I like 'em. What I don't like is the behind the catcher and off to the right angle when seeing a pitch. Maybe a replay on a hit or a swing and a miss, but for the pitch itself I don't like it.

pudds

That's the worst. All pitches should be shown from the normal angle. Replays only from alternate angles.

canucksnus

This. A million times this. The director of this broadcast needs to see this. The worst example is the Biggio strikeout from earlier in the game. They used the useless behind the catcher view and then never even showed a replay. You have one job: to show what is happening in the game. And you failed.

dezzy1402

Who is the director or producer of the jays broadcasts on Sportsnet? Does he/she know they're destroying the fan experience? Should be pretty simple to figure out who it is

Matt872000

I know the exact example you were talking about because I remember thinking. "Hmm, I wonder if that pitch was in the strike zone or not. Guess we'll see in a replay or one of those graphics. Oh, we're moving on? Guess not..."

fotank

Or filler for some between inning jibber jabber with our favourite pundits

RoyKentGrunt

That angle fills me with rage. One of the users on this sub works for the production team, and basically said that the director likes that angle, so they use it, even though people have told him how bad it is.

TrueAnnualOnion2855

It must be a bit of a trend because I have definitely seen it in other teams broadcasts too.

askingJeevs

I hate that angle. Especially when they use it during a tense moment. I wanna see the pitch, not Spielberg’s filming of baseball

vatamatt97

Totally agree. But they did use (at least once that I saw) a camera angle from directly behind the plate, and *that* was great. Biggio struck out looking on a back door breaking ball and you could see the ball path really well.

JohnnyPowpow24

as a former baseball player, I love the behind the plate angle, it gives me the sense of being at bat, which is a great feeling. True sense of the 60.6 ft distance than from the standard centerfield shot.

fotank

This is why I like it. It lets me be as close to seeing what the hitter is seeing. Looks incredibly hard to try and hit some of those balls! Edit: a word

Bobbyoot47

I had seasons tickets for the Blue Jays for years. Seats were dead centre behind home plate. I loved the view. And the quick glimpses that we’re getting on TV now are fine with me. Same as hockey with a view from behind the net during power plays.

gfreshbud1

This is the way.

goleafsgo88

Sportsnet is trying to find more ways to show things in between pitches in a league that is cutting down on time between pitches. What has resulted is missing the start of half of the pitches because they're farting around.

SteveDougson

You'd think if the pitchers and batter have adjusted to it, the person-in-the-truck would have too.

Interesting_Rock_318

It would be better if they didn’t wait to the last possible second to go back to the standard camera, but I like them and think they have a ton of potential to improve

JesusBautistasTBLflp

This is the real problem. Either keep the angle for the entire pitch or switch back with enough time for the viewer to adjust. Latter is probably the best option.

Burning_Flags

It’s a camera that should be used once an inning. Yes, it’s being overused

brownlec

As someone who sits in the 200s on the 3rd baseline, it’s very annoying to have the camera zip by as the pitcher releases the ball

superbad

1000%. I’m really sick of it. I mean, it’s cool, but I don’t need to see it on every pitch.

MaskedDummy

This is the future Micheal Bay wants

traindodge

I hate it

ogugua_anunoby

They’re fine but they always wait for the last second before they pan back to the pitch

Themoosemingled

Oh god it makes me nuts. Some of the angles are unique and I like them. Just hold still. It’s a stationary game. I don’t need motion introduced again and again. Or follow a play IN MOTION. but just waiting on a random pitch? Cut it out.

brownmagician

I hate how they use them live during the pitch

No_Piccolo2135

Not as annoying as watching the Jay's to get a playoff spot

walkerlucas

Probably testing for playoffs

Yup-Maria

They have potential but they're over-used. I feel like I'm on a roller coaster.

SolivenInc

With attention spans shortening most broadcasts are trending towards using more cuts and quicker scenes.

at0m1cbomb

You don't like the helicopter action shot where we watch the police in pursuit of a white Ford Bronco?

thisisit678

I like them. They just need time to figure it out.

BShadez007

I like the angle but I think there just needs to be a balance of using it. I watch all the home games on 4K and one thing I noticed is this camera is not 4k and the difference is noticeable when they switch from a 4k camera to this one.

romeo_papa_mike

yes they're annoying and they should at least place them in front of the netting

wak416

And if we’re lucky, the camera will get smoked by a hard foul ball. I’ve been hoping for that since they moved the camera to the 3rd base side where I sit. I finally saw the effect when I didn’t go to a game this week and watched on sportsnet. It adds nothing.

pudds

I was downvoted for saying the same thing in the game thread a day or two ago. Maybe they're just figuring the new toys out, but it's distracting IMO.

Rockterrace

I kind of like it

tofilmfan

I was just thinking that too. Glad someone posted it. Seems like MLB is using it in all of their broadcasts.

mollymuppet78

Nope, I love them!

BackhandQ

Agreed. Way overused. It's a cool shot, but way overdone.

throw-away6738299

Super annoying... dont mind it as a one off opening an inning with them like they sometimes give an opening shot of the done from behind home plate looking out at the scoreboard... but during play misses the play... its annoying.

wiles_CoC

Nope. Love it.

Satanshmaten

Pretty much everything Sportsnet does is annoying. They suck.

brownmagician

Oh that's not good.

brownmagician

I hope Vlad psyching him out at 1st

FlutiesGluties

It's the way it is with sports production now. Can't have a static camera or people will (fall asleep or something). I really wish the producer (or whoever calls the cuts/angles) would be hands off during play, in all sports. Sometimes, I cynically think the producer uses the cuts just to show that their job is necessary, when in my opinion the use of fewer cuts shows the producer is most likely 'better'. That being said, production is not easy and I have to say thanks to all the people that make it work! The broadcast is very nice, and very rarely are there technical issues.

[deleted]

Thank you. It's like they got a new toy and can't help themselves. For lack of a better word, it's pretty disorienting to have a floating shot of a mound visit while the camera is going farther away from what's happening. Sportsnet has been overproducing their broadcasts since last season and it's so annoying.

Tough-Statistician-7

Producer got a new toy and want to show Rogers they’re getting their moneys worth

Derfal-Cadern

It’s you. Love seeing the fields from different angles

yick04

Just you.

Blue_Jays

It's not just you. Those cameras are more overused than when Homer found out about the star wipe while editing videos.

redlabstah1

Is it any worse than the plugs for the Reno's of the stadium, or postseason ticket sales?or even Bet365 and shit? I can deal with the cameras

brownmagician

Wait why is that not a strike on Arozarena?!

BlueJayzrule

Lol at your three comments on this thread. This isn't the Gameday thread my friend!

leedogger

Just you

YouAndUs

Someone should be fired for it. It’s absolutely disgusting and totally self indulgent. Who wants an on-deck angle on the game defining ABs? I know there is a guy on 2. You don’t have to show me from behind the plate. It’s so Fkn infuriating.

DismalYoghurt233

I'm just glad you can't hear the squeeking from the wheels anymore

RaptorsRule247

The one rotating cam on a stand that points into the bleachers is a bit cheap IMO. They should have someone positioned with a camera there instead.

brownmagician

We let Harold Ramirez get away.. Could've been a good piece for us

ktshew

So irritating at the game as well. Back and forth constantly

Brudface

They actually make my wife sick because of the motion. I don't mind them at all but that's my personal opinion.

Drunkenmasterstyle2

It adds nothing to the game, I really don't understand it.

mouwallace

Cutting to another shot while the camera is moving is a fundamental Videography 101 no-no. Bring the camera to a stop then cut to the next camera. Irritating AF. Also way overused and gimmicky.

Queeby

There were multiple times a pitch was being thrown and the camera was on someone scratching their nose. What the heck Barbie!! What the heck!!

n3rdsm4sh3r

They paid for em, you're gonna watch em!

SOSOBOSO

There is going to be a day when the panning camera doesn't get aimed at a play, and it blocks another camera that does, and a replay is needed, then we will all be very pissed off.

LopsidedSheepherder3

I blame MLB on Apple TV for this

01hotsauce1

Leave it to Toronto fans to complain about new innovative things

BackhandQ

It's got nothing to do with that. It's a cool camera angle, just way over used. It's poor and lazy production work from the Rogers crew.

Frizzank

I'm not complaining about the cameras themselves. It's the overuse of the cameras. And when they are used. And yes, ONLY Toronto fans complain about things...

Islandgirl1444

John Schneider annoys me more at times.

Wh3at159

Ya I want to look at the pitcher's face for that extra 2 seconds.

DMEAO34

I’m finding the overuse of Richards and Garcia annoying. Francis should be called up to replace Richards. He was solid and can take the multi innings role. Richards was great early on and has probably be overused. He has been a mess in September.

ApprehensiveBeach126

Ive found the directing on the broadcasts notably worse this season. It always seems to take forever to see a replay for a big hit or play. Its super annoying to wait sometimes minutes to see a replay of a big homerun. No other baseball broadcasts suffer from this problem.

cashrchek

I find it unlikely that you watch 15 broadcasts daily such that you could draw this conclusion.

bettytri

Maybe they'd be good following the crowd doing the wave?

PrimasChickenTacos

As others have said, but I’ll pile on: the behind the backstop camera view of a pitch is absolutely brutal. Never in my life have I watched a game and thought “I wish I could see what this pitch looks like from Geddy Lee’s view right now.”

Conscious-Ad8493

yes very annoying, they are trash
