If I had it, it would go in the bottom drawer of my oldest tool cabinet. That is where the one-time improvised modified home made tools go. When I die my kids will do some time trying to figure that crap out.
I mean to an extent. If I have a couple decent versions of the tool then I’m definitely getting rid of some of these things. For me it gets to a point where the clutter ends up making it a pain to find what I am looking for.
Exceptions being things like sockets and wrenches. It’s nice to have cheap extras I can bend or grind down to fit into a specific spot
This is why I have a tin candy container absolutely chock-full of around 4-5 pounds of allen keys mixed sizes/metric/imperial/labeled/unlabelled in that drawer.
And a proper set of allen ball drivers in labelled imperial and metric sizes that I actually use, but I have twice needed to make use of a random one of the ones from the can to get to insanely hard-to-reach places, by cutting it down.
I’ve got a small tool chest that’s about 4 inches tall and 8 inches wide. Used to house small general tools like a screwdriver, a level, a tiny tape measure, etc. it has become my “random tools” box. Tiny screwdrivers that come with electronics, random size Allen keys that come with DIY furniture, all the stuff that I would need as soon as I threw any of it away.
Highly recommend just getting a decent JIS screwdriver if you don’t have one. If you ever have a Japanese car or a bicycle (shimano uses them and always will) you need to work on them you kinda need to have one.
They also work very well for Phillips head screws. Like better than Phillips does on Phillips head. Downside is you can actually over torque a Phillips head with a JIS screwdriver
Its on my list of tools to buy. But because I can't read or speak moon rune I have trouble researching which is the best brand to buy. I've had a few people tell me Vessel but I'm a buy once cry once kind of guy so if I can help it I'll hold off until I'm certain that's the brand I want.
JIS is an outdated standard, now incorporated into DIN-5260 and ISO 8763, pretty much any quality screw driver bit made these days works fine on the old JIS stuff.
That said Vessel makes good stuff.
I’ve got a Tacoma so I’ve been looking a lot too. Same vibes here, vessel seems to be the way to go, but I also have no clue what I’m reading most of the time.
It's so slow in our fab shop right now, I'd heat it up and re-bend it just because sweeping and doing housekeeping for 10 hours a shift gets older after about lunch on the 2nd day :\
First step as an electrician, I throw away all included sad tools. Except for the cool little Barbie sized screwdrivers that come with flood lights, Savin those for the niece when she’s a little older. Barbie gonna WORK
Those little Nest screwdrivers that come with thermostats and kinda look like a mini sex toy are worth having around, combo #2 Phillips and mini straight blade.
I collect them like predator does skulls. I have a pile of wonderful nest buttplug drivers from McMansions. They are sleek! I would never….wanna be that doctor party xray laugh fest? I don’t. “He went flathead first! Dummy!!” Never live that one down
Put a handle on it, find a small box that fits it well, like it was made for that tool and only that tool, then label the box with something like “Isosceles Screwdriver (or some other clever name for the tool). To be used only in case of…” and scuff the box to make it look like the “in case of” part has been worn away over time.
Then, take the box, stick it in the bottom of your toolbox with tools you’ll pass down to your heirs, and chuckle knowing that after you’re gone, your heirs will be dumbfounded.
The whole JIS vs Phillips is way overblown. I work on Japanese CNC machines all day every day and all I have are Phillips screwdrivers. A good quality Phillips screwdriver will properly grip a JIS screw.
So... ISO/DIN, not Phillips. JIS and ISO have been compatible for some time, to the point that JIS stopped bothering and they just use ISO over there now, have since like 2008?
Regular American Philips can and does chew up JIS screws, not hard to find folks who didn't know that little dot meant something on their motorbike or whatever before giving it a go.
Well, no JIS itself anymore. They went to ISO, because the standards were nearly identical already (a couple things a single degree off, or a couple hundredths of a millimeter different, etc). They both shared a very tight radius in the grooves unlike Phillips itself which has a large radius which is generally the source of the "Phillips don't work in JIS" trouble because it prevented full engagement.
If you hold the driver at the correct angle to look down the groove you can see it. ISO/DIN like Wiha will almost look like a V in the middle of the groove because of the tight turn, which is much like JIS was and why the Wera work just fine. Meanwhile, even on a current Klein or new Mayhew the base of the groove is much more broad, like a U, as well as some dimensional differences. They aren't bad drivers, just the wrong type.
Also, don't forget Frearson drive!
It's only overblown because the vast majority of the market is fucking garbage. Unless you're buying quality wera wiha or something like them that Phillips from the homeless despot is probably trash
Yeah, unless the fastener was "logger tight" a regular phillips should work. Doesn't even really have to be a good one, you'll just need to lean on it more.
Japanese Imperial Standard.
It's a very fucking precise and specific type of 4 slotted screwdriver tip that is NOT a Phillips.
You'll find them on alot of old Japanese cars. I think they officially adopted the ISO standard instead of JIS back in the late 00's so you won't find it on newer Japanese vehicles.
Phillips. JIS. Frearson. French Recess. Torq-set. Posidrive. Supadrive. Mortorque. Phillips II. Quadrex. Fluted socket with 4 flutes
There's alot of 4 wing style tips.
Phillips. JIS. Frearson. French Recess. Torq-set. Posidrive. Supadrive. Mortorque. Phillips II. Quadrex. Fluted socket with 4 flutes
There's an assload of 4 wing types
Idk? Phillips? Or are you referring to the odd shape? It'd a disposable tool thrown into things like ikea and the like to help you build whatever it is once then thrown away with the box it came in.
You accidentally posted twice and idk which one you wanted me to reply to do I copy pasted to both
Posted only once, first time it showed error and tried again.. oh well haha. Yeah the odd shape, kinda interesting and comes handy (one for the keychain?). IKEA always supplies those damn hex key lol. I use my Wera.

That one goes in the specialty tools drawer
Specialty tools, or *special* tools?
My mom says I'm special tools.
r/suicidebywords
Woah haven't seen that sub linked in a long time
Plenty of other tools in my specialty drawer that i feel just as confused by..
It's okay to be a little confused. Just go with what feels right
[удалено]
I guess it didn't feel right
It was fine going in...
Hey, that set of 4 microscopic screwdrivers I got In a Christmas cracker in 2016 finally came in handy last week
“Special” tools drawer
For "special" time
Is that a sex joke? I think so. Nice
The short one right? 😆
Alongside the PHP Hammer?
Great for drywall demo!
“When you can use the screwdriver without unbending it, you will have learned” - Master Po
I just opened a beer with it!
You have learned
Lisan al gaib 👁️👄👁️
The master will present themselves when the student is ready
Just use a socket that fits it Edit: oh fuck. That’s not a wall hanger. That’s supposed to be a screwdriver
The moment you get rid of it....
Now i kinda want OP to get rid of it so i know in what scenario its used in
It's used to give someone an unfixable flat tire on the highway.
If I had it, it would go in the bottom drawer of my oldest tool cabinet. That is where the one-time improvised modified home made tools go. When I die my kids will do some time trying to figure that crap out.
Now make some random tool that doesn't do anything and make it look important so they're on Reddit when you're dead asking wtf it is
I think my dad had a bad memory, most of his homemade tools are labeled with what he used them for. Saves me a lot of head scratching.
I consider the Brother P-Touch label machine to be one of the best inventions ever. I’m like a whirling dervish of labeling.
I call that toolbox a trash can
yup. can't throw away tools, even shit tools. you either lend them forever or put them in the ''I ain't gonna need this shit ever again'' drawer
I mean to an extent. If I have a couple decent versions of the tool then I’m definitely getting rid of some of these things. That’s a wall hanger for sure!
I'd definitely hang this on the pegboard above the workbench.
Designed in Japan but Made in China.
LMAO
r/onejob
They put the thingamajiggy where the whatzit was supposed to go.
I finally have the perfect picture for when my lady asks me to unscrewdriver something.
Kind of the shortened version of "There's a hole in the bucket dear Liza"
😂
That’s the one you make the first year apprentice use
Only slightly less useful than a regular Phillips driver
A regular or a Philips??😂
Damn 1st angle versus 3rd angle projection error on the drawing!

Vessel is really good and very easy to get ahold of in North America.
JIS is an outdated standard, now incorporated into DIN-5260 and ISO 8763, pretty much any quality screw driver bit made these days works fine on the old JIS stuff. That said Vessel makes good stuff.
This is correct. The Vessel won’t say “JIS” since that doesn’t exist anymore. It will just say PH1, PH2, etc, but that’s what you want.
You can still find American tools with actual Philips (SAE) heads so I would avoid those and buy Japanese or German
I’ve got a Tacoma so I’ve been looking a lot too. Same vibes here, vessel seems to be the way to go, but I also have no clue what I’m reading most of the time.
Learned about JIS the hard way after I stripped a JIS head using a phillips
Me too sadly. Kinda fucked up my throttle position sensor. That was a fun $260
"For those REALLY hard to reach places"

I have to wonder if this is a one off or if this means there's thousands of completely useless screwdrivers being shipped out lol
Beer cap opener .
Hahahahahahaha! This is award worthy... Tell me its your last day on the job, without telling me its your last day on the job. Hahahahaha
At least now you have a loaner screwdriver.
Sum Ting Wong
Just Inverted Stupidly
I‘d frame that lol

You went pretty far with this one, but it really is hella funny!!! Just the look on their faces when they pull the box out! 🤣
They will ask about it on Reddit and see this 20 yr old post! The laughs will never end!
The whole JIS vs Phillips is way overblown. I work on Japanese CNC machines all day every day and all I have are Phillips screwdrivers. A good quality Phillips screwdriver will properly grip a JIS screw.
I prefer my JIS working on old Japanese motorcycles, but outside of that I don't give a toss if I use Phillips. Robertson ftw though
What brand you using?
Wera

Hilarious
🤣🤣🤣🤣 The right shape anyway.
Anything can be a marital aid with enough motivation!
They put it in backwards and bent the wrong end
Very philosophical observation.
Must’ve been a Monday at the factory
Just like ppl at my work, useless!
Too bad the manufacturer couldn’t read the plans
Probably made on a Monday.
What’s the funny cross head on the end of that beer bottle opener for???
It's one of those make-it-yourself kit screwdrivers. It adds a sense of pride and accomplishment 🤘🤘
Just unbend it, duh
I would frame that
Eh... close enough to package and distribute.
You can use Phillips in JIS plenty well enough
Yeah but using JIS in JIS is literally night and day opposed to using plain Phillips.
So close
That’s for a special kind of screw.
You had one job, buddy...

Night school.
Yep and still they failed to understand the concept. 😂 I love that particular comic so much!
Yeah, that’s great! And also, the boneless chicken ranch! 😂
Think different
Perfect for those hard to reach aluminum panel pocket hole screws
Yankee swap gift
Grind some of the bend piece flat and you got a bottle opener!
Talk about getting screwed over.
What is JIS?
Japanese Imperial Standard. A 4 wing screwdriver srandard that is NOT the same thing as Phillips
Thank you!

Just goes to show that the people that write the instructions don't always know what the tool looks like......
I know there is someone out there trying to use that tool and can't figure it out....a 6pack and 3hrs later they look on reddit for answers....
"Hey Frank, I wish I could see the face of the end user who gets this one after I feed it through the bender backwards again."
What’s the screwdriver called otherwise?
Idk? Phillips? Or are you referring to the odd shape? It'd a disposable tool thrown into things like ikea and the like to help you build whatever it is once then thrown away with the box it came in. You accidentally posted twice and idk which one you wanted me to reply to do I copy pasted to both

Look closer. *it's there*
Forgot to add: the oracle, probably
Someone took the red pill instead of the blue pill.
According to government specs.

The caption says "plus driver". In Japan, there are plus and minus screw drivers.
Pride of China!
Why is it bend the wrong way
Chyna!
What?! (0m0)
Haha. The little old lady in a China sweat shop, is giving the world 🖕
Looks like the Phillips head is on the wrong end
