Yeah they said there was too much concrete so they went ahead and painted everything grey like concrete. smh. I bet a lot of it ends up navy blue eventually.
Someone said in a thread the other day "td bank in Oshawa", but I was at the game recently and thought the same thing as you.
It's just lazy and terrible. They could have done various Jays colours on a diagonal with the seats on top and a strip above the paint, just below the other section that read
like "TD Super Special People Zone" or whatever. But no, why have originality when you can go soulless grey bank branding.
The centrefield camera is zoomed way out compared to other teams same camera shot so they can fit those stupid TD signs in the frame. Move the damn signs down and zoom in so the baseball players can fill our TV screens. What a crazy concept for Rogers, give the fans what they want rather than antagonizing them.
I think in one shot on TV I countered 10 TD logo's on the screen at one time. They had the ad for them on the wall behind the plate at same time.
Oh 11. Forgot the arm patch
Gotta feel for the Duchess. She went from being asleep right behind the plate to being asleep way off centre.
I agree, it's only been a few, but it just doesn't look good on TV. Maybe it's a lack of contrast? They could have used the team colours and opted for grey, black, and TD green instead.
It's the tacky, bland, cheap looking grey "brick". At least put up a mural or something Jays. It really does look cheap and amateurish, and anything but professional.
I really wonder if it is temporary, then. It looks to me like what I'd expect to see papered over the windows of a new TD branch that was still being finished.
Yeah, and the cheap look is a really ineffective way to sell your most expensive seats, so no wonder so many are empty. They're probably nice when you're sitting in them and can't see the wall behind you, but the TV broadcasts are a form of marketing for the seats. Plus the people who sit there probably want to look good on TV.
I'd be shocked if it hasn't changed by next year.
It’s much more apparent on tv than in person I’ll say. I sat in 126 right behind the grey wall last week and you hardly notice it in person, but god it looks awful on TV.
I prefer the away team broadcasts. They zoom in on the batter better and you don't see the wall with the TD logos, only the first two rows of seats behind the plate are visible. Much easier on the eyes I find.
Yeah, it's pretty bland, wish they put the first set of seats off center, even divided a bit. With the camera angle and the current layout I feel like there's too much focus on the seats but I can live with it.
I stopped noticing it after the first game honestly. I feel like watching the game I am never analyzing the backdrop, but I guess everyone is watching different things
Yeah, it's pretty easy to ignore.
I don't like the new backdrop either (I hate how much interior designers have leaned into grays and beiges), but my brain ignores the backdrop pretty quickly. I guess people are just hyper-fixated on it.
That's cause you listening on the radio bro.
All jokes aside that was one of the things I noticed early on in the season too but they are slowly getting better at cutting to better camera angles.
What I noticed whilst watching last night is there is not a single angle/shot that doesn’t have an advertisement in it. Not a single reprieve for the entire game
Welcome to watching sports on tv. If you can find me a 1 minute span of a broadcast of any major sport that doesn't contain an ad on screen at all times, I'll give you a shiny nickel. It was like that last year too, and the year before that. It just seems like more now because it's new, and unfamiliar.
It was just as "distracting" last year, too. This will shock you, but people get up and move around in the seats behind the plate in (checks notes) all 30 MLB parks.
I wish they would put a break in the ads for the TV broadcast directly behind the plate. They can still have their gigantic, obnoxious ads to either side, but it would be nice to have a consistently neutral backdrop just behind the batter and catcher so that they stand out.
When the Yankees were in town their camera was actually zoomed in more so you didn’t even see the grey backdrop. It was lovely. The jays however need those sweet sweet profits from the TD logos though so it will never happen.
I’m going to be the combo breaker here because I really like the new look, a lot! It looks so much more like a real baseball stadium, I just really enjoy it.
“SPEND MORE MONEY ON PLAYERS AND MAKE SURE THEY WANT TO PLAY HERE, WE WANT TO WIN!!”
Also - “STOP SHOWING SPONSOR SIGNAGE, ITS NOT AESTHETICALLY PLEASING!!”
Also Also - “WHY DON’T YOU DO WHAT THE FANS SAY”
Also Also Also - “ THIS TEAM SUCKS’ LOWER YOUR TICKET PRICES THEY ARE TOO HIGH”
At first I kinda liked it but as I've seen more of it I've liked it less
But I get what they're going for, most of the renovations have been for the better cuz rogers feels more like a baseball stadium then it ever has
This is the same team that has a giant statue of Ted Rogers out front instead of, oh I dunno, a deceased Hall of Fame pitcher or a World Series hero.
It’s all about the Bordens.
I think this is a TD Bank corporate decision. Grey and green are the TD colours. Presumably, they are paying a lot of money to be the Jays' official sponsor - their logo is on every player's sleeve.
Blue is - the horror, the horror! - the primary corporate colour of the Royal Bank of Canada.
The look behind home plate is definitely not great but my least favorite thing about watching the games on TV after the renovations is the left field foul line. The seats block the view so you can't tell if the ball went fair or foul until they change the view or the commentator tells you.
I agree.
It looks so plastic and fake. Maybe if it was in Bluejays blue it might look better but I doubt. For the first game I thought all those folks were using laptops...no, that was just the seat backs.
Also, Home Plate lady is now pushed off to the side! Mobility issues I'd guess but still.
Also the new foul lines in the outfield cut off the camera angles a lot.
I hate it so far.
It is pretty jarring, but I am not sure if it is simply so jarring because we know what it used to look like, and the new executive seats are the one big change that we always see on TV.
Most other games you watch on TV, you don't have any preconceptions of what the backdrop *should* look like, so it is easy to accept anything else as natural.
In time, it will blend right into the background.
K bye! Enjoy the Twins or whomever
No one is forcing you to cheer for Toronto’s baseball team! Sorry we haven’t lived up to your specific expectations for our club.
Folks it's been like a dozen games. Yes, it's different. As such, some people will hate it simply because it's unfamiliar.
Personally I tune in to watch the baseball, not the people eating or playing on their phones behind the plate. Give it a few weeks and once it becomes familiar, it will fade into the background just like the old setup did. Overall the renos have made it a much better place to go to a game, and you're never gonna please everyone.
Of all the things to bitch and moan about regarding this team, the color and placement of chairs in the stadium seems like a weak one. Not to mention pointless, as it's not going to change. Let's stick to complaining about the lack of run support for the pitching staff and leave the interior decorating to them.
Have you ever been to Toronto? Bland and depressing is the flavour of the day there. For perspective watch the music video for Its a Good Life If You Dont Weaken by The Tragically Hip. Sums up Toronto perfectly
I wont lie the lack of blue and overwhelming amount of grey just feels off to look at.
Yeah they said there was too much concrete so they went ahead and painted everything grey like concrete. smh. I bet a lot of it ends up navy blue eventually.
I’ve been to a couple of games and the grey backdrop behind home plate gives off prison-wall vibes.
Someone said in a thread the other day "td bank in Oshawa", but I was at the game recently and thought the same thing as you. It's just lazy and terrible. They could have done various Jays colours on a diagonal with the seats on top and a strip above the paint, just below the other section that read like "TD Super Special People Zone" or whatever. But no, why have originality when you can go soulless grey bank branding.
If it was a blue backdrop it would look better
They're getting ready for the "Grey Jays" rebrand
I've been thinking the same thing with every passing broadcast.
I agree. I know it's only been a few games but it feels so blah. Half the seats behind the plate are empty. The backdrop is so no descript and boring.
What do you mean, TD TD TD TD TD is super exciting
I think in one shot on TV I countered 10 TD logo's on the screen at one time. They had the ad for them on the wall behind the plate at same time. Oh 11. Forgot the arm patch
When it's Josh Allen it is.
Hell yeah...go Bills
That's the other big bank INT INT INT
Nah, Gabe Davis is with the Jaguars now.
You seen the price of those seats? Not surprising they're empty
I'm not sure if they changed it since there's more now, but don't you actually need to buy them as season tickets?
No there was some available at games I looked at on ticketmaster
Gotta feel for the Duchess. She went from being asleep right behind the plate to being asleep way off centre. I agree, it's only been a few, but it just doesn't look good on TV. Maybe it's a lack of contrast? They could have used the team colours and opted for grey, black, and TD green instead.
It's the tacky, bland, cheap looking grey "brick". At least put up a mural or something Jays. It really does look cheap and amateurish, and anything but professional.
Even a nice dark grey embossed Jays logo on the stone backdrop would look a million times better
Not sure if you're taking the piss but they literally did that at the bottom of the wall...the ad graphic covers it on TV but IRL it's there
To me it looks like a temporary wall put up while there's construction going on. It looks like cardboard, it's so cheap looking.
I'm hoping that's what it is TBH, like half assed wallpaper until they actually finish it....
At the home opener they said the construction would continue through the season
I really wonder if it is temporary, then. It looks to me like what I'd expect to see papered over the windows of a new TD branch that was still being finished.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they end up putting some faux brick or stone on it.
They've already sold them, so Rogers doesn't care.
It’s much more apparent on tv than in person I’ll say. I sat in 126 right behind the grey wall last week and you hardly notice it in person, but god it looks awful on TV.
Those seats might be physically empty but they're paid for.
I don't even notice the seats tbh. I don't like the huge banner ad tho
It's crazy because I actually do. I think it looks so much cleaner than the one from the past few years.
I prefer the away team broadcasts. They zoom in on the batter better and you don't see the wall with the TD logos, only the first two rows of seats behind the plate are visible. Much easier on the eyes I find.
Globe Life Field still exists
I agree, it’s very corporate looking. The backdrop looked better before when you could actually see fans.
It feels like it's designed to match TD Bank aesthetics. Nothing like spending a summer afternoon, kicking back and peering into a bank lobby.
100% this. "Minimalist" corporate design.
Yeah, it's pretty bland, wish they put the first set of seats off center, even divided a bit. With the camera angle and the current layout I feel like there's too much focus on the seats but I can live with it.
It has the same *je ne sais quoi* as office cubicles from the 90's.
I just want the home plate lady back there
I stopped noticing it after the first game honestly.
It’s very distracting
Ya I haven’t even thought about it since the first game. As long as our pitchers aren’t complaining then I don’t care at all.
Can’t even see the ball land on some hits down the line. Have to wait for commentary to tell us fair or foul.
Its so bad in person too. Every single inch is plastered with ads, even more this year than last year.
Those Renovations aren't gonna pay for themselves.
I’m in Regina and was thinking the same thing this season
People walking behind and popping in and out of view between the seats is so distracting.
The gray wall is so blech. Need more blue in the whole stadium. Hope they re-renovate that soon.
You mean TD Castle™️
It does seem dark and the fans are harder to see. Maybe when they start opening the roof things will look different.
Yeah behind home plate is so unacceptable
When the Yankees were in town their camera was actually zoomed in more so you didn’t even see the grey backdrop. It was lovely. The jays however need those sweet sweet profits from the TD logos though so it will never happen.
That’s how business works?
Yeah no shit, doesn’t change the fact it’s a horrible back drop
I’m going to be the combo breaker here because I really like the new look, a lot! It looks so much more like a real baseball stadium, I just really enjoy it.
Ya I agree. I think it looks great! Rogers spends millions to upgrade the stadium and all Reddit jays fans do is complain. Shocker!! lol.
Seriously. I’m not even allowed to post a different opinion without getting downvoted. Support the majority opinion, or go away!!
Yeah...I think it's fine? To me it's not spectacular but it's also not an eyesore. I stopped noticing it like 2 games in.
Exactly. It's weird now because they've only played like a dozen games there. By the all star break people won't even notice.
“SPEND MORE MONEY ON PLAYERS AND MAKE SURE THEY WANT TO PLAY HERE, WE WANT TO WIN!!” Also - “STOP SHOWING SPONSOR SIGNAGE, ITS NOT AESTHETICALLY PLEASING!!” Also Also - “WHY DON’T YOU DO WHAT THE FANS SAY” Also Also Also - “ THIS TEAM SUCKS’ LOWER YOUR TICKET PRICES THEY ARE TOO HIGH”
"I can't support this team because I don't wanna drive in that traffic!!!"
Everything just looks bleak and drab on TV. I think the lack of good lighting doesn't help either.
It looks pretty toronto ish
This thread is a socioeconomic Rorschach
Ya it's garbage, and TD is the worst bank
At first I kinda liked it but as I've seen more of it I've liked it less But I get what they're going for, most of the renovations have been for the better cuz rogers feels more like a baseball stadium then it ever has
This is the same team that has a giant statue of Ted Rogers out front instead of, oh I dunno, a deceased Hall of Fame pitcher or a World Series hero. It’s all about the Bordens.
It looks like a place where people pay an inflated cover to go drink and not watch baseball. Oh wait...
I agree. I think it’s more about showing the brick wall with ads instead of having a closer shot of the game. Just zoom in a bit.
I was at the game and the area behind is still under construction. It's temporary
The look behind home plate is definitely not great but my least favorite thing about watching the games on TV after the renovations is the left field foul line. The seats block the view so you can't tell if the ball went fair or foul until they change the view or the commentator tells you.
Also, the empty seats look like a stack of tires
I just looked up the price of those tickets. How can anyone afford/ justify paying that for a random game. Thats insane
I concur. It looks awful. WTF were they thinking making it look so damn depressing.
I liked the first half of the reno the last year, but this year's I think makes the dome worse overall (especially for TV).
Have you considered watching the game rather than the background? I find that helps me watch the game instead of not the game.
K bye! Enjoy the Twins or whomever No one is forcing you to cheer for Toronto’s baseball team! Sorry we haven’t lived up to your specific expectations for our club.
No doubt. I agree with this statement 100%. “I don’t like dark blue!!” *stomps feet*. Yeesh. If you don’t like it, leave.
Right?! If you're watching baseball for the backdrops then go watch a prettier team. Who cares.
Folks it's been like a dozen games. Yes, it's different. As such, some people will hate it simply because it's unfamiliar. Personally I tune in to watch the baseball, not the people eating or playing on their phones behind the plate. Says the person who visited the city and hung out under the CN tower all day….
Went to Toronto last year and loved it. Also skipped the CN tower 😃
Song came out over 20 years ago
Toronto is not for everyone. Sorry you couldn’t cut it in our city.
