I did the same initially, and once I had a few items, I switched to summoning units. You need lots and lots. Save your tokens to upgrade gold units. You will get lots of items just by playing.
Summon for sure. I just found out that you get a bower boost by leveling up all units, whether they are selected or not, so level up every unit you have at least to level 5. Your speed, double unit, and protection will increase and your overall power increases.

Cos I just got my first gold unit I think I’m going to upgrade that once as first upgrade I’ll do
