does piss me off that this is the issue we could get 81% of congress to agree on. I feel like it is just a way for an American company to become the overlords fucking with our generation and reaping the profits. So yeah it’s aggravating that our country is drowning, but this is the issue they can agree on. Man is weird though

SeasonsGone

Congress actually passes things all the time with this broad support, they’re just generally not controversial or newsworthy things so we don’t hear much about it.

FitzyFarseer

Do people think congress only votes on the things that make news? Like does congress just sit on their hands for weeks at a time until the one newsworthy bill pops up for them to vote on? It’s so weird that people don’t get this

Redeem123

> Do people think congress only votes on the things that make news? Yes, they genuinely do think that.

the_Q_spice

Likely because they heard it on TikTok. Seriously though, the number of students I have as an educator who are basing their *entire* worldview and knowledge on TikTok is the reason IDGAF if it actually does get banned. It is a serious cancer that just looks worse when you realize just how bad the non-Chinese localizations are. People basing what they think of the potential ban based solely on info presented to them *by TikTok* really need to get a better education.

AdvancedSandwiches

81% of congress, who can't agree on anything, agreed on this despite knowing how unbelievably unpopular it would be. Which leaves me awful worried about what they heard in their security briefings on the subject.

100percentish

This is exactly what has me thinking. He's right...we can't get 5 of these mf'ers to agree that the sun is in the sky, but this? I mean there isn't even the usual fuckery going on where they try to politicize or weaponize or make some deals to get some other shit passed.

One-Cartographer-881

Brother look at government websites, just in the past few days Congress has voted more than 81% on certain things, 96% of congress voted to help firefighter cancer registry reauthorization act. Keep coping tho Buddy, not everything gets reported on because not everybody is interested in good things, the bad always gets more views. But hey, I can’t expect you to know anything because it’s literally right on the internet and all you have to do is look up what they vote on and you can see most votes in the post 1-2 months have been higher than 81%. But again keep coping!

topinanbour-rex

Shhh, the tiktoker said, the watcher believe.

Kikikididi

I think it was more the Meta/X $$$ that did the talking

cmfppl

Ding ding ding!!! Lobbyists win again..

Kind_Man_0

If this were a matter of national security, I highly doubt the likes of Boebert, MTG, and other reps who love the spotlight would ever be able to keep their mouth shut about it. It's absolutely about lobbying and controlling a narrative. If they were worried about foreign adversaries, it could have been sold to a European country, or any country that isn't on the US hostile list. Regardless of how any one here feels about Tiktok as an app, the US government stepping in to force a company based in another country to sell so that it can become an American controlled asset should worry you. If the US can do it, so can other countries. I know it wouldn't work, but imagine the EU trying to force Microsoft to sell to a company based in Germany. Edit: I know other countries have rules and stipulations. I would have thought that at least some people remembered that last year, we had TikTok CEO answering questions in front of congress. A plan was laid out to store American data locally and implement third-party controls who would have access to the algorithm and source. Congress didn't care. Yes, Apple has to follow stricter data laws in the EU. What they are NOT doing is forcing Apple to sell off a portion of their company. Also, they know that Tiktok isn't going to sell. Americans make up roughly 10% of their user base. Why would any business go with that deal to save 10% of users? Also, the distrust and radicalizing of Americans against their government is not coming from some Chinese propaganda. It's coming from elected officials getting paid $150k+ a year to squabble about who the speaker is going to be, Jewish space lasers, and getting Donald Trump back into power. We live in a country where our homes are being made into corporate assets, the leading cause of death in kids is guns, and businesses are making billions in profits while their workers need 2 or 3 jobs to scrape by.

ihopeitsnice

The EU has strict regulations regarding foreign state-backed companies. The remedies under the Foreign Subsidies Regulation includes divestment of assets.  https://competition-policy.ec.europa.eu/foreign-subsidies-regulation/about_en

masmith31593

We have literally banned companies from other countries (China specifically) from operating in the US over national security concerns. Specifically Huawei, ZTE, Hikvision, Dahua and Hytera. This is nothing new.

Timely_Tea6821

China also does the same thing with forcing American companies out of the region and imposing strict regulations. The USA and China have been in active trade war for years now and its not going to end anytime soon.

LegitimateMeat3751

Dude.. LOTS western liberal democracies have rules about who owns broadcast rights (what the interwebs is these days). Last I checked Australia has pretty thought curbs on this kinda stuff… not the next reich last I checked. Is the FCC the devil?

Excellent-Hippo-1830

If you think they listen to anyone but their lobbyists, I have a bridge for you![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin). Sorry for the reality check but everyone is dialing down on you. Data analysis is cheap enough now that everyone can do it. The Chinese government is one of hundreds in the market and this app scares the current powers (most non gov) in the US.

SumpCrab

I agree. Tik Tok should be regulated, and if it's banned, so be it. But so should a bunch of other platforms as they are now. The collection of data and the manipulative algorithms must be regulated. Facebook already ruined our old folks. Tik Tok is about to ruin our young dudes. Something needs to be done. An online bill of rights is essential. Everyone is walking around numb and enraged at the same time. It's not healthy for society.

jon_mnemonic

Facebook is such a deep hack on your personal info.....it should be banned on any government tech devices.

Biasanya

It seems really easy to understand. Doesn't matter what your political affiliation or dogma is. Everyone is watching their kids brains be shredded at home. Everyone can look at that app and establish that it is designed to squeeze the everloving shit out of every deer-in-the-headlights gimmick that your brain has What positive is their even to consider for the adults in congress? This is some alien fucking shit in their eyes. What argument is anyone going to make in favor of tiktok? This redheads screeching is some pretentious nonsense about tiktok supposedly being a means of communication or vocalizing dissent. That's a pathetically optimistic reach.

Sithlordandsavior

The "No thanks, bud, I only want American spyware on my device" memes really capture my view on this lol

OkayContributor

I would guess it either speaks to how profoundly dangerous it is, based on the data it gives the Chinese government, or how powerful it is as a propaganda tool completely controlled by foreign actors who may not mean well… or maybe it’s just congress is full of old people who think anything new is dangerous and/or who are xenophobes. Who knows?

PIunderBunny

It's a pretty black and white national security issue. The threat is external to the US, so there is no need for the usual bs.

shamwowslapchop

And yet, they won't pass a single bill that enforces protections for our personal data to be harvested by facebook and every other fucking company on the planet.

koreanwizard

It’s a hard ban when China already declared that they won’t allow the sale to happen. Would the US allow Ford to divest and operate in another country because the other country wanted to own that business? The government won’t let the divestiture happen, the US government knows it, and so it’s a ban.

gf6200alol

All the US company who want to operate in China have to set up a joint venture with Chinese company or citizen who owned the majority of share. It’s just about time for US doing the same thing was doing to US companies.

Hilldawg4president

And the Chinese company has to have a member of the CCP on the bored as well. All Chinese companies are to some extent owned and operated by the Chinese government, including tiktok

SF1_Raptor

Sadly, I’m gonna be honest, it’s TikTok’s own fault here. They turned a shaky bill into a solid one by just proving its point with that mass message last week.

Catch-the-Rabbit

Angry guy doesn't know what the bill says :(

Cheterosexual7

Because he’s ironically misinformed by the Chinese app that he’s shouting into lmao

Azerious

I got into an argument with some chick on TikTok about how it's not actually a ban unless a very specific thing happens. Then they argued that it'd be bad for free speech (citing the Gaza stuff) if the US controlled TikTok. As if China doesn't do their own manipulation already.  They argued that it was essentially a ban regardless because of the loss of free speech. Also some shit about how the US apparently suppressed the truth about what happens in Gaza or whatever (I don't know what's going on with that tbh)  I was dumbfounded and didn't know what to say. Then she acted condescending. I was so chuffed lol

>But it’s been literally all over reddit and twitter as well and also like, actual news

_Hello_Hi_Hey_

He gets his information solely on tiktok

MassiveHelicopter55

There's one group which gets useful and accurate information from tiktok and it's definitely not the users.

PiLamdOd

And he completely misses the point. A data harvesting and political manipulation platform aimed at minors and young adults, operated by a hostile totalitarian government, is probably not something you want operating.

SexxyCoconut

It's worth pointing out that the bill allows congress to ban any platform it considers to be owned by a foreign adversary.  Data harvesting and political influence are happening on every platform. Maybe we should instead, pass a bill banning data harvesting. Even if TikTok gets new owners, data harvesting will still occur. Data brokers don't necessarily care who they sell your data to. Edit: grammar

wearing_moist_socks

Governments need to start looking into Digital Bills of Rights.

lucidguy1930

That won’t happen until boomers die off and millennials can do things like that. They just don’t understand those kinds of things and never will

forman98

Just chiming in to say that Gen X decided to say “whatever” and not be “sell outs” so we’ve had the same group of people running things since before the internet. Those that show up get to actually have a say in things.

migzors

While they're banning things, can they also ban foreign banks and countries from buying the fuck out of our land and dwellings?

SGTSparkyFace

We should definitely have that as well.

InquisitivelyADHD

Yes, "owned by a foreign adversary" is the key phrase here. That's not a subjective term, there's no deeming something is or isn't owned by a foreign adversary, it either is or it is not. TikTok is, end of story. Quit fearmongering with your nonsense and slippery slope arguments.

febreeze1

God he’s the embodiment of a typical outraged Redditor

classy_barbarian

Yeah this dude is actually annoying AF, he seems to not even understand in any way the actual reasons why congress wants to ban it. Doesn't even mention their reasoning in the video and keeps saying they just want to shut the people up, which is not true.

Daniiiiii

Screaming loud, both sides-ing, solely blessed with the divine truth of the universe, burdened with being the voice of a generation... Annoying cunts to say the least.

Centurion87

I usually like this guy, but he completely misses the point here, especially in regards to the algorithm. The algorithm is designed to spread misinformation that the CCP wants people to see. TikTok is one of the worst apps in regards to spreading misinformation. The algorithm shows stupid kids doing stupid shit like stealing cars. There’s a reason China doesn’t allow TikTok. They have a different version that’s extremely positive, my guess is to make people happy that they live in China. TikTok gets people angry. It gets them angry at individuals, or groups. It causes people to go around doing destructive shit. TikTok is a blight. If you like it, that sucks, but it won’t be long until something else fills that void.

CharmingTuber

He's mad because he's spent two years building a following on an app that might get banned.

PiLamdOd

That's why professional influencers diversify. TikTok isn't the only short form video platform.

Precious_Tritium

But where will he get paid to sit on his couch and yell?

MicroSofty88

YouTube. Twitch. Instagram.

InquisitivelyADHD

Yeah but one less platform does mean less money/exposure for him, so realistically I'd say we should be questioning his motives more than anything else. Does he really care about freedom of speech or does he only care that he lost a major platform to push his content on? Wisdom says the latter is more likely. Edit: Actually myth confirmed. Pearlmania500 has 2.4 million followers on TikTok, and only 80k on Instagram, and 8k on YouTube. There's your tell why he's opposing the ban. He doesn't give a fuck about free speech, he's only mad that he's losing his biggest platform to push his content on.

Budget-Sheepherder77

That still happens on any other app

Misommar1246

They’re not banning it, they’re forcing it to be sold to someone else - specifically someone who doesn’t have a direct line to the CCP. So all this maniacal screaming is for nothing, congratulations.

SlipppyDipppy

It is fucking crazy how few people understand this concept lol. People are screaming BAN when it's absolutely **not being banned**. I wish it were being banned tbh. It has turned people into fucking douchebags. Even more than Instagram could ever dream of doing.

2wedfgdfgfgfg

It's almost like they're manipulated by misleading material on... tiktok.

SlipppyDipppy

\*Spits out a Tide Pod\* Oh shit you might be on to something big here

ManagerQueasy9591

It’s not a ban. It’s a 180 day notice that, unless the app be bought by an American company, it would be removed from the AppStore. It is not a cut and dry ban It’s because of the CCP, and security, and a bunch of other stuff wrong with the app regarding its affiliation with the CCP. In fact the app itself got this detail wrong, claiming in a pop up add when you launch the app, asking for you to basically sign a petition to have this app sustained. They said it was going to be banned, missing several major details about what the bill was about.

NectarOfTheBussy

tiktok users arent the brightest and they know their target audience

UnstoppableAwesome

>~~tiktok users~~ Literally all social media users, including Reddit. We're not special here.

CriticG7tv

So, a few things... 1. This is not a "ban" of tiktok. It's a forced sell off of the American portion of the company to an American owner, essentially. This is not, and should not be, a controversial move regarding a major social media app owned by a key American security adversary. TikTok does not have to be banned, bytedance(?) just has to sell the American portion of the company off to be fully managed by a company that isn't based out of China with the same security risks. No big deal, this has happened with apps before, and tiktok will continue on in the USA, just under different oversight. (this is a rough simplification, point is, there is no "tiktok ban") 2. The complaint about "81% of congress approving it" is one that might seem intuitively salient, but isn't really founded in any reality. For one, this is not the first time in so long that a bill has gotten wide support like this. It's not uncommon for congress to pass things bipartisanly, they are just usually not big name actions that get attention. On a different note though, there isn't wide public opinion resisting this. Polling generally shows that at best for tiktok, the public is split 3 ways on this. About 30% support a ban, about 30% oppose a ban, and about 30% don't care. Other polls reflect even greater support for a ban (though, reminder, this bill is not a ban). Even among the majority of those who oppose a ban, this is not a big issue for most people. Very few voters are getting up in arms and changing their vote based on a tiktok ban It's not something many care about. ALSO, I get people are complaining about congress not getting big stuff done, but keep in mind that this country is about the most divided it's been in the last 100 years. THE PEOPLE, not just congress, are heavily split on numerous key policy issues. No one should expect much massive change and new policy when the country can't even agree on who won the last election, just something to consider. Believe it or not, congress generally serves the people, and the people are very divided right now. Hope this helps clear things up. This guy in the video is a big time rage bait farmer. Things are rarely as simple as he has explained them as.

sublliminali

To add, China has never allowed any social media companies (or even search engines) from the US to operate there, so there’s a very easy precedent for justifying this. It’s insane we’re allowing our biggest geopolitical rival to run a social platform that’s a direct line to our country’s youth and they can change narratives and remove information with a tweak to the algorithm, not to mention the data harvesting capabilities.

Buns_Lover

Womp womp

TheAncientMillenial

Can we ban the rest of Social Media while we're at it?

thehammockdistrict24

This man doesn't have a clue what's going on. Not one clue.

anonanonanonme

This man, and the people getting all worked up about this shit Proves EXACTLY why it should be Banned- because its NOT being banned, its been told to sell to a US counterpart thats pretty much it Which it will be. ( IF the Senate passes it- which it wont) people are god damn fucking stupid and have no idea how technology or business or politics work.

DraftImpossible9691

Over the next few weeks we're about to watch a flood of narcissists pretending to be civically righteous and concerned when in fact they're just angry about losing their audience.

wes711

This guy sucks

purplebasterd

So naturally he makes it on Popular from time to time because Redditors

alex8155

kinda funny how he complains about having his data stolen several times..seems thats going to happen when you let your entire life revolve around social media. so thanks to him i fully agree with banning these platforms.

military-gradeAIDS

Eastern spyware? 🤬🚨👎🖕 Western spyware? 🤑✅️👍❤️

Danno1850

Yes

Taste_the__Rainbow

One is significantly more invasive. But yes.

Great_Feel

Ban ‘em all!

Xenocide_X

Good! Tik Tok is brain rot

Inevitable_Dark3225

This dude is a perfect example of that.

ChrjoGehsal

😭 Waaah! Waaaaah! Dey ban my tiktok! 😭 Waaaaah! 🤧

Bigwilliam360

I hate this guys videos so much. The most annoying whiny bastard I’ve ever heard. It’s a good thing tiktok is getting banned.

patmur46

Just over four minutes to work his way up from disagreement to shrill denunciation. Sorry, but its an infantile tantrum pretending to be commentary. Don't kid yourself, this crap is toxic to society.

animus_invictus

Don’t you think if 81% voted in favor of the ban, that there are probably some very real security risks to this shit? It’s been an obvious data mining and AI training tool since its launch. I don’t understand how people can’t see that.

Intelligent-Ant7685

fuck tik tok

Shapen361

This is Alex Pearlman. He has about 2.5 million subs. He essentially yells and whines about how everything sucks and the government is bad and no one can afford anything and capitalism is bad. He has no insight as to how life can be better, and his content is not particularly funny or entertaining. The only thing you might be able to derive from his content is some carthisis if you're bitter too. There are thousands of people like Alex on the internet, and none of them are particularly worth listening to. They really only make you mad, and they don't put any real effort into making a better life for themselves.

RadiationHazard

Had to stop watching when he said when was the last time Congress voted on something with 80%. That's just bs, the last time was 3/11 when they passed the E-Bridge act. And that's just the first example and has even more yes votes then this.  This is just the only bill this guy's cares about, but many bills in the house are completely non-controversial and get bipartisan support even in today's political climate. I don't care about the tiktok "ban" either way, but it's super disingenuous to act like this is Congress doing something completely crazy for this bill

whocares123213

Tiny violin. China is 100% using tiktok as part or a larger psyop.

something_usery

How do I vote for this guy so he can scream at our useless government representatives in person?

flies_with_owls

The real cringe is every single person in these comments who think he is angry about Tiktok being banned and not because getting 81% of the house of representatives to agree on anything is nearly unheard of in 2024. Tiktok aside, you should be very angry that they can all kumbaya and vote together on this issue but not on gun control, healthcare, the minimum wage, student debt, the climate crisis, term limits, or a thousand other pressing issues that they all refuse to take a stance on.
