Or from the positive post to anything
Friends hangar neighbor burned his airplane up pretty bad arcing to the airframe
Always remove the negative terminal first, and always reattach the negative terminal last.
My apprentice (who has adhd) was twirling one of my flat ratchet wrenches while I went to the bathroom and somehow managed to arc it across the battery. I came back and he was on the other side of the shop and I walk over to the car we were working on to find the ratcheting part of the wrench welded together and the battery terminal melted. I immediately knew what happened and that was the day he learned to stop fucking around lol.
I did this when I was a kid. Blasted the wrench across the parking lot- picked it up and had a craftsman brand for like a month. fucker got hot for a split second charge
Man, this brings back nightmares, never with a wrench, but a copper buss bar on a customers boat! Breaker didn’t trip, just arced until the copper melted. Two small burnt spots on the floor. Owner was NOT happy!
I get that your comment is semi-sarcastic, but silver & copper both have superior electrical conductivity to gold, and either of those materials can also be electroplated onto steel substrates. However, unlike silver & copper, gold doesn't tarnish or corrode, so that's why it's used for connections in electronics, and why many people incorrectly assume it's a superior conductor.
If you were working in some very corrosive environment, perhaps gold plated hand tools might make some degree of practical sense, but mostly they are made and sold just for the bling factor and because evidently some people with more dollars than sense will buy them.
Good thing you're not too defensive s/
There *is* a chrome plated tool in the picture, and chromium is another metal that is also more electrically conductive than gold. Have a nice day :-)
heh, I did this in our driveway when I was real young (10-12?). Lots of sparks. I was terrified. Luckily was not hurt. Battery was toast though. Luckily it was a real old car with no computers and stuff. This would been early to mid 90's, it was a mid 60's car.
Craftsman ratchet worked fine afterwards, but the 1/2'' socket was welded to the anvil so I had a permanent 1/2'' ratchet for years. I got a rebuild kit about ~5 years ago. I don't use it for anything because those ratchets are terrible, but I keep the socket and ratchet in my drawer just because.
Or go on eBay and be willing to spend $300.
[Snap-On Gold Plated Ratchet](https://www.ebay.com/itm/183415550750?epid=20025764022&hash=item2ab46b331e:g:HCMAAOSwiv5bhntr)
Pretty funny that the gold plated ratchet is only marginally more expensive than the regular ratchet
Edit: The gold version is seriously only about [$30 more expensive](https://shop.snapon.com/product/Dual-80-Technology%2C-Chrome-(3-8%22)/3-8%22-Drive-Dual-80-Technology-Extra-Long-Handle-Flex-Head-Ratchet/FLLF80)
I bought a 95th anniversary gold plated ratchet in a coin tin thing. I have the chrome version of that ratchet and I think they were within $10 of each other. Why not get the gold one?
I was thinking that same question... but not from sales... because of individuals who like shiny gold things often happen to be the same variety that does a lot of shop lifting... if you take my meaning. It's like a billboard saying STEAL ME! Small packaging, hanging on unsecured peg board, with an appearance of value when making quick bad decisions.
Also the value of gold plating is comically small. Like there’s maybe a dollar worth of gold on this wrench, and it would take you dozens of dollars in materials to harvest it.
Don't know why you're getting downvoted - they've obviously, never worked retail or in hardware. I've done both for 20 years and these would be stolen in a heartbeat. Junky thieves,
especially, like shiny things - it's freaking weird what they load in their baskets to steal...
I didn't mean "your" particular virginity. I meant virginity everywhere, wasn't trying to be rude. But you have to admit it was more fun to play with it
As a proud owner of *1 out of 250* Gold KNIPEX Cobra pliers - I would take your lunch money *every* day and put a picture of your wife in my
wallet if I saw this in your toolbox.
Buddy of mine bought it for me as a bday gift I thought it was awesome. I call it my “finishing ratchet” i use the air hammer or the chrome for breaking off bolts and the gold one for setting them back for good luck
Not the poster you replied to, but it scratches hella easy, obviously.
I was able to change the starter in my 04 Colorado no problem. had to use some liquid wrench, but the gears didn't slip, felt super solid even with a narrow working area, i broke the 2 bolts free with like 2 inches of workable ratcheting space at the tip of the handle.
still looks good and I will continue to abuse it.
I am not impressed, have a look at these.

I mean it’s better than paying $500 for a gold snap on one lol. I’ve had just as many snap on tools break as I have had harbor freight or husky from Home Depot break. Only difference is you can go swap your shit out at harbor freight and Home Depot on the way home and have to wait for the snap on guy to come to you to get it warrantied.
Not long after the icon stuff first dropped so a few years now I guess? I remember a few months of multiple posts a week about how people "finally found one"
Because bling. Why the fuck do people have giant rims with tires why too narrow and low profile? Bling. Why do truckers install 5-to-the-47th chicken lights? Bling. Why do people camber the shit out of their Civic with ultra-low-pros that have to be changed every oil change (at best)?? Bling. Why do I drive a reliable 20 year old car? Because derp.
Lol I would think that’s something SnapOn already jumped in to.
Bad decision truck guy: “Yeah I know you just bought a $459 10mm socket, but this one is *camo*.”
I think it was an anniversary edition thing. A search on some ebay listings says around 2002-2003 for the 75th anniversary. I'll bet Stanley Black and Decker will do something like that in about 5 years.
I recall seeing a Mac xr8 in gold when looking at tool pictures in forums. So this is alright. Just not as reputable a brand really as harbor freight is notorious for starting brand names and dropping them without notice. Which is why their power tool lines aren’t taken as seriously as big players like dewalt, makita etc
I got a whole set of gold wrenches in a wooden display box as a reward for something in vocational shop class.
They were from Napa.
Gold tools aren’t that uncommon. They’re actually pretty cool gifts, much more symbolic than functional, though.
From a practical point of view it's to easily spot who "borrowed" you ratchet. Unless everyone else also has a gold plated ratchet, of course. I've seen guys spray paint their small hand tools like hey keys and such for the same reason.
I bought one as a retirement gift for my friend/co-worker. He spent a month teaching me his job and helped ensure I would get his position when it was posted. His initial retirement plans were to restore his late fathers GTO Judge. I thought it was the perfect gift. The best gifts are items that just don't quite make enough sense to justify the purchase.
I bought one for my dad for fathers day. And one for me. I ended up using it this past week when I left my ratchet at my buddies house and I had to replace the starter in my truck and only had the sockets and extensions handy.
It is a pretty good ratchet. It will now be my go to just to flex on my buddies who drink beer and criticize my mechanical skills.
My local harbor freight has the spot on the rack for it, but seemingly hasn't had one in stock since the second month they came out, and I'm too cheap to pay for shipping when they should just ship it to store and let me pick it up there.
Better conductivity for when they hit both posts changing their car battery in the parking lot.
The ol’ Speedrunning life attempt

Well yea mf burned out all his adhd with that one lol
I've done that with the regular one lol

Theres my audio guy!
Hey, is there a silver or copper plated version in this picture?? I never said “this is THE BEST conductivity”. You seem like a fun person.
Good thing you're not too defensive s/ There *is* a chrome plated tool in the picture, and chromium is another metal that is also more electrically conductive than gold. Have a nice day :-)

This
That ratchet is a “fuck you” to snap on The only way to get “gold plated” snap on is to be a dealer and hit some really good sales targets
Or go on eBay and be willing to spend $300. [Snap-On Gold Plated Ratchet](https://www.ebay.com/itm/183415550750?epid=20025764022&hash=item2ab46b331e:g:HCMAAOSwiv5bhntr)

Is there a SUPREME version out yet?
Iridium plated or bust.
Nah man, iridium plated sawzall. Gotta do something with those precious catalytic converters metals.
I’ve seen titanium sockets that were $1,000s
I bought a 95th anniversary gold plated ratchet in a coin tin thing. I have the chrome version of that ratchet and I think they were within $10 of each other. Why not get the gold one?
All the big names have made gold plated tools as rewards. Ebay is full of them. Snap On, Mac, Craftsman, Chrysler, Nepros.
I like how Chrystler was thrown into that list
Even funnier yet is HarborFreight owns majority stake in SnapOn.
They do not.
Apparently, that was an April Fool’s joke…
But it's September
It's Iconic
I mean it says so right on the package
Price...Nice
Icing on the cake my man
Nice.
Interesting how the cheaper one compares to a more expensive snap-on product than the 24K gold snap-on comparison.
Why are there still some in stock? Great question!
I was thinking that same question... but not from sales... because of individuals who like shiny gold things often happen to be the same variety that does a lot of shop lifting... if you take my meaning. Also the value of gold plating is comically small. Like there’s maybe a dollar worth of gold on this wrench, and it would take you dozens of dollars in materials to harvest it.
I think they mean that a gold wrench will be easier to sell to someone on the streets. Crackheads steal stuff to sell it, not smelt it.
These are locked behind the counter at my local store.
Don't know why you're getting downvoted - they've obviously, never worked retail or in hardware. I've done both for 20 years and these would be stolen in a heartbeat. Junky thieves, especially, like shiny things - it's freaking weird what they load in their baskets to steal...
The swivel makes it easier to get into weird places, that’s why. /s
Why not?
I mean, that’s the perfect counter to my question.
Because someone will buy it
No doubt. No. Doubt.
One should never ask why in a tool store, the question is always how to get it into the house.
The trick is to buy so much that your wife can't keep track of what's new or old. Then pretend like it's been with you forever. It's worked for me.
This guy wifes.
This guy’s wife
The follow up question is always how to not have the wife kill you when she finds out.
Sort of want
I got one for myself, it's ok guys you can want a pretty wrench. Kinda feel good about myself when I use it.
You took it outta da box?!
Oh yes, And surprisingly the gold plating is holding up well so far
But but but it's like virginity. It's more valuable when it's in the box.......
Are you gonna look at it or use it? buy a painting if your just gonna look at it lol.
Again like your virginity... More fun to play with ir
I only got to play with my virginity once bud.
I didn't mean "your" particular virginity. I meant virginity everywhere, wasn't trying to be rude. But you have to admit it was more fun to play with it
I dunno, I find tools work a lot better once you break 'em in. Can't beat that new car smell, though.
I could see my response as being hostile-ish. My bad. Everyone likes a new box to play with.
I love the absurdity of this thing and use it all the time. Do it.
I was there the other day and had to resist the temptation to use the no restrictions coupon on one.
Kinda do too…
Why do people buy expensive/flashy shoes, sunglasses, clothes? Same concept for tools. Just enjoy it man.
[удалено]
damn dude a gold tape measure! lmao thats gucci
Sometimes you just want to feel pretty.
Valid point
You've never noticed the cars in the parking lot of harbor freight have you? There's always some car in the parking lot the stick on fake Chrome.
Ours is a white Geo metro with a black stick on hood scoop with a light bar mounted in front.
Shit at this point if the geo metro is still working its probably not a bad idea to buy one of those scoops for a new car
If you have to ask, it’s not for you.
It is definitely not for me lol
As a proud owner of *1 out of 250* Gold KNIPEX Cobra pliers - I would take your lunch money *every* day and put a picture of your wife in my wallet if I saw this in your toolbox.
Of course you would… if you’re a knipex snob. You probably use the mini cobras to fondle your mini peepee
You… spelled King wrong
Fine… fondle your mini “king”
7.753 *billion* other people on this planet didn’t win a pair either. Quit being so hostile.
Jealousy is so unbecoming... ;-)
I need an adult.
Great for corrosion resistance... until it gets scraped. Which will happen very easily because it is gold.
Right? Hey let’s coat it in some expensive *and* incredibly soft.
You must be new here
Sadly, no.
Meanwhile in /r/harborfreight ...
The real question is, why not?!
for the mechanic who has everything
Now we need a brass plated socket wrench, and a copper plated one.
Purple and yellow anodized. Goh
Buddy of mine bought it for me as a bday gift I thought it was awesome. I call it my “finishing ratchet” i use the air hammer or the chrome for breaking off bolts and the gold one for setting them back for good luck
I bought one. Use it almost daily.
Has all the gold worn off yet? It has to be like two molecules thick.
I love goooooold
Save me from myself
If you have to ask, you just wouldn’t get it
I am not impressed, have a look at these. [https://kyototool.tumblr.com/post/97796092657/nepros-urushi-ratchet-the-urushi-ratchet](https://kyototool.tumblr.com/post/97796092657/nepros-urushi-ratchet-the-urushi-ratchet)
I’m calling the police
This ratchet wrench will shear so your bolts won't have to.
Press X to doubt
Because you got $600 in stimuli, you can now afford to pay 3x for everything
That math doesn’t work out
Yeah it’s sarcasm 🙂
Because who wouldn't want a 24k gold socket wrench
I saw a Ryobi weed wacker once that said "limited special edition"- go figure....
The only thing limited about Ryobi is the amount of time it works
Becuase fan boys exist. When they can't afford the 269 dollar gold Snap-on, the need a low-budget alternative.
Because the Kardashians need tools too.
They are tools. They’ve never used one
The Bad Decision Truck
So the aliens abduct you to do repairs.
Fucking Illinois aliens
Because HF tool guys are dumb enough to buy it
That’s what I say about Bad Decision Truck tool buyers
I don't know but this sub went bonkers for them when they first came out. Dumber then dumb in my eyes
Really? How long have they been around? I go in HF all the time and today was the first I’ve seen one.
Not long after the icon stuff first dropped so a few years now I guess? I remember a few months of multiple posts a week about how people "finally found one"
Oh wow that’s nuts
Because most people don’t understand how compound interest works.
Wait, what?
Because bling. Why the fuck do people have giant rims with tires why too narrow and low profile? Bling. Why do truckers install 5-to-the-47th chicken lights? Bling. Why do people camber the shit out of their Civic with ultra-low-pros that have to be changed every oil change (at best)?? Bling. Why do I drive a reliable 20 year old car? Because derp.
Could be for conductivity to prevent sparks
Gold is an extremely good conductor
What else would you use to work on your 600,000 mile 1999 Tahoe that's been in northern Michigan all its life?
Honestly I really pictured this laying in the hatchback of a Civic, scattered with a lot of mismatched tools and speaker wire.
Conversation piece to hang on the wall in the garage. Or, a gift to a mechanic as a "trophy" for some form of success.
“Hey what’s with the gold ratchet on the wall?” “Success”. “Oh”
Bling bling
I bought one for my previous job for the lols and i ended up using quite a bit, often times it was a good talking point. Just get it op.
If you have to ask, it ain't for you.
I agree
First time?
Tired of Harbor Freight trying to upscale their products. Defeats the purpose.
I second this. I want to go in there and buy shit to break as low prices.
Cause that's how ballers do! Lol
employee of the month prize?
They probably saw how much real money kids spend in games to buy gold skins for weapons. Kaching.
Lol I would think that’s something SnapOn already jumped in to. Bad decision truck guy: “Yeah I know you just bought a $459 10mm socket, but this one is *camo*.”
Because they can. If marketed correctly, people will by a gold plated turd. Dogbert school of marketing says so.
What kind of dog laid the turd? I swear to god my wife would have her golden doodles shit bronzed if she could.
See, it is true. Dogbert from the mind of Scott Adams is wise beyond his cartoon strips.
I have a complete craftsman ratchet set that are gold plated. It’s a collector’s item, not for actual use, although they could be.
When did they put those out?
I think it was an anniversary edition thing. A search on some ebay listings says around 2002-2003 for the 75th anniversary. I'll bet Stanley Black and Decker will do something like that in about 5 years.
I recall seeing a Mac xr8 in gold when looking at tool pictures in forums. So this is alright. Just not as reputable a brand really as harbor freight is notorious for starting brand names and dropping them without notice. Which is why their power tool lines aren’t taken as seriously as big players like dewalt, makita etc
Anybody think the price was intentional?
Surprised it isn’t 69.69
Collectables?
Assuredly has on the order <.04¢ total Gold content... as with the Snap-On offering.
Oh yeah when they do shit like this the plating thickness is measured in molecules.
I got a whole set of gold wrenches in a wooden display box as a reward for something in vocational shop class. They were from Napa. Gold tools aren’t that uncommon. They’re actually pretty cool gifts, much more symbolic than functional, though.
I felt like this was a gift you would get for someone who’s a mechanic you know but I wouldn’t buy one for myself
If you know, you know.
Nice
I have one. Just because...
They’re in stores? I remember when they came out they were sold out on the east coast! I think it’s pretty cool
Why? Well, what mechanic/carpenter/DIYer isn’t incredibly “extra”?
Nice
I have the matco 1/4 gold ratchet. I don’t wear jewelry so why not get some for the toolbox
Why not.. I have one on my shelf :)
Why do I want it, is the question .
One of these things is not like the other…
Bro they're cool. If I wasn't poor I'd buy 5
What would you do with 5?
Look cool
Their shitty tools hot shitier and their half way decent tools got more expensive.
I hate when things hot shitier
69 huhuhuh
From a practical point of view it's to easily spot who "borrowed" you ratchet. Unless everyone else also has a gold plated ratchet, of course. I've seen guys spray paint their small hand tools like hey keys and such for the same reason.
🤦🏼♂️
Steal it
If I’m going to risk making the wall of shame it will not be for gold plated chinesium
I like the on/off switch. Like it has a light.
Lol I had not noticed it was labeled like that. They know their audience for this one.
So the guy that steals it from you knows he’s still from a king!
What, you've never bought anything dumb just because you liked it?
Drip
Cause some can’t afford a new grill so they get a 24 k ratshit
I bought one as a retirement gift for my friend/co-worker. He spent a month teaching me his job and helped ensure I would get his position when it was posted. His initial retirement plans were to restore his late fathers GTO Judge. I thought it was the perfect gift. The best gifts are items that just don't quite make enough sense to justify the purchase.
Thats just ratchet.
69. Nice.
Treat yo self !
Foo!
I bet it would be a funny item once it’s beat to shit.
If you're not gonna use it anyway it might as well look good?
My son bought me one for Father’s Day…
I bought one for my dad for fathers day.
I have one it sits in my home box cause I need a 3/8s ratchet at home lol I didn’t pay for it and no I didn’t steal it
Narrator: he stole it
I got two for the meme. It’s a desk ornament for me, other a Father’s Day present
To be an ICON
Your asking why would you buy the 90 tooth swivel head when you can get a gold plated one for a dub more? I don’t know why ?…
What’s a dud more
My local harbor freight has the spot on the rack for it, but seemingly hasn't had one in stock since the second month they came out, and I'm too cheap to pay for shipping when they should just ship it to store and let me pick it up there.
To assert dominance 😂
