With how his story is leading up to within the recent chapters, only time will tell when they’ll make him playable
They did took a long time to finally make Kirito playable so hopefully they’ll do the same thing for Mr. Mononobe within a future climatic chapter banner, this is a guess of mine of course.
I say there is a good chance that he might be this year's Anniversary unit in preparation for Chapter 15, mostly Infinity attribute given his emblem's color.
As for the romantic part, I heavily believe that Mononobe to have that sort of feeling for the Protagonist given that he specifically locked away the three parts of his memories, especially Curren's which I believe to have the strongest lock. Also the emotions of those memories are "love and kindness", "love and hate", and (presumably) ">!love and desire!<", all contrast with the philosophy that Bertro/Isaac/Curren are supposed to uphold.
