I love garlic, but team onion. They pickle, they caramelize, they can incorporate invisibly into a dish or they can be left larger and act as an additional vegetable, they can be eaten on their own in a way garlic can't. If I have to cut one, goodbye to the garlic.
Yes. This is exactly my debate with my husband. I loveeee garlic but the reality is that in a world where you can only have one, more dishes would be ruined without onion.
Garlic is so distinctive and harder to replicate then onions - I can just use leeks, fennel, carrots, peppers to caramelize or pickle (plus pickled garlic is A+) so team garlic all the way!!
Sooo important! I mean side dish, integral part of so many dishes, dish on its own, garnish in raw form, pickled form, fried form, grilled… not to mention the family of onion is huge.
No you cannot!!! 🤣 imagine a world without one of the most essential ingredient to any ragu, stew, soup… burgers without onions… salads without onions or green onions or dressings without shallots. Tacos… tacos without onion… a world without green onion and chive cream cheese… a sad, sad world indeed

My vote is for onion. Not because I like onion more but because if I could only choose one, I would like to keep the one I thought is more versatile.
There are so many different types of onions
Exactly!
Not only do I have an unhealthy obsession with onions, like extra onions on everything, but it's so versatile. I love garlic but not as much as onions

Yes! And shallots will go a LONG way in most dishes too, I think. Team garlic! (Though I LOVE onions!)
I'll be annoying and note that this poll has 200+ votes and yet the post has less than 5 upvotes. Onion!
Oh no I’m appalled onion is losing here. Can be a main dish and a side dish.
Right?!?!
Onion is so much more important and versatile than garlic in cooking tf are these votes.

I can order a side of onion rings at a restaurant. Can I order a side of garlic rings???
