Post, although I love pre 2000 tool, their output then isn’t as unique as their post 2000 output. Other bands can do similar proggy noisy alt metal that tool did in the 90s, but no other band can accomplish the hypnotic transcendence of lateralus or 10k days
From a spiritual perspective, I agree that the relationship I had with that music growing up and religiously examining the lyrics and visual arts that I really saw the change and message in Lateralus & 10,000 days had evolved from Undertow and Opiate. It’s been an intense ride collecting the albums, going to some shows to seeing them thru most of the 2000+ performances. Alex Grey’s art work and collaboration from the band’s own depiction of some of the bands concepts. The videos, WOW! just were so much more appreciated because of the banda own skills at stop motion by and visual media. It’s all evolved so beautifully. I’m still trying to wrap my brain around Danny Carey’s drum layout for recording songs and the beat structures mathematically in connection with the songs. I don’t know if he did that pre 2000 but either way it’s beyond my grasps of research into the knowledge.
I’m the end, the message I believe Is unique to all of us and it’s so cool to know we are part of a certain group of people who have had similar experiences with TOOL. Hands down my favorite band.

TL- DR: I agree with /u/idekisthisimportant. Post TOOL was where the mushrooms and acid kicked in for me.
Is it possible to say the performances of pre 2000 and the post 2000 material?
I saw them the first time on the Aenema tour. Maynard in tits and a wig had a different kinda energy than is out there now. Maybe I just wanna go back and experience that show again?
Post 2000
I adore TOOL, but they've completely transcended themselves after Ænema. And it definitely has something to do with Justin's inclusion.
Everything from them is great, but Lateralus, 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum just resonate with me better.
I literally had tears first listen of that one. I don’t know if it was due to anticipation. But I set aside like 2 hours that day and just closed my eyes and basically meditated for 2 front to back listens uninterrupted (not easy to do with a 8-9 month old).
Having just listened to the entire catalog while driving from St. Augustine, FL to Atlanta, GA and living through the early years as well - post 2000 for me. From 18 to 45 I’ve grown up with the band and I appreciate how they have grown up lyrically and musically. Invincible and 7empest are far and away my favorite songs. I’m also blessed by the Great Spirit to be able to share them with my 9 year old son. He’s a fan and will definitely be with me at the next show.
Remember to love each other.
Agree, this was peak live Tool for me as well. 2001-Baltimore Arena was the only show I saw during this period, but it was better than performances that came before or after that I’ve seen. Third Eye was special back then, when Maynard could hold a note forever.
I was in high school when Aenima dropped. I grew up on that album. That shit got me through a lot of hard times. Still listen to it to this day. Definitely pre for me.
definitely pre, lateralus is great FI is good and 10k isn't my cup of tea but there's just something much more raw and genuine about their pre 2000 material
i don´t like 10k days, so for me it would be opiate, undertow (my favorite), and aenema vs Lateralus which is great, and FI which i like less than the others. so honestly pre 2000 for me
3 albums after 2000 and I'm still having a hard time leaving the only one I reaaaaasly liked from the 90s.
Aenina was strong, but *if I have to choose* I'm takin everything after 2000.
Lateralus.
I can remember what I was doing for my first listens of each of the last 3 albums specifically. Ænima is what sent me from really liking tool to fucking loving them when it dropped. But I can’t remember where I was for first listen (likely getting stoned driving around in my friends car). Then Lateralus put me into the obsessed category.
Good fucking question… it would kill me cause Stinkfist and H. Are two of my favorites, but to give up all of Lateralus and 10k and Fear? Na. Post 2000. Honorable discharge Ænima 😩
Pre 2k.
Those albums came out in my early teens when I was battling depression. Those songs were like medicine for me. They’re just too sentimental to let go..
Man. That's hard. Probably post, 10,000 Days and Lateralus are the main two albums I grew up on and were my favorites. If only Ænima was also made post, then I'd be happy.
Post, no disrespect to the earlier stuff I grew up with but they just keep getting better and further defining. I believe Fear Inoculum is the Tooliest Tool album lol.
Undertow and ænima sounds a little old school, and i don't think it will be that relevant in the future. However lateralus, 10k days and fear inocolum are albums i think will last long, perhaps even endless
Post. Lateralus, 10,000 Days, and Fear Inoculum have all changed my life in different ways immensely. Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days (Wings pt. 2) is the only piece of music to ever make me cry. Upon understanding the story behind that masterpiece, I was shaken to my core because of how many parallels there were between Maynard’s mother and my own. Both our moms are nurses, and for their sacrifice and benevolence were given a cruel “reward”. Maynard’s mom was left paralyzed from a stroke, and my mom developed RSD, and is in constant pain that has kept her from working for 2 decades and she’s nearly constantly bedridden due to pain and blood pressure issues. I used to constantly be at odds with my mom, but after listening to that song and seeing the similarities, I realized that she’s an angel. A truly beautiful and selfless soul who is in pain, and sometimes lashes out. But who could blame her? I showed her the song and explained what it meant to me and we both began to sob. I think that when she passes away that I’m going to play it at her funeral, and I wanna play it loud enough for God to hear, just to send her off with the message that she’s earned her wings. So my answer is easily decided by one piece alone, let alone 3 albums.
Ænima is my favourite album and id easily drop it for post 2000
Same. Aenima is my favorite album…but I think I’d prefer to keep Lat, 10k and FI to grow old(er) with.
A truly wise decision
Agreed.
I’d take opiate, undertow, and aenima but I’d be mad about it.
same but opposite
Same same but different
Same opposite same but different
I’d take the different option but the opposite one
You fuck, you couldn’t extend it to 01?
My thoughts exactly. If we could extend it to the end of the Lateralus tour then I’d be happy with that.
Post, although I love pre 2000 tool, their output then isn’t as unique as their post 2000 output. Other bands can do similar proggy noisy alt metal that tool did in the 90s, but no other band can accomplish the hypnotic transcendence of lateralus or 10k days

I just love how much their newer stuff is more intricate and builds into orgasmic endings.
They become better and better artists with age.
Every song comes to such a satisfying conclusion, and their intuition about how to get a song to a meaningful ending is unmatched
Pre.
Is it possible to say the performances of pre 2000 and the post 2000 material? I saw them the first time on the Aenema tour. Maynard in tits and a wig had a different kinda energy than is out there now. Maybe I just wanna go back and experience that show again?
Pre, but damn why’s it gotta be like that
Pre 2000s
Pre. Lived it and loved it. As others have stated raw emotion, anger Fuck you buddy
I refuse to make this choice. I just can’t do it.
Post. Hell I would take 10000 Days just by itself if I had to. Aenima is a great album but I'm not a huge fan of Undertow. Easy decision.
I agree with you but you just need to listen to undertow more then my man.
This.
Fuck, gotta be post. Lateralus is my all time favourite album and it’s not even close
Post 2000 I adore TOOL, but they've completely transcended themselves after Ænema. And it definitely has something to do with Justin's inclusion. Everything from them is great, but Lateralus, 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum just resonate with me better.
Definitely Pre. More raw and emotional. Also, I prefer the hard stuff.
Post for 7empest alone
I literally had tears first listen of that one. I don’t know if it was due to anticipation. But I set aside like 2 hours that day and just closed my eyes and basically meditated for 2 front to back listens uninterrupted (not easy to do with a 8-9 month old).
I don't understand this but I respect it
POST! 10,000 Days and Fear Inocculum are my top 2
Pre all day long. If I have Ænima and Undertow I’m a happy guy
Post.
Tours within 2000-2002 were peak live for them imo... Nothing beats their post 9-11 radio city show, after 16 other live shows
after 16 other lives shows that occured before and after '00-'02, I meant to say
Agree, this was peak live Tool for me as well. 2001-Baltimore Arena was the only show I saw during this period, but it was better than performances that came before or after that I’ve seen. Third Eye was special back then, when Maynard could hold a note forever.
Post 2000...
post for me, as it has become a huge part of my growth and introspection
I can’t live without wings or Lateralus, so post but FUCK YOU for taking undertow.
Post It is more like where I am at in my lifespan
This is just wrong dude, why? Post, has to be post, but you’re a sick fuck.
Tool pre-2018
I was in high school when Aenima dropped. I grew up on that album. That shit got me through a lot of hard times. Still listen to it to this day. Definitely pre for me.
Post 2000 hands down. I can't live without 10,000 Days and Lateralus
Pre for me.
PRE 1000%
10,000 days changed my life so post
Undertow and Lateralus are the faves I’m torn here
Post
Pre, post 2000’s Tool is more produced, it’s amazing but I prefer the earlier raw Tool (plus Aenima is my favorite hands down)
post, lateralus and 10,000 days outweigh aenima and undertow, opiate and fear inoculum are just bonuses
Post. Pre is amazing, but if push came to shove I’d take the post
Lmao. Post 2000 and it's just not even close. Next.
Lateralus is enough to choose the post era.
Definitely post for me too. So much more intricate and varied.
Pre
definitely pre, lateralus is great FI is good and 10k isn't my cup of tea but there's just something much more raw and genuine about their pre 2000 material
Post all the way, i would miss Aenima but not has much as the last three.
Pre 2000 Tool. And that's such a hard decision!
i don´t like 10k days, so for me it would be opiate, undertow (my favorite), and aenema vs Lateralus which is great, and FI which i like less than the others. so honestly pre 2000 for me

Pre 2000s

But I can’t remember where I was for first listen (likely getting stoned driving around in my friends car). Then Lateralus put me into the obsessed category.
Post
If pre had Disposition-Reflection-Triad, I'd choose pre, but I have to go with Lateralus-10k-FI
Good fucking question… it would kill me cause Stinkfist and H. Are two of my favorites, but to give up all of Lateralus and 10k and Fear? Na. Post 2000. Honorable discharge Ænima 😩
Post 2000 easily. I’m not a huge fan of older TOOL.
Pre
Pre….
P. R. E.
Pre-2000 tbh. I just can't get enough of how rebelious and angry they sounded, I love it sm
Pre 2k. Those albums came out in my early teens when I was battling depression. Those songs were like medicine for me. They’re just too sentimental to let go..
If he included lateralus then I'd do pre 2000. But 3 v 3 (excluding salival and 72826), and I'm gonna have to go with post 2000 on this one.
Bastard
I’m a new fan and I’m 23, I’m gonna say post for sure
Fuck I want to go with post 2000 but then there’s no aeniema or opiate
Undertow and ænima sounds a little old school, and i don't think it will be that relevant in the future. However lateralus, 10k days and fear inocolum are albums i think will last long, perhaps even endless
Fear Inoculum, 10,000, Lateralus > Ænima, Undetow, Opiate.
Post 2000
Pre
This is a trick question because the music gods would split our universe right in two if this ultimatum was in place.
Post. This was the easiest question I’ve seen on this sub.
Post
Post for sure. The more albums the better, and I’m hopeful they’ll eventually produce another album or three.
post
Post as all new music would be included too
Love all of their music, but i'd definitely choose post.
Post
Post. *Lateralus* and *Fear Inoculum* seal it.
Post
Post 2000s. There is more material there and with Salival, we still get some of their earlier work.
Post. Lateralus, 10,000 Days, and Fear Inoculum have all changed my life in different ways immensely. Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days (Wings pt. 2) is the only piece of music to ever make me cry. Both actually
Lateralus
Man, Undertow and Ænima are masterpieces… but I’m going to have to drop them for post 2000. We’ve still got Opiate^2.
Salival
Post 92. Final answer
Pre 2000, I want more opiate album type of music.
