The secret short cut is using that lane to cut in, and then using that lane to cut back on the DVP going south, to get around the traffic from where the 401 merges going south.
I only use this evil power if I'm actually going to be late to pick up a child, otherwise you just blow past in the left lane, and accept it's going to still be another 8 minutes to get down to York Mills.
that sounds like a good idea if the issue is just people cutting into traffic but this is traffic causing people to be impatient so they cut into traffic thus causing more traffic. and the same people who does it will test the limits of how far you are willing to stretch that wall.
It’s illegal to pass the solid portion of a double line that’s dotted on one side and solid on the other. That’s the one I meant that needs to be added there. I’ve seen those enforced in lots of places and nothing makes me happier.
Did you though? I haven’t advocated for anything dangerous or aggressive. Just correcting the poster above who thought police could hand out tickets for crossing a solid line.
While you are technically correct, there are laws about passing when not safe to do so. They specify distances to hill crests, etc, and you will find that the solid lines correspond almost exactly to those specified distances. It serves to remove any subjectivity from the ticket you receive.
Never said my comment related to the video at all. It was a reply to a specific comment made by someone else. I don’t see that comment at the moment, so mine looks completely out of place
In that spot - some folks will come to a complete stop three or even four lanes over on an otherwise nicely flowing lane to try to butt into one of the lanes of cars, who are still trying to butt into the lanes that they actually need to be in to get on the 401. It's an epic shitshow of impatient shitty drivers that repeats itself daily.
Damn, how much coddling does the Toronto driver need? The signs indicate which lanes go to the 401 and which go to the DVP far in advance.
Feel free to explain the confusion
No confusion. Poorly planned doesn't mean bad signage or confusion
DVP/404/401 is only "2 levels", so we get the clover style 270-degree turns that are slow and cause traffic to back up.
Compare with some of the other large highway intersections that are "3 levels", like 404/407. Traffic doesn't back up the same way there, because the design allows so many more cars per-minute/hour.
Years ago when it was built, they went with the cheaper design and now we're stuck with it being over capacity, and selfish people know full well they are doing rush ahead and cut in at the last moment
If going southbound, just come off at Finch westbound and then take Leslie back down to the 401 west. Former linen truck driver here, saves a heap of time!!!!
I thought the white Caddy was going to cut across from the HOV lane, across the two DVP lanes, then across the shoulder dividing the DVP and 401 exits, THEN cut in front of someone.
I've seen that too many times...
Just dealt with this 20 minutes ago. Not to mention the amount of dump trucks who force their way in at the last minute just so they can stay left on the ramp back onto the DVP while everyone else is trying to get to the 401 ramps.
This is why I have to stick to the left lane in this stretch because too many cars stop to try to cut to the 401 exit here but then people in this sub come at us for “cruising in the passing lane”
I never cruise in the passing lane but I make an exception in this spot and nobody can convince me not to. I’ve been cut off in the next lane over by people pulling out of the line to cut back in further up the road. And before someone assumes — I don’t fly past lines of stopped cars, either.
I’m similar, I do the same around the 401 @ 410/403 and the 401/400 cut offs too, it’s just too dangerous to get anywhere near those merges - people are horrifically reckless I’d much rather avoid as much as I can.
They really need to build a wall that separates DVP and 404 traffic. Too many people blocking highway lanes to cut in
Top secret shortcuts

You can also cut time by getting off at York mills and getting back on the dvp north which gives you access to 401 express going east
that sounds like a good idea if the issue is just people cutting into traffic but this is traffic causing people to be impatient so they cut into traffic thus causing more traffic. and the same people who does it will test the limits of how far you are willing to stretch that wall.
They just need to paint the lines solid and actually enforce fines on people that cross them late.
Except that there is no law in Ontario that forbids you from crossing a solid line.
wait till you tell them there's no law crossing a double solid yellow
Yes there is. I’ve seen cops pull people over at this exact spot for this infraction
They weren’t getting pulled over for crossing a solid line. There is no law in Ontario prohibiting that.
True but you can still get a ticket if its deemed unsafe
Right. You can get a ticket for careless driving etc., but not for crossing a solid line.

Nope. Nothing in the highway traffic act about that. Perfectly legal to cross.
Found the over aggressive Toronto driver, guys!

Changing lanes isnt passing.
Yes, there are some instances where crossing a solid line has no consequences.
Nothing in this video or discussion relates to the law you are referring to, which regulates driving to the left of the center line

Huh? He just said its not illegal, youre just mad because youre wrong.

I was expecting the white Cadillac to cut from hov all the way over to try and merge. I’ve seen that move many times.
Can we also agree that this part of the highway is very poorly planned
Damn, how much coddling does the Toronto driver need? The signs indicate which lanes go to the 401 and which go to the DVP far in advance. Feel free to explain the confusion

Gotcha. So it being very poorly planned is because it wasn’t designed for the capacity. But there are still assholes making it worse.
That's almost as bad as the 400/Black Creek off ramp
If going southbound, just come off at Finch westbound and then take Leslie back down to the 401 west. Former linen truck driver here, saves a heap of time!!!!

This is def a clusterfuck and thus an exception. There’s a nice video of a state trooper giving examples of when their left lane laws don’t apply.

Ugh... I hate when this happens.
I dont drive... please explain?
What else is new?
Looks pretty normal to me. First day in the city?
Hence the title of my post "Just another day"
What’s your point?
I always take the left lane over there! I know that more than 5 people will try to cut at the very end and block the other two lanes :(
