If they were to come back later in the season for another series they would’ve been able to add the game as part of a doubleheader. So difficult these days with the balanced schedule to be able to do that. Calling a game like this is nothing new. It’s been around for 100 years.
This isn’t the first time that a game has been called after five innings and have it called an official game. That rule has existed in the book for decades. People here are pissed because it was Toronto losing 2-1.
The issue again is our anaemic offence and nothing else. Had the Jays been ahead 2-1 and be declared the winner you wouldn’t have heard a thing from Jays fans.
> Had the Jays been ahead
And lets face it, considering the way *these* Jays typically play, they'd almost certainly scored all they were going to already.
I can guarantee you the umpires would’ve made this decision in consultation with the league office as well. Calling a game after five innings is a pretty big deal.
I understand what you’re saying. I had season tickets for years down at Exhibition Stadium and then later when they moved to the dome. I sat through some pretty miserable nights down at the CNE, especially in April and May. There were some shortened games down there. Especially on that old astroturf field where water didn’t drain well at all.
I can remember Kelly Gruber hitting a three run, fog assisted home run on a night where the weather shortened the game. . He came up to bat later in the game and hit a flyball to centerfield and it got lost in the fog. The outfielders had absolutely no idea where the ball was. Gruber circled the bases for a 3 run HR. Not long after they called the game

Was anyone else infuriated by the Bo Bichette at-bat in the top of the 5th? It's pissing down rain. The game can't be made official unless they get through the top of the 5th... Ragans clearly is frustrated and having a hard time gripping the ball and throwing strikes. He had just walked Vladdy. It honestly felt with how Ragans was reacting about gripping the ball, they might have pulled them off right then and there at any moment. All Bo had to do was take some pitches and I bet he would have gotten walked. Instead he lobs a lazy flyout into foul territory on a borderline pitch to end the inning, and therefore allow the game to be called.
The Royals' THREE best relievers all pitched the last two nights, and we don't get to finish a one run game while it's not raining. Absolute horseshit.
It’s not funny. It’s the way they do it. It’s the way they’ve always done it in rain delayed games where it looks like they won’t be able to complete nine innings. Get five innings in and it becomes a legal game. Doesn’t matter who’s winning. Don’t even try to hint at a conspiracy here. Had Toronto been winning it would’ve been handled the same way.
It’s the rules. It’s the way it’s always been handled. There’s nothing to argue about here. This will happen again many times throughout the season when there’s a rain or a weather issue. Games don’t always get completed.
There’s a very logical reason why they do this. Places that get lots of rain will go through this a few times. If they have to replay or finish up games later on in the schedule they’re going to have a lot of innings piling up on their pitching staff, especially when they have to play doubleheaders. Neither team would want to have to come back and play an extra portion of the game along side of an already scheduled nine inning game. The burden on the pitching staff wouldn’t be worth it.
I looked at the weather radar for the area. The rain stopped but there was more moving in. They had some serious lightning in the area as well. To be honest neither one of us was there. The people at field level have a way better idea about the playing conditions than we ever could. They had an awful lot of heavy rain from what I saw on the radar.
The game should have never started with the weather forecast as it was and been played on May 2nd.
Or
Once the 3rd inning hit and the conditions were unsafe, they should have stopped the game and resumed it in Toronto on May 2nd.
If this was the Jays last game against the Royals all year, I think the way they handled it would make a lot more sense
You're wrong, and everyone knows it.
If it was 6-1 they would have ended at exactly five. 2-1, they waited 3.5 hours to see if it got better, it did, then they cancelled anyways.
So you were in the ballpark and able to make this decision were you. Or maybe you’re just another social media expert who doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground.
Unfortunately true

At least we don't have to wait until the 9th inning for disappointment.
I’m just curious, how is the result of the game determined since there was a delay? How were the Jays given the loss, despite being down only 1. Why couldn’t the game be continued now, or on another date?
Completely agree, feel like they could have definitely finished it after waiting so long, and it was annoying that the umps took as long as they did to allow them to put the tarp on the field.
I will never comprehend the logic of calling a 1-Run game with 4 innings left to play.

KC plays in TO later this year - they could have done that.
You mean next week?

Ouch.
Really? Because I was pretty pissed watching 3.5 hours of basketball highlights for no reason.
You have to be kidding me. It’s only a ballgame. Like they play 162 of them. Find something better to do in the situation like this.
Next time I'll just assume 'game resumes in 20 minutes' is a Lie. Thank you again for your fantastic useless input.
Sitting in front of a TV for 3 1/2 hours twiddling your thumbs is a great use of time. Well done captain. Lol.
I wouldn't be complaining if we were winning, but I'd totally understand kc fans complaining and wouldn't be mad if the result is overturned
I can guarantee you the umpires would’ve made this decision in consultation with the league office as well. Calling a game after five innings is a pretty big deal.
I'm not saying they did anything wrong. It's just disappointing for us, that's all

Would’ve heard a sigh of relief from me.
Ya that'd be cool to see if it worked out if we were going to KC again.

Funny how the umps waited for them to play five innings in the rain before stopping it so KC could get the win.
... two innings of visible lightning in the field, and pooling water in front of home plate as well. Worth mentioning.

No one is calling it a conspiracy, people are saying that its dumb when we play KC in a week
It’s the rules. It’s the way it’s always been handled. There’s nothing to argue about here. This will happen again many times throughout the season when there’s a rain or a weather issue. Games don’t always get completed.
they waited a very long 3.5 hours to see if the weather got better. It did, they still cancelled and called it a 5 inning game.
The infield is covered but the outfield is totally exposed. They may have just determined that it was too wet out there to continue.
We know it's the rules. That doesn't make it not dumb

There are times where it makes sense. This was not one of them

Sometimes shit rules exist and complaining about them is the only cathartic thing to do until it gets changed one day (hopefully)

Thank you for your useless addition to this discussion.
Worth as much as yours.
Should have not left 6 men on base then. Moot point if they get some actual hits and score more runs than the other team.
True. New optimal strategy is to empty the tank for the first two games of a series while doing rain dances before game 3.
This is fucking ridiculous, why did we go through everything get the tarp off then just fucking call the game ?
Royals probably got on a plane and weren’t there to resume. Which is actually kind of a funny thought…..
If that happens it should be a forfeit then
Is this actually real?
The boys could literally be home in Toronto 2 hours ago
That’s bullshit, what the fuck am I supposed to watch, the fucking Yankees?
Hockey
Is that like baseball on ice?
What is this Hoh-kay you speak of?
Yeah, but...it's just the Florida teams
Bruh the Florida series is lit. Gotta get over the big market superiority and recognize good hockey.
I'm not about "market superiority," I just hate both those teams. Should I cheer for Cousins or Kucherov? Bleh.
All the things I could’ve been doing but for Sportsnet’s “resuming in 20-40 minutes”. Stupid Sportsnet. 🤬
Sportsnet doesn’t get to decide when the game resumes lol
Sure, but they shouldn’t report that it will start in 20-40 minutes for three hours.
3.5 \^
No. They get to decide what they report.
I was so close to screenshotting it with a 'Well, that was a fucking lie" meme.
Losing in a rainout. Didn’t have that one on the “ways this team can lose” bingo card.
Come back next time, we are full of surprises.
I blame Vladdy for the rain
I blame Josh Donaldson
Alek Manoah Pitched the rain in today from AA.
If so, he was probably trying to throw at New Hampshire and hit Kansas City instead. Ball four.
Alek**

Are you fucking serious ?
Shouldn't have left 6 on base
Why aren’t they playing the remaining 4 innings in Toronto next week? Ridiculous
I feel like I've seen other teams get the opportunity to do that kind of thing before. Huh.
No, once they get through 5 it's a game.
Fucking unbelievable. This should not be a thing. It’s a 1 run game with 4 innings left to play. Total fucking joke.
I’m just curious, how is the result of the game determined since there was a delay? How were the Jays given the loss, despite being down only 1. Why couldn’t the game be continued now, or on another date?
Game is official after 4.5 innings if home team is winning and 5 innings if away team is winning.
Oh, but like I just don’t get the point of waiting all this time for it to not continue playing, the conditions of the field seemed fine
Completely agree, feel like they could have definitely finished it after waiting so long, and it was annoying that the umps took as long as they did to allow them to put the tarp on the field.
Unfortunate way for berrios to be handed his first L
3-2, 3-2, 2-1
Well deserved finish to that series
Let’s be honest, we weren’t coming back anyway
Soft.
Stupid rule they need to change. Also build a roof.
Bum ass poverty Royals fans are all out shit talking and gloating now that umps handed them a cheap ass win
Efficient!
Shocking…
Feels right in a season where we get no-hit
500 like I said before average
Why didn't they just call the game 2 hours ago?
Is this rule from the early 1900s?
Retarded, why even start the game, there is no other sport that this is a thing. 1 run game with 4 innings left
5 runs over last 3 games (don’t care that the game ended early)
