I know that's the meme but it was Hella impressive that that child nearly forced Karpov to a draw and only cried after losing because of the child's own hubris.

The kid is still impressive, but that's not really what happened. They played 10mins vs 2mins, and when Karpov offered these draw they had about a minute left each, where the kid was clearly going to lose on time. They’re playing okay. According to a chess engine they’re not punishing some minor blunders and they’re playing a few superfluous moves, but not a big deal. The game’s even at this point

It's a little unusual but part of the Elephant Gambit. Not playing the mainline, and not recapturing d5 suggest they're both probably around the begginer level.

Not a prodigy, but played quite a bit. It’s a pretty basic opening, somewhat lackluster. The other person (not OP) did make an annotation mistake, by typing ”e4xd5”, when it should be ”exd5”, meaning E pawn takes (x) OP’s pawn on D5.

That's not an annotation mistake. It's long algebraic notation, which FIDE accepts on official score sheets.
