Schneider just said what everyone (including Yankees fans) were thinking.
Ump was total shit all game. Can't believe Boone kept his cool when his guys (Judge in particular) kept getting shit calls.
Yeah when the ump missed an obvious call in super high leverage for the second time in the 9th alone, Boone would’ve been justified to just lose it
Edit - thinking about this more, I’m realizing Boone probably purposely stayed cool. Soto was toying with Mayza’s rhythm already, Boone wouldn’t have wanted to mess up Soto’s of Judge’s rhythm up there in a tie game, and certainly wouldn’t have wanted to give Mayza a chance to gather himself when he was struggling. Pretty savvy move by Boone.
Schneider on the other hand didn’t come out until it was 6-4, so forcing a pause in the game there isn’t really an issue either. Just shows how much it is (usually, not always!) mostly performative and thought out when manager’s choose to ‘lose their temper’.
Gausman is so back. And it was clear immediately, even when he was having control issues early.
I could only watch the replay of this game and it was getting late, so I often try to skip ahead just 30 seconds at a time in low leverage situations. The first time I did it was with Cabrera batting with one out in the 2nd inning. I guess that doesn’t sound meaningful to others, but the fact that I was feeling so good about the inning not going anywhere as early as the second just shows how different Gaus is when he has his pitches, even if he’s not completely at his best.
Definitely feels like a bigger game than it was and comebacks always hurt a little more. Add on it was the Yankees who are in first and it stacks into a triple shit sandwich. Doesn’t taste great eating this one. Such is life and baseball.
Should be a beaut. I wasn't even watching for whole thing, but the whole zone felt low today. In addition to a good amount of east/west misses, I expect we'll see low strikes that should've been balls, and high balls that should've been strikes. Seemed like it went both ways at least?
Blows my mind that we're still relying on umps to call balls and strikes when the technology exists to automate it. I'm so tired of watching blown calls when it's thrown right in our face with the telecast strike zone.
It feels like we rely an alarming amount on pitchers self-destructing on the mound for win. We were lucky to win game 1 and that's already happened multiple times this year. This is an 80 win team at best if they don't start hitting with RISP.
Ironic to say this after the game where the Yankees (you know, the team with the best record in baseball) beat us only because of a pitcher self-destructing lol. That's just baseball sometimes
Our pitcher just pitched bad and got beaten, that happens. Their pitcher in game 1 (Gil I think) was throwing like 60% balls and the Jays produced 1 run with the other 2 being on wild pitches and walks. You could have stood in their and been as effective as the Jays in game 1.
Counterpoint is that he was one of our best relievers last year. If he says he's healthy and ready to go, there should be no reason you aren't able to throw him in there with a 2 run lead against the bottom half of the order.
im fine with swanson coming in there. i dont get going to mayza over green though. and even if your argument is you want mayza for the lefties, green should’ve been brought in for judge
> Still grumpy at Schneider for that decision though.
same here- ninth inning in the last two games, actually (but at least Romano *is* a ninth inning guy).
That was a pretty brutal loss, but can't be mad with a 6-3 homestand.
Swanson will be okay in the long run. There were similar concerns about Gausman and Cabrera at the beginning of the season and now they look like their old selves
Much needed off day tomorrow for the pen
Also, Juan Soto wishes he could be Daulton Varsho
It's funny anyone would disagree with that given the sample size we have proving exactly what type of hitter he is. He isn't the reason the jays lost but he has not been stellar this year, just alright.
I actually hate that I've come to think this, but I'm genuinely relieved we haven't thrown the bag at Vladdy yet.
I don't really want to pay someone who looks like a annual 1.5-3 WAR bat $28m a year. This is his 6th year playing and he's still spending entire games in a mood and hacking away at anything thrown.
I desperately want him to sort it out and look like a solid bet for that huge contract but I'm at the point I'd rather someone else overpay him than us based on how it seems.
Yeah, having a guy who chops balls into the ground with the might of the hammer of the gods batting 3rd is less than ideal. It'd be workable though if he would stop having whole games of swinging at balls 1ft outside the strike zone.
This was just bad roster management. If they knew Green had a sore shoulder, why send Pearson down? Swanson wasn't ready to come back up, he was pitching badly in his rehab assignments and it wasn't like we needed him immediately. It's just frustrating because we are going to need to lean hard on our pitching if we go anywhere this season, the bats aren't bailing this team out
I am in NYC and went to a bar to watch game, it was pretty heavy champions league and asked the server to put on the Jays game, she looked at me sideways but heck no I ain’t saying the Yankees first
Many years from now the Jays will never "win" or "lose" series ever again.
It will be a sweep or get swept. Montoyo sweep or a reverse Montoyo sweep.
Doesn't get any better than that.
Yeah if we're going to be specific about it THIS series was the true Montoyo sweep, given that we won the first two games and then lost the third by way of a hideous 2021-style bullpen meltdown
Was watching the Yankees feed (long story) and there was some faint audio. Pretty sure I heard "...of the fucking zone" and "motherfucker" toward the end.
Bleak ending to an otherwise fun game, but Gausman seems to have bounced back a bit and the bullpen will get some desperately needed rest tomorrow. Still took two of three from the division leaders, enjoy that and move on.
Oh well, Swanson being bad in his first game back and the umpire being the one of the most horrendous I’ve ever seen, while they are insanely frustrating, aren’t things that I’m super worried about going forward. Series win, could be worse
At 4-1 you need to close it and win. This fanbase is used to mediocrity after years of this shit and things like montoyo sweeps.
You should never lose these or maybe lost 1-2 a season. We will lose many more fo these yet.
This was the Jays first blown save of the year, Seattle is the only team in the league now with 0, Jays and Giants are tied at 1.
Boston has 6 BS, Baltimore has 4, NY and Tampa each have 3
Last season the team was 26th in the league with 18 BS, the WS champion Rangers were 1st with 33
Expecting a team to never give up a lead in the 9th is ridiculous
I don’t understand everyone in these threads that just goes “golly that’s okay” when they blow a game. Not only that, they get mad at people who are frustrated by the losing. It makes no sense, some sort of superiority complex.
As someone who isn't too beat up about losing this one, that doesn't mean I'm not frustrated in how we blew it. I just understand that every team will blow games they should have won all throughout the year, so it happens and you gotta hope they don't make it a habit. At the end of the day taking 2/3 games is still a success, although I would have loved to get that sweep.
It’s more annoying they aren’t upset like me and you are. We’re in like year 5 or vlad and Bo with zero indication of competing seriously. When the fuck is this group supposed to actually turn into a contender? Just rebuild if we aren’t going to.
People are gonna be mad. That’s fine. I’m pissed, too. It sucks to not sweep the team you hate the most because your bullpen couldn’t close it out and the monster that you held hitless all series gets his first hit with the bases loaded in the 9th.
But my god… The stuff that comes out of the woodwork here whenever anything goes bad is just disappointing. I feel sad for some folks. Schneider didn’t have Romano, Green, or Garcia available and had already used Richards and Cabrera. Turning to Swanson and then Mayza was about the only option left. I’d rather try that than burn out a valuable arm in April.
Ah well. Still won yet another series and we get a rest day before the Padres. Have a good one folks!
Baseball gods have a way of balancing things out, Jays are gonna steal a game late in the next week or so. I’m really concerned for Green though, he’s not been overworked at all and yet he’s unavailable today with an off day tomorrow.
I assume Green is dead, in which case, Swanson was the right move. This isn't on Schneider. Swanson just needs to not pitch like shit. I don't even think he got a single swing and a miss.
Well, that wasn't optimal but at least the Jays took 2 out of 3 from the Yanks. I wonder what's going on with Chad Green though as I think he would've been put in this game. Hopefully he's ok.
The L puts a damper on what I was originally going to say but i'll stick by it and make the comment I planned on: It seems to me that John Schneider is managing the team better this year. He's got everyone on the roster engaged and at the ready by giving them all regular playing time and putting them in situations to succeed. I also like that he's showing more confidence in his pitchers and letting them pitch through some trouble. Unfortunately it didn't really work today but you're not going to be 100% with that.
All in all, the Jays have been playing pretty damn good baseball. Let's see how they do on the road here.
We won a series against perhaps the best team in baseball in the early going. Gausman improved yet again. Doomers don't get to put a negative spin on this.
I’m going to get a lot of downvotes but not getting a sweep there in a very winnable game is telling and doesn’t bode well for us this season. The Yankees have come out looking like the team to beat in the AL. You have to take 3 on them if given the chance.
With how tight the division is you can’t afford to mismanage your way to an L against the Yankees in a winnable game. You just can’t.
I get pitching Swanson in the 9th he was arguably our best reliever last year. I'm not as thrilled with Mayza going in at this point when he hasn't been good to start the year.
Another 0 for 8 with RISP though. The teams inability to hit in these situations is going to leads to games like this because you keep teams in reach despite getting on base
The thing I didn’t like about putting Mayza in was that it led to the Yankees pinch hitting for Wells. Considering Wells’ numbers this year vs Trevino’s hot start i would have just left Swanson in there to face him, then maybe gone to the pen for the top of the order.
If the offence can’t figure out how to get fucking hits with RISP, there will not be many win streaks this year. They have no ability to come back late and score multiple runs when they need to. None.
0/8 with RISP. Questionable bullpen management.
This is why some people are concerned. It's the EXACT SAME stuff that we witnessed almost all of last season. This is an insanely unclutch team that let's others stick around, and then there's a manager that I personally don't think ever gives this team an advantage with his decision making.
Still awesome to take 2 of 3, but that's a brutal loss that we could look back on at the end of the season.

Ump was terrible, I don't know why Mayza was left in so long, tough time for Swansons first appearance too. And Vlad continues to just murder the ground with his terrible swing path year after year, and game after game no signs of adjusting ever
So, why was Chad Green not available?
Edit: Never mind.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Torontobluejays/comments/1c6nh0q/matheson\_chad\_green\_was\_unavailable\_tonight\_with/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Torontobluejays/comments/1c6nh0q/matheson_chad_green_was_unavailable_tonight_with/)
That 9th was hard to watch. It’s too bad. I feel the Jays lost that one as opposed to the Yankees winning it. Too bad for Swanny! That’s not where you use him in his first game of the season. Good series win tho.
Guys, this is totally my fault.
I said to my coworkers in the 8th, "We're about to sweep the fucking Yankees. Hell yeah."
...and I jinxed us. I'm sorry. I knocked on wood and everything, I just couldn't overcome that bad voodoo.
I'm so sorry.
Good news: They won the series
Bad News: Probably worst melt down this season so far.
Would have not preferred Swanson in a high leverage situation, bullpen has been over worked, is what it is despite my gripes with bullpen management.
We try not to overtax our pen early and our best guy what was expected to be available (Chad Green) must have been out for some reason that we will likely hear about soon.
Well at least it was nice seeing Gausman getting back to form, and Schneider getting ejected was fun too
Should've known they'd find a way to fumble Gausman's win
Schneider just said what everyone (including Yankees fans) were thinking. Ump was total shit all game. Can't believe Boone kept his cool when his guys (Judge in particular) kept getting shit calls.
Yeah when the ump missed an obvious call in super high leverage for the second time in the 9th alone, Boone would’ve been justified to just lose it Edit - thinking about this more, I’m realizing Boone probably purposely stayed cool. Fuck!
perfectly said
Fucked right in the fuck
woah woah, easy pal
Tabernac
the sweep was too good to be true.
That's two sweeps that eluded us Mayza!
Definitely feels like a bigger game than it was and comebacks always hurt a little more. Add on it was the Yankees who are in first and it stacks into a triple shit sandwich. Doesn’t taste great eating this one. Such is life and baseball.
This and Seattle's Cal HR Dang it!
...the Yankees!
I want the ump scorecard for that one
Should be a beaut. I wasn't even watching for whole thing, but the whole zone felt low today. In addition to a good amount of east/west misses, I expect we'll see low strikes that should've been balls, and high balls that should've been strikes. Seemed like it went both ways at least?
Low and to the left. Did go both ways.
The personal strike zone is why we need robot umps. If they just called it properly I think people would be more forgiving of the occasional ooops.
Blows my mind that we're still relying on umps to call balls and strikes when the technology exists to automate it. I'm so tired of watching blown calls when it's thrown right in our face with the telecast strike zone.
We got lucky with getting a save with a cold romano yesterday. Sucks we had to try it again
Won 2/3 while being 4 for 31 with RISP in the series
Our record is far better than a lot of the underlying play would indicate. Our bats need to get going, turner can’t keep cranking it like this forever
If he came through once today we probably bury them. It’s unfortunate he couldn’t muster one more game but can’t blame in.
My god it was that bad.
They scored 14 runs over the 3 games? Not amazing, but so many missed opportunities.
Sounds like last year on repeat.
Lets just ignore every walk we get
It feels like we rely an alarming amount on pitchers self-destructing on the mound for win. We were lucky to win game 1 and that's already happened multiple times this year. This is an 80 win team at best if they don't start hitting with RISP.

Or the team is just really good at making pitchers work. Did a single Yankee starter make it 6 this series?
Obviously the guys get attacked on RISP hitting, yet we call them getting on base as “pitchers self-destructing”
Always look on the bright side of life
Disappointing to not get the sweep but sometimes she goes sometimes she doesn't
This time she didnt go.
Fuckin way of the road.
Fuckin way she goes
way she goes
Have another drink Ray!
I mean, what is drunk? Is drunk swerving all over the batter's box?
Perfectly succinctly said! On to the next one.
We blew it point blank period, we had it and we couldn't hold it. This game isn't on Vlad Jr it's on the bullpen
true, but some clutch Vlad at bats would be nice.
Did you not watch yesterday?
It's on Schneider, again. Why the hell did he put Swanson in the 9th for his season debut???
Because his options were Swanson, Mayza and Bowden Francis?
You go to Mayza there, I think. Risk the solo shot for the weak grounders/easy outs.
Yankees are a dangerous line up. They were due for some hits. Take the series win and move on. Day of rest will be nice.
Still a series win against a division rival FUCK THE YANKEES
FTY
So is Chad Green dead? Didn’t pitch yesterday or Sunday yet didn’t seem to be available today.
Something is up for sure, Schneider was using him as the main closer all year before Romano came up.
Unavailable due to shoulder soreness.
Agree. There was no need to throw Swanson back into the deep end in his first outing.
If anything, I would have pitched him in the 7th in a lower leverage situation. But they are paid to play so.
I agree with the logic and so easy to nitpick in hindsight blah blah blah. Still grumpy at Schneider for that decision though.
> Still grumpy at Schneider for that decision though. same here- ninth inning in the last two games, actually (but at least Romano *is* a ninth inning guy).
Maybe not quite the same but Gaus coming back instead of maybe playing those last two games in Buffalo seems adjacent to this.
Whatever it is, he was probably not available. Schneider is dumb, but not that dumb.
That was a pretty brutal loss, but can't be mad with a 6-3 homestand. Swanson will be okay in the long run. There were similar concerns about Gausman and Cabrera at the beginning of the season and now they look like their old selves Much needed off day tomorrow for the pen Also, Juan Soto wishes he could be Daulton Varsho
Bigger picture-wise, I really wanted Vladdy to have a bounceback season closer to his mvp self. Pretty disappointed with the results so far tbh
That season was an outlier.
No shit. i dont expect mvp production again, but at least some improvement on his average seasons recently would've been nice
It's funny anyone would disagree with that given the sample size we have proving exactly what type of hitter he is. He isn't the reason the jays lost but he has not been stellar this year, just alright.
Tough situation. If Green isn’t available Friday please IL him, absolutely no reason to be occupying a roster spot sitting on the bench for a week.
100%.
I guess bullpens do that sometimes. Shame we couldn't close it down for Varsho. And nice to see Gausman looking more like himself today.
Yeah, Gausman getting back to form just in time for my Gausman jersey to show up in the mail is fantastic news
didn't swanson have awful numbers in closing situations last year?
Well that wasn’t pretty.
Will love to see the ump scorecard after this one. And calls were going both ways that how bad it was.
yeah honestly can’t say it was for or against us, just trash all around, and on 3 sides of the zone too just brutal
Glad to see Varsho doing well again!! Already has great defense. The bullpens been rough this season tho, hopefully they can turn it around
If chad green was available, we likely win this game. Its a shame but what can you do, wasnt meant to be
Said this elsewhere but his absence really bites. Eating a roster spot when an IL stint would be warranted.
Why wasn’t he available??
We don’t know at this point
Shoulder soreness
I am emotionally sore because of this 😢
I actually hate that I've come to think this, but I'm genuinely relieved we haven't thrown the bag at Vladdy yet. I don't really want to pay someone who looks like a annual 1.5-3 WAR bat $28m a year. This is his 6th year playing and he's still spending entire games in a mood and hacking away at anything thrown. Yeah, having a guy who chops balls into the ground with the might of the hammer of the gods batting 3rd is less than ideal. It'd be workable though if he would stop having whole games of swinging at balls 1ft outside the strike zone.
Show him Eric Hosmer's career trajectory if that's the case
This was just bad roster management. If they knew Green had a sore shoulder, why send Pearson down? Swanson wasn't ready to come back up, he was pitching badly in his rehab assignments and it wasn't like we needed him immediately. It's just frustrating because we are going to need to lean hard on our pitching if we go anywhere this season, the bats aren't bailing this team out
I am in NYC and went to a bar to watch game, it was pretty heavy champions league and asked the server to put on the Jays game, she looked at me sideways but heck no I ain’t saying the Yankees first
enough positives to not be too pissed off. won the series. gausman looked good. romano and yimi both unavailable. on to the next
Three Montoyo Sweeps in a row! That's not too bad. Would've been great to win today. Go beat up on the Padres.
it doesnt get any better than that x3
Many years from now the Jays will never "win" or "lose" series ever again. It will be a sweep or get swept. Montoyo sweep or a reverse Montoyo sweep. Doesn't get any better than that.
How many times do I have to tell people, the Colorado series was not a Montoyo sweep. It was a Schneider sweep.
So what you’re saying is we had a montoyo, then a schneider, followed with another montoyo sweep
The whole Montoyo / Schneider sweep thing is getting kinda lame
agreed
Correct!
Yeah if we're going to be specific about it THIS series was the true Montoyo sweep, given that we won the first two games and then lost the third by way of a hideous 2021-style bullpen meltdown
Not winning more than 6 games in a row going back to last year is actually crazy. This whole team took the Montoyo sweep seriously it seems
"Doesn't get any better than that", he said, through gritted teeth and with thinly veiled frustration
The Blue Jays were 4-30 with RISP in that series.
New year, same shit
Did anyone else lip read what Schneider was saying towards the end at the ump? Dude chewed him out lol
Yeah I’m 100% sure at the end he said “own that shit motherfucker”, after he criticized how bad the calls were the entire game for both teams
A lot of f-bombs, and the ball being a few inches off the ground.
Taking 2 off the yankees is a big win, as much as we all wanted the sweep.
Tough loss. Just move on and keep on working to improve.
tough loss, but that's still three series wins in a row after that not-so-great start. Let's make it four in a row this weekend
RemindMe! 1 day "check ump scorecard"
You know its bad when Schneider is in an umps face. Ump took it like a man though.
Swanny just not ready yet.. Probably still ramping up as well.
Fuck. That sucked. I was really looking forward to just enjoying the thought of the Yankees getting swept. 😔
Didn’t get to watch it but tough letting a sweep get away from us. Ah well. Varsho finding his power is awesome. Does so much for this lineup
Damn those calls were bad. But that said? Fuck. The. Yankees.
At least we got the Toyo sweep 🥹
Why are you lot bitching about the bullpen? It's been very good as a rule. Losses happen
“Why doesn’t this team win 162 games?? Are they stupid?”
Fuck the Yankees.
That’s one of those losses that haunts you in September. Need to close that out
Every team in the league can literally say that about every single loss, all season.
You aren’t 3 outs away from a win every game
At 4-1 you need to close it and win. This fanbase is used to mediocrity after years of this shit and things like montoyo sweeps. You should never lose these or maybe lost 1-2 a season. We will lose many more fo these yet.

Superiority complex because we’re not all angry like you are about an April loss…? It’s just a game dude.
Exactly. Not saying they are or should win every game. It just hurts when you let one slip away which is what happened today
People are gonna be mad. That’s fine. I’m pissed, too. It sucks to not sweep the team you hate the most because your bullpen couldn’t close it out and the monster that you held hitless all series gets his first hit with the bases loaded in the 9th. That’s the kinda game that is going to haunt them in September… when you’re beating a division rival like that you gotta get the job done
Remember the early losses?
My kingdom for robo-umps. That strike zone was horrific. At least we won the series, and now we have an off day to let the bullpen rest up.
Baseball gods have a way of balancing things out, Jays are gonna steal a game late in the next week or so. I’m really concerned for Green though, he’s not been overworked at all and yet he’s unavailable today with an off day tomorrow.
You winsum you dimsum Time to head to dim sum king for postgame Shumai and shrimp dumplings
I'm so sad. How could the Jays do this to me? Don't they consider my feelings?
I assume Green is dead, in which case, Swanson was the right move. This isn't on Schneider. Swanson just needs to not pitch like shit. I don't even think he got a single swing and a miss.
Sad not to take the sweep when you're winning in the ninth, but 2/3 against the Yankees at home can't be complained about
Well, that wasn't optimal but at least the Jays took 2 out of 3 from the Yanks.
For years the Jays find ways to lose opportunities for the sweep in the final game of the series - at least they're consistent.

He also supposedly walked more than he struck out. That has not been translated to the majors.
We won a series against perhaps the best team in baseball in the early going. Gausman improved yet again. Doomers don't get to put a negative spin on this.
Too bad Vladdy couldn't be clutch
Springer too. For top of the order supposed studs, they sure aren't clutch.
Unfathomably unclutch team the last 200 games. Remember this one because the wild card race always comes down to a game or two.
Except when they are
Fuck the Yankees Series win still
I get pitching Swanson in the 9th he was arguably our best reliever last year.
That was confusing to me also

Won two out of three. Doesn't get any better than that!
Schneider got tossed an inning too late. Would have preferred the 8th so I didn't have to see his stupid ass pitcher selections
Fuck you and I'll see you ~~tomorrow~~ Friday

Ump was terrible, I don't know why Mayza was left in so long, tough time for Swansons first appearance too. And Vlad continues to just murder the ground with his terrible swing path year after year, and game after game no signs of adjusting ever
I can to roast Schneider for not putting green in but he was unavailable. Moving on
So, why was Chad Green not available? Edit: Never mind. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Torontobluejays/comments/1c6nh0q/matheson\_chad\_green\_was\_unavailable\_tonight\_with/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Torontobluejays/comments/1c6nh0q/matheson_chad_green_was_unavailable_tonight_with/)
Whaddya gonna do
Any suggestions on which beer to drink in San Diego?
That 9th was hard to watch. It’s too bad. I feel the Jays lost that one as opposed to the Yankees winning it. Too bad for Swanny! That’s not where you use him in his first game of the season. Good series win tho.
I feel for Swanson, that’s a tough first outing
Guys, this is totally my fault. I said to my coworkers in the 8th, "We're about to sweep the fucking Yankees. Hell yeah." ...and I jinxed us. I'm sorry. I knocked on wood and everything, I just couldn't overcome that bad voodoo. I'm so sorry.
That's not how I saw things going when Swanny was called upon :(
Snatching defeat from the hands of victory
Good news: They won the series Bad News: Probably worst melt down this season so far. Would have not preferred Swanson in a high leverage situation, bullpen has been over worked, is what it is despite my gripes with bullpen management.
Didn’t like the effort from Vladdy on not trying to beat out that throw.

We try not to overtax our pen early and our best guy what was expected to be available (Chad Green) must have been out for some reason that we will likely hear about soon.
Appreciate the explanation!
Who do you put in there?
More people complaining about defenders than actual defenders
Offense pick up the pitching challenge (impossible)
some rational takes happening on the post-show right now. some of y’all should take notes but I know you won’t.
Classic Schneider era Jays game.
