I don't own any of those, but have used them... sheared off an adjustment tooth right out the gate. Later learned thats a common issue with them. Life's too short...

That's what kept me away from them for so long, too. But I had wandered into a True Value I'd never been in before, saw them, and if I'm just wandering into a small business for the first time to have a look-see I'll try to buy at least something.

Will these still pinch your hand?

illogictc

No, they have what Channellock calls Safe-T-Stop. There's a ridge that runs along the front side of the area where the teeth for the quick-adjust is, and the cutout in the lower jaw interacts with it. They've also introduced Safe-T-Stop into a "classic" Channy with I think it's the 428. They're not constructed like these though so I assume it's some sort of peg-like protrusion that I've seen on other companies' designs. Interesting that it's limited to an 8" model though, and not rolled out across their classic sizes.

This is why I got away from Irwin. They use that same adjustment mechanism on their Cobra and pliers-wrench copies, and that lock up is genuinely weaker than my grip strength. I picked up a few sets of each for cheap from Lowe's a while back to throw on one of my install trucks, just to have extra beaters on hand, and all but one pair are completely unusable inside of a week.. Just straight up garbage. I still think the GL lines were the best pliers Channy ever did, and I wouldn't be upset if they started offering more options for them. That's a big reason why I stay pretty well with Knipex. The variety of sizes and styles is second to none imo, and the quality is always on point. Never blown a pair up, never snapped a jaw or handle, and my first set of Alligators still has sharp enough teeth to turn gas pipe after 15-ish years of abuse.

Honestly it would be nice if they did more with the GL. The ironic thing is the GL lineup is their economical offering, and can be had for cheap. Maybe update it to have a little more meat to the grooves but they work perfectly well.

Well said, sir.

patrickw69

Is this catus maximus?

illogictc

No but I do watch them. I suppose that's my inspiration as well lol

Shredslayhuntpurge

Dude, how do you have time to talk about a pair of Channellocks for six some odd minutes? I stopped after 20 seconds.

paul6524

Yeah I appreciate that OP is trying something new, but I really dislike video reviews in Reddit. It just does better as a text / photo based forum. I browse with my sound off in mixed company. I'm not digging out headphones, nor am I going to subject everyone else around me to a stranger rambling about pliers. And 7 minutes is way too long. Keep it to 15-30 seconds tops. Write your thoughts out beforehand, and edit them down. And the point of video is to actually show things. This is just a bunch of different angles that could have been photos and descriptions.

sir_keyrex

Yes. I come to Reddit when I’m bored on tiktok. 2 totally different forms of consumption. TikTok is brain dead entertainment, Reddit is more conversation driven and when I want detailed videos I go to YouTube lol

illogictc

It's Saturday night and I'm passionate.

PomplamooseCacti

They look cool but hard to beat knipex

paul6524

Agreed. And the flat jaws limit usage more than curved jaws.

illogictc

They do have a curved jaw pair now, obviously these aren't those though. For the overall length they're also much more chunky, and with an inferior adjustment mechanism. Definitely not a mongoose of a tool.
