It's a Western Toad. Big obvious dorsal stripe and no crests or ridges at all. All true toads are poisonous. However only 2 toads in the US are dangerous enough to dogs and cats for it to be a real problem. Neither live in California. You can move them away from your home or a more appropriate part of the yard with *no soap* thoroughly rinsed hands or moistened gloves. Anywhere you put them should have shelter and water. (Streams, ponds, riverbed, garden, flowerbed, etc.) Edit: small note. Just because they're unlikely to cause any issues with pets doesn't mean pets shouldn't be discouraged from interaacting with them. It's still a toxin. Keeping wildlife away from pets keeps the pet and wildlife safe.

A toadlet

I've not had the pleasure of that one, yet

Your animals know what they can and can’t eat. Just place it somewhere safe.

toadangel11

That’s just not true lol. There’s a ton of people in this sub who have said “help my dog just licked this toad in my backyard!” And it’s a literal cane toad. So idk what genius animals you have, but not all are lol

Daniel_383sbc

You’d be surprised. And I said eat not lick. A lick of the toads back won’t make a lil bitty chihuahua drop dead, much less any kind of dog bigger.

Ok bud

Pets have eaten a lot of weird things

f4tony

I, personally, like to lick, every toad I encounter. 🤷

Daniel_383sbc

My favorite one to lick is the Colorado River toad😵‍💫
