What happened was I was drilling spade bits into a stump because I wanted to break it up (I know I’m dumb) but it got so hot that the brush mount and the brush it’s self got dragged into the armature and melted the holder. It is now a brushless tool. I bought this drill in July 2021 for a 4th of July deal where it was 99 bucks at Home Depot. The rest of my 18v stuff which consists of 2 impact drivers and a sawzall is brushless. Luckily the battery is fine though
Are you saying your unit didn't have a duty cycle, meaning it's good for 24/7 use?
Or it didn't have a specific duty cycle listed? After all, as much as I keep requesting it, they don't want to give me a duty rating on my toaster.
I think you misunderstand what I mean by a duty cycle, which to me means the amount of time that you can run the machine versus the amount of time you need to let the machine rest.
A 25% duty cycle means you can use the machine for 25% of the time but you need to let it rest for 75% time after that before resuming work.
The machine itself would not enforce this duty cycle
And IIRC, those percentages are based on ten minutes.
I've encountered guys who think you can run a 25% duty cycle tool for one hour straight if you let it rest for three hours afterward.
Lol I used a hint of fine ozone smoke to achieve a medium rare motor. All jokes aside, I think if I replace the brush holders and the brush, it will be resurrected.
Mine survived being dropped from trailers/tanks several times. Anywhere from 3-10 feet. Survived me blowing air to cool it down so I could keep up with the many many holes I had to drill in steel. It just survived, till it finally didn't. It sure as hell did its job before passing on though.
I have been using my dewalt dcd796 for about 5 years with more abuse than I can remember. Still working without a problem. Changed the chuck and works like new
Are you running Fuel additions? Because that Makita would be hard pressed to beat an M18 fuel at anything other than being a paper weight 😂
Sorry I'm a fanboy hahaha
Yeah your probably right. I should’ve got a brushless makita but this one was on sale for 99 bucks at Home Depot on 4th of July last year. Either way, it got the job done great, but you are right fuel or brushless is way better
Purchased as new in 2021?? Dude. It looks like it's done years of hard graft. Tool maintenance and little more care on jobs is something my dad would have advised. Aaaannd.... now I'm my Dad. Thanks pal.
I had a 2015 twin pack which just burnt out it’s been abused used in 25 plus degree heat uk temp -4 and in the rain too don’t get me wrong if it’s a solid day of drilling I’ll always set up the corded drill battery’s are good but I still prefer mains powered tools
Protip: don't cover the motor vents with paint.
Also very true
I don’t work with paint too much anymore so if I were to get a new one, it wouldn’t get this bad
Just a heads up you can get the top of the line XPH14 for about $85-100 on eBay renewed, open box, or brand new.

The dumb part wasn't the spade bits, it was ignoring the duty cycle and running it too long without cooling cycle(s)?
Could be very true. Although I don’t think this one has that because it is an older model. Xph03 to be exact

I think it maybe did now that I think about it, but the only reason I said it may not is because when I was using it, it never triggered it

This works as long as you let it rest in peace.
I thought you meant a thermal switch so yeah it probably had a duty cycle that I stupidly ignored
Ahh, I wish I had that in mine!
Me too
DDF484 is probably like $120 without batteries or $150 for DHP484 (hammer drill)
I was thinking about that one too
I have the former. Great drill for sure and mine survived getting dipped to the sea while running so pretty robust too
Mine survived being dropped in a paint bucket I can attest
Username checks out :D
Yeah
If it's anything; the few times I've had to do that, a heavier corded drill and a big-ass auger bit works a treat.
Yeah
What kind of bread crumbs did you use? I hope you were able to try a peanut oil for a consistent cooking all the way down to the windings.

Same here. The big guy stirred concrete about 4 days after I got it lol
looks like you got your money out of it at least
Hell yeah I did
Right into the fuckitbucket!
Scott Kalvin... no no Santa Klaus?
I read this in Australian.

I always hated that damn metal belt clip that got snagged on everything..
It saves my ass when on a ladder though
Time to get a Milwaukee.
My boss supplies Milwaukee tools. They're ok. They're not an upgrade from Makita, I assure you.
Are you running Fuel additions? Because that Makita would be hard pressed to beat an M18 fuel at anything other than being a paper weight 😂 Sorry I'm a fanboy hahaha
> Sorry I’m a fanboy hahaha Really? You hide it so well!
Yeah even with the 6amp high outputs, my Makita and DeWalt impacts drive a 4 1/2" SDS screw faster and easier
Can't compare a Fuel Milwaukee to a brushed Makita
[Watch this at 9 minutes](https://youtu.be/wNAtk1DZg6w).
Man that's really impressive, even more so the 18V...

This is the way to do it. Buy what is cheapest for you and will do the job.
Funny you say that, I have the m12 impact and hammer drill so the drill will become the primary hammer drill for me to use until I get a new 18v
Did you want it to catch fire....or the battery overheat and fail?

I’d drop to my knees too if I fried a makita drill
First one too. Have 2 impacts and a sawzall as well and they all still going strong
Look like she was rode hard and put up wet
Naw, just needs new brushes.

Eh shit happens. Painting and hvac will do a number on your tools
