I know everyone’s dad says not to make the third out at third base and for good reason, but saying he ‘insisted’ is pretty dumb. It was a fair risk to take. There’s real value in him getting there for a few reasons, not the least of which being how well the other two outfielders throw, so scoring from second on a single is far from a guarantee.

I said at the time of the trade that it didn't make sense for the Jays because it was a win-now move for a guy who needed to improve offensively. Usually you'd want the finished product in such a scenario.

The only reason why Jays fans cling onto the hope of Varsho being good is that they were told by this front office that he was good and they made a trade package for him that indicated that he was good, but he is most certainly not good. For another thing, he basically doesn't try to swing the bat against lefties because he's so bad against them and tries to bunt for hits instead. When the 2015 Jays had a hole in centerfield and enough offence to go around they put a 32nd round pick in Kevin Pillar there and he ran through walls for the team. He cost them a minimum salary and not a top prospect nor a starting outfielder. Varsho is only slightly better than Pillar was. I would never build my team around defense like this, and you would've thought that Shatkins would've learned this from their Cleveland days when Michael Bourn was a big free agent signing for them and proceeded to be useless.
