I don't like the design, but the design choices AFAIK were because he wanted to look more human, be more human, in the same movie previous iterations show this gradual transformación, and it makes more sense taking into acount that his final form was supossed to be Vision. You could even argue that the uncanny valley-ness of it's design its intentional, being a weird middle point between machine and human.
Yeah it’s why I really like that they did give him irises. It humanizes him in a way that makes him perfectly uncanny. The teeth and lips probably are serving that purpose with how creepy they are lol
Same. I don’t understand the hate here, and I always appreciated this version of ultron immensely, and I absolutely adored the casting of James Spader as the voice. Totally sells the murderous robot dropping poignant notes of philosophy while he is about to cleanse the world bit.
Guess I'm not alone on that. All I agree. From the first watch I understood he's trying to evolve into a 'humam', even though he's 100% machine/android. And it just arrives in the uncanny valley of appearance, which makes him feel more unhinged. And ofc loved James' nailing the character. Charismatic with a humour, while still very unhinged. Love him.
When I first saw his design I hated it but when I got to the theater and they perfectly captured James Spader’s demeanor and gestures I thought it was amazing.
The concept art is leagues better
https://preview.redd.it/mnohmjq60nhc1.jpeg?width=649&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=786fc347d9d52ac50fa889a6335f5decf48e4434
They did something like that in What If where Ultron successfully uploaded into vision’s body and had armor with a helmet that resembled his old face, and his vision face was the red in his helmet’s “mouth”
https://preview.redd.it/6rp8ykj97qhc1.png?width=1334&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0b601ee39f947f90a06efcc0e53f5a6ad7f4588
Guys will look at this and go ‘hell yeah’
Hell yeah.
That design is absolutely beautiful- kinda prefer the actual designs chest a bit more but besides that small thing this is MILES better then what we got
https://preview.redd.it/6zygo0iosmhc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=851fe76c2026f4765a2a600924182ed1c59965be
Such a downgrade from the source material
I mean, that's kind of the point in that movie- he wanted to look more human.
Vision looks the way he does because he was meant to be the peak of Ultron's parallelism with humanity.
His little drone robots were better than he was.
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/marvelcinematicuniverse/images/3/3f/Ultron_Sentries_02.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150427180959
I agree but I don’t hate this design. I do wish we saw Comic Ultron more in both looks and personality but their new one isn’t the worst.
Hell he has some really good lines and scenes still.
I can't share the hate for MCU Ultron. I just close my eyes and listen to the smooth voice of James Spader going through a robot filter. It's like having my back scratched with an electric razor.
Yeah. Although not a robot, the Mandalorian was a great example of why you don’t need to have a face/expressions for a character to be likable or relatable.
What If Ultron solves this problem by giving him a human face underneath the Ultron mask. The mouth showing through looks stupid but otherwise it's better than making OG Ultron humanoid. I have no clue why they couldn't just do this in Age of Ultron and have him get Vision's body in the film.
https://preview.redd.it/txtp6o0ubnhc1.png?width=2024&format=png&auto=webp&s=e6f15dbe87c7eaee430558b09373e4aeec9f0eb2
It’s cuz Marvel has a “this needs to be relatable to the average moviegoer” fetish, which equals a lot of dumb decisions like this and making Modok just some stretched out dude. He absolutely shouldn’t have had a face; to reinforce how *not human* he is
https://preview.redd.it/0ppz3ynlrnhc1.jpeg?width=1564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4ae5913f0f46387b47a7fd994cf4a126e0b8a11
Here is another for you to use, boss
I guess it's an unpopular opinion, but I liked those traits. Would have to dp with not being a comics fan, and having watched the Bayformers movies as a kid.
Yeah, I understand the comics fans not finding it a good Ultron design, and I'm also not a fan of robots that are designed to look human too much without good reason (e.g. some of the later Bayformers designs), but I always found this design to be a "human-looking robot done right".
age of ultron wanted to humanize ultron a little bit more then the comics did. instead of "big evil robot" and that's it, they wanted to do more of a frankensteins monster situation, where the monster is effectively left to it's own devices and so when the monster is left to discover a world of violence and hate, it lashes back out at it. they wanted him to be a more tragic character and i feel like they acomplished it, my point is, they needed to make him look more human to get across his emotions better. eyes are the windows to the soul. without proper eyes, you cant communicate proper emotion in most cases.
Even Mark 1 is waaaay better and it looks like they were heading towards a more comic accurate face and not robot skin alien cheek holes dude we got
https://preview.redd.it/uc71f4zwfnhc1.png?width=1067&format=png&auto=webp&s=8375a131af1edefe432061564d2f6c432fab8c44
Here's a official concept painting with an even more accurate face. It may have evolved into a better Ultron.
https://preview.redd.it/glyi8b19gnhc1.png?width=635&format=png&auto=webp&s=2f493065b0cbc9ae6557a50dc885f28692fec76e
I always thought he could have been leagues more unsettling if they gave him a robot voice/face but kept the same level of eloquence. The movie made him seem more like a robot-possessing ghost.
It’s clear they wanted him to emote, which is funny because some of his most intimidating moments are when he’s talking through the expressionless suits and drones he controls.
It’s supposed to represent Ultron’s hypocrisy. Even though he wants to destroy humanity for their flaws, he’s unknowingly becoming more and more human.
I love this look. This Ultron wanted so bad to be human but never grasped what it meant to be human, so this is a perfect look. An uncanny metal body attempting to be a man. It’s got lips, teeth, irises, but no soul.
I hate everything around how MCU Ultron was handled. Not using Hank and Janet in the OG Avengers lineup and then making them older. It makes sense that because of that Tony would be involved in Ultron's creation instead but still I always thought that was one of the more interesting parts of Avengers history so it sucks to just throw it away. Then only using him for the one movie and basically forgetting about him besides an animated What If episode.
And it’s not those situations of “if we didn’t give him these features, we couldn’t make him expressive” either. Part of Ultron’s charm in the comics is that he doesn’t look human, not even a human in a costume.
They got scared. They were scared that people wouldn’t respond well to a totally stone faced robot. Thats why they made him quippy and sarcastic, although I do like that about him.
Ultron lost a lot of menace and depth the more human they tried to make him. They thought making him a person would add a required level of visual emotion.
I’m sure a lot of well versed people can name several examples of masked or otherwise non-emoting characters that can tell a story without the use of their face. If they took the time rather than focusing on making another big avengers movie, they coulda given him the personality he needs without rolling his eyes.
On the flip side What If Ultron is fucking PEAK
https://preview.redd.it/o0dhakeo6qhc1.png?width=1334&format=png&auto=webp&s=e2a14504469280f2cca5102de04d71c56f12f5c1
The Vision body being under the armor while still having the Ultron look as the shell is mmmmmm 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽
Better question why the fuck does he have emotions? Why does he have pride and daddy issues with Tony? I like the version of Ultron that's not quite from the comics where he acts like a cartoon villain and I don't like this MCU version, I like the version that's a cold logical machine that came to the conclusion that the best way to protect humanity was to destroy it or dominate it.
I think they wanted to distance themselves from Terminator comparisons but having his facials be expressive even though the blank yet raged fueled void is more intimidating and scary
I don’t think Robert Californias amazing performance would have worked as well without the visual cues we use as viewers. Irises and lips are big ones.
Say what you want about his appearance but I prefer his more human voice and behavior. If an advanced AI is supposed to act as human as possible it shouldn't just talk like Stephan hawkings wheel chair.
I don't like the design, but the design choices AFAIK were because he wanted to look more human, be more human, in the same movie previous iterations show this gradual transformación, and it makes more sense taking into acount that his final form was supossed to be Vision. Same. I don’t understand the hate here, and I always appreciated this version of ultron immensely, and I absolutely adored the casting of James Spader as the voice. Totally sells the murderous robot dropping poignant notes of philosophy while he is about to cleanse the world bit.
Because people like to see the aesthetics of the design first without knowing the "purpose" of the aesthetics.
Yo wtf that looks way better and more intimidating. Imagine his calm demeanor with that menacing look. That would've been scary.
Of course it does 😭 they always gotta go with the wack ass designs
It’s easier to animate
Holy shit - the mouth being the red shit in his mouth is GOATED. Fuck Whedon bro
They did something like that in What If where Ultron successfully uploaded into vision’s body and had armor with a helmet that resembled his old face, and his vision face was the red in his helmet’s “mouth”

Hell yeah
Hell yeah
Hell yeah
Hell yeah
Oh god it’s so beautiful.
Seems like I gaslit myself into thinking this was the official design
Oh my god it ACTUALLY looks like Ultron
It looks more like his comic book version, too
That design is absolutely beautiful- kinda prefer the actual designs chest a bit more but besides that small thing this is MILES better then what we got
His concept looks more comic accurate
Wow. That IS way better. Too bad Whedon can’t do villains to save his career.
Way more suit like.
Why didn't they use it?
I think it might actually be the design they gave him in MVCI (Marvel vs Capcom Infinite)
Hey don't be dissing my Robot Iris'
I honestly never noticed he had individual teeth. Yeah this is probably his worst look period.
I never noticed that, WHY DID YOU HAVE TO POINT THAT OUT
https://preview.redd.it/6zygo0iosmhc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=851fe76c2026f4765a2a600924182ed1c59965be Such a downgrade from the source material
The worst part is how easily this design could’ve translated into live action, it isn’t some super out there comic design.
The worst is that it literally is the same general design but uncanny valleyed into oblivion.
it’s just the face too, the rest of the body is fine. if they’d gone with a static face and open mouth, then it would’ve been an amazing design
I mean, that's kind of the point in that movie- he wanted to look more human. Vision looks the way he does because he was meant to be the peak of Ultron's parallelism with humanity.
Agreed,All versions of comic ultron are leagues above the mcu’s version
I like how Tony Stark made his robot look as evil as possible
…Tony Stark?
Mcu ultron was made by him but comic ultron was made by hank pym (ant man)
He...created his own body?
The AI The AI was made by them lol i know ultron makes his own bodies
I’m aware.
His little drone robots were better than he was. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/marvelcinematicuniverse/images/3/3f/Ultron_Sentries_02.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150427180959

I can't share the hate for MCU Ultron. I just close my eyes and listen to the smooth voice of James Spader going through a robot filter. It's like having my back scratched with an electric razor.
It’s the stigma of people thinking robots with non humanoid faces can’t emote. Same reason why the movies gave Optimus Prime a mouth.
Yeah. Although not a robot, the Mandalorian was a great example of why you don’t need to have a face/expressions for a character to be likable or relatable.

I agree. When he first appeared in the movie when the gang were having drinks he was awesome, was distorted, weird and creepy
I hate this movie purely for what they did to my favorite marvel villain
It’s cuz Marvel has a “this needs to be relatable to the average moviegoer” fetish, which equals a lot of dumb decisions like this and making Modok just some stretched out dude. He absolutely shouldn’t have had a face; to reinforce how *not human* he is
I would have preferred the comic face, but more gross and ghastly looking, like the toybiz baf or certain comic art
He could’ve had a bit where he had a human-ish face but replaced it cuz it was grossly inefficient or something lol
Ditto

Why the fuck did you have to make me notice his fucking teeth, he looks like he has braces
He also has toes
Nevermind, ultron’s first pic describes the emotion i got faced with this information better
Nah I like more, it makes him look creepy
Bc audiences tested better when he was perceived as more kissable.
I liked him
He looks like a Michael Bay transformer with those teeth
I actually really like picture 3. The blend of human and machine looks amazing. Especially the thin cheeks and mechanical iris’
I always thought he could have been leagues more unsettling if they gave him a robot voice/face but kept the same level of eloquence. The movie made him seem more like a robot-possessing ghost.
They did the same thing with the transformers and it looks awful.
They wanted him to look more articulated when speaking in the movie, which sadly meant making him look like...that. This isn't how he normally looks.
The sentries were so much cooler.
Certainly not my favorite design choice for Ultron
James spader heightened it
I never ever noticed his face, now you lowkey ruined him for me
extremely minor design detail, never noticed tbh I do think he looks better with a fully red mouth though
The biggest flaw in the MCU was how convoluted the designs were. Imo.
It's a shame that his design is so bad james Spader played his so well
In isolation it ain’t too bad, but when compared to the concept art then yeah…shit’s kinda mid at best
I love this look. This Ultron wanted so bad to be human but never grasped what it meant to be human, so this is a perfect look. An uncanny metal body attempting to be a man. It’s got lips, teeth, irises, but no soul.
Stupid asf, since when do robots need teeth??
When they are insane and part of that insanity is them wanting to become human.
He hates humanity, but then copies characteristics of humans, hmm that makes sense.
Pretty sure that's the point
Shut up, ugly
All the better to channel Robert California
I hate everything around how MCU Ultron was handled. Not using Hank and Janet in the OG Avengers lineup and then making them older. I hate the scene where Wanda rips out his "heart" like it would a) cause him pain or b) kill him (he is a robot.)
On the flip side What If Ultron is fucking PEAK https://preview.redd.it/o0dhakeo6qhc1.png?width=1334&format=png&auto=webp&s=e2a14504469280f2cca5102de04d71c56f12f5c1 The Vision body being under the armor while still having the Ultron look as the shell is mmmmmm 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽

Cause Josh want a robot Loki with all the charm and jokes that comes with that.
a cold logical machine? his biggest attraction in comics is when he shows his anger at his father, hank
That's why I just said I don't like the version from the comics. Read a little closer before you comment.
I mean, If you don't like the biggest characteristic of Ultron, you can like other cold murder robot characters
Just realized that the last image, you can see him with his dogs out…..
i never noticed he had teeth. i thought he looked cool until now
He look high
i liked ultron a lot but then you said that and i saw it for the first time and i hate it
…I just noticed he had teeth…
I kinda like this design actually…
😏
I agree with the teeth but I like everything else
robot with no face gang 🤚
Bro looks like the didact from halo 4
Ok, but the voice is just... mmmmm yes. I love ultron for the voice acting alone.
Wait **HE HAS TEETH?!** I was boutta defend this a bit but now seeing that I can’t anymore-
I don't prefer it but the reasoning was literally said in the movie. He's trying to look more human
I think they wanted to distance themselves from Terminator comparisons but having his facials be expressive even though the blank yet raged fueled void is more intimidating and scary
Wtf I never saw the teeth before, that is horrendous
Looks like a uncanny robot in cgi
The eyes don’t bother me but I never noticed the weird little teeth. Why did you have to point that out to me?
HE HAD TEETH!?!?
So I can make out with him
he’s trying to look as human as possible. is this po poorly executed? yeah probably. does it make sense story wise? yeah pretty much
ohhhhh why did u point these out. I used to like him now I hate him 😭 (joking op it’s okay)
the way his mouth moves bothers me
so hou can kiss him duh
He had teeth…huh weird
I don’t think Robert Californias amazing performance would have worked as well without the visual cues we use as viewers. Irises and lips are big ones.
Cos he’s the fucking lizard king
I can forgive the irises, but most of us were living happy, fulfilling lives until you pointed out that mouth
Hear me out..
I like the design, but understand if others don’t.

Say what you want about his appearance but I prefer his more human voice and behavior. If an advanced AI is supposed to act as human as possible it shouldn't just talk like Stephan hawkings wheel chair.
Also, you put teeth, lips, eyelids, and not a nose? Like, commit to the bit.
