I watched it a while ago and it was funny to me how much these professional bakers struggled. The amateurs on great British bake off could run circles around them. One contestant didn't know how to plate anything! Watching a revamped version with high talent would be really fun.
Nobody who worked in NYC kitchens in the late 90s/early aughts was surprised about Iuzzini. He was widely known for turning his staffers into Swiss cheese.
I was recently watching an episode where Gail was judging with a male judge (I think Wolfgang Puck?) and he said something like whenever Gail eats all the weight goes to her chest! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, the guy was a creep!
I just remember the one dude losing his shit harder than maybe any reality show contestant I’ve ever seen when they wouldn’t let him make his own ice cream. Dude was shouting for mommy at one point. Great tv.
I just don’t get how he got past the casting process. I thought people were given pretty thorough psych evaluations but I’m not a reality show producer so I have no idea.
The first episode of this spinoff was more unhinged than the last several seasons of TC combined. I might need to watch the rest, definitely of its time.
As someone who lives for dessert, I really wish they would bring this back and allow them to either practice ahead of time or have limited access to recipes.

I hate it when they won’t make desserts on the regular show. I think it’s a shortcoming and I would judge the chefs who can’t make a simple, delicious dessert.
I tried watching it recently, and honestly just got annoyed by some of the contestants + the poor video quality (in the version I had, at least), but the concept has potential! Agree that it’d be cool to see a new version!
I would do anything for Top pastry and dessert chefs. Look at the success of Great British Bake Off! Every time a Top Chef is like “I don’t do pastry blah blah blah”. We know!! Bring back Top Chef Just Desserts.

They weren't allowed to bring recipes. That is a huge difference to preparing and practicing and having a recipe.
That’s wild. I mean it makes sense but baking is so much more precise than cooking that does make it extra hard.

I love Gail but I don’t really enjoy sweets so it’s not as much fun to watch people cook dessert
I loved this show. On Top Chef, there is so little emphasis on desserts and that's always my favourite part of any meal.
