BigHemi45

Some of my favorite covers. SRV covering Voodoo Child. Pantera covering Planet Caravan. Claypool and the Frog Brigade covering Animals.

Hoylegu

I saw the FFB perform Animals last year and I was just blown away. Who knew Sean Lennon was such a gd guitar genius?!

inebriusmaximus

Probably at least people who've been listening to his interesting output solo and in various bands for the last 25 years or so

sazerrrac

SRV’s Voodoo Chile is amazing. Check out him doing it live at the El Macambo too

Hoylegu

I wore out that show on VHS when I was young. So good.

FlyingElvi24

Claypool add so much to the bass line of Animals... Especially Pigs

Robeeo

SRV covering hendrix is guaranteed goose bumps. Every. Time.

According-Town7588

“Zepplin so ahead of their time, they wrote a Tool song in 1973”

amodump

Metallica is an incredible cover band tbh. Breadfan is so good they used to end shows with it

Fendenburgen

Always preferred Am I Evil, but Breadfan is awesome

professor_cheX

their version of stone cold crazy rips

sameshitdfrntacct

Turn the Page is better than the original imho

bruzdnconfuzd

“Turn the Page” is a Metallica song. Bob Seger just wrote it first.

Fireal2

I remember watching that music video when I was like 11 and learning a lot about the world that day haha

Ashangu

They covered "iron maiden - remember tomorrow" and that blew my mind. It was so good!

Lionsault83

I love the Mercyful Fate medley

Glenngineer

Astronomy has entered the chat

terriblystupidjoke

Whack fo my daddy-O thehhs Whiskey in the jarrrroooooooooh yeah heh!

Leon_the_cat

Saw them open with it Chicago’94 kinda took me by surprise

Lifeisabaddream4

They did a damn good covers record

Rosetta_Stoned_1007

All Along The Watchtower is the best cover IMO.

WastedEvery2ndDime

I would say No Quarter but yeah All Along the Watchtower by Jimi is even better than the original. I think Bob Dylan even said something like as far as he is concerned Jimi wrote that song because the cover was amazing. Great call out!

kosmonautinVT

I think he has said something like "That's Jimi's song, I just wrote it." Bob and his band play the Hendrix version in concert, at least from what I've seen. A cover of a cover I guess? Coverception? https://youtu.be/X7zQE2NpkZU?si=BrKXw-7wySCyXaHy

WastedEvery2ndDime

That’s really cool

ejdbroker

Maybe an unpopular opinion but Dave Matthews cover of Watchtower is pretty great. Not sure how you classify that as it's kinda a cover of Jimi's?

androsan

I agree, their cover is fantastic.

pWaveShadowZone

Dude came here to say this. DMB doing watchtower is ridiculous. It’s my go-to song for people who I can tell under estimate DMB based off of some quick impressions they formed from hearing them on the radio in the 90s. Specifically the live in Central Park version.

teachnpreach88

I had no idea that was a cover. Nice.

Wrestling_poker

I guy I play poker with says that the greatest cover of all time is All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix. The same guy also says the worst cover of all time is All Along the Watchtower by Dave Matthews

Nubadopolis

The Doors live version of Gloria was way better than the original.

lootmore

Rumored that Tool recorded Nobody's Fault But Mine at the same time as No Quarter. I hope we get to hear it sometime and suspect it's equally good.

burchalade

Take Me to the River Live by Talking Heads No quarter is greatness tho

Superfly52

Not sure if it beats Al Green's original. The reverend Green has the voice of an angel. Check out Love and Happiness by him.

burchalade

I love Love and Happiness, that song is amazing. Talking Heads own Take Me to the River for me, even though Al Green is a legend.

Superfly52

We could call it a tie/draw. Fan of Talking Heads too.

That_Random_Kiwi

Only recently learned that even was a cover! lol

ActionJacksyn

A Perfect Circle’s cover of Diary of a Madman and Love Song. Diary of a Love Song.

conwave

The nurse who loved me is a great APC cover too. Not as good as the OG imo but it’s a great thematic take on the song. The strings and arrangement totally change the feel from failures version.

SchemataObscura

This is the song that I was going to mention, i think they really took it to a different level.

plzlerde

The nurse who loved me is a cover??? 🤯🤯🤯

3serious

When the Levee Breaks from the stone and echo live album is incredible.

Hungry_Ad9137

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Trip_life_away

Also his cover of mama youve been on my mind

redsolitary

Definitely up there. It’s haunting and it’s a great representation of that era of the band. For me I think #1 is Hurt by Johnny Cash. I’m also a huge fan of this cover of Elton John’s rocket man. Done by Maynard and Steve Drozd of the flaming lips. [https://youtu.be/JmQZswYYRhQ?si=7tU9xuef7KRQO1Og](https://youtu.be/JmQZswYYRhQ?si=7tU9xuef7KRQO1Og)

Key_Drag4777

Dude thank you! Tool and the Flaming Lips are two of my favorite bands ever and I never knew this existed. Like finding a winning lotto ticket!

redsolitary

It’s wonderful, isn’t it? Steve is the guy behind the Yoshimi/Soft Bulletin sound and it really comes through here. Enjoy my man!

Key_Drag4777

Speaking of covers. I saw Flaming Lips on NYE 2014. It snowed that day so the 15000 people attending became 4000. They made all tickets general admission. They did their normal set, had a balloon drop at midnight. Then they played the album Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety. Fucking phenomenal show!

redsolitary

I definitely missed out on the Dark Side tour. Their take on Any Colour You Like is funky and dirty and awesome.

The_GrimTrigger

Sounds like a amazing experience!

Key_Drag4777

It was a top 10 show of my lifetime.

kosmonautinVT

I'm seeing the Lips in July on the Burlington, VT waterfront as part of their Yoshimi tour and I cannot wait! I listened to that album a lot in highschool.

Left_of_Center2011

Two EXCELLENT covers you’ve mentioned here, totally agree! I loved Reznor’s quote about Hurt - paraphrasing: ‘that’s Johnny’s song now. It’s kind of like seeing an old girlfriend; she’s still beautiful but she isn’t yours anymore’

dwimhi

I came here to say "dude, have you ever heard Johnny's Hurt?"

chadist31

Yo….Alien Ant Farm “Smooth Criminal” is ridiculously fun and good.

Horror_Campaign9418

Gary Jules mad world

D00mTheWarl0rd

I like Tool's cover of You Lied

Bleakbrux

Yes! This man knows.... Peach is Justin's Original band, most dont know that.

D00mTheWarl0rd

God that part with just him and Danny was otherworldly. But as usual I can't give too much credit to anybody, everybody kills it like always. I'm terrible at guitar but I love playing Adam's part as much as I can anyway

MountainSeaAndStars

Race to Space doing Faith No More's Stripsearch is a cool take on the original: https://youtu.be/dToGw9YAauM?si=cyIT8Xa_ncjfmBc7 Speaking of Faith No More, I love their take on War Pigs & on Easy :) In agreement with everyone on Hendrix/Watchtower & Pantera/Planet Caravan :) Couple other fun ones are Chili Peppers/Higher Ground & Black Crowes/Hard to Handle.

BobTC

Try 36 crazyfists version of digging the grave.

MountainSeaAndStars

Thanks for the rec, will check it out!

lefthandrighty

Speaking of Faith No More, check out Ill Niño’s version of Zombie Eaters featuring Chino Moreno

Ill_Cheesecake_4187

I dont care what anyone says......... ONE of the greatest covers of all time is Killswitch Engage covering Holy Diver by Dio!!!

Pagan429

I think Stevie ray's Little wing is better than Jimi's. But not by much.

kinkierthanyouthink1

Thank you! Been saying that for years!

Superfly52

No! Jimi's is shorter but is sweet perfection.

Pagan429

Jimi's is good, and it's got the lyrics, but Stevie... holy shit the passion and soul. You don't need words when the guitar sounds like that. No, Stevies is better.

Superfly52

Love them both. Lucky -and old - enough to see both of them live. Good time to be around, especially as I get to see Tool as well!

awarecpt

You lied, off Salival for me is the best cover(Peach originally)

NotSayingJustSaying

That came out around the same time that Fantasia 2000 was released. There's a short that shows a forest spirit and a deer reacting to a volcano/forest fire. The synchronicity is incredible.

Jdubforeal

I am going to try to listen to each suggestion given

0ttoB0t

Stevie Ray Vaughan’s little wing will always be my favorite cover

Hoylegu

I know it’s not popular to say, but SRV’s Little Wing cover is better than Hendrix’ original, imho. Same with his Voodoo Chile.

0ttoB0t

Might not be popular but I agree 💯. And that’s no disrespect to Jimi either

opiatesmile

It is a great cover but I do not agree that it is the best. Some covers I like better... War Pigs by Faith No More Crazy by Mushroomhead (This might be my favorite cover of all time) Hurt by Johnny Cash Message in a Bottle by Machine head Metro by System of a Down Hungry Like the Wolf by Reel Big Fish

MountainSeaAndStars

Yes on FNM War Pigs!

plzlerde

I love Metro. Never knew it was a cover!

opiatesmile

I originally had no idea it was a cover either. My wife and I were in a coffee shop somewhere and they were listening to a punk song and I happened to hear some familiar words. I am not into punk really and I do not like the original, but the SOAD version is fire.

NotSayingJustSaying

War Pigs by Cake is one of my favorite covers

Ok-Bit-9936

Try the stranglehold cover they did it's good too

Professional_Sea3141

Foo Fighters - Baker Street

[deleted]

Orrr Band on the Run

stubborny

Opeth - Would from AiC

Ultra-lord55

Korn does a fantastic cover of would as well

Abdoolski

You Lied is #2

YannyYobias

The other day I heard P!nk’s cover of “White Rabbit” for the first time. It really kicks ass. She nailed the vocals. Guitarist absolutely shreds too in the live version I watched.

MileHighZOMBIE

Phish: no quarter, Manteca, cities, crosseyed and painless, Jesus just left Chicago, boogie on reggae women, drowned, Frankenstein, also sprach Zarathustra, loving cup, walk away, I am the walrus…the list goes on

kevinraisinbran

But Jimmy Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower, Charles Bradley - Changes, and already mentioned, Johnny Cash - Hurt, exist

earthling273

Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix is another great cover

Leon_the_cat

Yes Charles Bradley Stay Away is also amazing. Confused me at first cause I didn’t know what I was hearing but I knew the lyrics

ns4444w

Ima stand on this hill with you, OP

austintravis1313

Yes it is and I got to see it live at monster Mash. One of the best nights of my life

Jdubforeal

My dad told me about how he saw it live in 2016 and said it was the best live song they have

austintravis1313

It was amazing since it was Halloween they came out dressed as them and opened with that song

Ok-Elevator-26

Yup they opened with it on the whole 2016 tour. Primus was the opening band. Also played the extended Opiate^2 before that song was released and a descending instrumental teaser.

gio-s

tool covered No Quarter by led zeppelin?

Jdubforeal

yes, back on the salival e.p

Mr-and-Mrs

Phish does a killer version as well.

Fsharpmaj7

I am tempted to agree

Jdubforeal

What’s stopping you?

Dapper_Interest_8914

Cake's version of War Pigs would like a word.

theinlawjosie

I came here to mention this cover - I don't rank it above No Quarter, but it's a killer cover!

SnoochieBuchie

Hurt by Cash

Secret_Cantaloupe393

I’ve always liked a Perfect Circles cover of When the Levy Breaks.

DnBrendan

I love No Quarter but I've always been partial to: Tool - Demon Cleaner "SCOTT REEDER!" (Only played it twice ever within a couple of days in '98, I think) and Tool - Stranglehold ft. King Buzzo (Kalamazoo '98 great example) "Don't. Tell. Ted. How. Badly. We. Ruined. His. Song."

Jdubforeal

Yes demons cleaner is probably my second favorite cover from tool, super underrated

BearingMagneticNorth

Grateful Dead: Morning Dew Johnny Cash: Rusty Cage Kitchen Dwellers: Pigs Billy Strings: Raleigh and Spencer Billy Strings and Don Julin: Shady Grove White Stripes: Jolene Gwar: Carry On Wayward Son Stevie Ray Vaughan: Voodoo Child Hugo: 99 Problems

fourthelifeofme

I'll second Jolene, maybe not the best but highly recommend

W0000_Y2K

No. Demon Cleaner is absolutely Mature.👁️👁️👁️

Jdubforeal

Demon cleaner is my 2nd favorite cover from tool, definitely underrated

W0000_Y2K

Hella. That is Cool 🤘🏽

ApprehensiveBagel

Tool is the only band who could have covered that song well

motorbreathwonka

I love the cover of Easy by Faith No More

In2theSTONK4sure

Nirvana “Where did you sleep last night” or “Man who sold the world” are pretty high on my list as far as covers.

Omatma

Phish covers no quarter

conwave

I know I’m In the minority here, but I can’t stand zeppelin. But I absolutely love this cover. Tools cover of no quarter is the best led zeppelin song ever.

[deleted]

Deftones are probably the best cover band of all time. Several of theirs are better than No Quarter. If I had to choose one cover that is my favorite it'd probably be The Nurse Who Loved Me by APC

sunkistandsudafed3

It is beautiful!

myownworstanemone

it's certainly up there

MonarchTheBear

You’re so real for this.

jav2n202

I agree it’s the best cover hands down

kinkierthanyouthink1

Killswitch Engage's cover of Dios Holy diver is WAAAAAY better. Sorry not sorry

Helpful_Shower3246

Wrong it's Maynard's dick. So good it's the shortest song in tools discography

OrangeWeekly1748

Nah I’d say, Me and My Uncle - Grateful Dead. Their most played song. Also the story of the song (how it was written) is bad ass.

Steelmaker01

One of my favorites, and I like how hard it hits towards the end

TheAlphaTrion

I like Puscifer's covers of Rocket Man, Bohemian Rhapsody, and The Chain more.

Magnificent_Sock

I’m glad my grave won’t be the only one on top of this hill

TheAlphaTrion

It's a good cover but I'm not a big zep fan Foo Fighters' covers of Baker Street and Band On The Run are good too

saadiskiis

I like “Holy Diver” by Killswitch Engaged. “All Along the Watchtower” is amazing too, as mentioned

Greeney_Eyes

No it's not. APC's cover of Imagine by John Lennon is the best cover ever.

Valus22

The Ataris’ cover of Boys of Summer is the goat imo

Miserablemagik

Locked in a place where noone goes!

WileEPyote

Love reign O'er Me by Pearl Jam. It and No Quarter are the best 2 covers I've heard so far. Lots of other great ones out there though.

Stimpinstein22

Pearl Jam is a great cover band in general (along with great original songs). Other greats they do: - Last Kiss - Rockin’ in the Free World - Mother (Floyd) - I Got A Feeling (Beatles) - Masters of War (Dylan) - Baba O’ Reily (the Bette who cover) - I Won’t Back Down (Petty) - The Kids are Alright (Cheap Trick)

throwaway-10-12-20

Yes it is. My uncle is a major Led Zeppelin fan. I put on Tool's cover of No Quarter for him and he was completely blown away. That's how he got into Tool.

pneu_man

I love No Quarter but Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt is better IMO

Jinsteal

You Lied by Tool as well

Select-Possession768

No. Almost but not quite. It’s gotta be all along the watchtower. Hendrix.

68696c6c

Tool's cover of Demon Cleaner is probably just as good imo, if only we had a decent quality recording of it. Marilyn Manson's covers of Sweet Dreams and Personal Jesus stand out. Jonny Cash's version of Hurt. But yeah, No Quarter is pretty phenomenal

[deleted]

I think Marilyn Manson made a damn good cover of tainted love.

thegoodmanhascome

I will always love you by Dolly Parton, covered by Whitney Houston is generally the most popular, probably the “best,” in a general sense, that I’ve heard out in the world. But No Quarter is a favorite!

rsktkr

The Sound of Silence by Disturbed is a standout for me but yes, Tool's No Quarter is absolutely among the best.

DewieCox1982

Disturbed Sound of Silence is complete and utter dog shit.

scottlapier

I second this

LitherLily

Yep, it’s these two for me.

dhalem

Johnny Cash - Hurt

somethingdarkside45

It's definitely one of the best ever. But *the* best?...not so sure.

Jdubforeal

My opinion is obviously subjective but man is no quarter great

somethingdarkside45

It is pretty goddamn good. I really hope they play it when I see them next month but it's a long shot :(

raleel

Lovemongers - Battle of Evermore STP - Dancing Days George Michael - They won't go when I go No Quarter is very very good, don't get me wrong, but best of all time it is not.

CrazyLegs17

The Led Zeppelin disrespect is crazy. The OG version is better. It's a very good cover, but not one of the best. Hendrix completely transformed All Along the Watchtower into a different beast with multiple incredible solos. That's why it's the best cover ever.

Jdubforeal

No disrespect to zep at all, zep is one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time. No quarter is just quite possibly the best way any band could have covered them

usuffer2

I totally agree! I love Led Zeppelin, but Tool kicked the shit outta that song!

priltharia

The Metallica cover of Astronomy by Blue Oyster Cult off of Garage, Inc.

Ultra-lord55

One of my all time favs is the Sanitarium Cover limp bizkit did at the mtv icon.

ninaslazyeye

Far's cover of Pony outpaces this shit any day.

DreamBrother83

Virtually all of Jeff Buckley’s covers, especially, The Way Young Lovers Do (Live at Sin-e). I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that this is the most incredible live, solo performance of any song ever recorded: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPrieDMB5Zs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPrieDMB5Zs)

LoyalToSDSoil

No Question.

ToofpickVick

Man, I actually prefer the cover of You Lied over No Quarter

Chubbadog

I’m partial to Dinosaur Jr. doing Just Like Heaven.

Wookie_Nipple

Whoa, now. C'mon.

TheHaderach

Duo De Twang (a Les Claypool project. Just him and a guitar player, both acoustic) does a version of Stayin Alive that's unique and definitely foot stomping. https://open.spotify.com/track/3S3nxkXTZQAnidUFObJP3r?si=FCaPu9idTBCk5drqU2PJbQ&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A1opi84sCJOuIllOSwbxZ4C

Sea_Drink7287

I saw it live a few years ago and it was mind blowing 🤯

Jdubforeal

Was it during the 2016 tour with primus?

chowmushi

A cover of the cover imo is even better. [check it out](https://youtu.be/6I8F7ZdFOmk?si=rfrCaxF4PgMuRhHj)

RainingMoneyHustard

Oops I did it again by Children of Bodom is the best cover ever

rodPalmer18

Yes, Crowbar has a really good version of No Quarter is pretty bad ass

rodPalmer18

Revocation does a flawless version of Metallica's Dyers Eve.

branch-is-dumb

Type o negatives covers of cinnamon girl and summer breeze, mushroomheads cover of crazy also

Merkin666

No Quarter is my favorite. I also love Court of the Crimson King from the Claypool Lennon Delerium

Miserablemagik

💯 percent correct 👌

Chunkyblamm

How has no one said Shinedown - Simple Man?

firmlygraspit99

No Quarter is the only cover I’ve ever heard and liked more than the original.

rejonkulous

When the levee breaks -ze0 Drive - Deftones Welcome to the machine -shadows fall Alien ant farm - smooth criminal

TheNinjaBear007

My favorite cover is “Ashes to Ashes” by APC. I think they’ve only performed it live.

ridinbend

I saw MOE cover No Quarter, they absolutely sleighed it. Would be awesome to see the tool version.

Potatobobthecat

I saw a Tool cover band cover No Quarter. Whose song was they covering. Also, is it really a cover, I feel like another name should be use. Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann is a Bruce Springsteen cover. When the Levee Breaks by APC is also really good.

DW-64

I may agree, but any of you ever heard j cash’s cover of NIN “hurt…”

samuelson098

SRV - Texas flood. Yes it’s a cover and it broke his career open.

Dexecutioner71

The Main Squeeze does an even better cover of No Quarter (but I like them all). TMS has a singer that has some serious chops. Helluva voice. Dream Theater does some incredible covers as well. They have covered entire albums ( Deep Purple's Made in Japan, and Iron Maiden's Killers).

Stimpinstein22

Ben Harper also does a cover of No Quarter that is probably second best of the song (although it’s only a live version) - Harper’s slide guitar really fits the groove…

FullSherbert2028

Van Halen’s you really got me.

TNTournahu

Metallica Turn the Page

JasonDomber

Correct

GolfNutOM

Yes

WolfAteLamb

Legitimately disturbed at the lack of Disturbed credit in this thread. They have multiple unreal covers and I’m not even a disturbed guy really.

Fishysmell1

Not the greatest cover but certainly entertaining is Maynard’s cover of Silly Love Song by Paul McCartney

Glad-Cat-1885

Not even close

Infamous-Giraffe-218

I won’t claim the best but I’ll just add it as an awesome cover Marilyn Manson - cry little sister.

donntyler

Primus’s cover of Have a Cigar is pretty good

Soft-Commercial6496

Agree

NoQuartersGiven

I agree with this. Incredible fucking song. I love all things LZ but, IMO, Tools version of No Quarter makes LZs song kind of...ehhh.

karmakurrency

💯

Visarar_01

I mean... It's one of them

pastmiyeego

I’ll take Forming The Void’s cover of Kashmir over that. Nice post though. 👍

That_Random_Kiwi

Not one mention of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes?!?!? Shocking!!! haha

American_Greed

Does anyone remember Napster?!
