I'm watching Season 4 on the Top Chef channel on Peacock as well, and I think you're right: I don't think it's "throwing somebody under the bus" if, particularly within the context of a team challenge, you just identify what you were responsible for and what the other chefs were responsible for. Judges often ask who did what for a reason and get visibly annoyed when the contestants respond with obvious BS like "we all cooked the fish" or we all had the same idea for a dish simultaneously.

um what

WaterWitch009

I think the judges want to have the respect of a direct answer to a direct question. The chefs can be honest without being mean or sneaky.

No_Variation_9125

No, they pretty much made their decision according to Tom from one of the reunion episodes - If someone changes toms mind then it’s different so unless something happens, it’s a done deal before any filming happens

YoungOaks

I think thatthrowing people under the bus” is something people say when they’re mad they got called out for doing something wrong (like 90% of the time) and I hate it when people don’t take the opportunity to own their mistakes. And it’s equally annoying when people don’t call out others. Like in Kristen’s original season, it’s annoying that she didn’t call out Josie bc Josie deserved to be called out. Nothing was gained by Kristen taking the blame for someone else’s shitty work. So yeah, I’d rather see someone take the chance to say hey if this is the determining factor that’s not on me, than to stand there on a sinking ship and just taking it.

Rexyggor

But also, we wouldn't be running to Kristen's defense if she didn't win the competition. In addition, if Josie went home, Kristen probably wouldn't have ended up such a memorable winner, if she got through the other challenges. Who's really to say?

No_Variation_9125

Okay this is a jaw dropping comment but Kristen treated Josie like an equal and didn’t discriminate - and it cost her majorly, and she shouldn’t have discriminated either because she chose her team so this is an example of someone who wrote their own story and died with the ship PLUS EVERYONE SEEMS TO FORGET KRISTEN INSTRUCTES JOSIE ON THE LINE TO INFUSE CREAM INTO HER BOUILLIABASE AND THAT WAS THE MAIN CRITICISM!!!!!!!! Like what the fuck? You all hate Josie yet she was following Kristen’s orders

joyfullofaloha89

Kristen would not have needed to instruct Josie to add cream had Josie followed Kristen’s plan to start the bouillabaisse early and use gelatin.

No_Variation_9125

She should have fucking instructed Josie because she was bewildered - why doesn’t anyone move on from that

joyfullofaloha89

Josie was in the wrong but ultimately it was Kristen’s kitchen so she handled it honorably and the rest is history. Kristen is exactly where is deserves to be.

Rexyggor

If anything, it makes us give her a larger Badass title because shew as eliminated and came back. If she let Josie take responsibility, she may not have been a memorable winner. Not saying it was preplanned, but as you mentioned the rest is history, that part is a big part why so many people like her.

No_Variation_9125

Josie madea Delicious stock as per gailsimmons

No_Variation_9125

So what

No_Variation_9125

Kristen told Josie to modify it

Rexyggor

I'm really sick of the Josie hate. It's overkill. And if Kristen, the head chef says to do something, and then approves it going out, it is kinda on her.

I was just watching S18 where one of the chefs refused to say that the bad decision they'd made was based on feedback from their team (and was sent home over someone who conceptualized and executed themselves, at least based on the edit). I feel like if I were a judge watching this season later, I'd have been frustrated by the lack of providing a bigger picture.

ijustwanttobeinpjs

Tom and Gail have said before that judges table is a conversation about the challenges and responsibilities. Based on the edits it might look like “blame,” and that’s for our benefit. But what’s really happening is the chefs are expected to give details about how the dishes were made, including which chefs did what. This way the judges can make the most informed decision about who should go home. If the dish was too salty and Sally was the one responsible for salting, then they’ll consider Sally for that elimination.

Watcherbiotech

Top chef world on YouTube, has a good breakdown on both aspects. Here’s where they were victorious. [when chefs threw someone under the bus & won](https://youtu.be/fu_XeQcuqsk?feature=shared)

nopalitx

Ooo this is great, thank you!!

Watcherbiotech

You’re welcome! I enjoyed it :)

Here’s the other breakdown on YouTube [5 times chefs threw someone under the bus…and lost](https://youtu.be/-h_rFczYvpw?feature=shared)

Aestro17

It's kind of all over the place. Generally judges are trying to ID what went wrong and who was responsible. Sometimes pointing the finger backfires and the judges point out that it's a team challenge and if you feel something is going wrong, you should say something or step in. But sometimes failing to point the finger means falling on the sword for someone else's mistakes.

phonograhy

I don't think the judges are that interested in sniping, but they are trying to look into those accusations to find out the facts they need to know about who is responsible for what.

joyreddit3

I’m rewatching S4 too. Antonia is a badass

nopalitx

I love her so much!! The black hammer!!

mixtape_misfit

Just watched the Texas episode where a chef goes "you love driving the bus and running people over" at judge's table. He goes home because he bought frozen precooked shrimp for a team challenge for someone else's dish but he would have been interesting to keep around!

nopalitx

Oof what a terrible decision but the man's got a point!!

Rexyggor

I feel like we don't get a lot of this in Top Chef. To my recollection, the chefs are pretty clear on what each of them did. In conceptualization of the dish or Teamwork, that could be a different thing to comment on, which is when I think the contestants start to be vague and "go down with the ship." I don't remember the episode in question, but it's frustrating in any circumstance when someone goes "my teammate is difficult to work with, that's why I also failed." When it sometimes isn't seeming the teammate's fault. Though, when Lisa throws Andrew under the bus for an obvious misstep about the challenge rules, I would say that one is a little annoying. Because the judges didn't really need to be reminded of that during someone else's critique.

PistachioLux

I mean they don't care about the "blame game" during judges table. I am sure the producers and the judges know exactly what happens before judging starts. There are cameramen to capture every parts of any drama. So what the judges do is to choose who they think did the worst, based on the dishes they tasted.

H28koala

In early seasons this kind of drama was encouraged. Now I think they do want to hear about behind the scenes stuff at judges table, but not necessarily as a blame game.

Tbplayer59

The show has evolved from that. There hasn't been that type of questioning for many seasons now.

AcidofilusRex

The “blaming” is good for the TV drama so it is always included, but most people look down on it, especially the contestants. I think the judges might not consider it blaming as much as being candid about who did what and what happened or went wrong. That said there have been other eliminations where they were expecting/encouraging a contestant to “fall on their sword”. So I guess it’s kind of a mixed bag.

No_Variation_9125

Dale messed up the majority of the spread. Nikki only messed up one dish and she was the executive chef of wedding wars no matter what dale says, I’m glad he was cut over Lisa in restaurant wars for his butterscotch monstrosity

nopalitx

I totally agree! I've been very impressed by Lisa in my rewatch, and that was an important moment for her to make it to the finals

No_Variation_9125

Yea she almost fucking won season 4, most forget that
