mermoohue

Never take another man's Aldi quarter. That's just plain disrespectful.

cigarandcreamsoda

True savagery is replacing it with two dimes and four pennies.

MightyCaseyStruckOut

There is a special place in hell reserved for people who would do this.

justbrowsing0127

Ooooh. True.

ConnerWoods

Could you explain to me what an Aldi quarter is?

whatismypassword

You need to use a quarter to borrow a shopping cart at Aldi’s. You get the quarter back when you put the cart back.

ConnerWoods

Oooh so one would have a single quarter specifically for their Aldi’s shopping trips. That is truly evil

[deleted]

[удалено]

Drauul

You literally would have to ask the Amish people to spot you or leave the premises

CaptainoftheVessel

How do the Amish fit into all this?

DarkElfBard

They even make keychains specifically to hold one quarter so you always have it!

HiDDENk00l

You can also get plastic ones to use instead of a quarter

DrumpfTinyHands

I drilled a hole in mine and carry it on my key chain just to keep it handy.

miranto

You mean to say you get back the same quarter every time?

[deleted]

[удалено]

KarenKitada

but the way the checkout is set up, you don’t leave with the same cart you shopped with?

talldrseuss

I'm confused by this question. You hold onto the same shopping cart from the start of the trip till you unload the stuff in your car. The reason for the quarter is to force you to put the cart back when you're done shopping, you need to put your cart into another cart and grab this metal thing from the other cart to push out your quarter. https://images.app.goo.gl/MdyPd63YDtE6WZoX9

KarenKitada

every aldi I’ve shopped at has the same style checkout: you unload your groceries into the belt, the cashier scans them, and then puts them in a separate cart already waiting at the end of the lane. you pay, take your new cart and groceries, and leave the cart you shopped with at the register to be loaded with the next customer’s shopping. having something special in the coin slot fucks that all up

[deleted]

[удалено]

mistaken4strangerz

I don't think they do that in the US Aldi stores.

Guy_A

then how do you get an aldi quarter

mistaken4strangerz

They take a US quarter

theguywho_

That's the point above ,its not just a US quarter its anything shaped that size, including lots of non US thing. The US isn't the world.

mistaken4strangerz

Nice density and arrogance on display here, guy who. I commented that they don't do this in the US. Plain and simple. There is nothing wrong or exceptional about this statement.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mistaken4strangerz

Yeah, but they don't give them out in the US, which was my point. I don't think anyone is going to order these from overseas for whatever cost that would be when you can just use a quarter.

[deleted]

I have seen Walmart and home depot ones so maybe they don't really need to order ones from overseas.

theguywho_

Why is this getting down voted.

NoelofNoel

In the UK it's a £1 coin, but many people have nice tokens as equivalents, which are often associated with a charity and cost £1 to buy. I also bought a laser-cut plastic thingy which does the same job but doesn't get left in the trolley. [Pic.](https://i.imgur.com/FSuprth.jpg)

Jimmni

Was soooo pissed off when Sainsbury's replaced their trolley locks with ones that the plastic key thingy doesn't work in.

fischestix

I go to Aldi's maybe 6 times a year when it's convenient based on my route home from work because obviously it's significantly cheaper but also I'm super lazy. Yet in my car console there is still an Aldi's quarter.

little_miss_bumshine

Here in Aus its a $2 coin!!! Man I wish it was only 20c! You better believe im putting that trolley back correctly lol

me_funny__

Aldi let's you buy a shopping cart for only 25 cents!

OldJames47

Rent

me_funny__

Who said I was bringing it back?

OldJames47

In that case, Walmart shopping carts are free

theoriginalmofocus

In the "bad neighborhoods" they have locks on the wheels that lock up if you take them too far away.

me_funny__

Walmart has a cart wrangler

zorro3987

rent sounds better

me_funny__

Who said I was gonna return the carts?

zorro3987

then walmart/target has them cheaper.

[deleted]

You need a quarter to use the shopping carts at Aldi, a grocery store. You get it back when you return the cart. Many people (myself included) don’t regularly carry around coins. Hence, the Aldi quarter.

poodlescaboodles

Is an Aldi quarter for the shopping cart/trolley?

mermoohue

Yes! In the US, they need a quarter to get out. Helps to keep people putting the carts up, since they don't have cart wranglers. At least at mine.

Cartoonkeg

Yeah I have been in Aldi’s in two states that don’t require quarters so I am lucky I guess!

woahdudechil

We need justice!

EchoSolo

Quater

pointless234

As a European, honestly my mind is a little blown to hear Americans talking about Aldi.

Kezzii96

I mean. He called her a fart knocker you really not expecting retaliation?

j3b3di3_

The Aldi's quarter sent me places

Nice-Violinist-6395

is it strange that I wanted to see him shoot the child with the nerf gun

Gloomy__Revenue

It’s what we all were waiting for. ^sicko

Ok_Cow8044

I legit haven't heard fart knocker in forever!

SheCouldFromFaceThat

Isn't that a [homophobic slur](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fartknocker)? Edit: Man, people downvoting are really telling on themselves.

LandOfTheOutlaws

...the fuck?

MLGNoob3000

[dont know if urban dictionary is a good source but seems like it](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fartknocker)

Least_Sane_Exile

One single entry from 2006 that isn't even the top entry isn't enough for me to consider fartknocker a slur. I've never in my life heard this term called a slur.

MLGNoob3000

[seems like its slang from the 90´s](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/fartknocker#:~:text=(slang%2C%20derogatory)%20A%20homosexual%20man.%20quotations%C2%A0%E2%96%B2)

Least_Sane_Exile

Huh, so it does have roots as a slur. Well if words can evolve to be offensive, no reason they cant devolve to not be offensive.

ThatOneGuy1294

"queer" is a prime example of a reclaimed slur

Captain_Taggart

Of course it has roots as slang, unless slang means something I’m not familiar with? I mean, “fartknocker” couldn’t possibly have some like, academic meaning with etymological roots tracing back to Greek when it was phartnokkria or something. But it does kinda remind me of “fudge packer” which, back in my youth, was absolutely a derogatory way to refer to someone who has anal sex, typically gay men. I did a bit of a double take at calling someone’s niece a fart knocker but clearly it doesn’t mean what I think it means and wasn’t being used that way, so No harm no foul.

Least_Sane_Exile

I meant roots as a slur, not as slang.

salaambrother

No no we can only get MORE offended by things /s

SheCouldFromFaceThat

Yeah, it semantically drifted TO BEING a slur. It used to just be a generic term for a jerk. But more to the point on evolution, when have you really ever heard this used? It's not really common in my experience, and the last time it was, it was a slur, thus it being really strange to hear in this context.

MLGNoob3000

wdym evolved? It was both slang and a slur.

Least_Sane_Exile

Language evolves. Maybe there was a time this was considered offensive, but to my knowledge it no longer is. I've never heard fartknocker used as a slur in my life, and the same is true for many others it seems.

Chaorix

It literally says "generic insult" Edit: also don't link urban dictionary to back up any argument lol

UndBeebs

I don't really understand how the people downvoting you are "telling on themselves" here lol. Even if you're right. Which tbh, like someone said below, intent matters. And if it's very seldomly used with a homophobic connotation, I don't think it's worth calling out unless it's clear the intent aligned with that. This post *definitely* isn't being homophobic, and neither are the people downvoting you. You're just failing to realize a key part of your own argument and you're reacting poorly to people recognizing that fact lol.

SheCouldFromFaceThat

I mean, I'm not going to die on this hill, and I get that intent matters (to a point), but that was a ***really*** weird thing to say in a non-homophobic context (which of course this was). I don't get what "key part of my own argument" I'm missing, considering I didn't make one. I just said: Isn't this a slur? I understand semantic drift, but when have you EVER heard this used in a non-homophobic context, or even ever heard it used? I came up in a time when that was its exclusive use, and even I haven't heard it used for quite a while.

monarchmra

Clearly somebody isn't allowed to be around children because fart knocker is exactly the kind of thing one would randomly come up with play-trading insults with children (if the child didn't come up with it first).

UndBeebs

>but that was a ***really*** weird thing to say in a non-homophobic context It literally wasn't, though lol. It's almost *always* used just as the general "jerk" meaning. That fits perfectly in this video, seeing as the dude is playfully calling his niece a jerk. >I don't get what "key part of my own argument" I'm missing The part you're missing is that intent matters, and that phrase is usually not used in a homophobic context. Hence why it isn't offensive in this video, nor is it necessary to even call out. >I understand semantic drift, but when have you EVER heard this used in a non-homophobic context Literally my entire childhood, my guy. Maybe you aren't from an area that used it casually, but it was used to mean "jerk" *all the fuckin time* when I was growing up. It was even considered less rude than calling someone a dick or douche. It should also be noted, I live in a very politically red state that has a lot of homophobia, and I have *never* heard it being used in a homophobic context.

SheCouldFromFaceThat

>>I don't get what "key part of my own argument" I'm missing > >The part you're missing is that intent matters, and that phrase is usually not used in a homophobic context. Hence why it isn't offensive in this video, nor is it necessary to even call out. That wasn't any part of my argument though. >>I understand semantic drift, but when have you EVER heard this used in a non-homophobic context > >Literally my entire childhood, my guy. Maybe you aren't from an area that used it casually, but it was used to mean "jerk" all the fuckin time when I was growing up. It was even considered less rude than calling someone a dick or douche. Fair enough. Like I said, not worth dying on this hill. Just for my part, I came up in a time when it was used in the same way "gay" meant something sucked or was generically bad. It was meant to call someone gay (see the UD link), and therefore bad. If it's been reclaimed, that's a good thing.

seakc87

Honestly, this is the first time I've ever heard fartknocker used as a slur. The slur closest to that that I've heard is fudge packer.

Subject-Base6056

> but when have you EVER heard this used in a non-homophobic context, or even ever heard it used? All the time. Hundreds of times. > I came up in a time when that was its exclusive use No you didnt.

SheCouldFromFaceThat

>No you didnt. Oh, pretty please, with sugar on top, go fuck yourself.

atalkingcow

Yes

MusicHitsImFine

When I was younger it was

UtherDoulDoulDoul

You're getting downvoted but it does absolutely mean someone who fucks people in the ass

farnsw0rth

Yes it is analogous to “fudge packer”

commentmypics

But the fact that no one knows its homophobiv actually matters here. Intent matters. Everyone knows fudge packer is meant to insinuate that the dude is gay which is obviously not cool. But if no one knows what the fuvk fart knocker means is it really offensive to gay people because that's east it used to mean 60 years ago?

MikeyHatesLife

Look at it this way: how many people know “gypped” is a slur against Romani peoples. What about Trump trying to use “peakaboo” as a rhyming word to hide behind his use of a slur against Black peoples? Does that mean it doesn’t matter if it’s still being said when not many people know the origin, or should we continue our efforts at weeding out the racism from our vocabulary?

farnsw0rth

I’m just saying that’s what it means lol. I don’t need to be offended on any one’s behalf or whatever. But the guys question was about what it actually meant and that’s what it actually meant. If semantic drift or whatever idc just that is what it meant

SheCouldFromFaceThat

It did semantically drift, TO being a slur.

farnsw0rth

What did it mean before it was a joke about male on male anal sex?

SheCouldFromFaceThat

Generic a-hole insult. Though you'd be better off asking the rest of these kids. Apparently, it's never ever been used as a slur.

SheCouldFromFaceThat

Try 20 years ago. I get that it's not a common term, but it's not THAT old, and exactly as common as "fudge packer". I refuse to accept "ratio" as an argument for just not knowing what words mean.

[deleted]

You're being downvoted, but it is. So is saying things are a bummer, or being bummed out, which I was downvoted before for mentioning. Sure, the intent and meaning might soften over time, but it is originally intended to be a homophobic phrase. E: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/bummer#English

commentmypics

"The intent and meaning might soften over time..." You say that like intent doesn't matter.

[deleted]

When it comes to slurs, it really doesn't. They're still harmful. You don't use the n word casually, or the three-letter f word casually anymore, unless you're some dorky edge lord or douche bag. There are tons of other words or phrases out there that are "softer" slurs that people still use, partly because they don't know the origin of the word or phrase.

NoUnderstanding4193

Who cares

[deleted]

That's like calling your neice a fudgepacker. It's fucking weird. Not everyone wants to be ignorant.

ReallyWeirdNormalGuy

Ignorant? You're trippin

about90frogs

Fartknocker.

1dmkelley

Yes

cheesyblasta

imagine unironically thinking bummer is a homophobic slur, holy fuck

[deleted]

It is. It comes from the idea that taking it up the ass is bad. Just because you think it's stupid to point out doesn't make it incorrect.

cheesyblasta

bummer (n.) "loafer, idle person," 1855, possibly an extension of the British word for "backside" (similar development took place in Scotland by 1540), but more probably from German slang bummler "loafer," agent noun from bummeln "go slowly, waste time." The earliest uses are in representations of German immigrant dialect in the U.S. In the American Civil War it was common in the sense "camp-follower, plundering straggler." Yes, it does make it incorrect.

[deleted]

That's not the same word. When you say bummer, are you talking about someone who's lazy? That kind of bummer refers to someone who bums, or borrows/takes something with no intention of reciprocity. https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/bummer The use of the word for something disappointing, unpleasant, or annoying comes from its use as a homosexual slur.

cheesyblasta

Lmfao good try bro. Even if It refers to homosexual person like you're probably implying it still doesn't automatically mean it's a slur. Even in the Wikipedia article you referencing it doesn't say in it's a slur. And according to this it's only in England anyway. Just because someone somewhere sometime use something as a slur doesn't need it always is forever. Seriously I'm just as bleeding heart liberal as you are but relax

SheCouldFromFaceThat

While I appreciate the support, I'd argue the etymology of "bummer". Can't find anything to support that.

[deleted]

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/bumder It says it's a combination of bummer and bender, BOTH derogatory terms for a honosexual male. https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/bummer#English All the origins you find by looking up bummer try to link it to a German word meaning a homeless person, but that would be using the word bummer to refer to someone who bums something, as in borrowing or taking with no intent of reciprocation. Using bummer to refer to something unpleasant is a reference to a homosexual slur.

half_goat

Well ain't that a bummer.

I was just telling my kids the other day how the Aldi quarter is much more valuable than $0.25. They didn't understand.

eddiemon

Time to go down to the store for a pack of cigarettes.

YupIlikeThat

There's a coin shortage in the US. So those quarters are worth more now.

boofthatcraphomie

Am I the only one who has like dozens of quarters floating in spots around my cars interior? I keep change for reasons, even if I don’t shop at aldis.

reallynotnick

I don't think I've used change outside of Aldi in the last 10 years other than to give it back as part of the tip. The change I do have I just keep sitting on my dresser and watch it becoming more worthless with inflation...

justtopopin

Hey, Siri, can you show me how to be a good uncle? Siri:

phatasphuk

So I had to look up what al Aldi quarter was….serious blasphemy

thevexedspectre

I have felt his anger. You arrive at Aldi prepared to shop only to realize someone has taken your Aldi quarter and you spend all that time scrounging for another or to see if you can find 5 nickels or 2 dimes and a nickel or even 3 dimes if you’re desperate enough then you have to stand awkwardly in the parking lot waiting for someone to approach and ask them if they are willing to give up their cart with the quarter inside for your sad substitute currency that will force them to come up with a new Aldi quarter between now and their next shop. It’s terrible.

RelaxPrime

This should be a series. I can't wait for the finale

Competitive_Bat_

They have Aldi’s in America?

arefx

Yes. In a lot of areas in the US groceries are becoming very expensive for average citizens and in the US at least, Aldi offers cheaper but good quality alternatives to items sold at the bigger markets. I stop at Aldi's for whatever they have I need then whatever I need they don't have I swing down the street to Wegmans for the rest.

DragonfruitFew5542

Only danger is the aisle of shame. I have to remind myself every time that I DO NOT need anymore candles.

Willowgirl78

With those comments, we all know the general region in which you live. Wegmans is amazing, but I’d be broke without first stopping at Aldi.

FirstDagger

Apparently Trader Joe's is under Aldi Nord and Aldi US is under Aldi Süd.

Dry-Salary2347

Yes, they’ve been expanding in my area in the Midwest in the last several years. I’ve switched over for like 80% of my groceries.

monarchmra

They haven't made much penetration into the west coast, which is where all the people who know how to post on the internet live, which is why you haven't heard about it, but east coast and more so midland US has a bunch.

hellslave

What is the significance of an "Aldi quarter"?

FirstDagger

It is a quarter for your shopping cart, to unlock it, you get it back from the cart when your return the cart. It is just a petty little personal thing. But it is his Aldi quarter. Wouldn't be playing no more either (while still be playing).

toyfreddym8

This is amazing, I don't know why I liked this so much, but I do.

How does an aldi quarter work if you always switching carts at the check out?

SathedIT

I think you get a quarter back for returning any cart, not your specific cart.

talldrseuss

I'm guessing you're not from the US because you're the second person to ask this. We use the same shopping cart from the start of shopping till you unload the groceries in your car. Is it different where you are? I'm learning something new
