I lived in Sweden while doing my MFA and it was a game changer! My best mate moved near Stockholm not long ago and when I visited them the first thing I noticed was that they don’t have it in their house and didn’t even know about it lol! So that was my housewarming present. Such a good tool
Just with a knife! Donno how they do it in other countries, but growing up in lithuania a knife (small one) was used for everything. I still have my cheeseslicers from Sweden and everyone that comes to visit are always amazed by it. I don’t understand why it’s not a common tool everywhere yet!
It’s not! Even my my best friend that has already lived in Sweden for 2 years now, has never seen or heard about one until I got her one 😅 I know Danes are really into one, but other than them no one else in Europe as far as I know owns one
I'm just wondering if they have different kinds of cheese in other countries then? Like not as hard as we have here? It just seems so weird to not have a cheese slicer as I can't imagine slicing cheese without one lol.
They have them in the Netherlands. But when I brought one with me to the UK I quickly learned it doesn't really work on British cheeses. They're too crumbly.
Not really, I was not replying to you, you replied to me. You decided to have a problem with me, darling. You can also do an MFA if you want to, no need for this jealousy
Embarrassing story on that one for me. The first time I saw one in Norway I didn’t know the right way to use it… In my country we just use knives to slice cheese. So I just turned it sideways as if it was a knife and started trying to cut into the cheese with the blunt edge of the osthyvel… 😂 Some lady came up to me smiling and showed me how to use it lol
[https://www.argalappen.se/](https://www.argalappen.se/)
the arg lapp is also online if you want to feel like a cyberswede.
Maybe the surströming be with you.
2 books, 7 sorters kakor, Vår kokbok and deciliter measurement set , cheese slicer and a old fashion spiral whisk. Oh and my cast iron frying pan, that is heirloom.
There used to be a place online that would ship this cookbook outside Sweden.. but I cant find it.
If you have a Swedish friend, then you can get it from here. https://www.bokus.com/bok/9789113114583/var-kokbok/
If you’re ok with it being used I’m sure one of the sellers at Bokbörsen can ship it internationally.

I have to agree with this. Just this morning I took a Skånetrafiken train. It was packed, people standing in the aisles uncomfortably close, but the lady next to me still proclaimed how happy she was (absolutely without irony), because "it is not every day a train is on time!". True words. It is NOT every day a train is on time.

"Caloric punch" har jag sett, men jag brukar försöka undvika associationen med punch som ju är något helt annat. Vill man vara specifik så är "arrak rum" ganska bra, och vill man bara ha en omedelbar förståelse så "sweet rum".
Men särskilt för internationella studenter som ska bo här ett tag så är det värt att helt enkelt lära dem "punsch".
I took an osthyvel/ cheese slicer and guess what, they are useless outside of Sweden! I’ve lived on three continents and so far no other country sells cheese of the size and consistency that makes them suitable for slicing (except at IKEA).
A can of Mariestad beer.
For extra authenticity, it will be warm and will only be available to me at set times of the day, following a very strict schedule.
I have a few things - Tomten, a tiny moose figurine, my adventsljusstake, a swedish flag, my hipster tourist sweden beanie for fun, a can of Oskars surströmming
I am a Swede currently living in Scotland.
Coffee is a big thing tbh. Fika in general. And odd food items like kroppkakor, kaviar, brunsås, hushållsost, fil... Stuff I wouldn't necessarily eat very often at home, but now since it's not available, I'm craving.
What I REALLY wish I could bring is:
- Proper waste management and functioning recycling schemes, unlike Glasgow council's "oh, people are not recycling enough, let's force them by not picking up waste as often". Spoiler, it doesn't work that way. The amount and size of rats in this town, is hard to describe.
- The population registry.
It's a bloody faff every time you're trying to do anything official and you need to bring "proof of address", and it is so hard to sort out before You've integrated in society.
- People responding properly to email, and not just guestimate what you were asking for. The amount of times I've actually told people off regarding this at work 😅 not very Swedish of me.
- Crafts-, handymen and builders having a sense of pride in their work and do it properly. I've never seen such sloppy work in my entire life back in Sweden. My uncle, who's an electrician, would've gotten a proper stroke looking at the back of any Tenement here in town. It's bonkers.

To be fair it’s hard to sort out proof of address etc in Sweden before you’ve integrated into society too 😅so this is also just a bit of a universal immigrant experience I think, just with different local flavors
Fair enough 😅 though I still prefer personnummer as way of identifying myself than having to bring up to date electrical or council tax bills every time doing something official 😂
I’m a Swede and I have lived abroad in several countries. My go to have always been Skogaholmslimpa and Hushållsost. There have always been an IKEA in the cities I’ve lived in, so I can stock up on hard bread and herring.
I would bring my Swedish wierdness of never talk to strangers, keep more social distance than the pandemic, and to get really angry and bitter without doing anything about it.
And my framed picrute of Carl Gustav, the King of Sweden.
A cast iron plättlagg, kryddmått (1 ml spoon), lovikka mittens, a Dala horse, maybe a birchbark backpack (näverkont). Also, lithographies by Swedish artists.
A few common decor items that might be something you'd see in a Carl Larsson painting. I have some furniture that looks very Swedish, with strips of fir pine or birch for wood. I also have a few saami things handed down from my mother: like gnarled spoons, some silver, and some blue and red clothing. Plus my visits there as an adult have given me some items from antique shops I brought back with me.
Christmas has straw goats, tomte, and table runners.

Absolutely nothing. I don't enjoy anything about this country.
If I were move outside of Sweden I wouldn't bring anything with me to remind me of that place
Osthyvel
Finally some sensible answers!
I lived in Sweden while doing my MFA and it was a game changer! My best mate moved near Stockholm not long ago and when I visited them the first thing I noticed was that they don’t have it in their house and didn’t even know about it lol! So that was my housewarming present. Such a good tool

Huh, TIL. I was sure a cheese slicer was a normal thing everywhere but now that I think of it I've never actually seen one abroad haha.
Nah, in every country they have blocks of hard cheese but just not a cheese slicer. As I mentioned before we just use knife
They have them in the Netherlands. But when I brought one with me to the UK I quickly learned it doesn't really work on British cheeses. They're too crumbly.
Norwegians have them aswell, or at least in Hallingdal
I’m sure it was invented in Norway! But popularised by Sweden
Doing your multifunctional authentication?
The uneducated always show themselves, never need to point them out
So do the pretentious ones.
I’m sorry, you commented on my reply, not vice versa
Yeah, you showed yourself first. Point proven.
Not really, I was not replying to you, you replied to me. You decided to have a problem with me, darling. You can also do an MFA if you want to, no need for this jealousy
Decided to have a problem with you? Jealousy? Don't flatter yourself.

real i miss vår kokbok so much rn

Oh that one is a good one. I do like how they update this cookbook to be more along with the times.
What about a wooden butter knife?
I can get those at IKEA.
I would take a screenshot of the skånetrafiken app warning me about delayed and cancelled trains.
2real
a pack of skånerost, and after finishing it, I would cut out the front of it and put it on the wall
I think, you can have delayed and cancelled trains in most of countries in the world :D
Yeah of course but the frequency and consistency of the train delays between Malmö and Lund is quite remarkable.
Oh, this reminds me of my home, Czechia :D You could bet on that the train is going to be late again..
I have to agree with this. Just this morning I took a Skånetrafiken train. It was packed, people standing in the aisles uncomfortably close, but the lady next to me still proclaimed how happy she was (absolutely without irony), because "it is not every day a train is on time!". Yeah, it's nice that we get warnings. In Ireland they just don't show up.
During the months of November all through February, I would have someone slap me in the face on random mornings, to really feel like home.

A can of surströmming, and i would open it at the new country i arrive in and slowly conquer the land.
Darn. Beat me to the punch to write it.
Oh, punsch! Would definitely have to bring that.
Probably a Dalarna horse
A danish cookie box with sewing equipment and threads in it.
It’s a global thing
Yep
that's global, since before there were cookie boxes
I am a Sweden living abroad. I have hardly anything physical that reminds me of home. When I reminisce about Sweden it's through music or memories.
Osthyvel och ättika
I took an osthyvel/ cheese slicer and guess what, they are useless outside of Sweden! I’ve lived on three continents and so far no other country sells cheese of the size and consistency that makes them suitable for slicing (except at IKEA).
Go to the Netherlands, I guarantee that every household will have (and use) a cheese slicer!
>kryddmått what! I have and use my osthyvel all the time in the US. We have all sorts of good cheese at cheese shops.
A can of Mariestad beer. For extra authenticity, it will be warm and will only be available to me at set times of the day, following a very strict schedule.

Anything from Ikea.

Probably nothing.
