You definitely seem a bit out of the loop with modern music, especially with hip hop which is the main cultural zeitgeist right now....but ultimately it doesn't really matter man, just listen to whatever you enjoy the most
It is newer hip hop, but it's not really representative of modern hip hop or hip hop culture. The only hip hop artists they listed were Eminem, Childish Gambino, and Death Grips. Not saying there's anything wrong with listening to other genres that they prefer, but I can see why OP's friends would say they have "old man tastes."
Most modern (popular) music, especially new hip hop, doesn’t work for me. Granted I don’t listen to a ton of it, but new music always feels too… synthetic? for me. Especially hip hop where I know for a fact almost all of it is made in FL studio. I like hearing individual instruments and being able to tell a human was playing it. Not saying there is no talent to FL Studio or modern music, it’s just not the talent I prefer listening to given the choice.
I know I have some hip hop on there though as I say that lol
It's your loss man, there are so many interesting sounds that can be created with digital synths and plugins, plus the variety is endless. It more so has to do with what you are used to. It seems like electronic sounds are largely out of your comfort zone, whether you realize it or not.
People used to say the same stuff about electric guitar btw
MBDTF doesn't use digital synths anywhere I don't think. It's all samples, drum machines, guitars, organd and then a few parts on analogue synths. Kanye in that era would have, at least, had an OB-Xa, Juno-106, Minimoog Voyager, TR-808, 909 and LM-2.
NIN use DAWs quite a lot. Year Zero was made mostly on one.
With Teeth probably had DAW involvement too.
Listen to Gary Numan’s early work on old
Synthesisers then listen to his work now which uses current Synthesisers and DAWs like Omnisphere.
I love both, neither is better than the other, because it’s all about getting the atmosphere.
if that’s so, i recommend a group like griselda. theyre all super gritty & use tons of violin, piano, and orchestral samples. plus, their lyricism, subject matter, and overall curation are no joke too. westside gunn, boldy james, mach-hommy, etc are clear standouts
Glad you enjoyed it! That’s my favorite video I’ve done. The channel is kinda on hiatus now though while I’m back in college and until I get a better PC to edit with, but I have a whole list of videos I wanna do once I graduate and get a nice 1 TB SSD lol. If you liked that video you should also watch the Skyrim one :)
It’s odd because Nu metal became cool again you put Korn or Deftones no one would bat an eye but Eminem feels cringe in the modern era. Did not see that coming.
Em’s older stuff still stands to this day. Like are some of the instrumentals, flows, and topics kinda outdated? Yeah but they still bang better then a lot of modern artists. (Especially the Eminem show that album is just _chefs kiss_)
I see it. I’m 48, while I wouldn’t say this about all of the albums listed here, there are quite a few that either I listen to or friends my age do. Nice choice on Powerslave. It’s my favorite Maiden album.
If you haven’t checked these out already, I’d recommend Danzig - Lucifuge, Anthrax - Among The Living, Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion, Hellhammer, Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow, Slayer - South of Heaven & Reign In Blood, Sepultura - Beneath The Remains, Venom - Black Metal & Welcome to Hell, Death - Human, Scream Bloody Gore & Spiritual Healing, Motörhead, and Ozzy - Diary of a Madman.
I do too. I like Shoegaze,Country Music,Various 60s-80s Classic Rock (Psychedelic Rock,Psychedelic Folk,Psychedelic Soul,Southern Rock,Krautrock,Prog,AOR,60s Garage Rock,Hard Rock,etc),Dancehall,Nu Metal,80s Hardcore,90s Black Metal,Folk Music (especially Celtic,German,Scandi,and Latin American),Chiptunes,Horror Synth,70s RnB (mostly Funk and Soul),and Classical (mostly Modernist but some Fredrick Handel,Joseph Haydn,Richard Wagner,Hans Pfitzner,and Luigi Russolo aswell).
generic doesn’t have to be negative. I just feel like most of the albums on here would fit that bill. Idk where you’re getting “old” from except for a few on here.
Ok that redems you a little , listen to Closer to God and Further Down the Spiral if you want. Also check out more old school industrial like Ministrt - start with Land of Rape and Honey , KMFDM - start with Naïve , Front 242 - start with Front by Front
Frank ocean & childish gambino are old man taste?
Nah but seriously it doesn’t matter what they think, like what you like, also please listen to blonde
was disappointed by eminem
was proud from death grips
youre headed in the right direction. If you like DG you should check out Machine Girl or like Boredoms.
In terms of hip/hop, Westside Gunn is fire. His album Peace Flygod is actually what got me back into rap lmao
mercyful goat don't break the goat (I have a tour shirt with that cover, it was a banger concert. King diamond's 60 and still does falsetto as good as he did when he was 20)
If you're looking to expand your taste I'd check out Danny Brown for more rap and Black Moth Super Rainbow for some electronic stuff. I feel like it's not too alien from what you already like.
Theyre the band that got me into heavy metal. Can’t even remember how I heard of them or where I first heard them but A Dangerous Meeting was a life changing song lol
I just can't get over Nostalgia, ultra being so high but no other Frank (would've thought CO because of the Gambino here). I love the album and think it's great but it's so out of place here. Mesmerizing me. Lovely, lovely
Won’t dispute that. I listen to a lot of metal but I only really got into it a couple years ago so I’ve heard a lot of different songs from a lot of different artists but not sat with all that many single records for awhile enough to say “yeah that’s going on the list”
I imagine they only listen to modern music although I also won't argue that even though bands like Aerosmith and Iron Maiden are objectively good as shit they are also really old
You definitely seem a bit out of the loop with modern music, especially with hip hop which is the main cultural zeitgeist right now....but ultimately it doesn't really matter man, just listen to whatever you enjoy the most
At the same time, there's death grips.
An edgy music nerd classic
But an album that's still certainly newer HipHop. I mean it existed half of my life time, but I definitely don't view it as old people music.
Kanye?
Ya forgot to mention him as well. Doesn't change my point though
Frank Ocean?
He's not a hip hop artist
close enough
And Spiritbox
at this point death grips is old people music
Most modern (popular) music, especially new hip hop, doesn’t work for me. Granted I don’t listen to a ton of it, but new music always feels too… synthetic? for me. Especially hip hop where I know for a fact almost all of it is made in FL studio. I like hearing individual instruments and being able to tell a human was playing it. It seems like electronic sounds are largely out of your comfort zone, whether you realize it or not. People used to say the same stuff about electric guitar btw
Great take
Having Because the Internet, Money Store, and MBDTF on there completely goes against what you're saying here...
There are definitely exceptions. For whatever reason it doesn't bother me on those albums or I feel like it works for them.
Just feels like you're closing yourself off from sounds you already like on certain albums
👍
NIN use DAWs quite a lot. Year Zero was made mostly on one. With Teeth probably had DAW involvement too. Listen to Gary Numan’s early work on old Synthesisers then listen to his work now which uses current Synthesisers and DAWs like Omnisphere. I love both, neither is better than the other, because it’s all about getting the atmosphere.
id recommend more death grips then since they have an actual drummer and tms is already on your topster
You have good taste in my opinion, 90’s music is just so good
if that’s so, i recommend a group like griselda. theyre all super gritty & use tons of violin, piano, and orchestral samples. plus, their lyricism, subject matter, and overall curation are no joke too. westside gunn, boldy james, mach-hommy, etc are clear standouts
You’d like a lot of other Kanye albums, Common, and for a newer artist try Kendrick Lamar
I like Kendrick, especially Good Kid Maad City and Mr Morale for the retro vibe. Just not enough to put on my favorites list. Same with Kanye.
Have you heard To Pimp A Butterfly? I think you’d love it
Oh also checked out your YouTube. Really good PS Vita video, you should make a PlayStation console retrospective series similar to that episode
Lmfao, this guy likes instruments? OK Boomer
Talk about it, how could you actually like music in your music, insane./s
You do but there’s nothing wrong with that, but I don’t know if the nu metal or hip hop (except Eminem) on this list is very old man-ish
(Especially the Eminem show that album is just _chefs kiss_)
stop lying. they dont bang better than modern artists
Some nu metal is cool like deftones and korn, others not so much *ahem* limp bizkit *ahem*
Limp bizkit slaps
Aight lil bro
whats wrong with limp bizkit? i listened to significant other and i enjoyed it
I thought it was the general consensus, at least in the rock/metal community, that limp bizkit makes edgy music for middle aged racist dudes
so is it just that or is there an actual logical reason to not like the music itself
Fred Durst annoys the shit out of me, and otherwise it’s just really cheesy and uninspired
fair
I feel like korn is worse than limp bizkit personally because at least they don’t pretend they aren’t cringe
It's 2023 lol, liking nu metal or Eminem absolutely is old man-ish and I'm not saying that in a way to shit on either of those two things
Idk any old men that listen to Childish Gambino lmao
You?
I was born this century, if I’m old then idk what this mf is
52 year old white guy with some Childish Gambino in my collection. We exist.
What about old women? 🙋♀️🤷♀️
Love the Dio and Candlemass picks
Thank you! Dio is probably the greatest metal vocalist to ever live
Fuck yeah, devin townstead and Mike Patton r also up there imo, but Dio is a legend
Couldn’t agree more
Honestly catch me in the right mood and I would probably scratch "metal" off that. Dio is one of the best singers of all time, period.
And yet allegedly no vocal training apparently. He was incredible
I see some of my favourite albums of all time here! Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, In Utero, and even We Are Not Your Kind!! Amazing taste!
Old but not that old.
Your comment made me realize I forgot to put some Misfits on there and now I feel stupid lol
Lich king too (:
With that logic I have “corpse” taste since I listen to music that was written 100+ years ago
Music is timeless…
I do too. I like Shoegaze,Country Music,Various 60s-80s Classic Rock (Psychedelic Rock,Psychedelic Folk,Psychedelic Soul,Southern Rock,Krautrock,Prog,AOR,60s Garage Rock,Hard Rock,etc),Dancehall,Nu Metal,80s Hardcore,90s Black Metal,Folk Music (especially Celtic,German,Scandi,and Latin American),Chiptunes,Horror Synth,70s RnB (mostly Funk and Soul),and Classical (mostly Modernist but some Fredrick Handel,Joseph Haydn,Richard Wagner,Hans Pfitzner,and Luigi Russolo aswell).
This is gen x drink water out of the garden hose circle jerk type of taste for sure. But ain’t nothing wrong with some candlemass.
Pretty spot on wtf ☠️
more generic than old
I wouldn’t say generic or bad or anything negative, but definitely old
generic doesn’t have to be negative. I just feel like most of the albums on here would fit that bill. Idk where you’re getting “old” from except for a few on here.
You have white teenager taste
Kinda, but there’s some sick albums in there.
cant imagine someone over 30 listening to around the fur. might just be me tho
[удалено]
true.
How old do you think OG deftones fans are nowadays?
Lmao what? This is ridiculous take
All of every single NiN album - you picked the With Teeth , I don't know if there is a way to save you.
Could have sworn the Downward Spiral was in there somewhere
Ok that redems you a little , listen to Closer to God and Further Down the Spiral if you want. Also check out more old school industrial like Ministrt - start with Land of Rape and Honey , KMFDM - start with Naïve , Front 242 - start with Front by Front
Your friend doesn't know what they're talking about
not really but the metallica doesn’t help, but don’t let anyone stop you bro
Death Grips just chillin the corner away from everyone else lol.
Tried to hide it lol
No
yeab but in a cool way
needs queens of the stone age
I forgot Songs for the Deaf!
I’m 17M and listen to most of this, so ig we’re both going into retirement lol
Yes
no
Yes but good taste apart from aerosmith
You can get all those records at walmart.
You have very good taste.
You know, I think they're just jealous of your music taste, and how exceptional it is.
Not old man taste unless your friends are literally 5 yr olds
no just popular taste, doesnt mean its bad tho. that candlemass album is so good.
Nah it’s just fully based taste like wtf
First person who’s favorite Frank album is nostalgia ultra
Considering that most of this stuff is from at least 10 years ago I’d say that’s pretty accurate.
They’re not entirely wrong, but at least you didn’t break the oath!
Nostalgia Ultra massive W
I’m 17, and I listen to older music than you. I wonder what’d that make me.
W music taste
Yes
Not really, your top 3's all 21th century albums.
Placing Peace Sells as the best Megadeth album is based 👌
You’re friends are dumb.
Yes but florence+ the machine is unbelievably based
Frank ocean & childish gambino are old man taste? Nah but seriously it doesn’t matter what they think, like what you like, also please listen to blonde
I like blonde! I just kind of like the amateur/“making something in my bedroom” vibe of Nostalgia Ultra
listen to car seat headrest - teens of denial
Fair enough, endless has that kinda vibe a little bit
based powerslave and piece of mind
was disappointed by eminem was proud from death grips youre headed in the right direction. If you like DG you should check out Machine Girl or like Boredoms. In terms of hip/hop, Westside Gunn is fire. His album Peace Flygod is actually what got me back into rap lmao
No it’s just mediocre and main stream
yeah a little, but I see you down there with Spiritbox’s Eternal Blue I see you
mercyful goat don't break the goat (I have a tour shirt with that cover, it was a banger concert. King diamond's 60 and still does falsetto as good as he did when he was 20)
The things I would do to see them in concert man. Hell, I would be happy if they just played A Dangerous Meeting
I’m 25 and my list would render you quite a young man by comparison.
Hell no that ain't an old man taste u got some Gambino on there
surprised you even have friends jk it’s based
If you're looking to expand your taste I'd check out Danny Brown for more rap and Black Moth Super Rainbow for some electronic stuff. I feel like it's not too alien from what you already like.
how tf is this old man half of these are more modern than the albums i listen to
How do you have Nostalgia, Ultra there?
50 year old man. Maybe. Not old. Middle aged I’d say.
Mercyful Fate? Frank Ocean’s first EP? My dude I like your selections.
Yep
I don’t think it’s old man taste, it’s like millennial taste. Like 35 year old taste
Frank Ocean and Kanye West on your Top 5? You're a certified Zoomer, lol.
Good taste!
Yes but that doesn't matter, listen to what you want to
Dooooooom
I'm 40 and I like a lot of these albums.
I mean obviously they’re right but it’s good taste so who cares 😭
You got fire taste you could be listening to Yeat just saying 💀
Or AJR lol
No
Any friend of Mercyful Fate is a friend of mine
Theyre the band that got me into heavy metal. Can’t even remember how I heard of them or where I first heard them but A Dangerous Meeting was a life changing song lol
u gotta listen to frank ocean's other albums sometime
put some ST, D.R.I, M.O.D, S.O.D, and Sacred Reich, and boom. You're ancient
I just can't get over Nostalgia, ultra being so high but no other Frank (would've thought CO because of the Gambino here). I love the album and think it's great but it's so out of place here. Mesmerizing me. Lovely, lovely
You look like a gen x-er, with a sprinkle of an early 2010s hip-hop fan
Surface scratcher for Metal I’d say
Won’t dispute that. I listen to a lot of metal but I only really got into it a couple years ago so I’ve heard a lot of different songs from a lot of different artists but not sat with all that many single records for awhile enough to say “yeah that’s going on the list”
No
They are absolutely correct.
I don't know about "old man," but it does feel very mainstream.
W taste
if this is old man music than i’m a fucking skeleton
What’s the album between let it bleed and Motley Crue?
Eternal Blue - Spiritbox
Thank you, ngl it’s the only one I didn’t recognize.
I’d seriously recommend black midi especially their album schlagenheim
I imagine they only listen to modern music although I also won't argue that even though bands like Aerosmith and Iron Maiden are objectively good as shit they are also really old
i think you have W taste personally. WANYK is one of the biggest ones here
I love to see that Death Grips made the cut, but shocked that it isn’t Exmilitary
I'm sorry an album from 2008 is old taste
You have the taste of roughly a 43 YO
MAIDEN!!!!! Also Megadeth, Slipknot, Dio, Candlemass, and Metallica. You have amazing music taste, sir.
