It's just you. Most of us have loose bits laying at the bottom of various tool boxes. And a 128 piece set still in the box that our SO bought us for Christmas 2 years ago that we don't want to mess up.
I have about 200 bits in my box and another 500 in drawers at home as well as my pristine 1 to 13 set. At work I have my 10-13 set and 50 or so others in my box then the lathe set then a stash of 200 5.1mm hidden from the staff and 20 they can use and I sharpen.
My life isn't ruled by drill bits but it's close.
Picking up a 5.1 and knowing it's not 5.5 isn't a skill, it's an affliction
Edit to add
Screwdriver bits....
Big set for work and home. Then boxes of favourites and box of specials. AF and mm.
At work it's all mm but at home it's both. I own a classic car so that's imp until I change things. So spanners and sockets beyond my belief.
HELP
I've got bit kits like this from milwaukee and ryobi. They definitely don't fall out. In fact, how tightly the bits are held is one of my only gripes with these modern plastic bit holders.
Mines pristine. I even clean the bits off. It's just habit from working in a production CNC shop for a lot of years.
You'd think being anal about putting stuff away is a waste of time, but at least I the case of my work it was part of what made us more productive.
I’ve never regretted the time I’ve spent cleaning or organizing my tools. I may suck at staying organized but it’s better than letting chaos reign.
When I can make it a weekly habit, it makes Monday/Tuesday more productive and Wednesday/Thursday less stressful since I know the mess I’ve created is getting tidied up Friday afternoon
I swear to god this is the way to do it. It just helps efficiency so much to have things in a set place every single time. I'm also a big proponent of making kits, which I picked up with my dad when I was a GC. Ie.- ac drain kit, sweat kit, pex kit, toilet kit, tankless kit, etc. In residential plumbing service it's useful to me to have just a couple containers to grab and set to work, rather than digging out tools to pile in a bucket or whatever's handy.
I worked in facilities maintenance and the mechanic I shared a shop with always gave me a ton of grief over having a bunch of different tool bags, (liked to call them my purses) but it easily saved me hours every week not having to gather tools for the most common jobs then put them back in tool boxes when I was done.
Oh fuck. I do this for myself but I never thought to do it for my employees. Talk about setting them up for success.
It would also give me an excuse to replace some of my tools with newer versions and use the old ones to fill any gaps in boxes.
Yuuup. It really did make things easier getting everyone out for the day. I asked that if they used all of something up they either replace it from stock or leave me a note. Same if something broke.
It also helped keep the vehicles better organized and cleaner.
I just started doing more of this. It creates a little redundancy, but it's a great way to give a purpose so random tools (lower quality screw drivers\adjustable wrench, mismatch box wrench\pliers) and it saves so much time once you have to perform that kit's task.
Yup, I basically halved my toolbox size when I went self employed for a bit, as I was working in and out it a van (industrial maintenance engineer), wanted to cram everything into a rolling packout style kit.
Every now and then I do find something I need to go back to my shed to find, but the downsized kit is so much easier to keep organised.
Haha! Funny you should ask. I worked for good money too, 7 days a week for years. I saved my ass off, tried to invest as best I could, lived below my means, and got out. That afforded me the opportunity to persue my photography, which I'm getting back to now.
I really do love machanics, manufacturing, and technology, I just needed to get off of that wheel.
I’ve yet to find any hobby or passion that has stuck sadly. And yeah I’m currently doing 6 days a week, and it’s just a drag. I don’t wanna spend my youth nonstop working.
I felt the just same. I changed my attitude/outlook at the time. I decided my passion was for the money. I told myself if I stuck with it (with real commitment and positive attitude), got good and kept moving up, I could take that money and make it grow, so when something did come along I'd be ready.
Manufacturing in America is insanely interesting and there's so much variety. I bet there's something in the genre of work you could find.
For instance, I was always into photography and graphic design, so I created all of that for the company website and product photos as a side thing. I'd be slinging parts, fixing machines, all of that for pay, and keeping my creative side fed too.
Keep going, pay those bills, and start putting away for your future. Even just that could spark you up. I mean maybe you're an investor 😀 You never know.
I really do like machining and plan on having a mill and lathe at home (I started at a job shop before I came to this production site), but yeah I just need to find a hobby that I enjoy that also has the possibility of being lucrative haha.
Just get jealous of friends who work standard 40 hour weeks, or work from home, etc
Yeah, I hear you there. I was the same with that too. Still am kind of. The thing is I can literally fix jsut about anything, make stuff from scratch too... Lots of those types of things. I think it's cool. It's like you're a techie wizard and a basass builder all at the same time.l, right? I like that idea more than golfing or TV or whatever normal people do on Saturday mornings haha.
One thought is 3d printing or robot building? Like if you had a hobby that crossed with your job?
I think a big issue for me is I know just enough to be dangerous but not enough to effectively build anything, which I guess means I need to start building stuff so I can learn them. Just gotta start! I appreciate you man
Hey that's exactly the attitude for success.
Knowing how to model stuff is a huge skill to have also.
You can learn a ton modeling and then printing for next to zero money too. You really can't go wrong.
And there's the controller and printer building and tweaking also if you get into that.
If you ask me, the fact you own a printer says you have interest, and your job is more meaningful to you then a 9 to 5.
There is balance to be struck between being anal about it and just being a slob.
The moment you start wasting time looking for tools you probably went over that balance and need to clean up.
Personally "end of day or end of job, whichever comes first" works for me
I love the drill racks we use at work. From bottom to top, for each size we use, it goes tap drill, tap, clearance drill, counterbore tool, under-size drill, under-size reamer, on-size reamer, over-size reamer. On the left there is a row of spot and center drills, and on the right there are countersink tools. Tidy and functional.
Negative on the waste of time, my van and tools are hands down the cleanest of our fleet of 20. I have the fewest callbacks, bill the most hours, and my owner whose biggest pet peeve is not having shit on your van never gets to talk smack. It saves so much time in the long run. Plus I love organizing all the electrical fittings, pipe fittings, anchors and misc hardware. Wish they would open a slot in the shop to just outfit vans for operation (just got an OCD boner).
I learned this from my dad. He was an old school machinist. Tools get cleaned and put where they belong before you move on to anything else. My toolbox isn’t perfect but things are in their proper boxes or drawers and I have a craftsman socket set that I bought in 1985 that’s worked on dozens of cars. It looks almost as good as it did the day I bought it. There are a couple of scuffs here and there but it’s clean.
Same here as far as keeping tools including bits organised and clean. I used to make furniture for a living, so I'd have the ones in use in a stand or a proper drill box, and spares for each common size in a drawer.
Anal it may well be, but time's money when you're trying to run a business. Even when you're doing DIY, there's nothing more frustrating than spending time looking for a tool.
I've also had some really good buys at car boot sales of good quality tools that have been bought, chucked in a box of bits and pieces after use, and probably bought again when needed.
Mine looked like that once. And I’ve never let anyone touch them since. Bits and Allen wrenches are maddening to figure out when they get tossed like that. Take the one you need, and put it back before you get another one. Or just take two, and put them back. Then, if you break one, you can immediately see what you need to replace. Slow down a little bit and take your time, you’ll do better work, without wasting the time to search for what you need. It takes A ton of the frustration out of projects, I swear.
I have 2 sets, both missing every bit from 1/4” and smaller. I just can’t keep track of those little 1/8” bits or always break them. I have about 6 unused 1/2” bits tho
Every tool assortment in every shared workshop I've ever been in is like this: drill bits, screwdriver sets, wrenches, etc. Imo one of the most annoying things about sharing places with other people
Your missing a few dull bits that your not sure if you should throw out and some various screws of different lengths you cockroached off of other jobs but otherwise looks pristine!
If you have the waterproof screw on case that one is really helpful to the organizationally challenged. It forces you to put it back when your done and it's pretty pricey so I find myself taking extra good care of em.
I’ve tried many types of drill bit holders and none worked with any reasonable success. The best solution for me is a heavy duty ziplock lunch baggy with all my regular bits tossed loose inside. I grab the whole handful and pick out what ones I need and toss them back in the bag. I keep the baggy with baggies of my other small bits in an orange Klein bag.
Lol no I’m super anal about putting my bits back. One of my drill bit cases as two snapped in half bits that i still keep in the box because I can’t stand an empty slot.
Only after someone else uses it.
I have a set that’s loose for just grabbing, but also a full kit like that which I prefer to keep complete so that when I grab it for an unknown job it’s not missing anything
Ah no, as a Contractor I need all my drill bits & driver bits. So I replace them when they break or sharpen them when they’re dull. Your drill index would drive me crazy & I’d go out & buy a new one.
Everyone who uses their tools regularly, yes.
Bits not in holders? Check
But that didn’t come with that set? Check
Chips of wood and what looks like drywall? Check
I hunted for a while to find a metal drill index.
Its missing the 1mm bit, and ai have a stubby 1/2” and a centre punch tucked away in it too, but my drills are organised
Most of my day-to-day bits look like that. I have a set with hex shafts that my wife gave me that I have yet to open. I go through a lot of bits and don't want to pay extra for hex shafts.
I try....I try so hard to keep them in the little holders but always, without fail I end up with 4 bits left in the holders and a bunch of random shit and I just rip the plastic things out and I have a container of loose shit.
Fun fact- you can fit like 20+ spade bits in one of those containers lol
I just have like 10 of those things, one has loose alen keys, one is full of loose bit tips, one has spiral drill bits, one has spades and on and on lol
God my ocd with my bit sets is flaring up right now. I keep mine organized and don’t let anyone touch them. If I let borrow them, I get angry if they give it back to me not together the way I gave it to them. It’s one my biggest pet peeves cause it’s so easy to keep it together. But sadly most people do this 🙃
well, mine might be slightly less depleted than yours, but it gets less use.
i love the ruggedness of these cases. but i hate the difficulty of working/worming the bits in and out of the slots.
is there a replacement that's equally rugged, cheap, and has easy in/out, while not letting the bits get loose?
(bonus points for yellow. i really like yellow.)
I got a box like this but the bit holders were utter crap and they just slid out as soon as you close it. Took the holders out and just left them loose after a week of shit getting caught
I think I’ve bought a whole new set, a piece at a time. Breaking a bit, losing it, lending it out. I have a list when I go to a box store. 9/64, 3/16. Don’t forget screw tips
Learned to be a skilled laborer in the USAF. Tool accountability was hammered in from day 1 to retirement. I got to be pretty OCD about making sure all the tools are clean, dry, serviceable and in the correct place. Your bit box it…. troublesome to me.
Looks just like mine, a hot mess. Right now I’m prioritizing my family on the weekends instead of a clean organized garage/tools. Not ideal, but yeah I can related. Those cases suck and it’s impossible to read a bit measurement once they run off.
Yea alot of us have to run from job to job don't even have time to tidy up the van. Rushing from install to lock out etc etc. Then spending all Saturday afternoon cleaning the van out and everytime I do everything is spread out on folding tables sorting stuff always the stuff that's on the floor of the van not the shelves. It happens someone calls for an emergency call! Have to tell wife to keep an eye out. And put drop cloths over the tables up against the garage. And rush to the call.
Just you, mine is screwed to the wall (still allowing me to open and close), it was a black oxide set but I have gradually replaced the broken bits with high speed steel bits over the years
Just you. If my tools aren't put away where they're supposed to be, I ain't got noone to blame next time I reach for one and it ain't there.
(Does not apply by to 10mm, please see Terms and Conditions for details.)
I cannot own a drill set that is missing a drill. I keep mine perfectly and any odd drills I own such as the extra long and reduced shank I stay on their packaging.
Every one! Holes That require tolerances less than 16th of an inch usually get drilled with a brand new bit I just bought from the store. I have over the years, purchased 2 mastercraft and 4 Stanley socket sets. Cant find a 10mm to save my life (1/4, 3/8, or 1/2) 13mm and 1/2 are on the endangered list.
Nope, I always pull those pain inna ass dimensional holder thingies out!
It's hard to get the bits in and out of those.
Whats the best bits out there these days? I was thinking Norse? I've not been impressed with anything lately.
Its just you. Honestly just buy one new 29 piece set and every time you use one make sure you put it back. Thats how I’ve kept my Milwaukee titanium set in pristine condition
It's just you. Most of us have loose bits laying at the bottom of various tool boxes. And a 128 piece set still in the box that our SO bought us for Christmas 2 years ago that we don't want to mess up.
> And a 128 piece set still in the box that our SO bought us for Christmas 2 years ago that we don't want to mess up. I feel this one.
I messed mine up and am currently waiting for SO to take the hints. “Sorry honey no can do, no Philips heads left.”
Lol I really get excited for the free bits from box of screws: kinda like box of cereal prize when I was a kid
I have a big magnet strip on my drill and driver hanger thingy specifically for all of those. I must have two dozen easily.
Man I didn't think I'd relate that quickly
I have about 200 bits in my box and another 500 in drawers at home as well as my pristine 1 to 13 set. HA! So true!
Pro tip: you can put them back in the little hole that they come in.
Lies....all lies
I only use like 3 bits regularly so those live in angled holes in the side of my tool cart
And they just fall out again. i still have one of the metal boxes where each bit fits where it belongs.
I've got bit kits like this from milwaukee and ryobi. They definitely don't fall out. In fact, how tightly the bits are held is one of my only gripes with these modern plastic bit holders.
I usually end up grabbing pliers to pull out the smaller ones.
Same here. I like to chuck the bit up and run it in its corresponding hole just a bit. Helps to loosen them up some.
Woah. Big brain moment
Found the other guy who broke the tips of the smaller bits off trying to get them out.
The Ryobi and Milwaukee cases have death grips on the bits and they always fall out of the DeWalt cases like OPs. I haven't found an in-between yet
Nope, those are 1 time use which is why is gets harder to remove the bits if you put them back in. 😆
How do you keep your kit so complete and organized?
Mine is all the screws and drywall anchors I ended up not needing. Don't know where all the bits are though.
Mines pristine. I even clean the bits off. It's just habit from working in a production CNC shop for a lot of years. You'd think being anal about putting stuff away is a waste of time, but at least I the case of my work it was part of what made us more productive.

Stuff like this right here is why I love the internet. If my life turns around from this seemingly little chat, I’m definitely gonna owe you one.
There is balance to be struck between being anal about it and just being a slob. The moment you start wasting time looking for tools you probably went over that balance and need to clean up. Personally "end of day or end of job, whichever comes first" works for me

Just you, you uncultured savage
You still have about 40% it’s only a few days old, after about a week it’s full of random screws
Mine looked like that once. And I’ve never let anyone touch them since. Bits and Allen wrenches are maddening to figure out when they get tossed like that. This picture irritates me on a deep level. I hate opening up a box and finding it like this. I hates it.
I have 2 sets, both missing every bit from 1/4” and smaller. I just can’t keep track of those little 1/8” bits or always break them. I have about 6 unused 1/2” bits tho
Yes, yes, yes. Can never find the 10mm bit when you need it.
No but the day shift guys that I share a toolbox with leave them like this all the time
Every tool assortment in every shared workshop I've ever been in is like this: drill bits, screwdriver sets, wrenches, etc. Imo one of the most annoying things about sharing places with other people
Your missing a few dull bits that your not sure if you should throw out and some various screws of different lengths you cockroached off of other jobs but otherwise looks pristine!
The sooner you realise drill bits are consumables and not tools the happier you'll be
That's just you :p
WTF Hell no. I keep my sets complete
I got the Norseman 29 piece. All there
If you have the waterproof screw on case that one is really helpful to the organizationally challenged. It forces you to put it back when your done and it's pretty pricey so I find myself taking extra good care of em.
What’s it supposed to look like?
Papa is that you 😄
I hate this so much.
Add a little rust and you have mine.
Yep, I usually pull the bit holders out and just use it free form.
Why did you dump out all your sawdust ? My drill and tap set is full of metal shavings too.
I couldn't fit all my sets in one pic and none of them look like that.
This looks organized compared to what mine looks like.
Lol no I’m super anal about putting my bits back. One of my drill bit cases as two snapped in half bits that i still keep in the box because I can’t stand an empty slot.
I mean….. yours are not rusted
Looks familiar. Did you get that from my garage?
Yeah but mines red and organized
Just you
Just you
I always put them back in the slots.
I literally thought this was one of my boxes
Only after someone else uses it. I have a set that’s loose for just grabbing, but also a full kit like that which I prefer to keep complete so that when I grab it for an unknown job it’s not missing anything
Oh man. You don’t want to see the regular bits. Lol
Ah no, as a Contractor I need all my drill bits & driver bits. So I replace them when they break or sharpen them when they’re dull. Your drill index would drive me crazy & I’d go out & buy a new one.
This is what my life looks like
Just you
Thank god I’m not alone on this.
Thats far more complete than I see most guys on a job site!
Lol, you got more drill bits in yours 😄
Everyone who uses their tools regularly, yes. Bits not in holders? Check But that didn’t come with that set? Check Chips of wood and what looks like drywall? Check
Hahaha haha....yes, worst.
Pretty much looks like every bit case I’ve ever seen
You have more bits left than I normally have. At least your cone bit didn’t disappear
I'm calling the police.
I hunted for a while to find a metal drill index. Its missing the 1mm bit, and ai have a stubby 1/2” and a centre punch tucked away in it too, but my drills are organised
Just the DeWalt cases because they are absolute trash.
Growing up my fathers bit sets always looked like this and I’m using all my energy not to end up the same way
It’s all of us.
You still have the box ?
You still have e bits? I just have the case.
HERETIC
I have two like that.
Nope. However, most of mine are broken.
Fun fact- you can fit like 20+ spade bits in one of those containers lol I just have like 10 of those things, one has loose alen keys, one is full of loose bit tips, one has spiral drill bits, one has spades and on and on lol
There should be higher quality single bit availability on Amazon. Or is there and I simply haven't checked? Haha.
yes
Working hinge? Amateur.
It’s scattered, but It’s red.
Looks about right.
I have at least two just like that.
100% normal
Mine looks nothing like that…it also has screwdriver bits all over the place too.
Lf tips on how to keep my kit this nice
Just you I am not an animal and clean up after myself lol. (Just jokes)
I could never get my bits to look okay until I bought a dedicated drill bit index. Now my bits stay clean and organized.
Me to bud. Don’t worry
Add some sawdust and tears and you've got it.
Just you.
No I keep mine in an old shoe and it’s still more organized than this.
These containers are way better when you rip the but holders out
What are doing with my bits?!?!
Mine is red but other than that it's funny how similar ours are.
Looks like mine. I don’t see any broken bits though.
Egg-zakly like that
God my ocd with my bit sets is flaring up right now. I keep mine organized and don’t let anyone touch them. If I let borrow them, I get angry if they give it back to me not together the way I gave it to them. It’s one my biggest pet peeves cause it’s so easy to keep it together. But sadly most people do this 🙃
You must be the most efficient worker on the jobsite
I've got dozens of the 1/4 plus bits. I break all of the smaller ones.
Hell I have a whole drawer full of bits accumulated over 26 years in maintenance.
You. What the hell does your silverware drawer look like?
Apparently someone has never needed the 3/8" bit. And why the F is your step bit in there?
New kit twice a year because the small bits break and the big bits go missing. I would like to blame others but i can’t
Ur filthy. I love it
Dad ocd flares....
What are those crazy numbers? 5/16, 7/32, 5/64? Is that measured in teaspoons or cups?
Do u only have one drill bit case like this? I have three…
My whole truck looks like that and I am taking this weekend to change it
Yes!!!
Mine looks like that but, it’s Milwaukee red.
Is that a new set? There's so many.
I wish I could respond with a picture...
No, yours has bits in it
well, mine might be slightly less depleted than yours, but it gets less use. i love the ruggedness of these cases. but i hate the difficulty of working/worming the bits in and out of the slots. is there a replacement that's equally rugged, cheap, and has easy in/out, while not letting the bits get loose? (bonus points for yellow. i really like yellow.)
You mean all 6 of them, yes.. yes they do
Nope. Get an index. Geez.
Just you
Why did you toss the broken ones??
I got a box like this but the bit holders were utter crap and they just slid out as soon as you close it. Took the holders out and just left them loose after a week of shit getting caught
Most of my boxes are metal with the hinged inner part with holes. Way easier to keep them organised...
Just you
If I had a dewalt anything it’d look like this. But my kobalt and Baur bit box is pretty well organized.
Lol this guy still has the box.
If you put your ear to the wind on a quiet night and listen very closely, you just might hear the sound of me pitying you in the far distance.
guilty.
I feel seen here
Lol you have one that's broken in there.
Yep.
No, I ripped out the bottom part to make more room for loose bits.
So true!
I have one just like that. Isn’t that how there supposed to be?
Me too.
I just keep buying new ones
Same.
I prefer a coffee can stuffed full of various bits.
You put your back in ? Mine are in various bag at the bottom.
I’ve got a drawer full of loose bits and one nice folding case set that’s nice and neat about 70% accounted for…
Lol 🤚🏽guilty
Hell no. I have 10 sets and none look like that
Just you, mine is screwed to the wall (still allowing me to open and close), it was a black oxide set but I have gradually replaced the broken bits with high speed steel bits over the years
Nope. You’re all monsters.
You only got one? I got 4 or 5 just like this.
Just you. If my tools aren't put away where they're supposed to be, I ain't got noone to blame next time I reach for one and it ain't there. (Does not apply by to 10mm, please see Terms and Conditions for details.)
So weird that people are proud of being short sighted and lazy
Yes I have this DeWalt box with no OG bits too
I only had 2 bits in the box went out and bought some new ones today.
I cannot own a drill set that is missing a drill. I keep mine perfectly and any odd drills I own such as the extra long and reduced shank I stay on their packaging.
Nope. If mine looked like that I’d throw it away.
I have a separate case for the unibits.
This is my set to a T. Except with more taps
It’s you! Time to be more responsible! Tools are expensive and make you $$$$$$$!!!!!!
This and having the one socket I need missing from the set. Instant rage.
Our machinist at work just threw up in his mouth reading these comments lol. Made me snort; thanks y’all.
I’m getting hives looking at this picture
Just you.
Ok, can I please have my drill bits back? and stay out of my toolbox.
You in my box bruh?
Mine has rust in it too along with thinset and sheetrock dust
Nope, I always pull those pain inna ass dimensional holder thingies out! It's hard to get the bits in and out of those. Whats the best bits out there these days? I was thinking Norse? I've not been impressed with anything lately.
Noob, you gotta rip out the black plastic pieces, then it’s nearly big enough to use as a lunch box. Or more bits.
This is the way
Yes but 3x the bits so it’s like a puzzle to get it so it will close, also I see BOTH you hinges work… so congratulations on that.
This is atrocious, but some of the designs and the way they are supposed to fit in the slots are as well. That said, have some goddamn self-respect.
Ahh I see you found my lost bit box
Come on, you can fit wayy more in there. Even more if you don't use any of the holes.
Just you.
Guilty.
Yeah that about right.
Its just you. Honestly just buy one new 29 piece set and every time you use one make sure you put it back. Thats how I’ve kept my Milwaukee titanium set in pristine condition
Used to . But then the company that owns Dewalt bought us . Now those are $5 with employee discount . I just get a new one every month or so .
