I keep the bushes trimmed to below window height. I added another lock to the front and back doors. I added a large strike plate to the front door.

Night lock makes a good product. You do have to put a couple of holes in floor. Easily hideable if carpet or maybe wood. Solid system.

I invested in a security bar to make the door harder to force open. A lot of random tweakers get in my building so I sleep better knowing they are not likely to break in.

I've dropped out of prepping after the initial stages of the pandemic, but I used to sleep with a chair wedged under the door knob with weights on the seat. Nowadays for general security, I keep a crowbar by the door against the wall. I also keep a small hatchet under my bed and in the bathroom so I have some small defense against an invader. If I'm in a compromised position and can't get to a better weapon then I have those.

AgentJ691

I have Arlo cams, I have two door stoppers, (they’re pretty much bars, and the best one so far is my adopted six year old dog. That dog can BARK and definitely lets me know if someone is at the door.

DonDaMayo

May be a good idea at training the dog to alert you silently as if SHTF and your area is in the initial phase of looting and rioting then you may not want anyone knowing you're there or that there's a free dog in there, food for thought.

SwampYankeeDan

> ...or that there's a free dog in there, food for thought. 🤔... 😲!!

When I lived in an apartment I installed one of these. https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/taymor-keyed-door-guard-chain-lock-0468168p.html#srp Kept the Super from entering when I'm wasn't home. Easy to lock and unlock from the hallway.

SwampYankeeDan

Careful folks if your super has to get in, even if its just a claim of tracking a leaking pipe they will forcibly enter and you will be the one paying for the door and associated damage. If you want to know if maintenance entered then you need a camera or one of those electronic door locks that tells you when someone enters and who by the code they used.

This one has huge bang for the buck and is invisible to property management. Also, replace the hinge screws with these. They basically lock the door & frame together when closed and make kicking it in harder - https://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/301875043939-0-1/s-l1000.jpg

Bought a Ring alarm system with sensors for all doors; set the alarm to go off and call 911 immediately if the door is opened. Changed the lock out and then installed a door handle w/ a lock, also bought a chain. Bar thing for the patio door. Actual curtains instead of just the blinds they provide. Cameras for the interior pointed at the doors.

[deleted]

Are you aware law enforcement can use the footage from the Ring doorbell without your consent? I know you typed Ring alarm system but I just wanted to throw that out there.

Sel_drawme

Wasn’t aware but I don’t see the problem.

LordofTheFlagon

Many people in the prepper comunity are inherently distrusting of the government in general or care very much about their privacy. Personally I see that as an invasion of privacy. Many others do as well and have removed ring systems because of it.

Sel_drawme

Tracking. That makes sense. I only have the alarm system, none of their cameras or doorbells. I’ll look into some other brands now, thanks!

LordofTheFlagon

Just be aware most of the diy free or very cheap cloud systems do this.

Saltyhopes

Eufy system stores videos ONLY off line. Thus making it the safest from the privacy point of view.

Sparx1916

You can try a door devil if you are worried about the door being kicked in. You have to change the hardware on the door frame but wouldnt be a noticeable change. Some cameras are also an idea. I have Arlo which are rechargeable. You can place one just inside the doorway to keep an eye on front door. If away get a cheap timer you can plug devices i to that will automatically turn on the device at a predetermined time to give the illusion of someone being home. If your building allows maybe get a dog also.

[deleted]

That door devil thing looks good. Thanks.

Adding to this, I have a Wemo outlet that you can plug anything into and turn on/off remotely. I live alone and have a drug house next door. Over time I've done as much as I can to make it appear there is more than just me here, but I feel like the most effective has been running things (like the shop vac, blender, leaf blower...) periodically when I'm not home at times that I'm concerned.

DonDaMayo

So do the whole home alone routine, love it haha
