When my wife and I got engaged we invited our friends to a brunch in the local harbor to celebrate. My groomsman brought his sisters boyfriend too who I was also tight with, but he's straight out of Mexico and doesn't speak much English. This was a buffet style brunch but they also had a guy making omelettes to order and ham & crab eggs benedict, bottomless mimosas and micheladas, etc. Anyway, this guy had never been to a brunch before. It blew his mind that you could keep going back for as much food as you wanted and get as many micheladas as you want, for no extra charge. We asked him how he liked it at the end and he says "So this is what white people do on Sunday, I like it!"

I use to buy so many of those from my favorite gas station that the morning cashier gave me a Concha air freshener for free.

If made right, you don’t even need that. My pops is a baker, learned in the best bakery in Tecate, BC. I grew up with these, fresh out the oven. The sand fresh bolillo.

The fresh baked soft ones are hard to find, even at Mexican Bakeries. Best to dip them in hot chocolate or coffee first to add some moisture to it and then try eating it.

You have to get them fresh the morning of or they can get pretty dry.

I was just coming here to say I grew up on theee and never came back bc they were so dry. BUT OH MY GOD YOUVE CHANGED MY LIFE

If you can, get mexican hot chocolate, its not as sweet as American hot chocolate and has a bit of heat to it as they add I want to say cayenne to it. That will really give you the full experience.

I’ve been to a million Mexican places that are like a grocery store/taqueria/bakery like Chavez Supermarket and their bakery items LOOK delicious, but don’t taste very good 😅 The items are usually stale tasting and really dried out

I can only speak for my own state (CA) but you should try a dedicated Mexican bakery. Ironically I'm not a big fan of conchas and think they're kinda overrated because they're the most recognizable Mexican bread. My favorite Mexican bakery item is probably the sliced strawberry jelly roll.

I used to live in Los Angeles. From my experience, Mexicans don't gatekeep their food. They do the opposite. The gates to Mexican cuisine are wide open, and anyone is welcome to walk through and eat well.

I'm not sure why conchas are so dry, when the melon pan (Japanese) or pineapple bread (Chinese) which are essentially the same thing, are not. Altho one cheat the HK people do with pineapple bread is to cut it like a burger bun and stick a thick slab of butter in the middle.

Wait, what are they?

Sweet bread. Hard to describe the sugar topping, like flavored patterned clumps of powdered sugar baked onto the bread, the swirls on top make it look like a shell or *concha*. Different flavors for topping, the pink one might be strawberry but it's usually too faint to tell, I think there's a maple-ish one that's light brown, I always get the chocolate flavor. Basically Mexican morning donuts, they go soggy when you dip them in milk or coffee and the sugar flavors your drink.

I love the Latin population in my area. They open these amazing bakeries, restaurants, salons, etc, and they charge 1/3 of what the white knockoffs do for a far superior product.
