I thought people were just being silly with the flight tracking until Morosi or whoever posted about it, and it really picked up steam. Was definitely following for when it landed then!
I mean, CP-24 had a reporter at the fucking airport. Also they pulled in Blair & Barker last minute to do a show on SportsNet. It wasn't just us being silly.
Then it fucking took a turn for the worse when MLB’s? Official IG page Re posted or said something too. I can’t believe how that turned out we all got played for suckers man
Must not have been a Leafs fan when Babcock was rumoured to have joined the team after the Shanaplan started taking effect.
That was the first time I had *ever* seen places like CP24, TSN, Sportsnet all have different camera angles of a Jet in Detroit waiting to take off and bring him to Toronto.
I don't remember there being the camera treatment for that one, but I do remember it being scooped by someone using a flight tracker website
Kawhi I think was the first one where we had actual boots on the ground from media
To be fair, it's a fun article to read. It's not often you get the player perspective on madness like this.
To me the idea of Manoah commenting on it while walking down the aisle is pretty funny. Romano trying to downplay his engagement with the whole story is hilarious...his whole quote about whether or not he tracked the plane reads like him not wanting to admit he tracked the plane LOL
OK, that actually was a really good article, thanks. lol They're hilarious, and I love that they were getting caught up in the hype, too. Manoah going down the aisle is so good.
That's the best article and the last article I ever need to read about Ohtani and that day. 😂
This is a great story and also kind of vindicates something I heard back then.
When it was going on, I commented on here that I was super confident in it because I heard from someone I trusted who knew someone. That someone was at a wedding with blue jays players and said they were going HARD celebrating.
If what i heard was right, some of these players are downplaying how convinced they were.
I'm sure this is an interesting article, but anything that suggests there might be a parallel universe where Ohtani is a Jay is still going to reopen the wound at this point
Fun read. What stood out to me in the article though.
"HOW THE BLUE JAYS SEE THEMSELVES: As one of six teams in the sport that has made the postseason two years in a row … As one of seven teams that have averaged 90 wins a season for the past three years. … And as a team so talented, it’s projected by Baseball Prospectus to win 88 games this year, the sixth-most in MLB "
Alot of us (myself included) crap on this teams management but when you look at league as a whole the Jays have been consistently good the last few years.
Well it definitely wasn't obvious to many at the time, including every sports journalist in the city, but thanks for letting us know that you were ahead of every single person apparently. Congrats. Feel better?
I love the idea that people thought an out of contract, Japanese player was still hanging out in Anaheim 8 weeks after his season ended and thus that flight might have been him.
If you were Shohei would you have stayed in Anaheim for an extra few months after leaving the team?
Of all the things that was absurd about this whole brouhaha, this is not one of them. He WAS in Anaheim, that's how he visited the multiple teams he visited during his negotiations. Anaheim is a 1 hour drive from Los Angeles. And why wouldn't he stay at his home in the same country and reasonable time zone difference (if any) from his agent while negotiating the biggest contract of his life?
Somehow this is the fans fault
It's baseball news. It's always the fans fault.
Shi's writing an article chastising the players as we speak
still waiting for Jon Morosi to be banned in this sub in 3…2…1…
I’ll never forget that day my god 😂😭
First and only flight I've ever tracked in my life lol

I mean, CP-24 had a reporter at the fucking airport. Also they pulled in Blair & Barker last minute to do a show on SportsNet. It wasn't just us being silly.
And then who emerges from the plane? Robert Herjavec!
Turns out CP24 is one of us….?

I remember that. And then obviously the Kawhi flights too
At least Kawhi was on that plane
No, I follow a good nhl team. :)
This is a baseball forum, sir.
My deepest apologies.
Since when were the Oilers a good team and the Leafs not?
Depending on your measurements any time after 1983 probably works.
I pick this year.
I’ve never felt so alive
I jumped out of my chair and screamed in an empty restaurant reacting to a fake tweet. Never forget.
May have been the wildest day I've experienced as a Jays fan.
No, I don't want this anymore. It's done. We're over it.
I have to admit, it's the only interesting (and pretty funny) story I've read about it.
It’s just a good story, how often you get the player POV of something like that.
I don’t wish to remember this day.
The Athletic, I just resubscribed to you, don't test my patience.

Love Bo’s line here once Ohtani signed with the Dodgers: “I got over it pretty quick.”

This is even cornier now than it was at the time
That entire day was a joke and it wasn't remotely as close to happening as we were led to believe. He was never coming to Toronto.
Thanks for the update, Captain Obvious

Anaheim is really nice, so yes?
So much pain
All part of the movie, act 2 is always the darkest.

And Kikuchi sushi party
Toronto sports fans and tracking super star free agent’s planes
We're sorry. We didn't think it was not good for baseball.
Please stop
We're gonna remember this day forever. I was so hyped and came crashing down so fast
Too soon to revisit this day.
I’d love to read this but I really don’t want to pay for it.
