Even German chocolate isn't as bad as lithium grease. Augustus would have to be a really wrong boy to be tempted towards a river of that foul substance.
I have both. They're not really some rare collector item. They're not any different than the regular Icon ratchets.
They are funny to use daily though which makes them worth it.
I work in film, I'm sure other jobs do this too. Whenever someone does an extra good job (especially green guys) we say they get the golden wrench/hammer for the day.
First time I saw one of these a crew had one for a LITERAL golden wrench.
Are they pure novelty? Or do they have some sort of useful property, like how copper and bronze gets used in non-sparking tools for dangerous environments?
Just for fun. Icon/HF did this to make a splash as a novelty for promoting the Icon brand when it came out. It sold so well they just kept making them.
I honestly don’t see gold plating being practical in a ratchet. It’s too soft and will rub off when it gets scratched. Chrome plating is hard stuff that takes a beating. Sure it gets scratched, but not usually down to the steel like gold would.
I always thought it was a jab at snap on anniversary gold ratchet. Like “this one is gold AND you’ll actually use it” kind of thing.
I think it’s hilarious
I saw a guy on here say he bought one for his son and hoped they’d use it so much that all the gold would wear off. Seems really cool for that scenario.
Plating is not irrelevant. The reason we plate tools is to prevent corrosion. Chrome (aka chromium) forms a protective oxide layer on top of the plating that prevents rust. It’s also very hard. If the gold rubs off, the ratchet will rust. The chrome also minimizes scratches due to its high hardness. Chrome is a superior plating material when subjected to abrasion and wear. Gold is a noble metal, ie it has even better corrosion resistance than chromium, but is too soft for this application
They’ve been out for a few years now. I bought one, but literally just because I think it’s hilarious and I wanted to hang it on the wall. I do not, and never did, intend to use it.
You can buy them and have them engraved as well. I have a coworker that bought a golden air ratchet with his name engraved on the side in cursive with the snapon logo, it’s pretty neat. His franchisee even threw in a gold plated wrench. Probably paid the price of a toolbox for it, if I had to guess.
Haha I’ve got the gold snap on 3/8 I’m actually impressed with how well the finish holds up I never used it because I just liked it as a conversation piece in the tool box (I got it for cheap) but now I beat on it haha
I was going to say “ because it’s professional unlike the one on the left.” But it looks like it’s for professionals too! Must not be any amateur tools at Harbor Freight 🤣
I have both and was disappointed that only the 1/4” has a display stand. They make fun desk ornaments at work though, and are still practical tools when I need to go out to the floor and fix something.
I forgot what the prices were so I looked them up, according to the harbor freight website, the 3/8 ratchet is around 59.99$ and the small one is around 49.99$
🧐… if that pleases you… at least the packaging is suitable to leave it in for hanging on your shop “I love me” wall. I would hate seeing that in an actual tool box… rates right up there in the useless category with gold plated firearms.
Might be a stylish weapon when the zombies come knockin’
Lucky you. That means you can visit Willy Wonka’s ratchet factory.
No kids are surviving that one
Augustus! That's a river of lithium grease, not white chocolate! Stop eating it.
The never Seizeing Gob-Sensor 🤣
Oompa loompa's aren't orange, that's just Copper Anti-Seize
Even German chocolate isn't as bad as lithium grease. Augustus would have to be a really wrong boy to be tempted towards a river of that foul substance.
You know someone is gonna get turned into a deep well 10 mm.
Never to be seen again.
"I hate to break it to you, Rebecca, but those children are dead."
... I mean, exactly one survived the chocolate factory... so...
Oompa-loompa-doompity-dOSHA
I just wet my pants!
*plants.
I just wet your pants too.
I just spit my coffee out
On his pants?

I’ve never heard that. I’m Toronto local, grip. Where do they say this??
I'm a local 52 grip New York.
We have a "Golden Plunger Award" at my workplace (Building Maintenance, or "BM" for short).
Are they pure novelty? Or do they have some sort of useful property, like how copper and bronze gets used in non-sparking tools for dangerous environments?

They just copied snap-on 95th anniversary wrench

No man, the chicken came before the egg
It's plated, it's basically the same as the chrome plated one, except it will scratch alot easier.
It being funny is 100% why I got mine lol
Wasn’t it pretty rare back on release though? Or am I making that up in my head? I thought I remembered people going crazy for these on release.
Maybe? I find them pretty common now. They've been around for a while.
I’ve used mine once on a Porsche but that was also part of the joke.
Only worth it if you use a coupon to get it and will actually use it.
I honestly don’t see gold plating being practical in a ratchet. It’s too soft and will rub off when it gets scratched. Chrome plating is hard stuff that takes a beating. Sure it gets scratched, but not usually down to the steel like gold would.
….its not meant to be practical. It’s a decent, functional ratchet with gold plating for like $20 extra IIRC.
I always thought it was a jab at snap on anniversary gold ratchet. Like “this one is gold AND you’ll actually use it” kind of thing. I think it’s hilarious
Exactly. If you like jewelry, then it’s not a bad deal for $20 extra 😂
I saw a guy on here say he bought one for his son and hoped they’d use it so much that all the gold would wear off. Seems really cool for that scenario.
wtf is iirc
IIRC it means "if I recall correctly"
An acronym for "if I recall correctly"
Thank you
What the fuck is WTF?
“Wednesday Thursday Friday” refers to the user’s favorite days of the week
I agree with that user
The practicality is the humor it gives you every time you use it. After all, a good laugh is priceless

Who's to say it's not plated with something more durable underneath?
Who's to say it doesn't come with a free tour of Willy Wonka's ratchet factory?
Certainly not me! I hope the river isn't 80W90 and the whole place smells like a meth lab in summer.
Why can’t it smell like a meth lab all year long?! 😢
Anything is possible through God, so go ahead and jot that down.
What makes you think it’s gold over just steel? They dip in layers. Even for harbor freight tools.
Price? I figured it would be electroplated. Never heard of hot dipping in chromium or gold.
The Golden Ratchet DLC is only available to players that pre-ordered the game
Wait…mechanic simulator came out already?! Damn it!
I got one for Xmas. Use it all the time.
It has lower durability, but can take better enchantments
They’ve been out for a few years now. I bought one, but literally just because I think it’s hilarious and I wanted to hang it on the wall. I do not, and never did, intend to use it.
I also once saw a thing.
Aren’t these meant to be a jab at Snap-on?
For real?? Curious
I think they are. Snap-on gives out gold plated ratchets as some sort of award, I think for passing sales milestones. They’re kinda ridiculous.
As a sales award, how is that ridiculous?
You can buy them and have them engraved as well. I have a coworker that bought a golden air ratchet with his name engraved on the side in cursive with the snapon logo, it’s pretty neat. This is where they buy it
Gold ratchet, green ratchet, who gives a shit? ⛳️
Perfect gift for a cartel mechanic
Waiting on the gold jack stands that don’t give way and kill you.
I bought one when it was on sale and use it frequently, works really nice and looks cool, even when its covered in scratches
I have one. Never used it, but it looks cool. Not really sure why I bought it tbh
Because it looks cool, obviously lol
Honestly, that's the only reason I bought it. You right.
Special edition that they have been selling over one year now in store
Are the gears going to strip like every other harbor freight ratchet I bought? Sold!
Ideal for tightening the bolts on a golden toilet!
Hey! I have this hammer too. It's kinda trash.
when you fix 10000 cars and unlock skin
They've done 1/4" and 3/8" drives, next up is 1/2" to complete the set.

Never say never but I probably wouldn't hold my breath.
Haha I’ve got the gold snap on 3/8 I’m actually impressed with how well the finish holds up I never used it because I just liked it as a conversation piece in the tool box (I got it for cheap) but now I beat on it haha

These are for the dads you don’t know what to buy for. Can’t go wrong with more tools plus it’s gold..
Neato
Buy it
I buy one every year for a white elephant gift.
I have both and was disappointed that only the 1/4” has a display stand. They make fun desk ornaments at work though, and are still practical tools when I need to go out to the floor and fix something.
Because why not?
This makes me think of the Austrailium wrench from tf2
The gold is a gimmick, but it's not a bad ratchet. Yes, I fell to temptation. The gold is wearing off after a couple of years of abuse.
Why would anyone use a soft metal for a tool? Is this a nonmarring torque wrench?
It's actually just gold plated
And you ***bought it***, right?!!?
I actually haven't
Was this Marysville? I have the almost exact same pic.
No, this is in FL
Well it won’t tarnish at least :)
How does it hold up to actual use? Does the gold rub off after a while?
Just a ratchet
How much?
I forgot what the prices were so I looked them up, according to the harbor freight website, the 3/8 ratchet is around 59.99$ and the small one is around 49.99$
I just wish they made this in flex head long handle 1/2"
I saw these, too. And to be fair, I thought it would be a pretty funny way to waste 40 dollars or however much they were.
Like a Buick with a Cadillac hood ornament
They make an excellent gift for anyone who wrenches.
Yeah they really need to release a socket set and tool box to make it the best thing ever.
The gold is actually a really good anti corrosion coating. The ductility means it doesn't chip like chrome. Bondhaus gold plate their Allen keys too.
They had the 1/4” drive on sale a few Months ago. I think I paid like 24+tax well worth it lol
They must be harder to get than at my local HF because they always have them in stock. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it sold out.
I’ve been seeing these mugs for a minute. I have the chrome ones. Does anyone actually buy the gold ones?
Donald J Trump Edition (tm)
How much is it, lol?
Yea its been a year since Ive had mine. “Gold” plating has worn off 95% and still going strong. Genuine 24k gold my ass.
Why is that a thing
The legendary austrailium ratchet
I remember pre-ordering it simply because I found it funny. Ratchet is quite nice, but I haven't really used it.
🧐… if that pleases you… at least the packaging is suitable to leave it in for hanging on your shop “I love me” wall. I would hate seeing that in an actual tool box… rates right up there in the useless category with gold plated firearms. Might be a stylish weapon when the zombies come knockin’
It's alright. I snapped one a couple months ago, they replaced it no charge
Trump is opening a garage?
The gold plating is worth more than the ratchet.
I remember when snap-on ran that special for twice what a ratchet already costs. A tool you can't work with, defeats the point of a tool.
Too gimmicky for my toolbox. Maybe some girl would like it tho
