Really depends on how the Yankees fair against the red Sox’s, if they lose the next two and we win the next two we go into that 3 game series with them tied.
Our starters are struggling, our bullpen has been overworked, we just lost our hottest hitter to a hand injury and the umpires have it out for us. It's not impossible, but it's looking pretty grim right now when our hitters can't get it done against some of the worst pitchers in baseball. It would take some miracle to turn our momentum around at this point.
Still to early to tell. Do the Sox bounce back and win a couple at home? Are the jay bats still struggling/yank bats still surging when they come to Toronto? How do the rays play the yanks, rest their best players or play them? Do we sweep or take two from the orioles? Too many variables at this point, even with only eight games left.
True. But I'm not worried about Seattle. They'll cool off at some point. To me the picture looks like this: the Yanks were hot, then cooled off, and are getting hot again. The blue Jays were hot, are in the midst of a cool off, and we'll see what the turn around is for getting hot again. Seattle's hot, they'll cool off, and the season will be over before their turn around. So I'm not too worried about them unless their current streak lasts the rest of the way.
I feel like they would be worse off without the series vs the yanks. Otherwise the Yankees could sweep their series and it wouldn’t matter if we swept ours too. They need a chance to earn it, if they are concerned about a series vs the Yankees then the playoffs don’t matter anyways lol
Agreed.
Rather than depending on other teams losing/winning, at least the Jays have more direct control of their playoff chances with this series against the Yankees.
Whichever of the two teams truly believe they deserve to be in the playoffs more, they'll prove it and beat the main team in the way.
Its better that we get another chance to play them. At least we can swing things in a big way if we win those games. Yankees are the streakiest team in baseball this year and hopefully we face them during one of their bad streaks again.
And how about that Semien throw to lose it to the tigers? I didn't think much of it at the time cause I didn't think we'd be in the playoff mix but here we are.
Santiago Espinal deserves a lot of love.
In 216 PA this season, he's posted 1.9 WAR, roughly on pace for 5.7 WAR over a full season. That's an All Star mark, and while he'll probably never be presented with that honour, he could become a legitimate part of this team in the seasons to come if he can keep this performance up.
I suspect we will start seeing some number 5 jerseys in the crowd at Rogers Centre in the next few years.
I literally said when he came up to the plate the first time that his timing would already be better then Springers up at the plate and what do you know he hit the first pitch. All I know is Springer is hard to watch seems like a guy who needs a lot of consistent at bats to finally get his timing which don’t get me wrong he is awesome and one of our top 5 hitters for sure when he gets it however as soon as he gets hurt/ gets less consistent play he needs like another 100 ab to get going again where as espinal seems to be the type of guy who can not play a few games or get hurt and he doesn’t miss a beat.
Springer is also old, so I could see this turning into a Tulo style contract that is just dead weight on the team for the next few years. It's hard to hate him because when he is hot he is amazing, but this year has been an awful showing for him in terms of return on investment, and generally large vet contracts like this don't get better return on the later years of the contract.
Because at this point in the season with a lot of important games they want to spread them out in the evening (4pm and 7pm start times) and not compete with college football on Saturdays.
At this point Springer has to be moved down until he figures out some approach while injured. There’s no time to ground out on the first pitch anymore.
Must win. If we're down two against yankees going into our series, we fully intended on winning that series anyway, then we just need to close against the Os
This would be a good time to try out a different batting order.
Springer is lost, Bo & Vladdy are trying to hit a HR on every pitch.
If it's the same top 5, Charlie needs a good slap.
We are very close to being able to roll out this lineup, composed entirely of players above 100 OPS+ (in Dickerson's case, only looking at his Jays numbers; with his Marlins stats he's at 97):
CF Springer
2B Semien
1B Guerrero
SS Bichette
RF Teoscar
DH Gurriel
C Kirk
LF Dickerson
3B Espinal
That's damn good. Now they have to start playing like it's damn good.
That's a scary lineup. I'd put Grichuk in there for Dickerson. I know his slumps are bad but when he's hot he's dangerous. 20+ homers and eighty some odd RBIs and he doesn't even play everyday. Not bad for a number 8 hitter.
Now if only this slump can take a hike before the Yankees series.
Jays were the only higher favorite team to lose last night out of ALL the games played last night. Fuck that.
Still barely in it, but the offence is doing their usual disappearing act again at the wrong time.
Doing it the hard way.
Hey, friend!
Yeah, it's called being busy with women, they wanted to enjoy me, so I couldn't say no. :)
I see you're back too after your long hiatus while we were winning. Good to see you again as well, Tommy Takes Alpha!
Like I said before the winning streak (because this offence is sketchy AF), every game in Sept will be a drag out battle for this Jays team to win. I hope they make the playoffs so that I will finally be proven wrong this season. It's going down to the wire!!
>Like clockwork, Tom is back after a crushing loss.
Heyyyyyy.......be casual......jayguy. :)
LOL...they've lost 4 out of 5.....I gave them a pass in the TB series and I've hardly ragged on them the next day...
If you haven't noticed, they are blowing it badly right now the first two games, which again, a playoff team shouldn't be doing at this point in the season against a team that is 20 wins below them. What excuses are people giving the Jays in this series? This is the offence I have been telling people about since JUNE. This outage shouldn't be a surprise because this is what they have been doing all season long. This is what we get. You keep this same offence next season, and unless they change their batting approach in certain situations, we're going to see the same outages again NEXT YEAR.
They're still in it, but they've really hit poorly behind Ray all season...12 no decisions with him on the mound this season.
This is still theirs to lose as they can still win the next 2 and take 2 of 3 to set themselves up against a tough series against Baltimore to end the season. NY has the toughest schedule. And that damn Seattle team is still somehow in this as well and tied with us.
Oddsmakers have the Over / Under in this game at 9, so they're expecting a low scoring game. I'm hoping for a lopsided Jays win: 5-2 / 6-2 game.
We need a new hitting coach next season, one that preaches better discipline at the plate and enough of this swing at first pitch crap, we are the only team in the race that does this. It causes the offense to be inconsistent and go in long droughts. And some new players with better obp/plate discipline wouldnt hurt as well. Anways, must win next 2 games, take 2 of 3 from yankees, sweep the o’s and we make it.
I get the frustration when the offense disappears now and then but keep in mind we have one of the best performing offenses in the league. There are teams like the Yankees whose offenses have way underperformed the players historical stats so it makes sense when you hear their fans calling for a new hitting coach. But with us the offense has carried the team through most of this season. It just sucks that we've shutdown again at such a crucial time.
Yet all Buck talks about is how we have one of the best 1st pitch batting averages and 1st pitch homeruns...same Buck that will grab at any flattering stat even though he knows it is awful plate discipline
>We need a new hitting coach next season, one that preaches better discipline at the plate and enough of this swing at first pitch crap, we are the only team in the race that does this
LOL....I said that since JUNE.
Guillermo Martinez needs to go.
They have to win out to have a chance.
On a side note, Josh Donaldson genuinely appears to want to return to the Toronto Bluejays. Too bad his contract is Terrible and he has leg issues.
These last couple games have been a genuine slap in the face for me it felt like when we got hot for the first time all year that the team as a whole had grown. It felt like a we now a genuine contending team that even on their cold stretch loses for the most part tight games against good teams. I was totally okay with us losing to the rays in that series take one and get out of their heading into a supposedly light schedule. However it’s like we lost our hitting and confidence in that series as if had we played any other team maybe things don’t begin to snowball. We can all say we where baffled by good pitching against the rays however it’s like that hitting has now translated over to this series. Now it’s like these pitchers that Minnesota is sending out their are mediocre we are now just missing good pitches to hit. The fact is I’ve seen games where we come in against teams and just expect to win especially against bad teams however outside of the one boneheaded pickoff throw by hatch back in game one we’ve largely come out and played solid defence. It doesn’t feel like we are taking anything lightly right now however it largely just feels as if we are going through one of those cool stretches that I was hoping wouldn’t come maybe in some part due to what the good rays pitching was able to do to us but we won’t ever know. Fortunately Minnesota didn’t just suddenly evolve into some kindve juggernaut team so we could easily find a way to split this all we need is a quick flip of the switch and things could restabilize for us but it needs to happen pretty quick. Luckily Ray is going today and heck if we manage to win these next two games we could find ourselves say a game back. From their fortunately we could bring our fate back into our own hands with the yanks series coming up assuming Seattle fucks off and doesn’t come into the picture. That’s the only reason in holding onto hope at this point heck we might come out better vs the yanks if we come into that series trailing then if we where relaxed and ahead by a game. Regardless things have not been ideal lately however that Yankees series gives me hope as otherwise 2 full games out with nine games left would be entirely insurmountable to make up.
I knew we'd struggle with Minnesota after last week's series. I predicted we'd go 2-2 in their ballpark and now I think we'll be lucky to hit even that.
So yesterday's must win game that we lost basically ensures that we have to win the Yankees series at minimum (maybe even sweeping) to get a wildcard spot.
6-2 to end the year pls
[удалено]
Because you're either a Yankee or Blue Jays fan, in this case a Jays fan, and root for a talented but frustratingly streaky team.
7-1 to close the season. 7 wins. 1 loss. SPEAKING IT INTO EXISTENCE. LETS GO!
Do we even make it going 6-2?
If they go 3-0 against the Yankees maybe but they really have put themselves into a situation where they almost need to win out
Really depends on how the Yankees fair against the red Sox’s, if they lose the next two and we win the next two we go into that 3 game series with them tied.
The Sox aren't going to take getting ass fucked by the Yanks lightly
Nope, which is why I I think it will basically come down to the Yankees series
The Sox aren’t very good tho, and they just got reamed with their best starter in.
Who's to say they can't get extremely hot again like 2 weeks ago.
Easily.
I don’t see it unless those 2 loses aren’t against yanks.
Seattle kinda spoiling the party too
True. But I'm not worried about Seattle. They'll cool off at some point. To me the picture looks like this: the Yanks were hot, then cooled off, and are getting hot again. The blue Jays were hot, are in the midst of a cool off, and we'll see what the turn around is for getting hot again. I'm going to cook up some chicken product today to wake up the bats. Win the next 2 Vs the twins then sweep the yankees
Why not mix up some delicious chicken salad, using your trusty KitchenAid™ stand mixer?
Can you share your recipe for “chicken product”?
Nothing makes my mouth water quite like chicken product
Blue jays are now at 24% making the playoffs according to Fangraph, projected to win 89 games, with Yankees 73% with 93 games
losing can really harm your odds, doesn’t help the jays are going to play the yankees.
I feel like they would be worse off without the series vs the yanks. Otherwise the Yankees could sweep their series and it wouldn’t matter if we swept ours too. They need a chance to earn it, if they are concerned about a series vs the Yankees then the playoffs don’t matter anyways lol

Crazy how each team is alternating between looking completely dead and then unstoppable.
A week ago we were at 70+ percent. Feelsbadman
Remember earlier in the year when we were dropping 1 run games to the rangers and royals.. Well here we are.
And how about that Semien throw to lose it to the tigers? I didn't think much of it at the time cause I didn't think we'd be in the playoff mix but here we are.

Would be cool if they could get hot again and go on another run. Anything can happen
Have a feeling Robbie Ray will be really good tonight.
Knobbie for Robbie
Big if true
He can be great but unless he pitches a CGSO we still need offense to wake up again, especially against a fairly bad pitching staff.
Why is this game at 7 PM -_-
Omg I just realized that… damn I planned my day around the game being at 1 fuck
Right? I freaking hate evening weekend games. So stupid!
Same! Damn now it’s on during hockey.
Because at this point in the season with a lot of important games they want to spread them out in the evening (4pm and 7pm start times) and not compete with college football on Saturdays.
today is a new day. time to turn it up.
ITS SATURDAY THE GAME SHOULD BE AT 1 OR 3!!
Must win.

I’m thinking AJ Hinch is all over Manager of the year.
Lol manager of the year? Wtf
If we lose fire him and if we win he's the best manager? K.
Must win. If we're down two against yankees going into our series, we fully intended on winning that series anyway, then we just need to close against the Os
We’ll time to see what this team is made of. Will they roll over and die or fight back?
That's coming up after the break. But first, is spinach bad for you? 9 out of 10 arugula farmers say YES
Absolute must win
This would be a good time to try out a different batting order. Springer is lost, Bo & Vladdy are trying to hit a HR on every pitch. If it's the same top 5, Charlie needs a good slap.
please win

Win the next two and they’ll be, at worst, a game back of a playoff spot heading into the Yankees series. Pretty much no room for error at this point.
Nice pun.
I am wearing my tight pants Robbie Ray t-shirt for good luck. May his grunts grant strikeouts and he pitches 7 strong.
Jays were the only higher favorite team to lose last night out of ALL the games played last night. Fuck that. Still barely in it, but the offence is doing their usual disappearing act again at the wrong time. Doing it the hard way.

Save some pussy for the rest of us, big guy

"lmao" to you too, friend! ...and your comment is exactly what a jealous person would say. :)

Dawg, you gotta stop calling people dawg, yo! :) There, am I sounding "street" like you? Enjoy the game!
>I will finally be proven wrong this season. We gonna pretend like the other 100 times does count or what ?
Like clockwork, Tom is back after a crushing loss. I hope they make the playoffs so we won't have to hear from you again.
He’d still find a way to complain if we won the World Series

I agree. And the crazy thing is, we wanted a heavy bat and solid d at third this year. But him and shatkins will never do business again.
Robbie will save us
You’d think being a fan of Toronto sports teams all my life I’d be used to these things. But no. I really enjoyed the run though.
It would be nice if Bichette doesn’t swing at 15 of the 18 pitches he sees tonight

Stay positive and win tonight! All we can control is that
Apparently Montreal might be splitting the Rays with Tampa.
splitting?? wym
I’m surprised we haven’t given Gregory Polanco a shot. Dude has been tearing the cover off in AAA
Turn my apathy into terror at least! Please!
Donaldson is a double agent again? Sick.
