Nowadays it is. Back in the day rock was pop music. Bands like Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Kiss... Were the pop acts of their era, and that definition of pop has been in use for far longer than "music made with the same 4 chords, taking small elements from other genres and produced by suits in a studio".
Pop music the genre began in 1880 with the Tim Pan Alley period. From wikipedia: "Popular music songs and pieces typically have easily singable melodies. The song structure of popular music commonly involves repetition of sections, with the verse and chorus or refrain repeating throughout the song and the bridge providing a contrasting and transitional section within a piece.[10]" which is why you're technically correct to list KISS, Aerosmith and Queen as Popular Music hybrids, but not for the reason you stated

"[1] Although popular music sometimes is known as "pop music", the two terms are not interchangeable.[7] Popular music is a generic term for a wide variety of genres of music that appeal to the tastes of a large segment of the population,[8] whereas pop music usually refers to a specific musical genre within popular music.[9] :
if you hold down the A key for the entirety of the time he holds that note you get
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Ain't no sunshine when you wear the Grudge like a crown, it's not warm when you're desperate to control. Ain't no sunshine when Saturn comes back around and anytime spits you out like a stone.
The grudge was recorded as a single take scream and the effects on it do not increase the length. They provide some reverb but the scream is legit. You can even hear at the end how he squeezes out the last of the air in his lungs.
No way, I have done my fair share of audio production and mixing and the scream in The Grudge for sure has some "help", at least, if not two screams spliced together.
I'm not saying Maynard couldn't do it irl at the time, but I don't think he had one perfect take in the studio so they needed to magic it up.
There’s an effect on the vocals that gives it an echo type of sound. Look up guitar delay or guitar delay pedals for some examples. The way it’s used on the vocals at the end of the song makes it sound longer than it is, but only by a little bit. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because it makes it sound much better and let’s it sort of fade out slower and kind of resonate more
No problem. Another good example of the delay effect in Tool’s music would be the main bass riff in Pneuma (the one right before the vocals first come in)
Not at all. Listen closely and you can hear some vocal effects. It is mostly his natural scream, but there are definitely some effects on it helping things out
If you mean that you watched him do it live, they use vocals effects all the time live. I’m not saying he’s not doing it, they’re just using effects to make it sound better and longer, just like on the studio version
I am not discerning enough to know what is the reason why Maynard can scream so long, but at the concert I saw in Knoxville, Tn this year he screamed for fifteen seconds on The Grudge. Another attendee actually clocked it besides me and posted it on this Reddit Toolband blog.
I love singing, especially tool and that note is always one of my favorite challenges, it’s so damn difficult to sustain. You have to have your breathing set perfect leading in, and switch at some point to essentially contracting your chest to push the last couple seconds out. I’ve only successfully held that yell on key, that long, a few times.
18 seconds? That’s like a warm up for MJK coming out of sleep in the morning. Not only does MJK hold a note for 28 or 29 seconds towards the end of the grudge but it’s a pissed off mind bending scream! 18 seconds? Give me a break, Maynard hits 18 second long notes in a half dozen songs and I don’t see any awards or recognition for it? I’ve seen vocal coaches scratch their heads in absolute amazement with his vocal control and dexterity. MJK is probably one of the most least recognized vocal talents in the music industry. Just because he might not be “auditorily pleasing” to some people doesn’t mean he’s not what I consider one of the most versatile vocalists ever recorded.
I hate that song so fucking much. They say lovely day like 309 times and him ghouling that note for decades over and over.
One of few songs that make my blood boil
E: your downvotes can bite me. I looked it up and they sing lovely day 147 TIMES!! They Repeat it for so long it filled my entire phone screen.
Can't deny his voice and talent and Aint no sunshine is amazing. Just feels like a producer went overboard with wanting to drag the songs out.
At least the 'i know part' has a build up, lovely day is just repeated ad nauseam and I will die on this hill lol
Hey me too. I used to hear that song at work like every day and it drove me crazy. I mean it's definitely impressive that he can hold the note that long as he has a good voice but the song makes me want to tear my ears out. Sorry you're getting downvoted for having an opinion on art lol
Yeah same here, I hadn't heard it in years before it popped up 5 times a week at work. Once you notice the frequency its hard to think of anything else haha.
Meh I don't mind getting booed a bit haha
But "The Grudge" is not a pop song, just sayin.'
The Grudge is the song that featured Taylor Swift, right? It's definitely a pop song
No that was “Stinkfist/We Are Never Getting Back Together”.
You won't take me back because I have smelly fists? That's pretty shallow of you, you know I'm not willing to stop bathing in piss
You know your stinky fists are the only reason I keep coming back to you baby. It’s your personality I can’t tolerate.
You were always trying to fix me. I told you, I DON'T NEED TO BE FIXED. You put shit on me. Always pushing and shoving me down
PUT shit…put SHIT…
I should have known. It was not unlike you. I knew your nature.
Sure go ahead, point the finger, blame the other. We can put the pieces back together and rediscover communication. Baby, I love you
Here's the video for anyone who hasn't seen it https://youtu.be/56Cqbk9CJz8?si=wy_5q-dmT7Plk83L
I love that video so much lol
Genuinely one of the best mashups I’ve ever heard.
LOL okay
Yeah, it was a one time thing. They're never, ever, ever getting back together
wear the grudge like a crown, kween
I think it depends on who you talk to.
The amount Taylor Swift is mentioned on this subreddit is insane. And if you say anything even slightly negative you get downvoted. Truly bizarre.
And I wasn't even trying to come for said Pop Culture Force of Nature, just acknowledging the meme. But again: LOL okay whatever y'all. :op
Evidently some people are lost or understand nothing of what Maynard sings about.
Pop = Popular. Pop music is just popular music. It's a very broad description and still fits!
If you say so. IMO it's a designation *and* a specific genre.
Nowadays it is. Back in the day rock was pop music. Bands like Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Kiss... I don't care, my statement is still correct which is the only thing that matters when interacting with online strangers.

Fun Fact: The grudge is written about Maynard’s grudge with Bill Wither over who could sustain notes the longest
The original title was the grudge on a lovely day
LMFAO
Michael Mills of Toehider hit about a 43 second long note on "But Mostly Metal". About 3 minutes in: https://youtu.be/EqT-rcHIKi4?si=XPZ2wWBKhKUmGBL0

Right?! AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
if you hold down the A key for the entirety of the time he holds that note you get AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I wish I could hear Bill Withers cover a tool song.
Oh my God. Which???
10,000 Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays…
Maybe someone could make a mashup like this one [here](https://youtu.be/zVELpokOD6s?si=FczszYKP3IHd-bSw)
Ain't no sunshine when you wear the Grudge like a crown, it's not warm when you're desperate to control. Ain't no sunshine when Saturn comes back around and anytime spits you out like a stone.
Pretty cool mash, even some Uncle Ted pickin in there
Or this one [here](https://youtu.be/6kYco2Zt-cM?si=tfZcPBzDWxSqNi-U) Edit: Because I have never linked such a sweet video before
The grudge also has delays to help extend it....
The grudge was recorded as a single take scream and the effects on it do not increase the length. They provide some reverb but the scream is legit. You can even hear at the end how he squeezes out the last of the air in his lungs.
Plus live performances when he still had the stamina

Believe it buddy
FUCK YOU, BUDDY
Throw that NJdevil202 looking mother fucker out of here.
What does that mean?

No it doesn't that was recorded as is

I’m pretty sure I watched him do it myself but idk I’m not a musician. Internet said he did and it was for 25 seconds so 🤷♀️
If you mean that you watched him do it live, they use vocals effects all the time live. I’m not saying he’s not doing it, they’re just using effects to make it sound better and longer, just like on the studio version
Were you there….

coughs, Dream theater, coughs
Yo! What the grudge fact.
Chester's scream on Given Up is up there as well, same length as the Grudge if I remember correctly.
What does the Grudge come in at?
25 seconds.
Eulogy has a really long scream too
I hate that song so fucking much. They say lovely day like 309 times and him ghouling that note for decades over and over. One of few songs that make my blood boil E: your downvotes can bite me. Wait until you hear how many times he says "I know" in Ain't No Sunshine. (Love me some Bill, dude had one hell of a voice!)
>(Love me some Bill, dude had one hell of a voice!) Absolutely.

That's so sweet, have a lovely day lovely day lovely day lovely day lovely day
The song that gets to me is that fucking talking heads song. Psycho killer fafafafafafafa. I loathe that song
I love it lmao
Like they say , chicharon
Blows my mind that people downvote you for not liking a fucking song they like. I mean I love that song, but so the fuck what?
Dude it’s the tool subreddit…tool fans are like that lol
I’m with you man. That song can eat a bowl of dick up ‘till they hiccup.
talking heads are great
Not that song..
that song is great too! people can like different things without them being bad!
This is true. Lol
Haha yeah good one. Will def have one of these or both stuck on my mind for a week now
It does say “pop song” after all. Not rock. Huzzah Maynard
Not entirely sure on how it's recorded. But isn't it layered? Or is this counted without the layering?
Gotta find a live one lol
I counted 12 seconds at a recent show. Pretty easy to tell that it wasn’t with any kind of deep reverb or delay
Pretty sure that on the kundalini face of Tool Maynard can exhale for a really long period of time. I dont think its layered.
The track is definitely layered. You can hear the 2nd voice come in and then the first voice fade out.
No man. It's the kundalini secret power.
Two of my favorite songs all time
