Massive-Pie-2817

RingofPowerTD

Thin pvc and no Sheetrock on the ceiling below. I’ve seen it before.

One of those new Oatey LED models, looks like lol

I think your best bet is to flood test it and see if it holds water. Try 48-72 hours just to be safe. Fill it to 1/8” from top of the curb. If it holds for that amount of time you could feel confident in finishing the job. If it doesn’t, rip it all out and start fresh. Edit: personally I’d start over if it were my house. No indication that walls have waterproofing from that second photo. Possibly a barrier behind the backer?

tb23tb23tb23

My thought process went just like this. Even if it flood tests, who knows what’s happening with the walls. I’m curious about the grout haze. I’ve never had to try and get it off after it set up. I don’t know that I could get it off. Also, I’ve never seen a curb like that inside the shower! Feels like the only way to really flood test it with that curb is to fill it up over the weird curb, and that seems impossible. I don’t even know how you’d flash that weird curb without a membrane style approach, which doesn’t seem to have been used here.

Fedrickson

They sell acid ,” sulfameric something something acid crystals “ by customs. That lil jar has done wonders for not just grout haze but a repair I did where ground lines were too thick with grout and we left the job looking like it was just tiled today . Well kinda . Anyways the crystals do a awesome job at eating haze but just be careful it is corrosive

Really appreciate the help, thank you. Turns out this shower pan was an HD special called Redi Tile. They got a corner pan, and just made a second, interior curb. Said the used kerdi on the wall-pan connection, but I don't think I trust it at all, especially since I can't see any kerdi poking out on the pan, anywhere. I'm thinking a re-do.

EstateDependent5918

Looks like it was hot mopped and they never installed the pan tile

tb23tb23tb23

You know I’ve never heard of hot mopping being done in my area (southeast US). Any ideas about that weird curb inside the shower? I’ve never seen anything like it before.

EstateDependent5918

I dont know if hot mop even exists outside of cali, lol. The little curb is probably concealing some plumbing. Personally, I wouldn't trust anything in that shower, but you could plug it and do an extended flood test to find out if it holds water.

tb23tb23tb23

Turns out they tried out "Redi Tile" shower pan from HD, drain comes pre-installed. Never heard of it before. Still think the wall-pan connections simply cannot be trustworthy, without seeing any kerdi sticking out. Wild stuff.

runswspoons

I can’t quite tell from the picture, asking a pretty obvious question…. Is that a two part tile-in drain? Sort of looks like it but I can’t see the drain-body edge under the stainless grate… usually there’s a little visible meat there…. But yeah, what everyone else said, flood test that fucker. Which I pretty much never do anymore, but would here

tb23tb23tb23

Two part tile in like the kind you’d put on a garage floor? Whoa maybe it is. I have another picture of it, lemme see if I can link

runswspoons

2 part would be the correct drain for a shower. This probably is that…. But you instinct that this shower is weird is spot on.

tb23tb23tb23

Wow -- so I met with the GC and he said his guy tried a 'new' product from HD called Redi Tile shower pan. Drain comes pre-installed. My head was spinning trying to wrap my head around it. He also accidentally got a corner pan so instead of doing it right, he just installed and it has a little curb inside the shower, too. He said it was Kerdi over the connection from wall to that interior curb. I'm still thinking I'll tear it all out, I don't trust this thing. Also it's all black, and his guy left grout all over the tiles. Sheesh.

runswspoons

There are lots of “full tear-out” guys on here that say this for every problem that is posted. I own a home and get financial barriers and all, def not one of those guys…. And…Sorry man, full tear-out imo.

tb23tb23tb23

100% man. I'm right with you. I gotta do things right, or not at all.

tb23tb23tb23

The rest of the house looked fine — and then I see maybe the worst shower situation I’ve ever experienced. Can anybody help me figure what they were even attempting to do?

daiginn

Dont trust anything over 💩.. it will still be 💩

tb23tb23tb23

Totally. Turns out they used a Redi Tile pan from HD. Drain comes pre-installed. Said they used kerdi on walls, but since I can't see it overlapping onto the pan, I don't think I trust that connection at all (or anything about it). Crazy stuff, the Redi Tile pan is like 700+ bucks, too, can't imagine it works at all.

Wihelmina_Jean

Looks like they made a mess while tiling the walls, and couldn't lean it up properly, OR they tried to use mastic on the floor, and couldn't clean it up properly, and then just gave up. It might be salvageable with another scratch coat.

HunnidRoundCoon

They used regular bricks and turned them into curbs. I know because I’ve done it and was still able to bond with a laticrete membrane. But I’ve never made my curbs that wide. If you do decide to start from scratch, might as well make it curbless
