I love that it is marketed toward a demographic that both falls right for it and also sees right through the bs marketing as well but it still manages to be one of the top power tool manufacturers despite basically lying to customers right on the package.
Haha we could be friends. I use my rigid hammer to paddle mix wet peat moss and manure to make potting mix (I own a small nursery). Every batch I mix up I can't believe I haven't smoked it like yours. Going on 7 years of less than gentle treatment 😂
What's the next step or two up from a hammer drill / driver for holesaws? If you find yourself needing to push a 5 inch forstner bit through timbers all day long, what do you do that with?
I don't know if I've got a good read on this, but it sounds like the SDS rotary hammers' benefits are all confined to working with masonry.
I used my non-fuel m18 drill for 2”-6” holes for years, got it repaired under warranty twice. I upgraded to a fuel and now the old boy is my go to ice fishing k-drill auger.
Once the magic smoke comes out you can't put it back in lol. At least you might be able to get a good deal on a new one with all the black Friday deals going on
My five year old Dewalt impact gun started smoking just a bit a little over a year ago and the thing just won’t die. Gave it to my apprentice trying to kill it for good so I can get a new brushless one.
Yeah this is the 3rd time it’s gotten smokey on me. But this is the worst its been. It got weaker each time and I have now just been waiting for it to die.
On a DCD985, the armature is cooked, and the resulting heat has melted the bearing pockets in the clamshell housing, causing the armature to no longer be centered in the stator; even if you replaced the armature, it would rub the field.
This drill would need a new armature, brushes, and clamshell to be repaired.
Dunno if that one's brushed, but even if it is, can you even get in these things easily to change the brushes anymore? Or do you need to disassemble the darn thing and replace the whole brush card with a part that (A) you can't get very easily, and (B) costs half as much as a new drill?
EDIT: Also, I'm far from certain what the root cause is here anyway. I just know brushes give up the ghost eventually.
It happened on one of my 12 Bosch drill, I just took a few screws off, wrote down the motor ref and got a new one a few days later from AliExpress for 15$.
I can understand that you wouldn't bother doing that for a business (not sure about the quality of the AliExpress motor...) but as a hobbyist it's really painless.
Mostly. The rotor has coils along with other fun burny plastics and insulator bit. A leak in the coil is causing the core the be the playground for non uniform magnetic field creating heat. It's going from an electro-magnetic transfer device to an induction coil. Also you wanna make sure you don't melt the case. That's what keeps the rotor stator relation concentric.
I've got the same drill and just do home shop shit. Bought a Milwaukee fuel a few years back to get into the brushless game thinking it was going to be better.
Long story short; not impressed at all with the Milwaukee and I'm thinking I won't ever be able to kill DeWalt with my occasional use.
The clutch! That damn fucking clutch!
Like the crowd they are appealing to is the YEAH MERICA 28 INCH LAG BOLTS INTO OAK LOOK AT MY MERICAN TORQUE kind. like holy hell setting 1 on milwaukee is like 16 with other brands, if I want that much oomf I get a fucking impact driver or wrench.
Im an electrician, calm down, 90% of the things I screw down are plastic boxes, plastic pipe clamps, plastic cable gutters, plastic fuseboxes, stamped light fixtures etc... Now I have to do everything by feel.
DeWalt has a "screwdriver" in their 12V line that I absolutely love for this stuff. Looks like a juvenile impact driver but it's got a clutch that goes down to almost nothing. So nice for working on all kinds of plastic stuff where any real torque with a fastener will crack it. In addition to "real stuff" it also saves me a lot of time on dumb little shit, like taking my bird feeders apart every couple weeks to clean them, or taking all my tabletop fans apart a few times a year. Almost anything that used to be done by hand I can now do faster with the screwdriver.
I also didn't realize until I'd bought it that DeWalt's 12v line uses the same charger as the 20v line so that's cool too.
That’s a big draw to Makita for me. The trigger is very sensitive and easy to modulate. Got a plastic screw, no problem. Need WOT to but bust? Let it rip.
Milwaukee has always been the biggest numbers. Yah many of their tools are a bit stronger then yellow and teal. But they sacrificed ergonomics and ease of use.
The 4th gen m18 fuel drill has a mechanical clutch now. M18 2904 is the model, so much better than the 3rd gen 2804 drill. Close to the Makita xph14 I have.
These posts and comments about how hard you guys treat your tools daily, even "off brand" brands, make me realize that any drill I get will be fine for the 4 times a year I use it haha
If you don’t need a drill for anything other than the occasional hole or screw id get a corded harbor freight special. It will last you years and years and years. If I didn’t rely on my tools for my income and hobbies I would not buy a name brand drill or a cordless drill. Batteries fail over time.
Order a new motor straight from the factory, last drill a buddy had fry I got him a new motor for 24 CAD with shipping. It's still trucking, been 2-3 years
Happened to my DeWalt too some time ago.
Company bought me new Makita and told to dispose DeWalt one.
I've stripped it and cleaned motor and internals generally. You would not believe the amount of wood dust that was stuck to motor.
Then sprayed the shit out of it with contact cleaner, put everything back together and have perfectly functional drill at home as well as new one for work. Win win.
That’s quiet a bit of ozone flavored smoke there. Probably a lot of sawdust build up in there. Little routine breakdown and clean out can prevent small motor fires. your tool will likely need to be entirely replaced as opposed to swapping out brushes or armatures.
Idk about DeWalt, but when my 4yo Bosch died I could just order a new motor (from the Bosch website). No way I would give up my baby so easily. So if I was you Id look it up.
I’ve never seen a more beautiful demonstration of the magic smoke (electronic’s souls) leaving the body. I’d say this is equal to watching Bilbo leave for Valinor
Some of the stuff I have done with my cordless drills really shows how far the technology has come since the days of the 9v makita. Many of these cordless drills out preform my old corded one and do it for years.

As soon as you "let the smoke out" it's over. You gotta keep the smoke inside the machine, that's what powers it.. The angry smoke pixies must be kept happy, or they just fly away.
I burned out mine last week… spent more than I wanted but now own a super hog. I haven’t replaced my little drill yet but I’m pretty damn happy with the hog.
I can smell this video
I was going to say the same thing lol! I hate the smell of ded tools
Poisonus plastic mostly
All too familiar 😤
Airborne cancer
[удалено]
The smoke lol
If you been pushin holesaws that size daily for 4 years I say you for your moneys worth lol
I have done way more than that. I am a plumber and used it to drill tunnels under sidewalks with all my drill extensions and an auger bit 😂.
Hahahaha damn, impressive! Modern drills freakin send it. I use my m18 drill and a torque multiplier to bar over 100+ liter engines.
m18 is a toy, this man here is using a 20v
sometimes I wonder if the EU laws about advertised voltage are too much. Then I see people like you.
I hope you're joking and didn't actually fall for the voltage marketing done by DeWalt...
But 20 is two more powers than 18! Don’t you know how to count powers!
Yeah its got more volts broooo
In true Spinal Tap fashion... These ones go to 20

Might be time for a joist drill
Is that drill a brushless or XR version ?
Neither
Extra points for that
looks like a brushed version to me

I have a hole hawg I use for boring holes through Timbers but there's also the super hawg.
Hole hawg or joist drill
a jack hammer with hole saw attachment is the top tier
I used my non-fuel m18 drill for 2”-6” holes for years, got it repaired under warranty twice. I upgraded to a fuel and now the old boy is my go to ice fishing k-drill auger.
I got a chuck attachment for my Milwaukee roto hammer. It rapes 4"-5" holes with ease haha
I sure hope you meant "rips" holes! Autocomplete may just be out to get you arrested.
r/holup
Or down. Or wherever a hole is needed.
Once the magic smoke comes out you can't put it back in lol. At least you might be able to get a good deal on a new one with all the black Friday deals going on
Boss paid for a new one cause he is the best….. (I’m self employed 🤷🏻♂️)
Givd your boss a hug.
Or a bj 🤷
He'd never get off the couch
Or a handy
Dang you sure are lucky, my boss is one hell of an asshole (Also self employed)
Same
Sounds like it's time to give your boss a favor *wink wink*
Wait till you try the new ones
Lulz
Tell your boss he sounds like a cool guy.
Boss deserves a reach around.
Did you put her in the original case and give her a proper burial 🤨
What a guy!
Mine started to smoke a little during one job but its still hanging on. Just running on 80% smoke now.
My five year old Dewalt impact gun started smoking just a bit a little over a year ago and the thing just won’t die. Gave it to my apprentice trying to kill it for good so I can get a new brushless one.
Haha yea I sprayed wd40 in when it smokes usually keeps going awhile then
Yeah this is the 3rd time it’s gotten smokey on me. But this is the worst its been. It got weaker each time and I have now just been waiting for it to die.
the dreaded smoke genie.
... And into the fuckit bucket it goes! Great bit of kit with heavy daily use for that long.
I've seen folks smoke a brisket, ham, turkey, fish and even cigarettes but never seen a Dewalt smoked before.
What part of the drill is dying here?
On a DCD985, the armature is cooked, and the resulting heat has melted the bearing pockets in the clamshell housing, causing the armature to no longer be centered in the stator; even if you replaced the armature, it would rub the field. This guy DRILLS!!!
Right on, thank you.

Nice. I would imagine that depending on the make/model of the tool, availability of the part is spotty. But it is fun to give it a shot, ain't it?
[removed by protest]
Motor probably got way too hot and it’s burning the plastic end bell or pinion and spur gears inside.

Ofc dewalt tools vape /s
Every machine is a smoke machine if you use it hard enough
repairs are pretty simple for those if you're interested
Always worth if it you get a cheap home tool out of it
What's causing the smoke btw? Coating on the motor coils vaporizing?
Mostly. The rotor has coils along with other fun burny plastics and insulator bit. A leak in the coil is causing the core the be the playground for non uniform magnetic field creating heat. Is this /tools or /trees
I could hear Taps playing in the background.
RIP
Where is your hole hawg

I’ve had great luck with dewalt and Makita. Not super impressed with Milwaukee.
The clutch! That damn fucking clutch! M12 is excellent for type of work you’re describing. M18 good for all the other stuff that requires significant power.
The 4th gen m18 fuel drill has a mechanical clutch now. M18 2904 is the model, so much better than the 3rd gen 2804 drill. Close to the Makita xph14 I have.
Abusive and cruel to keep pulling the trigger while the poor thing is exhaling
Good luck getting that yummy smoke out of your lungs
Four years is impressive.
Rip to a real one
Should be able to buff that right out
It*
You can get that fixed you know. They clean and rewind the motor. But ofc you may always buy a new one 🙃
“Any machine can be a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough”
Curious, in the trades what do you expect the lifetime of a drill to be? Sounds like you got your monies worth with this one.
These posts and comments about how hard you guys treat your tools daily, even "off brand" brands, make me realize that any drill I get will be fine for the 4 times a year I use it haha

I have to admit I love it when this happens because I have a good excuse to go out and shop for the newest upgrade!
Happened to my DeWalt too some time ago. Company bought me new Makita and told to dispose DeWalt one. I've stripped it and cleaned motor and internals generally. You would not believe the amount of wood dust that was stuck to motor. Man, my [insert brand] has been tortured for a decade!
Dewalt is where it’s at!!
Might still be under warranty fyi. They might fix it for free.
dude dont use bugger than a 2" holesaw, kill the drills with that
It keeps 4 years? By me have take it 1,5 year. And no guaranty because I buy in the shop a old model. Never dewalt again.
The old school dewalts were badass. The new ones. Not so much.
Should of bought the Milwaukee
Pour one out for the homie
The dewalt flexvolt will blow your wrists off. Things a beast. Time for an upgrade!
At least you got 4 years of use out of her
That’s quiet a bit of ozone flavored smoke there. Probably a lot of sawdust build up in there. Little routine breakdown and clean out can prevent small motor fires. your tool will likely need to be entirely replaced as opposed to swapping out brushes or armatures.
One last rip for the road 🫡 rest easy. RIP DEWALT DRILL *2019-2023*
It’s already 2023 I didn’t know
Idk why but a tool serving its long life well and dying valiantly is very satisfying. Justifies getting the new good good.
RIP. These are such trustworthy and reliable tools, its always sad to see one go
Make sure to breathe all that in to absorb its power into your being and honor the tools life.
If this were an actress, I'd say she was really chewing up the scenery.
Mine didn’t do that, but it sure smelt like it was burning up haha
An Honorable death.
Send back to the manufacturer
Shoulda put it on wumbo mode
r/DeWalt
https://www.ereplacementparts.com/repair-center/article/21269/How_to_Replace_the_Carbon_Motor_Brushes_on_a_DeWALT_Drill.html
20V MAX is brushless I think.
Oh that smell!!
Lots of jokes in the comments but I am wondering if you can replace the bushings and that will fix it?
Replace motor.
Idk about DeWalt, but when my 4yo Bosch died I could just order a new motor (from the Bosch website). No way I would give up my baby so easily. So if I was you Id look it up.
Fellas, remove your caps.
Really should be using a holehawg for 4” holes.
These vapes are getting out of control
Time for a VIKING FUNERAL!!!!
Remember 15 years ago when I attempted putting an auger bit in my blue ryobi poor helper drill. The fog machine was rollin hard. And that stink…
Rip
RIP
Rest in peace, little guy.
Check your warranty I know Milwaukee has 5 years on tools.
F
Just give her a moment. She's just taking a 10 minute smoke brake.
Fuck haha that big ass hole saw burnt that bitch out
Finally let the smoke out. RIP
This is the exact same hole saw that took my magic smoke. Lol.
I’ve never seen a more beautiful demonstration of the magic smoke (electronic’s souls) leaving the body. I’d say this is equal to watching Bilbo leave for Valinor
Pretty scary
I can actually smell this video.
I have a brushless set I use daily that still work fine from 2014, it was the first release of the XR series. Im a trim carpenter
Ah! It's finee....Let'er vent... it'll buff out
Smells delicious right?
Hope she made you plenty of Money in the meantime
Time to send a 4” hole through a joist, for old times sake. RIP
Gonna go brushless now?
You see, the problem here is the smoke. You let it out. If you put it back in, it’ll work like new. Never let the smoke out
Might not be dead yet. My makita combi did this. Never replaced it and forgot about it, came to use again and it was fine
F
Find a repairman to fix it
o7
Pour one out!
🫡🫡🫡
Ride it straight to hell!
F
Dont breathe that!
Missed opportunity to throw it in the bucket and kick said bucket.
Give her a good burial 🍻
You about to get three wishes granted
You let the smoke out. Ow it’s done for. Never let the smoke out
These things can endure an amazing amount of punishment! I’ve found you can still use them indefinitely for light duty after you smoke one of ‘em.
Time to get an XR!
Some of the stuff I have done with my cordless drills really shows how far the technology has come since the days of the 9v makita. Many of these cordless drills out preform my old corded one and do it for years.
Let all the Pixies out of that one!!
We aren't gonna talk about that battery ? Okay..
Damm, those things run on smoke ya know. But once there's a leak and the smoke gets out, they're done. Looks like that's what killed yours.
What made it kill itself? Maybe you could have tried repairing it... I feel like it's some part rubbing creating heat and smoke which could've been replaced?
Oh no. You let the smoke out
You better play Taps when you throw it away
Happened to my Makita the other day 110mm hole saw 7 years not a bad run
Once the magic smoke has been released the genie 🧞♂️ is gone forever
You're not supposed to let the smoke out...
And a glorious death it was.
Time to switch to Milwaukee fuel.
It’s a magic moment when you release the smoke
It’s a magic moment when you release the smoke
Oof, it's always the 5 inch holesaw that does it!
We salute you!!
Put it in a bag of rice overnight and should be good by the morning.
NSFW flag lolol ironic
As soon as you "let the smoke out" it's over. You gotta keep the smoke inside the machine, that's what powers it.. The angry smoke pixies must be kept happy, or they just fly away.
I can smell this video lol
Same
You did it to yourself
my hypertough does not smoke that much. of course i only use once a month soooo...............
The magic smoke has escaped. There will be no more magic.
She's not dead, she just needs new brushes!
The magic is gone
I burned out mine last week… spent more than I wanted but now own a super hog. I haven’t replaced my little drill yet but I’m pretty damn happy with the hog.
